HTC One M8 Google Play Edition “Coming Soon” for $699

Just like last year, HTC will be making the stripped down stock Android version of the recently announced HTC One M8 available through the Google Play Store. The GPE One M8 is listed as “Coming Soon” and is carrying a hefty price tag of $699.99. That would be $50 more than a developer edition of the device. Oddly enough, the Dev edition has since been pulled off the HTC order page too.

Google Play Edition HTC One M8We know the previous GPE HTC One ended up being a little bit of a problematic device for some. HTC has put a lot of work into the additional hardware and functions again this year in the BoomSound and Duo Camera, all of which are pretty heavily reliant on HTC’s software to work properly. We can only hope that they have things sorted well enough to make the GPE One M8 be everything it is, but just with stock Android.

There aren’t any noticeable spec changes from the official specs that were just announced. It will be unlocked and be supported on T-Mobile and AT&T networks.

“Blah, Blah, Blah. Go Ahead, Ask the Internet” HTC One M8 Commercials Start Rolling Out

Gary Oldman HTC One M8 ComemercialsQuite possibly one of my favorite aspects of a new device announcement is how the manufacturer, or event he specific carriers, plan to market the device in online video ads and TV spots. A few short hours after the announcement of the new HTC One M8, two commercial variants have hit YouTube from HTC staring actor Gary Oldman. The first commercial is a typical 30 second spot, while the second is a bit longer at the 1 minute mark. Here is the first one;

Kind of makes you giggle a little. The second one has an odd creepy factor to it where Gary Oldman says “Ask the Internet.” with a long pause “I’ll Wait.” All while he is just sitting there.

OnePlus to finally unveil its CyanogenMod-powered smartphone next month

one_plus_boxToday in New York City, HTC is finally “officially” unwrapping its “All New One” for the world to see, but that isn’t stopping newcomer OnePlus from trying to steal some of the Taiwanese company’s thunder by announcing its own upcoming smartphone unveiling.

With all leaks and teases aside, the OnePlus One will be officially unveiled April 23.

“Thanks for everyone’s patience and support over the last few months. We promise the wait will be worth it.”

The device has been a marketing marvel for OnePlus, the new company of ex-OPPO exec Pete Lau, with it announcing device features along the way. Features are said to include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor (upgraded from a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, due to community response), 3,100 mAh battery, 5.5-inch 1080p JDI display, 6 piece 13 MP f/2.0 Sony Exmor IMX214 and swappable back covers in a variety of materials. All this will be powered by a specially designed version of CyanogenMod “with exciting new elements and features.” The device is also said to be coming in at under $400 off-contract.

We’ve written how this device may be a game-changer in the smartphone industry, focusing on the user experience, but it remains to seen if all these rumors are true and if the new company will be able to deliver what they’ve been promising.

Stay tuned April 23 for the official unveiling.

HTC opens up BlinkFeed, allows apps like Foursquare and Fitbit to push data to your homescreen

Love it or hate it, Sense is growing up. BlinkFeed, the beating tiled heart of the HTC experience is now being opened up to developers through an SDK. That means that third parties will be able to push information to the stream of data that makes up your feed. For example, Fitbit will be able to keep you abreast of how many steps you’ve taken without you having to go into the app. Oh, and the Fitbit app does harvest movement data from the phone’s internal sensors, just like it does on the iPhone 5S, so you don’t really need that separate band. HTC announced one other launch partner for the BlinkFeed SDK — Foursquare. The location-based social network will pop up suggestions for lunch spots while you’re out and about. Of course, the company will have to convince other big names to hop on the bandwagon if BlinkFeed is going to really take off.

HTC One available today in the US, Verizon gets it in-store first

By now you probably know if you need HTC’s shiny new One in your life — now it all comes down to where and when you can nab it. Thanks to some wheeling and dealing, Verizon Wireless has a head start in the US: online and in-store sales start today at 1pm Eastern. AT&T and Sprint will kick off their online sales at that time too, but you can’t waltz into one of their brick-and-mortar stores to find one until April 11. As you might expect, the 16GB model will cost you $199 while the 32GB model comes in at $249… and if the thought of contracts makes you ill, you can buy one sans agreement for $649. The lone standout is T-Mobile, which won’t sell the device until some time next month (we’ve reached out for clarification and will update this story as we learn more). Of course, everything above assumes you want your carrier’s blessing. Don’t forget: HTC will sell unlocked and developer versions for $649 on its website, and a $699 Play Edition version should hit the Google Play Store soon too.

