Leak: HTC to release the low-end ‘H7′ tablet in the Q2 2015

htc_logo

We’ve been hearing rumours that HTC is working on its own range of tablets ever since the Taiwanese company was chosen to manufacture the Nexus 9. Thanks to a leak posted on Twitter, we can ascertain that one of the tablets being developed brandishes the ‘H7‘ code-name.

Besides the ‘H7‘ code-name, @upleaks says that the tablet is of the low-end variety and is scheduled for release sometime in the second quarter. Which, seeing as we are already in May, means that the ‘H7‘ should be announced in the next 6 weeks or so. If the leak is 100% correct of course. In the meantime, I’m sure that we’ll be seeing more leaks about the ‘H7′ and any other tablets that HTC are allegedly prepping for release.

Four devices from Sony, LG, HTC, and Apple allegedly heading to Verizon

Moto_X_Back_Verizon_Logo_TA

Four devices, some unannounced at this time, were name-dropped by Evan Blass on Twitter with Verizon being among their destinations. The companies sending their devices to Big Red include Sony, LG, HTC, and Apple.

Blass named the Xperia Z4, G Pad X 8.3, Desire 526, and iPad Mini 4 as the devices on their way to Verizon. Both the Xperia Z4 and Desire 526 are devices that have been made public. The Xperia Z4 was named Sony’s flagship device moving forward with decent specifications and HTC’s Desire 526 currently exists in India as an entry-level option.

The G Pad X 8.3 and iPad Mini 4, though, remain in the dark. The latter two tablets will be replacing the G Pad 8.3 and iPad Mini 3 in Verizon’s tablet lineup.

HTC One M7 GPe finally receives Android 5.1

It has been one month since Android 5.1 appeared for the HTC One M8 GPe and was promised for the One M7 GPe. We are not clear about the cause of the long delay, but the update is finally here for the M7 GPe too.HTC One M7 Android 5.1

Starting today, users can grab the LMY470 update over-the-air. The update weighs in at a substantial 280MB and will update your One M7 GPe handset to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Android 5.1 doesn’t introduce any major new features, but does make adjustments to wireless connection set-ups, system volume controls and notifications, and introduces a small selection of new animations. HD Voice Calling, dual-SIM support and Device Protection have also been thrown in for good measure.

If you have S-OFF setup in your bootloader, you can also grab the update file to flash manually through the stock recovery. Otherwise, hammer away at that “check now” button to see if the update has come through.

Is HTC Going to Monetize BlinkFeed with Sponsored Apps and their Promotions?

Looks like HTC is looking to generate some needed income by monetizing their own social media app, BlinkFeed. Now a lot of you out there that have an HTC device probably don’t utilize BlinkFeed, even though it has improved slightly over the short time it has been in the HTC arsenal. But now HTC wants to use the feed for sponsored apps and promotions according to the screenshot you see above that was posted by @upleaks.

After HTC has updated your BlinkFeed, you will now see at the top where trending news topics would be, sponsored ads for apps or games for you to click on. When there isn’t an ad shown, HTC might use that space to promote their products (phones, Re Camera) which doesn’t seem all that bad given it is their feed. The sponosored ads might annoy some people, but where can you go online these days without an ad reaching out at you to slap you in the face?

This isn’t exactly a bold move for HTC, and we really shouldn’t be shocked by their chose for doing this. If anyone needs more money, it is HTC. Let us know what you think about thise chose to monetize BlinkFeed. It’s not officially confirmed yet, but don’t be surprised if you see an ad at the top in the near future.

Ads may be coming to HTC BlinkFeed

htc one m9 99

HTC recently reported its worst financial results for April since 2009, so it might not be surprising hear that the company is looking for additional ways to monetize its mobile business. According to regular HTC leaker @Upleaks, HTC may be looking to implement advertising directly into its BlinkFeed home screen to help raise additional revenue. See the leaked slide below.

HTC BlinkFeed Ads Monetization Plan

Apparently, the advertisements could range from typical Play Store downloads, to promoting strategic partnerships and offers for other HTC products. Furthermore, @Upleaks suggests that version 7.1 of HTC’s Sense Home, which was released on May 6th, already has the ad framework built in and that it could be switched on as soon as HTC is ready.

