HTC One A9 update adds extra AMOLED display color profiles

htc one a9 review aa (1 of 29)

AMOLED color reproduction is a somewhat controversial subject. Fans of the organic display applaud it’s vivid colors and inky blacks, while detractors claim unrealistic over-saturation. The panels, which have seen a major boost in the past year, often ship on devices that add color profiles to let the user manage this very issue, be it a Samsung Galaxy or even the new Huawei Nexus 6P. The HTC One A9 is another such device with an AMOLED display, and thanks to a new update, it’s more user friendly than ever.

Pushed out last week, the Build 1.27.709.5 has taken the original two Color profile settings (“AMOLED” and “sRGB”) and added two new ones: “Colder color” and “Warmer color”. While our phone received the update days ago, it was only just hours ago that we noticed the new additions upon randomly checking the Display settings.

Please note that the device we are using for this post is a Taiwanese variant with 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, Model A9u. As each region receives its own software updates, there is no guarantee this particular feature will be available on your specific model now or in the future. For reference, the original Display profile settings menu looked like this:

HTC launches Desire 828 with 13MP OIS camera, 4G LTE and dual SIM at $300 in India

HTC has finally revealed the price of its latest mid-ranger beast, the Desire 828, which will be available for sale via Indian online retailer Flipkart for Rs. 19,990 (roughly USD 299). The 4G LTE-capable handset comes preloaded with Sense 7 UI based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The Taiwanese company had recently announced the One A9 in India, which will be available exclusively on Snapdeal for Rs. 29,990 (an equivalent of USD 434).

HTC_Desire_828

Going on sale from December 14, the latest Desire device features a 5.5-inch IPS display with 1080p resolution and a respectable pixel density of 401 ppi. It is powered by an 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor and 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB internal memory.

The USP of the device, however, could be its 13-megapixel rear-facing snapper that comes with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), BSI sensor, autofocus and LED flash. It even has a 4-UltraPixel front facing camera to take those high-quality selfies and video calls. The HTC Desire 828 has two 4G LTE-compatible SIM card slots. It houses a 2,800 mAh battery and is available in Dark Grey and Pearl White colors.

HTC Vive pre-orders to kick off in February, launch by April

HTC Vive hands on

The virtual reality industry hasn’t really even kicked off yet, but consumer excitement for first generation products is already high. HTC has just announced that consumers will be able to pre-order its Vive headset in February 2016, with a release date scheduled for April.

While some consumers had been hoping to get their hands on the final product a little earlier, HTC states that it had decided to shift availability back a little to ensure the best possible end product. The company also wants to make sure that there’s immersive content and a leading distribution platform in place by the time the Vive lands in consumer hands.

HTC is already looking beyond the VR gaming market that is expected to drive early consumer adoption too. The company recently co-hosted a symposium with Professor Neil Martin, Chair of the Neurosurgery Department at UCLA, and is investigating the uses of virtual reality to help train medical students and to reduce dependency on and costs of using cadavers for dissection.

While we are edging closer to an exciting consumer level launch, HTC is also gearing up to unveil a next generation developer version of its VR headset. 7,000 additional developer kits will be distributed in early 2016 and the company will be showing off the new kit at its ‘Vive Unbound’ event in Beijing and at CES 2016 in Las Vegas.

10 Android phones you should consider for T-Mobile (December 2015)

Are you in the market for a new smartphone? Is Sprint the service provider you’re considering? You’re in luck!  We’re here to help you pick out that next handset. If you’re an existing smartphone owner, picking out an upgrade won’t be too much of a challenge. But, for others, particularly first-time buyers, the idea of buying an Android might make them nervous.

Which is the newest phone? What is the best phone? Which is the one that’s going to give me exactly what I need? We’re here to help you dig mine through the muck and pull out a few gems.

We’ve put together a list of the top 10 Android smartphones you should consider for Sprint this December. Here, in no particular order, are ten Android handsets that you should consider for Sprint if you’re currently contemplating a new device.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Galaxy-Note5_front-with-spen_White-PearlThe fifth generation of Samsung’s plus-sized smartphone experience boasts a gorgeous metal and glass design. The S Pen digital stylus is smarter than ever and works without even powering on the display. Up from previous models, storage options are now 32GB and 64GB. The battery, which comes in at a commendable 3000mAh capacity, allows for fast charging, wireless charging, and even fast wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

An almost identical sibling to the aforementioned Galaxy Note 5, this one trades out the stylus for the dual curved display. If you don’t need to jot down notes or mark up documents, consider grabbing the more sexy counterpart.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ at T-Mobile

Samsung Galaxy S6

Announced in the spring, it’s hard to beat the annual Samsung flagship smartphone. The 5.1-inch Quad HD screen is a stunner and feels oh-so-right in our hands and the premium design includes glass and metal. It’s the first Galaxy S model we’ve wanted to coddle and protect in a long time. It doesn’t hurt that it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop (with an expected 6.0 update), comes with at least 32GB storage, and has 3GB RAM to boost performance.

