HTC posts $11 million profit in Q1 of 2015, expects higher revenue in Q2

HTC_One_M9_Back_HTC_Logo_TAHTC has posted their quarterly earnings for Q1 2015, and things look decent for the company. Revenue sat around $1.36 billion, up from $1.08 billion last year, and HTC actually managed to turn a profit instead of a loss like they did in the first quarter of 2014.

They only pulled in $11 million in profit, which isn’t massively successful, but anything is better than their $66 million loss from their previous first quarter.

HTC expects to bring in around $1.5 billion next quarter, so hopefully the HTC One M9 helps the company maintain profitability.

HTC Camera update brings RAW image support to the One M9

htc one m9 review aa (27 of 34)

We’ve know that RAW image support was coming to the HTC One M9 from day one, but it had yet to make it way into the final software. Thankfully, a new update to the HTC Camera app is finally bringing Raw capture to the One M9, where it will be found as a photo mode in the camera app.

One of the star features for the HTC One M9 is supposed to be its rear camera, which finally moves away from the UltraPixel setup of the M7 and M8. Unfortunately, poor post processing and other issues have led to an arguably somewhat lackluster experience. With access to RAW images, however, third party programs and just everyday photo enthusiasts might be able to edit the files themselves with the aim of creating better images.

Raw image support is obviously the biggest change here, but there’s also some minor changes effecting some other HTC devices as well. Here’s the changelog, for those interested:

  • Raw Camera mode, only available on the HTC One M9
  • Crop-Me-In mode, only available on the HTC One (M8 EYE) running Android 5.0 Lollipop and the HTC Desire EYE
  • Adjustable divider in Split Capture mode
  • Add and remove camera modes

To grab the latest version of the HTC Camera app, you’ll want to head on over to Google Play.

Android 5.1 to hit HTC One M8 in August

htc-one-m8-aqua-blue

Although the past few months have seen a plethora of smartphone manufacturers pushing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update out to their devices, Google has been busy working on the next minor update to the operating system, Android 5.1. The HTC One M8 was one of the “legacy” devices that received a 5.0 Lollipop update at the end of January. Users were disappointed to learn that HTC did not include the Sense 7 update in that package. HTC’s UK Twitter account has revealed the next update for the device will be coming in August with some of the improvements that users are looking for.

According to HTC UK, the next update for the HTC One M8 will include an update to Android 5.1 and it will include HTC’s Sense 7 UI. Based on some follow-up discussion in the Twitter thread, the Android 5.1 update for the HTC One M9 may hit at the same time, so HTC may be working to get those two devices on the same update schedule.

LG G4 vs HTC One M9 Quick Look

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-1

This year, Samsung and HTC both chose to announce their new flagships back at Mobile World Congress in February, while LG chose to wait until a few days ago to announce the new LG G4.

We’ve already reviewed the HTC One M9 and been hands on with the LG G4 but how does the best of LG compare with the best of HTC? HTC’s flagship smartphone went on sale at the beginning of April, four weeks before LG announced theirs but does HTC need to be worried by LG’s latest flagship? Let’s take a closer look.

Design

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-2

When designing smartphones, OEMs seem to choose between going for thin, flat handsets and curved designs. Both HTC and LG have opted for the latter. The LG G4 has a slightly curved build which is designed to make the handset ergonomically friendly, while the HTC One M9’s curves are more pronounced.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

brightcove.createExperiences();

On the front, the HTC One M9 features a 5.0-inch Full HD display – which offers 441 pixels per inch density – and is flanked by the dual BoomSound speakers above and beneath the screen. In comparison, the LG G4 has a 5.5-inch Quad HD display – which offers 538ppi density – but the real design win is for LG, who have managed to keep the bezels to a minimum.

The smaller bezels on the LG G4 result in a more immersive experience with the G4 offering 74.3% screen-to-body ratio, which is far superior to the 68.4% ratio offered by the One M9.

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-4

At its thickest point, the LG G4 measures 9.8mm while the HTC One M9 measures 9.6mm, but the curves are more pronounced on the G4 which measures just 6.3mm at its thinnest point at the edges. To keep the G4 as thin as possible, LG have stuck with the G3 design of having the power and volume buttons on the rear of the handset, while HTC have gone with a more traditional design and the power and volume keys are on the right side of the One M9.

