Customers prefer the One M9 in “blind tests”, says HTC ad

There’s nothing like a blind trial to remove people’s preconceptions and HTC’s latest video ad campaign suggests that the One M9 is the people’s choice when it comes to selfies, sound and speed, so long as they can’t see the logo.

HTC asked some “strangers” to pick their favourite of two concealed handsets after testing out the front facing camera in low light, listening to music playing through speakers and running through a series of app challenges in the fastest time. Although a rear camera test is sadly absent, perhaps because the handset didn’t fair too well in our own blind camera sample test.

The One M9’s front facing BoomSound speakers performed well in our own review and the larger pixel Ultrapixel front facing camera should certainly outperform some other handsets in low light. It looks like the Snapdragon 810 is performing pretty well in these tests too.

HTC based its speed exercise on another test that pit the HTC One M9 against the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6, but HTC doesn’t actually reveal who it has picked as the competition in its version. Here are the other two videos:

There are also longer versions of each of the tests available to watch on HTC’s Youtube channel, which show much the same thing done over and over again with different passers-by.

While certainly not the most scientific of tests, HTC may have a point about the difference between brand perceptions and reality. Do you think that HTC suffers from a lack of positive brand recognition?

Rumour: HTC’s new flagship will allegedly feature ground-breaking camera technology

HTC_One_M9_Main_TA

HTC’s recent flagship devices have often polarized opinions when it comes to discussing their cameras. While some have criticized the UltraPixel experiments, others have managed to see the positive side of things. Even the return to mainstream technology such as the Toshiba made 20MP sensor as found in the One M9 has drawn negative comments, despite HTC issuing software updates to improve the sensor’s performance. Today, it has been rumored that the Taiwanese company’s upcoming next flagship, the HTC Aero, will feature ground-breaking camera technology.

So, what is this rumored new camera technology that the HTC Aero will apparently feature in its rear sensor? Well, there isn’t much to go on at all, other than a report out of Vietnam saying that the new rear camera technology will allegedly transform HTC’s weakness into a strength, possibly featuring an aperture of f/1.9 with the ability to store images as RAW files. There may also be an improved user-interface. And that’s all we have to go on.

There’s no need to even take a pinch of salt with this rumour because it’s basically just a bag of hot air. The RAW files could be explained away by the HTC Aero simply sporting the latest version of Android. As for the alleged f/1.9 aperture, well that is hardly ground-breaking by itself because the Galaxy S6 rear camera already has a f/1.9 aperture while LG’s G4 boasts a f/1.8 aperture. Until a specific technology is mentioned, this rumour is nothing to get excited about. Oh hum.

With the HTC one M9 struggling for sales, and the Taiwanese company’s stock plummeting, HTC could certainly do with its next flagship recapturing its fan’s imagination. No one wants to see the former King of Android struggling for form, so here’s hoping that HTC can pull the rabbit out of the hat once more, and return to profitable ways. The HTC Aero is rumoured to be announced in October, just a few, short months away.

Deal: AT&T HTC One M9 available for $449.99 on eBay

htc-one-m9-review-aa-2-of-34

Looking for a good deal on a high-end smartphone? We have a pretty sweet one for you. Popular retailer eBay is currently discounting the AT&T HTC One M9 down to a much more comfortable $449.99 price point. It also includes free economy shipping, which makes for an offer you won’t really find elsewhere else so soon after the phone was released.

Is there a catch? Somewhat. The only caveat is this happens to be a refurbished device. The HTC One M9 unit you would get was either returned or defective, but it was fixed and tested it before going back to the store shelves.

HTC's One M9 is powered by the Snapdragon 810

Some of you may be a bit bothered by the idea that someone else had your phone for some time, but it’s really a good way to get devices on a discount. Aside from making sure the device is in good working condition, the seller assures you this product comes with an HTC warranty. It’s also worth noting this is an unlocked device, even if it is optimized for AT&T’s network. It should work pretty well with other carriers.

It’s odd to see such a new device going for a low price like this one. The HTC One M9 was released only some months ago, so this may be testament to how little excitement there is over the HTC One M9. We know the manufacturer could have done much better, and their inability to impress the audience is now resulting in abysmal selling numbers. I mean, this flagship phone’s shipments are 43% lower than they were with its predecessor, the HTC One M8.

htc one m9 review aa (27 of 34)

Their big mistake may have only been that the HTC One M9 is nearly identical to the M8, though. As a phone, the HTC One M9 continues to be a pretty good device, especially if you are a fan of the manufacturer’s superior build quality and design. It’s specs are also up there with the best of the best.

You can go ahead and read our full review of the HTC One M9 to learn all the details. If it convinces you, just head over to eBay’s HTC One M9 page to sign up for this deal. You may want to hurry, as we are not sure how long this deal will last.

