HTC launches One M9+ and One E9+ in India, One M9 won’t be offered

htc one m9+ press shot (4)

HTC announced today its new lineup for the Indian market, including the One M9+ and the One E9+.

The One M9+ was launched last week in China, and while HTC said it wouldn’t be selling the larger M9 version in the West, the device has now made its way to India. The One M9+ will be available from March 3 for Rs. 52,500 (around $840), a notch above the starting price of the M9+’ biggest competitor, the Galaxy S6, which is Rs. 49,900 ($800). It looks like HTC hopes the M9+ will compare favorably with Samsung’s flagship, helped by the slightly larger screen and the presence of a microSD card slot.

The One M9+ is powered by a MediaTek Helio X10 processor (instead of Snapdragon 810, like the M9) and features a 5.2-inch Quad HD display, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (expandable), a 2840 mAh battery, and a 20.7MP camera with depth sensor. Its hero feature however is the swipe-based fingerprint sensor, mounted on the front of the device.

HTC introduced another “Plus” smartphone in the plastic-clad One E9+. Featuring a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, an octa-core MediaTek MT6795M processor, 3GB of RAM (expandable), a 20MP camera, and a 2,800 mAh battery, the One E9+ will debut in India from the second half of May. HTC has not revealed pricing or further availability details for the E9+.

Asked about the 5-inch One M9, the head of HTC South Asia, Faisal Siddiqui, said the device wouldn’t be coming to India. With that said, the M9+ is similar enough to the M9, and in some areas arguably better, to satisfy the demands of Indian HTC fans.

So, if you had Rs. 50,000 to spend, what would it be? One M9+ or Galaxy S6?

Android Authority this week

 Nokia-N1-18

Android fans, this week us brought us the best look yet at the upcoming Xperia Z4; Samsung showed us that its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge can take a beating, and a bending; LG began to unveil to unveil the G4 in slow motion, releasing info on its software and camera; HTC introduced the One M9+ in China, bringing a bigger screen, a different processor, and a fingerprint sensor; Cyanogen revealed the new features coming in CyanogenMod 12; and rumors emerged about Android Wear becoming compatible with iOS.

Inside AA HQ

It was relatively quiet around AA HQ this week, as the Android world is winding down a bit now that the Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 have launched. Speaking of which, these two devices are almost in a class of their own in terms of quality, designs, and features, and we’re really excited to take them for a spin or even buy them as our daily drivers. Some of us are interested in getting the S6, while Joe has already got himself a shiny new One M9. If you’re interested in his impressions after using the M9 for about a week, check out his “review” on Google Plus (spoiler: he loves it).

htc one m9 review aa (10 of 34)

The first batch of reviews for the Apple Watch came out this week, and they were a mixed bag. While the general tone was positive, reviewers pointed out many issues, a sign that not even Apple is sure what to make of the smartwatch concept. That said, Android Wear remains just as inconsistent, even if Google had a head start in bringing its wearable OS to maturity. Read Nirave’s “Top Android Wear alternatives to the Apple Watch” piece for an analysis of the Android Wear landscape right now.

For the second half of April, we look forward to two big announcements: Huawei Ascend P8 on April 15 and the LG G4 on April 28. We’re already set and booked for both events, so expect some prime coverage.

Congratulations to last week’s Galaxy S6 Edge giveaway winner Chen Po Y. (Hong Kong). This week we are giving away a Samsung Galaxy S6!

U.S. Carriers

All four major U.S. carriers now offer the HTC One M9 online and in-store, and we’ll walk you through all of the different pricing structures for each carrier.

AT&T

AT&T logo [aa] (3) Todd Kravos

AT&T customers can grab a One M9 in Gold on Silver or Gunmetal Gray color options. The phone only comes in a 32GB storage option, but luckily there’s a MicroSD card slot present on the device. Like the other four carriers, the price of the One M9 varies considerably whether you’re buying the phone unlocked, on-contract or through AT&T’s Next plan.

To get the phone on a two-year contract, you’ll need to pay $199.99 upfront. If you decide to lease the phone, you’ll owe between $23.64 and $35.45 per month depending on which Next plan you choose. For those who’d like to buy the phone off-contract from AT&T, you’ll owe the carrier $708.99.

For more details on pricing, features, or to buy now, click on the link below:

Verizon

The HTC One M9 on Verizon is being offered in both Gold on Silver and Gunmetal Gray color options. Verizon will sell you the phone with or without a contract, or they’ll let you lease the device.

On a two-year contract, the One M9 will run you $199.99. To buy the phone off-contract through the carrier, you’ll owe $599.99 – considerably less than AT&T’s off-contract price. If you decide to go with a Verizon Edge plan, you’ll owe the carrier $24.99 per month for 24 months.

