HTC acquires stake in Virtual Reality Platform WEVR

josh htc vive

HTC is branching away from just offering smartphones and one of its new branches is in the field of Virtual Reality. Earlier this year, the company announced the HTC Vive VR headset and today, it has announced plans to build its VR ecosystem with the help of virtual reality platform WEVR.

The Taiwanese manufacturer has spent nearly $10 million on a 15 percent stake in WEVR, which is an open VR platform and community based in Los Angeles, USA. With HTC aiming to build the ecosystem and content for its Vive headset, the investment in WEVR is likely to play a crucial part in achieving this.

The Vive – alongside other non-smartphone products like the Re camera and ReGrip– is a departure from HTC’s traditional product portfolio but a necessity given the company’s dwindling financial performance. The company released its flagship HTC One M9 smartphone earlier this year but despite this, its shares hit a ten-year low as the M9 failed in the face of increased competition from Samsung, LG and other OEMs including Huawei, Xiaomi and ZTE.

We went hands on with the HTC Vive at MWC earlier this year and the headset certainly offers a unique experience compared to other VR products. For HTC however, it needs to deliver a wealth of content in order to persuade customers to actually buy the headset, especially given that it may be more expensive than the incumbent, Oculus Rift.

Nextbit gears up to launch its own Android phone

Nextbit

Nextbit, the startup that brought a host of continuity features to Android, is now gearing up to launch its own smartphone. While the San Francisco-based company has not revealed much about its debut in the hardware business, it has announced that its Android device will be quite unique.

“We want to set this off as something different,” Croyle said. “We don’t have to be for everybody,” Scott Croyle, Nextbit’s Chief Product Officer, was quoted as saying.

In fact, we expect nothing less than a revolutionary design from Nextbit as Croyle happens to be former HTC design chief. Speaking of formers, Nextbit’s co-founders Tom Moss and Mike Chan used to work for Google.

The phone that Nextbit is planning to sell in the coming weeks will make a good use of its cloud-based continuity app known as Baton. The service lets you pass the application data from one Android device to another without any hassle. For instance, if you are playing a game on a phone whose battery is about to die, you can pick up the game from the same level on your other Android device, provided both of them have Baton and the game installed.

There is only one glitch- Baton cannot be downloaded from the Play Store; it must come preloaded with the device. Perhaps that’s the reason why the company is launching its own phone.

“We’re really shifting the focus to a controlled experience,” CEO Tom Moss said. “We don’t want to do piecemeal services anymore.”

The 20-employee company has raised $18 million from Accel Partners and Google Ventures, but it won’t be a cakewalk to survive in an overly-saturated market that sees rise and fall of mobile brands on a daily basis.

Android 5.1 Lollipop now rolling out to the T-Mobile HTC One M9

htc-one-m9-92

If you’ve been waiting for the update to Android 5.1 Lollipop to make its way to your HTC One M9 on T-Mobile, your wait is almost up. Starting today, T-Mobile is rolling out Android 5.1 to One M9 handsets on its network, bringing the software version number up to 2.7.531.6.

The update brings some notable battery improvements to the device, and will also make Google Wallet a pre-installed application from here on out. The One M9 is also receiving a new “Anti-theft” feature, according to the carrier, which Google refers to as factory reset protection in its Android 5.1 changelog. The T-Mobile One M9 already received the big camera-improving update that began rolling out a few months ago, so there likely won’t be many big improvements on this front with the new update.

T-Mobile sends Android 5.1 and battery improvements to the HTC One M9

HTC_One_M9_Back_TA

Right now, T-Mobile is pushing a software update to the HTC One M9 on its network. The carrier updated the device’s support page this morning with a listing for new features and improvements.

t-mobile_htc_one_m9_software_update

The software update contains Android 5.1, Google Wallet, anti-theft protection, and battery improvements. All of those items except the new anti-theft protection sound familiar. The One M9 will now prevent unauthorized factory resetting from going through. Users need to have a screen lock and Google account on the device for it to be activated automatically.

T-Mobile’s build number for this software update is 2.7.531.6.

HTC ‘Hima Aero’ allegedly heading to AT&T

htc-one-m8-multitasking-ta

Things are not going too well over at HTC. The Taiwanese company is shipping fewer devices, delaying new hardware, and losing money at a rapid pace. Chairwoman Cher Wang has had to apologize to shareholders for its slumping performance. As Wang hinted, HTC will seemingly have a flagship coming this fall to try and prevent any further damage.

On Twitter, Evan Blass noted that a device known as ‘Hima Aero’ is on its way to AT&T. This is likely going to be the flagship that comes in to potentially give HTC the holiday season it so desperately needs. A Quad HD (2560×1440) display and ground-breaking camera technology are among the specifications for this phone.

HTC hopes to make connection with new ad

HTC_One_M9_Back_Slanted_Camera_Lens_TA

HTC has released a new video for the HTC One M9 that tries to play on emotion in a big way. Using the hashtag RallyAroundMichelle, the spot portrays a young woman who is having a difficult day. After posting a social media message “I am nobody” the responses start to pour in reminding Michelle how many people do care about her. Of course, all of this is accessed via her HTC One M9 as her day is slowly brightened by the messages.

You can check out the one minute long “full” video after the break.