California kill switch bill goes into effect today – all phones to come with theft protection

o-IPHONE-THEFT-ACTIVATION-LOCK-facebook-1024x685

RWCW

Smartphone theft is a huge problem – one that costs mobile consumers about $2.5 billion a year. California is one of the first to take action by introducing a law that requests every phone sold in the state to include what has been commonly referred as a “kill switch”.

California bill SB-962 was finalized last August, when we were also informed the new regulation would go into effect starting July 1st 2015. Fast-forward nearly a year later and we are seeing things come to fruition. The day has come and the law goes into effect immediately.

big red button kill switch stop

For those who may be out of the loop, a kill switch is a system (hardware or software) that deems a smartphone unusable if reported stolen. Apple has been implementing its own technology for some time, but they are no longer alone. In fact, a long list of manufacturers, carriers and tech companies are backing this movement, including Google, Microsoft, Samsung and HTC.

Our beloved Google kept its promise to provide an effective kill switch with the introduction of Android Lollipop. It comes in the form of Factory Reset Protection, which allows smartphone owners to set a password the user would need to input before a factory data reset is performed. This, in combination with Android Device Manager (which can lock phones remotely), makes for a full kill switch method without any loopholes.

Android Lollipop Nexus 7 factory reset restoring

How many of us have gotten our smartphones stolen? It has happened to most of us, which means something definitely had to be done. Not everyone was for this kill switch idea. In fact, it was voted down by the senate at first, and those who make a profit out of phone insurances (carriers, insurance companies and the CTIA) were not too happy about the possibility of losing part of its $7.8 billion yearly profits.

The issue here is that this is a proven method and it’s already reducing smartphone theft! Kill switch systems have been put into effect by some companies before the law required phone makers to do so, and it’s doing wonders. Though about 2.1 million Americans had their smartphones stolen in 2014, this is a huge improvement over 2013.

Theft went down by 32%. More specifically, New York saw a 16% drop in handset robberies, and Apple phones had a 25% decrease in losses. Another report published this February also indicates San Francisco’s theft numbers went down by 40% in the last 12 months, while London was the star with a whopping 50% reduction. And it makes total sense! If every phone out there will be unusable when stolen, thieves will have very little incentive to steal them. That is, unless they want an amazing paper weight.

calling-girl

Even with all these advancements, though, 2.1 million thefts in 2014 is a big number. We certainly need to do better than that. For starters, people need to make sure they know how to protect themselves and actually use these kill switches. The implementation of this law keeps you protected only if you know how to operate the tools handed to you. We all still need to educate ourselves; only then can we make kill switches ubiquitous, and hence, effective.

How many of you guys have used these kill switches? Did it ever actually help you recover your device? Do you think kill switches are even the answer? Hit the comments and share your thoughts with all of us.

HTC is giving Verizon customers a $100 Google Play credit with new purchase of HTC M9

htc-one-m9

Earlier today, LG announced a pretty sweet promotion for the LG G4 that makes an already great handset even more compelling. Not wanting to be upstaged, HTC has now announced a new promotion of its own, in partnership with Verizon. The new offer will give you $100 of Google Play credit when you purchase the Verizon version of the HTC One M9.

While LG’s promotion is only good for July, Verizon and HTC want to make sure you have enough time to take advantage of their offer, running it from now until August. The timing of the HTC promotion makes it perfect as a back to school option for those students looking for a new smartphone before school starts.

Android 5.0 Lollipop rolling out to the HTC Desire Eye on AT&T starting today

htc-desire-eye-review-aa-4-of-27

HTC’s Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi took to Twitter last night to announce that Android 5.0 Lollipop would begin rolling out to the HTC Desire Eye on AT&T starting today. For clarification, the update will begin rolling out today, June 30th, which was still “tomorrow” when Versi posted the tweet last night.

In the conversation following the tweet, HTC clarified that this is an update to Android 5.0, not 5.1. That probably won’t be a huge deal to most users with this device, though it would still be nice if the Eye was running the most recent version of Android.

If you need a refresher, HTC’s Desire Eye is actually a pretty nice smartphone. Featuring a 5.2-inch Full HD display, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and a powerful Adreno 330 GPU, the Desire Eye offers users a great overall Android experience without breaking the bank. The device is known for its 13MP rear and front-facing cameras, which actually perform quite well. For a closer look at just what this handset can do, check out the videos below for more information.

HTC Desire EYE should be getting Lollipop OTA today

HTC_Desire_Eye_Main_TA

Everyone wants Android Lollipop on their smartphones, but due to hardware restrictions and red-tape from carriers, it’s difficult to make that a speedy process. However, AT&T and HTC have made headway in getting Android 5.0 on the HTC Desire EYE in the US fairly soon.

Interestingly enough, the update hasn’t gone live just yet. But, it shouldn’t be long before some HTC Desire EYE owners begin seeing the notification to install Android 5.0 Lollipop on their devices, as HTC’s VP of Product Management Mo Versi said it was going out today.