Sprint

Just like the previous two carriers, the One M9 can be yours through Sprint in Gold on Silver or Gunmetal Gray color options. Multiple buying options are available on Sprint as well, so let’s take a look at the pricing breakdown.

You can buy a Sprint HTC One M9 on a two-year contract for $199.99. You can also lease the device for 12 months and pay $30 per month, or lease it for 24 months and pay $20 per month. If you’re interested in buying it off-contract through the carrier, you’ll need to pay $648.00.

For more details on pricing, features, or to buy now, click on the link below:

T-Mobile

Both color options are available if you’d like to purchase the phone on T-Mobile. This carrier operates a little bit differently from the other three, so let’s take a look at your options.

If you’d like to make monthly payments on your new device, you’ll pay $0 down (assuming your credit is okay), and owe $27.08 per month for 24 months. Buying the phone off-contract will run you $649.92.

Retailers

htc one m9 12

There are a number of retailer partners (online and in-store) where you can pick up the One M9 and sign up for service with your favorite carrier. HTC says that Costco Wholesale will eventually the device, but it’s not live on the retailer’s website quite yet. Here’s a list of some of the best places to begin your search for the HTC One M9:

If you’re not a fan of two-year contracts, HTC also has the One M9 available in both Unlocked and Developer editions. Both versions are available in Gold on Silver and Gunmetal Gray color options and will run you $649. If you’re looking for the Amber Gold variant, you’ll have to spring for the Unlocked device through HTC.com.

HTC Butterfly S now receiving Lollipop update in Taiwan

htc_logo_400

Hot on the heels of the Desire EYE’s upgrade, HTC has just started distributing the long-awaited Android 5.0.2 update for the Butterfly S in Taiwan. In addition to the latest build of Lollipop, the upgrade brings the standard plethora of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations.

Hit the break for the full changelog.

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

In order to install the update, you will have to have 3GB of storage available. If you don’t have enough, we recommend transferring some your files to Google Drive or Dropbox. You’ll also need to be connected to an active Wi-Fi network and have 50% of juice.

If your handset meets all of the above criteria, simply head into Settings, followed by About Device and click Check for Software Update, to download and install the upgrade. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to update.

HTC One M9 goes on sale today: 11 things you should know

htc one m9 review aa (3 of 34)

We’ve already taken a look at what you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S6 now that its big day has arrived, and we’ve even shown you were to pick it up from. Let’s not forget that the HTC One M9 is also hitting retailers in the US (and several other markets) today.

While some of you may have not only pre-ordered the One M9 already, there’s a good chance you received it days ago. For those that aren’t sure if the HTC One M9 is right for them, here’s few important things you might want to know before (and after) buying HTC’s latest.

1. Check out the reviews

If you haven’t already, you’ll want to check out our full review on the HTC One M9 in order to give you a better idea of what to expect.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

brightcove.createExperiences();

2. The competitors

The One M9 is up against some very big competition. While the most obvious competitor is the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, there’s also the LG G Flex 2, the Note 4, and the upcoming LG G4.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge VS LG GFlex 2-13

4. Availability

While we will be bringing you a more detailed look at HTC One availability in the United States a bit later today, the HTC One M9 through most major retailers and all major carriers in the United States. Pricing will vary considerably, depending on if you go with a contract, a payment plan, or buy it outright. For those simply interested in paying full retail price, you’re looking at around $599.99.

5. Colors

The HTC One M9 might not be available in the myriad of colors that you’ll find the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but you do have the choice between gunmetal gray and a silver that has a subtle hint of gold that helps it stand out a bit. Most carriers and retailers are offering both color choices, regardless of what country you are buying the One M9 — though there’s probably some exceptions to that rule.

htc one m9 74

6. Storage

While the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are breaking away from Samsung tradition and ditching microSD, the One M9 still keeps the expandable slot. This could be a big enough advantage to sway some of our readers over the One M9 and away from Samsung, especially if local storage is important to you. That said, unless you live in Taiwan, the only internal storage option you have is 32GB, though you can easily pair it with an 128GB microSD card.

7. Uh-Oh

For US HTC ONe M9 owners, HTC is offering its Uh-Oh program, a major upgrade to its existing Advantage warranty program. Customers who sign up for Uh-Oh will receive a free one-time replacement if their One M9 or One M8 suffers a broken screen or any water damage. The coverage lasts for 12 months from the purchase of a device, and all users are automatically signed up upon purchasing a device.