Remember, this is still just a rumor for now. Will have no confirmation from HTC on the matter and it’s not entirely clear how the company would go about implementing advertisements, if at all. How regularly advertisements would be displayed, on which devices they would be shown, and whether there’s an opt-in/out or premium option, are all currently unknown.

HTC has already begun rolling out some of its software, such as its Zoe camera app, to non-HTC Android devices and it’s possible that Sense Home could be set to follow suite. Perhaps HTC is planning an ad supported free version of Sense which could be made available to a range of Android handsets. We know that HTC is keen to reach new customers through new hardware and software channels.

While advertising is deemed quite acceptable to subsidise free or low cost services, HTC already charges a premium price for its smartphones, including its new flagship One M9. It doesn’t sound like good business sense to try to milk more money from its limited hardware consumer base and I’d be surprised if HTC was going down this route.

HTC’s long running financial issues are clearly causing trouble for the company, but do you think that BlinkFeed advertising would help?

New leak suggests HTC will monetize BlinkFeed

It’s nothing new that HTC had a disastrous launch of their new device, the One M9, While they had hoped it would increase their sales, they were completely wrong. HTC posted their worst quarterly earnings since 2010, which is a huge blow to the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer. All hope is not lost, as they might employ a new strategy to gain back some profits.

Today, the well-known HTC leaker, @upleaks, posted an interesting leak on his Twitter handle showing a few of HTC’s ‘goals’. The image shows what HTC plans to do in order to put some money back in their shareholders pockets and stop the proverbial bleeding. HTC plans to use their Blinkfeed application to display relevant sponsored applications as well as products, accessories, and services promotions.

HTC monetize Blinkfeed

Essentially, HTC is concocting their own version of Google’s AdSense by using one of their most popular applications. They better be careful, because it will definitely be a double-edged sword. Yes, it might increase their profits, but they have to look at how many consumers will disable or leave HTC for advertising on an in-house application.

So followers of AndroidGuys with HTC devices, if they were to put sponsored ad placement on your BlinkFeed, what would you do? Accept it, disable it, leave HTC? Let us know!

Blind camera shootout – the votes are in…

A few days in Malta a couple of weeks ago for the IFA 2015 GPC presented the opportunity for an impromptu smartphone camera shootout between four heavyweights of the smartphone industry: the Huawei P8, the Honor 6 Plus, the Galaxy S6 Edge and the HTC One M9.

AA camera shootouts:

Unlike past shootouts, we didn’t tell you which handset took each picture and instead, over the past week, thousands of you have cast your vote for which handset you think took the best picture. Now, the results are in but before we reveal the winner, let’s take a closer look at each of the scenes and I’ll let you know which handset I think took the best picture (in my unprofessional opinion).

Scene 1

#gallery-1
margin: auto;

#gallery-1 .gallery-item

width: 50%;

#gallery-1 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-1 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

In the scene capturing the Bank of Valletta building in the capital of Malta, Phone C was most accurate in capturing the scene but Phone B was a little less oversaturated.

Winner: Phone C

Scene 2

#gallery-2
margin: auto;

#gallery-2 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-2 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-2 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Phone D captured the flag with most accuracy but Phone C compensated best for the varying colours of the building.

Winner: Draw (Phone C / Phone D)

Scene 3

#gallery-3
margin: auto;

#gallery-3 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-3 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-3 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The winner here is actually Phone A as it captured enough detail in the sky and compensates for the white balance most accurately. Phone C was a close run second, Phone C did well to capture the building but failed to capture the sky and Phone D was somewhat accurate in portraying the building and sky.

Winner: Phone A

Scene 4

#gallery-4
margin: auto;

#gallery-4 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-4 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-4 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

It’s tough to pick a winner here as none of the images are completely accurate. Phone A doesn’t capture a lot of colours, Phone B has a weird hue, Phone C doesn’t compensate for the light in the scene and Phone D also fails to capture a lot of the colours. Having to pick a winner, I’d say that Phone C comes closest.

Winner: Phone C

Scene 5

#gallery-5
margin: auto;

#gallery-5 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-5 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-5 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

This scene was quite interesting as it was a gift to Queen Elizabeth and Phone B captured the colours most accurately. Phone A is a very close second while Phone D comes third and Phone C rounds off the list.

Winner: Phone B

Scene 6

#gallery-6
margin: auto;

#gallery-6 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-6 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-6 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

This was an interesting test of focusing on a large scene and the results are quite close between Phone B and Phone C. While Phone B is very good, Phone C depicts the sky and handles the changing scene the best and wins this round.