The biggest trend this year is manufacturers who have dropped removable batteries and expandable storage from their handsets. Both LG and HTC somewhat buck this trend but LG have kept both of these in the G4.

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-9

The One M9 is made from a metal unibody without a removable battery and the microSD card slot can be accessed through a tray on the right. While the One M9 is made from a metal body, LG have opted for a plastic build coupled with a choice of either titanium-finished plastic rear cover or a vegetable-tanned real-leather back cover. The removable back cover on the G4 gives you access to the 3000mAh battery and the microSD card slot.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

brightcove.createExperiences();

There are many similarities between the LG G4 and the HTC One M9 but also a few differences to set them apart. Both handsets offer the best experience that the manufacturer can offer – although the One M9 Plus arguably offers a better package than the One M9 – and use similar curved designs to offer the best in-hand experience.

Hardware and Performance

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-10

Over the past few years, Qualcomm established itself as the best available processor manufacturer but 2015 is proving to be a challenge for the company. Previously, the Snapdragon range was used in almost all top-previous devices but this year, we’ve heard numerous reports of issues with the company’s latest Snapdragon 810 premium chipset.

The HTC One M9 was one of the first handsets to use the Snapdragon 810 but this hasn’t stopped talk of the overheating issues with Qualcomm’s latest processor. The One M9 is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 810 and in our M9 review, we found little issue with the performance offered by Qualcomm’s latest chipset.

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-6

The talk of problems with the Snapdragon 810 could have been one reason that LG opted to go for a different Qualcomm processor. Rather than use the 810, as it had in the G Flex 2, LG opted to use the Snapdragon 808 processor and LG have worked closely with Qualcomm to optimise the processor for the needs of the G4.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

brightcove.createExperiences();

Both the G4 and the One M9 have 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, which can be expanded by up to 128GB using a microSD card slot. On paper, there’s very little difference between the G4 and the One M9 but LG’s close relationship with Qualcomm and the optimisation of the processor to meet the G4’s needs means that LG’s flagship is likely to have slightly better performance.

However, we’ve not spent enough time with the G4 to confirm this and we’ll be putting it through its paces in a review in the weeks to come.

Camera

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-8

The camera is where both LG and HTC have made significant changes versus last year’s flagship.

The HTC One range has always used HTC’s own Ultrapixel sensor for the rear camera but this year, the Ultrapixel makes its way to the front and is replaced by a 20.7MP Toshiba-made sensor. The One M8 came with a duo camera – which allows you to change the focal point of an image after capturing it – and Optical Image Stabilisation but with the new sensor on the One M9, both of these features are missing.

In comparison, the LG G4 bumps up the 13MP sensor on the G3 to a 16MP shooter on the G4. The upgrade is about more than just megapixels, however, as the G4 offers an f/1.8 aperture package with a larger sensor than on any other smartphone. The G4 also comes with OIS and a colour spectrum sensor, which analyses scenes to achieve the right white balance automatically and accurately.

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-7

One of the other major upgrades in the G4 camera is the new manual mode, which offers professional controls for those who need complete control over their images. The manual mode comes with lots of ISO stops, manual focus, a full white balance gamut, a histogram and the ability to shoot RAW and JPEG images at the same time.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

brightcove.createExperiences();

We’ve only spent a few minutes with the LG G4 but on paper at least, the camera is far superior to the One M9. The combination of a colour spectrum sensor, OIS and f/1.8 aperture should, on paper, be superior to the 20MP module on the One M9. We will, of course, be bringing you a more in-depth look at the camera in the weeks to come.

Software

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-3

One area where HTC have traditionally excelled is the HTC Sense interface, which is regarded as one of the best available on the market. This year’s Sense 7 interface has been optimised further with BlinkFeed gaining some new features and a Theme manager to completely change the look and feel of your One M9.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

brightcove.createExperiences();

In comparison, LG’s G UX has traditionally revamped large parts of Google’s OS to provide a custom experience, which – due to the heavy interface and underpowered specs – suffered from lag and stutter. With the G4 UX 4.0, this has all changed as LG has optimised its software to produce a near Nexus-like experience.

