What we expect: HTC ‘M8′ One+

As one of the most rumored and anticipated devices of the year, the successor to the HTC One is expected to show up at some time in the next few months.  That is, an announcement is at least rumored for late February or March.

HTC, for its part, has done a decent job of keeping things under wraps for the so-called “HTC One 2″ but flagship models often feature their share of leaks. Rumors have been circulating for more than a few months as to what we might expect for the company’s 2014 premier model and are likely to continue up to the very moment of announcement.

We’ve taken this opportunity to gather up some of the juiciest and most likely rumors and put them in one place.  What you’ll find below is a growing list of things we expect or feel strongly about as it pertains to the HTC One 2.

If you see something that doesn’t look right or something we may have missed, let us know! We will update this post as we learn more about the HTC smartphone.

The Name

As to be expected when you deal with a smartphone called the “HTC One” thus far it’s been quite difficult to pin down the successor’s name. With that said, some that have been tossed about the rumor mill include HTC One 2, HTC One+, and HTC One (2014 Edition).

Specifications

Chatter suggests that the smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and feature 2GB RAM, an dual-sensor UltraPixel camera, and 2,900mAh battery. Like the HTC One Max, this one has been leaked as having a fingerprint scanner.

In terms of the display, we’ve been hearing something in the ballpark of 5-inches to 5.2-inches. While some companies are pushing into the 2K (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution, this one will likely have the more popular 1920 x 1080 pixel display. Reports indicate that HTC has been able to slim the bezel down and increase the screen size without making for a larger overall form factor.

Android and UI

We should expect Android 4.4 KitKat at the minimum, perhaps something as new as the 4.4.2 version. In terms of HTC’s custom Sense UI, we are told to look for a 6.0 release for the handset.

Launch

Different launch dates have been tossed around with most centering around Mobile World Congress. Most recently, however, details surfaced which suggest the HTC flagship could debut at a standalone event in late March. If correct, we could see the device unveiled at New York press conference. The predecessor was introduced at a February event which took place in New York and London; retail arrival, however, was another month away.

Carrier support

We fully expect to see HTC release the smartphone across all major carriers around the world. As for the United States, we anticipate the big providers getting their respective models at or around the same time.

Anything else?

The HTC handset may debut with up to four color options however some may be carrier or regional exclusives. What’s more, we could ultimately see some new colors rolled out over time, perhaps with retailers like Best Buy.

Differing from HTC devices of the past, navigation will likely come in the form of on-screen buttons.

HTC M8 Looking to Launch Late March and will Look Very Similar to the HTC One [Rumor]

HTC M8 concept

When it comes to rumors or actual information regarding the HTC M8, evleaks is the name to follow. He has already given us a lot of info about the HTC M8, and now he has given us possible period of time of its release, as well as his description of what the phone looks like.

End of March may by the period of time the HTC M8 will be unveiled and launched, but then he had something interesting to say about how the phone looks.

Makes sense. The HTC One is a beautifully designed phone, which a lot of tech sites would vouch for. It isn’t shocking to me that it won’t strive away from that gorgeous design, I just find it funny how he talks about HTC already using the name HTC One S. I’m guessing that maybe the slight tweaks in design don’t compliment the phone to make it look like a hardcore successor to the HTC One, but as long as it still has that sexy design with BoomSound, and some powerful parts underneath the hood, everything should be okay. Let us know your thoughts about what he said.

Android KitKat for Sprint HTC One is available for manual update from Sprint

Android KitKat for Sprint HTC OneJust yesterday, the President of HTC America, Jason Mackenzie, came out to apologize saying that the carrier versions of Android KitKat destined for the HTC One would not be making it before the end of January as originally planned due to carrier certification. How quickly things chance as today, Sprint has said on its community site that Android KitKat for Sprint HTC One is now available via “customer initiated request”.

What this actually means is for everyone who wants the update with a Sprint HTC One to manually update their phones via the Settings Menu. If you’re unsure of how to do this, Sprint has put together a nice graphic to show you exactly how (see here). If you’re simply happy to wait till you phone updates automatically, you’ll only have to wait till February 11th when Sprint says the update will roll-out to all devices.