LG G4

LG continues to impress with a steady stream of flagship models that demand attention. We long ago fell in love with the rear button layout and this year’s version has one of the best camera experiences we’ve ever seen on a smartphone. The specs are top-notch and the screen is a real looker.

LG V10

LG-V10-Black-01

The newest phone of the bunch, this LG features two displays. Indeed, there is the 5.7-inch quad HD screen which looks gorgeous on its own. However, up at the top you will find a small secondary display which offers quick access to favorite contacts, apps, media player buttons , or an at-a-glance view of your schedule.

But, as if that were not enough, you will also find 64 gigabytes of internal storage with a microSD card that allows for another 200GB of space. The removable 3,000mAh battery is more than enough to get you a day or two of life. The rear offers up a 16-megapixel camera while the front houses a pair of 5-megapixel shooters. One works for close-ups while the other has a wide angle lens for group shots.

HTC One M9

carousel-htc-one-m9-gunmetal-380x380-1The lone HTC model here is also one of the oldest flagship models to make this list. Don’t let that concern you, though, it’s still a kick-ass phone with a great build.  The 5-inch screen looks great and fits well in the hand while the 20-megapixel camera snaps excellent photos. The microSD card keeps media lovers content with room for up to 200GB of external storage. And, perhaps the best part, the included Uh Oh Protection will replace your water damaged or cracked screen for free inside of 12 months.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime

Somewhat of a trimmed-down take of the Galaxy S line, this one gives new smartphone users more than enough to learn the ropes. What’s more, it comes at a fraction of the cost of the flagship brand. Specs include a 5-inch HD display, 8-megapixel rear camera, and a front-facing 5-megapixel camera. Powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop, you also get to enjoy expandable memory via microSD slot.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime at T-Mobile

ZTE Obsidian

Priced to move, you’ll have a hard time beating the value in the ZTE Obsidian. Those looking to get into the smartphone game should find the 4.5-inch phone meets their needs. The Android 5.1 Lollipop provides the Material Design aesthetic that’s become all the rage; the 8GB storage with microSD expansion (up to 32GB) ought to be enough to store your music, pictures, and other media.

Kyocera Hydro Wave

carousel-kyocera-hydro-wave-all-380x380-1Does your lifestyle find you spending time around water? Plumbers, lifeguards, and parents of toddlers will enjoy the waterproof Kyocera handset. Not only that, but the Military Standard 810G rating ensures this one can take a beating. Go ahead, drop it, if you can. The non-slip finish won’t make it easy on you.

Kyocera Hydro Wave at T-Mobile

Samsung Galaxy Core Prime

When all you need is the essentials, consider picking up the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime.  It’s a pocketable 4.5-inch experience with a 5-megapixel rear camera and front-facing 2-megapixel shooter. The quad-core processor and 1GB RAM won’t set any benchmark records, but what do you expect for about one hundred dollars? Give this one to the kids for their first taste of Android.

HTC sending out 7,000 more Vive virtual reality developer units soon, new launch target is April 2016

htc_vive_developer_edition

HTC yesterday released a status update for how far along the HTC Vive is. There’s been some misinformation circulating, according to HTC, and they want to resolve that with a quick update. That said, the Taiwanese-based company is still hard at work on the virtual reality headset and plans on starting out the new year by offering an additional 7,000 developer units to, well, developers.

HTC in its blog post said that an official launch isn’t that far off either. While some speculation indicated that the Vive would launch much earlier, HTC is now saying that consumers can expect to purchase the Vive after its official launch in April 2016.

The company introduced the Vive earlier this year at MWC 2015, saying that the virtual reality headset would be available to consumers by the end of the year. That’s obviously no longer the case, and despite the disappointment, it’ll ultimately be a good thing for the product.

