Verizon Buyer’s Guide for Android (November 2014)
In the hunt for a new smartphone from Verizon? Regardless of whether you’re buying your first Android or upgrading for the fourth time there’s something for everyone. And, as you might suspect, Big Red has plenty to choose from. In fact, counting variations, there are roughly two dozen models to choose from today.
As the lone carrier to offer the Droid series, Verizon transitioned the family away from other hardware makers into an exclusive relationship with Motorola. Beyond that, you’ll also find some devices that are exclusive to the nation’s largest wireless provider.
Defining high-end
Today’s top Androids feature big, gorgeous displays, fantastic high-resolution cameras, and lots of memory. Toss in some quad-core and octa-core processors and some killer high capacity batteries and you’ve got mobile devices that would rival your computer from just a few years back.
As 2014 draws to a close and we look at the hardware from late model Androids it’s not uncommon to find screens hovering at 5-inches or larger. Thanks to ever-shrinking bezels we have phones with massive displays that also happen to fit comfortably in our hand. And, they’re not only big, but they’re sharp, too. Resolutions across the the top models are 1080p and higher. For what it’s worth, we’re starting to get our first glimpses of 2K and Ultra HD screens. It can be argued that average users cannot discern much beyond 720p/1080p on such a small device.
If you’re not coming to the table with at least a quad-core processor and 2GB RAM then you’re not going to sit at the big boy’s table. Most of the bleeding edge stuff you’ll find today comes with 3GB memory and chipsets of around 2.3GHz – 2.7GHz.
Storage capacities, for the most part, haven’t moved forward quite as quickly as other areas. You’ll still routinely find 16GB and 32GB models in most models though some are creeping into the 64GB space. Given that many handsets offer external storage via microSD cards it should matter little where you start out – especially if cost is a factor.
Another important factor in determining a smartphone purchase is the version of Android. Typically, it’s a simple case of “the newer the phone, the newer the operating system”. Today’s most recent phones are powered by Android 4.4.4 KitKat but anything running at least 4.4 should suffice for the average person. You will still find an occasional straggler, though, running something older.

Mid-range
While not always the case, the mid-range Android is typically made up of last year’s top models. This is not to suggest, however, that there’s not a one-off model or variation that sneaks in every once in a while. Specs, as you can imagine, are often a step below. Processors, cameras, and batteries are sometimes the key difference though many of them also feature a screen resolution of 720p or 1080p. What follows what could be considered some of Verizon’s middle-of-the-pack handsets.

Sprint expands its super-fast network to 17 new locations
Sprint has today expanded its Spark LTE service to include 17 new locations, which now makes a total of 46 markets across the US where the enhanced coverage is currently available. Spark is an optimized version of the operator’s LTE network, which is designed to deliver peak wireless speeds of between 50-60 Mbps on a number of capable device, including the HTC One (M8), Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z3, and many more.
“With its unique combination of network technologies, spectrum capacity and tri-band devices, Sprint Spark is designed to greatly improve the performance of video and other bandwidth-intensive applications,’ says Sprint.

Sprint-branded HTC One now receiving Eye Experience update
In addition to expanding its enhanced 4G LTE service today, Sprint has also started rolling out a rather hefty over-the-air update to all its carrier-branded variants of HTC’s flagship smartphone, the One (M8), currently located in the United States.
Weighing in at 250MB, the upgrade transports the Taiwanese company’s recently-announced Eye Experience camera software, together with a bunch of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations.

HTC Sense 7 with Material Design on Android 5.0 Lollipop screenshots leaked
Recently, Google made the announcement of Android 5.0, the latest and the most advanced version of Android so far. The new update is expected to hit almost all the flagship devices of different OEMs like HTC, LG, and Samsung etc. Talking about HTC, the M7 and M8 will be the first one to receive this update, and according to a leaked screenshot by YouMobile, we might have an idea about what HTC is working on.
It can be seen in the picture above that HTC is planning to release a new version of HTC Sense, known as Sense UI 7; it will come with Material Design and obviously Android 5.0. However, the source further mentions that these leaked shots might be the early build of Sense UI, so nothing is set on stone. But at least, it still gives us on idea on what we can expect from HTC later this year.