Winner: Phone C

Scene 7

#gallery-7
margin: auto;

#gallery-7 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-7 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-7 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

An interesting test as it was pointing each camera upwards and trying to focus on the chandelier in the iconic Manoel Theatre. Interestingly, Phone B wins this but Phone D is the best at capturing the individual parts of the chandelier and not being affected by the light rays from the chandelier.

Winner: Phone B

Scene 8

#gallery-8
margin: auto;

#gallery-8 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-8 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-8 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

This test actually showed how each phone handled a complex scene with subjects both near and far. Overall Phone B and Phone C are really close but Phone B wins it thanks to a little more detail in the sky.

Winner: Phone B

Scene 9

#gallery-9
margin: auto;

#gallery-9 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-9 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-9 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

A clear winner for me here is Phone B which captures detail in all parts of the image.

Winner: Phone B

Scene 10

#gallery-10
margin: auto;

#gallery-10 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-10 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-10 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Phone C has the least saturation and most life-like colours so it wins this scene. Phone A comes quite close, Phone B captures a lot of detail but oversaturates almost all parts of the image and Phone D comes a distant fourth.

Winner: Phone C

Scene 11

#gallery-11
margin: auto;

#gallery-11 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-11 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-11 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Phone A wins this scene for me as it appears to be the most life-like, while Phone B is slightly oversaturated and Phone C just appears to be a little dull.

Winner: Phone A

Scene 12

#gallery-12
margin: auto;

#gallery-12 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-12 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-12 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

This was an interesting test as there were rays of sunshine from the left and each device had to capture detail in both near and far. The winner for me is Phone B as it was the one which captured both parts of the scene but also depicted individual rays of sunshine.

Winner: Phone B

Scene 13

#gallery-13
margin: auto;

#gallery-13 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-13 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-13 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Nothing quite like an image that might gross you out. It’s difficult to pick a winner for this one as Phone C has the most detail but doesn’t fully compensate for the lack of light while Phone B picks up the light but loses a little detail in the cockroach leg. I’ll probably give this to Phone C with Phone B a very close second.

Winner: Phone C

Scene 14

#gallery-14
margin: auto;

#gallery-14 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-14 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-14 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

This is an interesting test and all four devices do well  but the winner is Phone B as it keeps the colour of the building while also saturating the sky to make an overall nice image. Phone A and C come second as the former captures the building while the latter captures the scene well but is slightly oversaturated. Phone D is the most saturated for both the sky and the building.

Winner: Phone B

Scene 15

#gallery-15
margin: auto;

#gallery-15 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-15 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-15 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Another interesting test of the zoom capabilities of each handset and the winner is Phone C as it picks up the detail of the structure, the dome and the red IFA boxes attached to the dome. Phones B and D come a close second while Phone A finishes the collection.

Winner: Phone C

Scene 16

#gallery-16
margin: auto;

#gallery-16 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-16 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-16 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The second last scene and the first test of the night capabilities. The test proved interesting but the winner is Phone C as it was the only one to capture detail in the brickwork without noise. Phone B comes a close second, Phone D is third and Phone A – which has a fair amount of noise and a lack of detail – comes in fourth.

Winner: Phone C

Scene 17

#gallery-17
margin: auto;

#gallery-17 .gallery-item
float: left;
margin-top: 10px;
text-align: center;
width: 50%;

#gallery-17 img
border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;

#gallery-17 .gallery-caption
margin-left: 0;

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Now to the final scene and one of my favourite as the test is see whether each smartphone can capture the IFA 2015 sign – before it takes centre stage in a fireworks display – just in front of the red steps. It’s almost a dead heat between Phone A and Phone C but the former wins it because Phone C overcompensates the white balance and produces a lighter scene that’s doesn’t accurately capture the colour of the steps.

Winner: Phone A

The winner is…

So according to my results, the overall winner is Phone C, which is closely followed by Phone B. Phone A comes in third and Phone D brings up the rear. That’s my opinion but how did YOU vote?

Over the past week, over 3000 votes have been cast in the shootout and here’s how they stacked up at the time of writing:

smartphone-shootout-results1

So the Galaxy S6 Edge takes it from the Honor 6 Plus, which is closely followed by the Huawei P8 and rounding off the contest in last place is the HTC One M9. The Galaxy S6 Edge winning the contest is no surprise as the camera is very capable but the Honor 6 Plus in second deserves a special mention: at a price of £299 ($450), it’s almost half the price of the other contenders but beats them all to second place.