8. Ultrapixel camera moves to the front

Ultrapixels aren’t gone with the One M9, but they are moved to a new location. The Ultrapixel camera is now on the front, with the rear receiving a new 20.7MP shooter. While this should allow for a better camera experience than found with the M8, many reviews indicate that the One M9 photo-taking experience still is behind the curve due to post-processing and other camera software issues, and not the new sensor itself. For what it is worth, HTC has updated its camera software to help improve this situation, though most reviews say, even after the update, the camera experience could use a bit more fine tuning.

htc one m9 review aa (31 of 34)

9. You won’t burst into flames

The HTC One M9 had some early reports claiming it gets super hot, due to the Snapdragon 810 processor. Since then, it’s been proven that this isn’t necessarily the case. Our own Josh Vergara indicated in his review that the phone gets a bit warm, but he wouldn’t go so far as to call it hot. In other words, if you are on the fence about buying the One M9 due to possibly overheating issues, you have nothing to worry about.

10. A beautiful design gets further refined

The One M9 is very similar in design to the One M8, but not indentical. The handset actually feels more like a merger between the One M7 and One M8, taking both phones best features and adding on a few extra coats of paint. Bottom-line, the One M9 is a beautiful phone, even if it’s design isn’t a massive departure from the One M8 and the M7 before it.

htc one m9 vs htc one m8 3

11. HTC themes make Sense UI more flexible than ever

If you enjoy theming, you’ll be happy to know that the improved Sense 7 software includes a very robust theming engine. The HTC Theme engine lets you quickly change the entire look and feel of your phone, with built-in themes, add-on themes, the ability to snap pic and use the colors for themes, and so much more.

HTC has really done a great job at making its software experience a bit more customizable.

HTC’s Sense 7 to land on HTC One M8 in next update

HTC_One_M8_Back_HTC_Logo_TA_02

Owners of the HTC One M8 have started to receive their Android Lollipop update, but they have noticed that they do not get HTC’s latest interface, Sense 7. That missing piece is surely a disappointment to some, but leaving it out of the current update probably helped get Lollipop onto the One M8 a little bit faster. HTC vice president Mo Versi has now confirmed that the One M8 will get Sense 7, but it will not be until the next major upgrade is released.

Versi has not provided any information regarding a time frame for the next update to be released. His comments came in response to a question about the update rolling out to AT&T devices that started earlier this week. He has also announced that the One M8 GPE has been approved to receive an update to Android 5.1. The current version of Lollipop rolling out to AT&T One M8 devices is 5.0.2, so the next update will probably take those devices up to 5.1 and include Sense 7. Since all the pieces are in place, the process should go fairly quickly – at least as quickly as carrier certifications go.

Sense 7 to hit HTC One M8 in the next software update

LG G3 Vs HTC One M8-17

HTC has been pushing Lollipop to several versions of its One M8, and it looks like the company is now preparing to upgrade the M8 to the latest version of Sense as well.

Answering to a customer inquiry on Twitter, HTC Product Manager for the Americas Mo Versi said M8 users should expect Sense 7 to come with the next software update.

Versi didn’t provide any details on the actual availability of this “next software update,” but our guess is we should see it within a few weeks. Sense 7 delivers relatively few changes in terms of appearance, while new features include a comprehensive Theming app, the Home widget, which groups your most frequently used apps, as well as some personalization features added to HTC’s well-known BlinkFeed. Performance improvements and bug fixes are to be expected.

The One M8 remains a top choice for HTC fans. Available at a smaller price, but quite similar to the M9 in terms of performance and features, the device shines through its design. And, for American customers, HTC is throwing in a very nice perk with the Uh-Oh extended warranty plan, which includes a free replacement in the first year or $100 in credit towards the purchase of a new HTC One phone.

HTC One M9 camera app getting update to match hardware improvements

HTC_One_M9+_PerRight_GunMetalGray

As the HTC One M9 starts to hit consumers’ hands tomorrow, we can expect to see lots of examples of how the camera works. One of the knocks that HTC has been subjected to from reviewers who got early access to the HTC One M9 is that the performance of the camera was underwhelming. This criticism had to sting HTC given the change in hardware from their old 4 MP Ultrapixel configuration to the new 20 MP standard camera. HTC hopes to address that via an update to their camera app that will start rolling out over the next week depending on which carrier is involved.

According to Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC America, the software update will hit anytime between April 10th and April 17th. Reports indicate Verizon units will come with the update preloaded when units are delivered starting tomorrow. Sprint’s HTC Ony M9 units should also receive the update tomorrow, though it may not be preloaded initially. AT&T buyers will have to wait as the update is currently scheduled to start rolling out on April 17th. Meanwhile, although no official date has been mentioned, some T-Mobile users are reporting the update has already started to hit their devices.