Has anyone gotten the update yet?

Honor 7 & Meizu MX5 vs the competition

Huawei-Honor-7 (1)

Today not one but two Chinese manufacturers have announced new devices and both handsets are feature-rich at affordable price tags. Huawei’s e-commerce brand Honor has announced the Honor 7 while Meizu has announced the MX5, but how do these two handsets compare against each other and to the competition?

Honor 7 vs Meizu MX5

Before comparing these handsets to their rivals, let’s take a look at how they compare to each other. Both handsets adopt all-metal builds and while the Honor 7 has been influenced by the Ascend Mate 7, the MX5 is Meizu’s first switch to an all-metal design.

Last year’s Huawei phablet – the Ascend Mate 7 – certainly had an influence on the Honor 7

Both handsets offer Full HD displays but the 5.5-inch AMOLED screen on the MX5 is slightly larger than the 5.2-inch IPS display on the Honor 7, meaning it has a slightly lower display density of 401 pixels per inch (versus 424 ppi). Both handsets run on Android Lollipop, with Meizu adding Flyme 4.5 on top, while Huawei added its own Emotion UI v3.1 interface.

Switching to the camera, both handsets use Sony modules; the Meizu MX5 comes equipped with an IMX220 module that offers 20.7MP resolution, laser autofocus and 4K Ultra HD video recording while the Honor 7 uses an IMX230 module with 20MP resolution, Phase Detection autofocus, optical image stabilisation and, presumably, 4K Ultra HD video recording as well.

Up front the MX5 has a 5MP front camera with Full HD video while the Honor 7 has an 8MP selfie camera with Huawei’s Beauty Level feature built-in. Beneath the rear camera is where Huawei have added the fingerprint sensor on the Honor 7, which is a feature that’s missing from Meizu’s flagship.

Under the hood, both handsets have octa-core processors with the Meizu MX5 using the MediaTek Helio X10 Turbo CPU clocked at 2.2GHz and the Honor 7 using Huawei’s own Kirin 935 processor, also clocked at 2.2GHz. There’s also 3GB RAM on both handsets and the biggest difference comes in the storage options; the MX5 is available with either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB internal storage while the Honor 7 has either 16GB or 64GB storage.

The price of these handsets is where they may go on to challenge the established manufacturers: the MX5 costs roughly $290 for the 16GB model, while the 32GB costs approximately $322 and the 64GB comes in at $387. In comparison, the Honor 7 is available in three models: the lowest variant comes with 16GB internal storage and single SIM LTE for approx. $322, while the next version up offers the same storage and dual SIM 4G LTE for $354 and the top model offers 64GB storage and dual SIM LTE for $402.

The MX5 replaces Meizu’s previous flagship, the MX4

At these prices, both handsets are significantly cheaper than the competition and while it’s difficult to make in-depth comparisons until these devices arrive for review, let’s take a look at how they compare against the other major flagship handsets on the market.

Honor 7 & Meizu MX5 vs the competition

Like many Chinese companies, both Huawei and Meizu have attempted to challenge established devices by focusing on offering impressive specs with an even more impressive price tag.

they certainly have feature sets that will appeal to almost all users

Along with rival Chinese OEMs Gionee and Xiaomi, these companies have transformed the mid-range market by offering feature-rich smartphones at a price that belies belief. While they won’t have all the bells and whistles found on handsets that retail for almost double the price, they certainly have feature sets that will appeal to almost all users.

Let’s take a look at how the Meizu MX5 and Honor 7 specs compare vs the best from Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC.

There you have it – the specs of the Honor 7 and Meizu MX5 certainly show that it’s possible to make a handset with the latest flagship specs at a price that’s anything but flagship. Of course the specs list only reveals a small part of the overall experience and we can’t comment on how good these handsets are until they arrive for review but the specs comparison certainly gives us food for thought.

What do you think of the specs of the Meizu MX5 and Honor 7 vs the competition? Which handset would you buy (if any)? Let us know your views in the comments below!

The HTC One M9 Plus is now available for pre-order in the United Kingdom through retailer Mobile Fun. The device was originally only available in select Asian markets, along with a handful of options to buy in the US via third-party sellers on Amazon.

The HTC One M9 Plus features a 5.2-inch QHD display, a 2.2GHz Octa-core MediaTekX10 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a fingerprint scanner, a Duo 20.7-megapixel rear camera, and a 4-megapixel Ultrapixel camera on the front. Additionally, you’ll also get the latest flavor of Android with this device, Lollipop.

Mobile Fun is taking pre-orders for the device, starting at £600, which Mobile Fun says is only £21 more than the One M9. As of this writing, there’s no select date when the device will launch, but it shouldn’t be long from now.

Anyone pre-ordering the One M9 Plus? What do you think of it over the One M9? Sound off in the comments!