There are many high expectations for some of the bigger and upcoming virtual reality headsets, meaning that companies like HTC and Oculus need to make it perfect before offering the device to consumers. Not only that, but virtual reality to this extent is a fairly new technology, and as a result, just takes more time to develop and perfect.

When HTC and Oculus are ready to officially release their virtual reality headsets, consumers will ultimately be very happy to see a refined and polished product, even when all of the delays are a pain.

Anyone looking forward to the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift?

[Rumour] HTC’s next flagship is codenamed ‘Perfume’, will launch with Android 6.1 and Sense 8 in tow

htc_logo_fall_2015

Back in August, there was a rumour that HTC’s next flagship handset ran under the codename ‘O2’ and featured a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 6-inch display. In theory, it was a monster of a handset, with a fan’s wish list of high-end specifications, which means it shouldn’t be a surprise to learn that the ‘O2’ is dead in the water. Instead, HTC’s next flagship is running under the codename ‘Perfume’.

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

This is according to @LlabTooFeR, a serial leaker with a good track record when it comes to HTC. This new ‘Perfume’ flagship will apparently launch with Android 6.1 Marshmallow with Sense 8 in tow. Before you begin worrying about the ‘Perfume’ moniker, it should be stressed that it is a codename only. You can imagine the headlines if it launched as the HTC Perfume and it didn’t meet expectations.

Hopefully, the HTC ‘Perfume’ can continue to pull the struggling Taiwanese company out of its financial problems, much like the One A9 (reviewed here) that has helped HTC post a 6-month high in revenue.

It’s going to be at least March before HTC announce the ‘Perfume’, what specifications would you like it to feature? And do you want it to carry on with the One A9’s design language?

Rumor: HTC Perfume to be 2016 flagship with Android 6.1 and Sense 8.0

HTC made some major news yesterday when it announced that monthly revenue hit a six-month high last month. What initiated such success? Only the new HTC One A9 smartphone, which features a brand new design language and cleaner, leaner Sense build. Given the misgivings fans and critics had about this year’s flagship-proper, the One M9, all eyes are now on the prospects of 2016 and what may come forth. Today we have a slightly better clue thanks to leaker LlabTooFeR:

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Provided this information is accurate, the new flagship is now called the HTC Perfume. It is currently unknown as to if this is implied to be the final name of the device, or simply the company’s internal reference. The latter is more likely given the (1) reference to an “HTC O2” int he previous line and (2) the misconceptions that might arise from a device being named “Perfume”.

The O2, for reference, was rumored to include a 6-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 820 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of on-board storage, and a 3,500mAh battery.

Google and Sense

Perhaps the bigger nugget to glean from this Tweet is Android 6.1, especially as Google has only just released 6.0.1. Will this new decimal increase bring with it a major update to the OS? Will it also be called Marshmallow? Will HTC be the first non-Nexus device to include it, a la its A9? We can only imagine the answers.

htc one a9 review aa (25 of 29)

The last pertinent point is Sense 8.0_GP. Those who have been following the A9 may be aware that the device uses a more streamlined, “pure-esque” version of Sense that looks and functions more like AOSP Marshmallow than not. The US variant of the phone has also been promised to receive updates within 15 days of every Nexus firmware release. This corresponds to Sense 7.0_g and thus we begin to wonder if he same may hold true of the new version mentioned here.

While purely conjecture at this stage, it is also possible that GP may refer to “Google Play” and thus the idea that the Perfume might be running what looks like pure stock Android save for BlinkFeed or perhaps the Themes store. Even the 7.0_g build on the A9 has visual overtones and elements that still separate it from AOSP; could HTC actually be making a non-Nexus Nexus?

Suffice to say that 2016 may bring some big news for HTC fans. The company has stated the A9 represents a new design language, and thus we eagerly await the future of the company some have referred to as “the Treasure of Taiwan.”

HTC will launch its Vive VR headsets in April 2016

It doesn’t sound like HTC will be able to make a limited number of Vive VR headsets available for purchase by the end of 2015, as it once told Engadget. But at least it now has a set date for the device’s commercial release: April 2016. In a blog/social media post detailing the device’s timeline, HTC said that it’s hosting a developer conference in Beijing on December 18th and launching a second-gen dev kit before the masses can start buying the headset. It also plans to distribute 7,000 units to developers in early 2016 and taking the product of its partnership with Valve on a demo tour at a number of key events, such as The Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, GDC and MWC. Bottom line is that the headset will finally come out next year, likely a bit after the consumer version of Oculus Rift becomes available — good luck to your poor, poor wallets.