The Huawei P8 has a fabulous camera and it’s interesting that both of Huawei’s devices have registered almost the same number of votes. For many years, Huawei’s cameras have been progressively getting better and the latest modules are capable of producing fantastic photos that can rival most smartphones.

As for HTC – well it’s a tough one. I’ve been rather critical of the Taiwenese manufacturer but I do think that the new 20MP module in the HTC One M9 was always going to be challenge to optimise properly. Hopefully the woes of the M9 camera – many of which were pointed out in the comments on the original post – can be fixed with software updates but this remains to be seen.

Thanks for voting in the blind comparison and we’ve got another one planned for you! We’ve listened to some of the feedback and our next comparison – which will be up next week – will see the iPhone 6 Plus pitted against the LG G4 and the Galaxy S6 Edge with a DSLR as a control photo. As always, it promises to be epic so stay tuned!

HTC Reports lowest April revenue since 2010

HTC Corporation has released their April revenue numbers Tuesday, and to the surprise of many, they were not what the company had hoped for. The consolidated revenue totaled $440 million, down 39 percent over the same period last year. The biggest issue is that we can now take into account, sales of the HTC One M9 as part of the total number of sales and revenue for the company.

Now, there are many sources that say that HTC has had it’s worst performance in six years. Let’s look at that for a minute. These numbers are in New Taiwan Dollars.

April 2010 NT$18,012 Million

April 2011 NT$38,729 Million

April 2012 NT$31,032 Million

April 2013 NT$19,591 Million

April 2014 NT$22,079 Million

April 2015 NT$13,542 Million

After tracking the April numbers from 2010 to this year, with information straight from the investor section of HTC’s website, this would be the worst April for the smartphone company since 2010. However to call the situation dire would be a dramatic statement. They are still making a profit.

Normally, April is a very good month for HTC as its new flagship smartphone will boost overall sales figures. However, this April’s revenue results can qualify as a potential disaster for HTC. Despite what other outlets may point to as a cause for the drop in figures, we feel that to blame the revenue drop on the HTC One M9 would be entirely speculative at this point. Several models are in circulation around the world at this time, so to lay the cause on just one model of smartphone or strategy would also be getting a little ahead of ourselves.

At the end of April, HTC published their Q1 2015 earnings, posting revenues that were up 25 percent compared to last year. This had suggested that the company’s expanding product portfolio was the catalyst to the success. However, these reported figures do not seem to reflect that the earlier success will continue into the future. According to other reports, BNP Paribas has forecasted that HTC’s total smartphone shipments will reach 18 million units this year, a decline of 13 percent compared with 2014. If this proves to be accurate, it could be another tough year for HTC, but nowhere near it’s worst.

Deal: HTC Evo 4G LTE and one month of unlimited service from FreedomPop for $79.99

Customers shouldn’t have to pay an arm and a leg every month just to use their smartphones. There are a few mobile carriers out there who have been trying to eliminate extra monthly costs for their customers, but few have brought down their prices as much as FreedomPop, the Californian mobile service provider. Normally a 4G LTE-capable smartphone with a data plan can cost upwards of $50 or so, and that’s after purchasing the smartphone separately. However, in a new promotion from FreedomPop, you’ll be able to score yourself a 4G LTE smartphone and one month of unlimited service for just $79.99.

The smartphone being offered by the carrier is a certified pre-owned HTC Evo 4G LTE, and with your order, you’ll get a one-month free trial of the carrier’s Unlimited Everything plan, which includes unlimited calling, texting and data – no strings attached. When your free trial is up, you can either downgrade to the 100% free monthly plan (200 minutes, 500 texts, 500MB of data per month), or take advantage of any of the carrier’s other affordable plans. Other plans include unlimited talk, text and 500MB of data for $10.99 per month, or go with the Unlimited Everything plan for $19.99 per month.

As for the smartphone, the HTC Evo 4G LTE comes with a 4.7-inch 720p display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 32GB and an 8MP rear-facing camera. This certainly isn’t the most powerful smartphone on the market, but this may be a great option for children or older folks who want to try out a smartphone for the first time. It’s also great for use as a secondary line, or for those who are tight on money at the moment.