HTC pushing Sense 6.0 to the OG One, One Mini and One Max soon

Well, we don’t have a specific date, but HTC’s latest Sense skin — which the company insists on calling Sixth Sense — will be coming to it’s older models this spring. Last year’s One, the One Mini and One Max will all be getting updates in the coming months with Sense 6.0. While it’s not a complete surprise, it’s nice to know that HTC isn’t leaving its customers out in the cold. It’s all part of its HTC Advantage program which guarantees two year of software updates and support. That’s longer than even Google suports its Nexus phone. Hopefully we’ll get specific launch dates sooner, rather than later.

Select older HTC devices to receive Sense 6.0 update confirmed by leak

Ahead of the launch of the next generation HTC One later today, a recent leak for the roadmap of the HTC Sense 6.0 deployment for older devices confirms that a select few will get the updated software.

update

The new HTC One is set to come with an all-new Sense 6.0 skin bundled over Android 4.4 KitKat, but the update will extend to the first generation HTC One, followed by the HTC One Max, and HTC One Mini, which is scheduled to be deployed in the next few months.

Interestingly, the HTC Butterfly S will also get the update in June or July, but no other devices are scheduled for the update according to the recent leak.

HTC to release HTC One M8 Google Play Edition

With only a few hours until HTC reveal the HTC One M8, it seems the company have deployed some preparations in the Google Play Store ahead of the announcement.

HTC have uploaded several Sense-based apps into the Play Store, one of these being the HTC BlinkFeed launcher, which was introduced with the previous HTC One last year. As well as this, a Gallery app has been released for the HTC One M8, but of most significance is the description for the App which mentions “support for HTC One(M8) Google Play Edition is limited to HTC Photo Edit.”

It seems therefore a pretty safe bet that we are going to see a Google Play Edition of the HTC One M8 released today. This belief is reinforced with discovery about the HTC One launch page

If you simply view the source of the landing page, it seems HTC have preparred the go live page hidden behind the current graphic and it reveals some nice details.

htc one m8 details

The source code of the page reveals that the new HTC One M8 will be available on Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile, but there will also be a Google Play Edition device as indicated by the image placeholder. It also seems there’ll be a developer version of the handset too.

In addition, there’s confirmation of the Gun Metal Grey, Silver, Gold, and Black colours for the HTC One M8.

It seems all that’s left to do is wait for the official announcement.

HTC to release a smartwatch at NYC Event alongside new 2014 HTC One

Most partners who have adopted the Android Wear platform have teased their upcoming products, except HTC who despite being a partner of the platform, are yet to tease anything.

An interesting theory suggests HTC will infact use their upcoming event to showcase the new HTC One device to show off their new HTC smartwatch running Android Wear, consequently beating everyone to market.

HTC have yet to announce or even hint at any plans to release a smartwatch, yet they have been listed as an Android Wear partner. The only reason to hint at an upcoming product is to discourage consumers from purchasing over products released before it, and therefore wait for that offering. So what’s the reason not to hint at an upcoming product?

SmarterWatching suggest that the reasoning is due to the impending release of the HTC smartwatch and a teaser at this point would be relatively pointless given its upcoming reveal at the NYC event.

LG state their smartwatch will hit shelves in the summer, which isn’t too far away, and since HTC have a reputation of being able to turnaround manufacturing time and get a product to market quickly, releasing a smartwatch so shortly after the Android Wear announcement really isn’t a impossible possibility.

The All New HTC One and Original HTC One Compared in New VIdeo

all-new-htc-one-comparrison

HTC’s worse kept secret stars in a new video today, but this time we get a comparison to the original HTC One. It is a very well done video, and goes over every nook and cranny of the All New HTC One, and you get a good idea just how much different the new flagship is compared to its predecessor. Not that it is drastically different, but I didn’t realize how much taller the New One is. Guess that took a page out of Apple’s book when they made the iPhone 5s long instead of wider. So check out the video, and let us know how excited you are about tomorrow’s event.