HTC’s Android 5.0 update roadmap leaks
HTC has already confirmed that they’re planning on getting the Android 5.0 update out to the HTC One M7 and M8 within 90 days of receiving the code from Google. However, they haven’t clarified anything about other devices, but fortunately a leaked roadmap has shed some light on what devices will receive the update, and when that will happen.
The M7 and M8 are still slated for what will probably be a January/February release. The Google Play Editions of those devices are probably going to see an update much earlier, though, with a release date pegged for late November or early December.
Other devices, including the dual-SIM versions of the M7 and M8, plus the Desire Eye, Butterfly 2, and the HTC One E8 are all looking at launch windows of January to March. The HTC One Mini 2 and Desire 816 are slated for a March/April update, and the One Max, original One Mini, and the Butterfly S are all looking at a March to May timeframe.
HTC is pretty committed to getting their devices updated, but there are tons of variables that go into these updates, so there’s no 100% guarantee that any of these devices will actually get the update. Still, HTC has done a much better job than most OEMs, so keep an ear out for any more details as we get closer to next year.

India gets the HTC One (M8 Eye), Desire Eye, RE Camera, and a few more devices
The latest round of devices from HTC have all made their way to a new region. The One (M8) Eye, Desire Eye, and RE Camera are all available in India. The price for the One (M8) Eye and RE Camera converts to about $634 and $162, respectively. Pricing for the Desire Eye has yet to be announced.

In addition the the Eye devices, India is getting more handsets that belong to the Desire line. The Desire 820, 820q, and Desire 516C are all heading to India as well.
The Desire 820 and Desire 820q are pretty much the same device except for the processors used. Both have 5.5-inch displays with 720p resolution, 13/8MP cameras, and 2600mAh batteries. The Desire 820 has a Snapdragon 615 proccessor with 2GB of RAM. The Desire 820q, though, has the Snapdragon 410 with 1GB of RAM based on 64-bit architecture.
Finally, the Desire 516C is a low-end device with a 5-inch display with qHD resolution. Inside is a Snapdragon 200 paired with 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is 4GB with a microSD card slot. The front camera is VGA and the back is 5MP. The battery is 1950mAh and the handset has dual-SIM support.

Sprint’s HTC One (M7) update fixes Miracast
Sprint is busy pushing out a relatively minor over-the-air stability update to all its carrier-branded variants of HTC’s former flagship smartphone, the One (M7). Sadly, this upgrade doesn’t bring any major software modifications, such as Android 4.4.4, but it does transport a fix for a rather annoying problem that many users have been complaining about for a while now.
After update software version 5.05.651.2 has been installed, users will notice that they once again have the ability to mirror both local content and cloud-stored media to a Sony Bravia Smart TV via Miracast – a feature they’d lost due to a flaw in Sprint’s version of the KitKat operating system for its variant of the One (M7).
To initiate the upgrade manually, make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network. Then, from the home screen, press the Menu key, followed by Settings. Scroll to the bottom and tap ‘About Device’, then ‘Software Update’ and ‘Update Now’. Follow the prompts on the display of your device and your phone will start to download and install this 15.4 MB stability update.

HTC reaffirms promise of Lollipop to the M7 and M8 in 90 days
In June, HTC promised that once they had access to the, then, Android L code, the HTC One M8 will see the sweet taste of Android 5.0 within 90 days. Well… the Taiwanese company reaffirmed that today in a tweet but also confirmed something else.
That’s right folks. The original HTC One will also be receiving similar treatment in a similar time frame. Of course it should be known that this is HTC stating that it will get the update out, what carriers do from there is anyone’s guess.
That being said, it looks like Google is leaning toward Nov. 3, as being the day we see the code released, so we’re looking at February (maybe with the release of the M9) at the earliest. Happy waiting.