If you are able to successfully update your phone via this method, we’d love to hear from you in the comments. Unfortunately, there has been no word yet from the other carriers, but we’re willing to bet it will likely be over the next day or so when we do.

Canadian Carriers Begin HTC One Updates to Android 4.4.2

The U.S. update was placed on a temporary delay following some “Carrier Certification” that prevented them from making the 90 day deadline that HTC was shooting for. It might be a hit to the carriers and to HTC, but our friends to the north in Canada don’t have to wait any longer.

The Android 4.4.2 OTA update for the HTC One has started rolling out to owners all across the country this morning. Literally, Rogers, Bell, Virgin, TELUS, SaskTel and WIND Mobile are all pushing the update out to their HTC One users. The update weighs in at 585.44MBs, at least for one of the carriers and carries a software version of 4.19.631.9.

HTC One Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update CanadaIf you happen to be one of those lucky owners on any one of those carriers you might want to take a minute to check. To do that you will want a good amount of charge on your device and enough time on a Wi-Fi connection to pick it up. Head into your device Settings –> About Phone –> Software Update. You may or may not have it available yet as these sorts of updates tend to be on scheduled roll outs. So keep your eyes open.

US HTC One Misses Scheduled Android 4.4 KitKat Update

While the KitKat update process for the European HTC flagship has already initiated, US based owners will have to wait a little bit longer.

Carrier-banded handsets will not be receiving the update by the end of January, as previously promised by the company. Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC America, announced yesterday that the delay is due to carrier certification, which he hopes won’t take long. In fact he assumes that the whole procedure won’t last longer than a fortnight.

Props to HTC though for giving us some heads up instead of leaving us frustrated and wondering why our handset wasn’t seeded with the actual update.

HTC: “We’ll miss our self-imposed Android 4.4 target”

HTC president (U.S.) Jason Mackenzie has penned a post on the company’s website advising that the hardware maker will miss its self-imposed target for Android 4.4 KitKat. Initially expected to arrive for the HTC One this week, it appears that the process could take another week or two before it hits the U.S. versions of the handset. As you likely guessed, the delay comes from the carrier certification aspect.

The challenge we gave our teams, in cooperation with our carrier partners, has taught us a lot that will allow us to improve on our upgrade delivery in the future.  We remain resolved to provide timely updates and to be transparent about the process and status of our efforts.  Supporting our customers is a major priority for us and we thank you for your support of HTC!

We have to give HTC credit for both imposing its own deadline as well as the transparency. There’s nothing worse than waiting without any clue as to what we should expect.

Read the full open letter at HTC’s website.

HTC M8 to Launch in Four Colors on Launch Day?

htcm8-colors

The HTC M8 (One 2, One +…whatever) seems to get a new piece of information leaked out every other day. We already got word that the new HTC phone will get rid of those capacitive buttons, and evolve to the on-screen buttons. Today we have information from XDA producer and Android developer, Shen Ye, who tweeted out that the HTC M8 will come in four different colors on launch day.

He then followed up his tweet by tweeting out the four HTC M8 colors, putting the color codes right beside the name HTC One Two. Black, silver, red,and blue, are the color codes he tweeted out, so pick your poison. If you plan on purchasing the HTC M8, let us know which color you plan on getting.

Android 4.4.2 Rolling Out to HTC One Users in Europe

htcone-android-4-4-update

HTC One users, it is time to start getting a little excited. Last week we learned that Android 4.4 was ready for US HTC One users, it was just matter of certification before it started being rolled out from our carriers. The OTA update has been spotted in Europe already, and for a moment there, XDA had the update in their grasp for you impatient folks out there. Sadly, that page has gone missing, but if it happens to return I will update this post.

The build version for the update is 4.19.401.8, and it is a hefty 308.24 mb in size. It is only a matter of time before we start receiving word that one of our carriers starts rolling out the Android 4.4.2 update to the HTC One, so keep a lookout for it.