LG-G4-vs-HTC-One-M9-12

LG and HTC have both worked closely with Google to integrate Google services and both the One M9 and G4 come with 100GB Google Drive storage free for two years. LG have also integrated Google Drive across their apps and designed their own apps to work natively with Android Wear.

HTC Sense 7 is still one of the finest interfaces available on Android but LG’s latest interface offers a fluid experience that’s now able to rival the best on the market. Whether the G4 UX 4.0 suffers from the traditional Android issue of slowing down after a few weeks of use remains to be seen, but we will bring you a closer look at this in the review.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

brightcove.createExperiences();

Wrap Up

Overall the LG G4 and HTC One M9 are likely to be high on your list if you’re looking for a new Android smartphone and each offer a premium experience. The G4 has a better display, removable battery and arguably better camera while the One M9 has a nicer build and better interface (although this is a subjective opinion).

It’s too early to determine exactly how much better – or worse – the LG G4 is compared to the One M9 but LG have certainly taken several strides forward since the G3. Rather than revamp the entire handset like Samsung, LG have followed HTC’s lead in creating a handset that’s better than the ones before it.

Stay tuned, as we’ll be bringing you a full review of the LG G4 and a more detailed look at how it compares to the competition in the weeks to come.

HTC debuts INK campaign for One M9

In August of last year, we covered the HTC One M8 Phunk Studio Edition, a limited edition of the device with only 64 total units. Phunk is a “contemporary art and design collective” from Singapore that made an eloquent design for the back of this version of the One M8.

Now, HTC is going to do the same with the One M9, this time with a body-art-inspired design, which you can see above. The company partnered with supermodel Jourdan Dann, known for her work with the likes of Victoria’s Secret, Hilfiger, and DKNY, and asked her to come up with the artwork. Dann is also an ambassador for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America.

According to HTC about the artwork for the One M9:

The open hand and eye symbolize the need for protection and strength while still being open and approachable in personality and style. The natural leaf elements and patterns around the outside of each visual reflect the growth in creativity that Jourdan is feeling at this time, and the sun and moon together represent balance and harmony in her character.

The HTC One M9 is one of the most beautiful smartphones ever produced, even though it has only changed slightly over the past few years. If you aren’t quite happy with the overall design of the phone, or want a more custom version of the handset, HTC has you covered. HTC INK is a new program launched by the company, which will offer limited edition One M9 handsets that feature custom-designed, body art-inspired engravings on the back of the smartphone.

To kickstart this new program, HTC has partnered with none other than worldwide fashion icon Jourdan Dunn to come up with the design. Dunn partnered with celebrity “ink-er” Cally-Jo Pothecary to create the design attached above. Here’s how HTC describes the first image:

Spec-sheet Skirmish: LG G4 vs the competition

lg g4 vs samsung galaxy s6 edge quick look aa (6 of 14)

The LG G4 has just joined the ranks of this year’s flagship smartphones, so let’s delve right on in and see how its hardware stacks up with the very best on offer this year.

Display

Much like Samsung, LG prides itself on its industry-leading mobile display technology. Last year’s LG G3 was one of the first to offer a QHD resolution display, a specification that is now rivaled by Samsung but few others. LG may not have boosted the resolution any further this year, but has set about refining its existing technology.

LG boasts that its new Quantum display offers 20 percent greater color reproduction, a 25 percent improvement in brightness and 50 percent greater contrast than its last display. Some users complained that colors can look a little washed out with the LG G3, so it’s good to see the company address this issue. LG is targeting the Digital Cinema Initiatives standard for color expression and boasts a 98% accuracy to the standard, which may rival the high bar already set by the Samsung Galaxy S6 this year.

g the Digital Cinema Initiatives standard for color expression and boasts a 98% accuracy to the standard, which may rival the high bar already set by the Samsung Galaxy S6 this year.

LG G4 hands on-13

The other big talking point with LG’s latest smartphones is its curved display. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge or the bendy G Flex 2, the G4 features a subtler curve. Ergonomically, there’s a case to be made that a slight curve helps it sit in the hand and rest against the face a little more naturally, as was the argument made for the old Galaxy Nexus.

lg g4 vs samsung galaxy s6 edge quick look aa (2 of 14)

Both the Galaxy S6 and G4 feature QHD displays that pack a punch with vivid colors. These two could spark a new battle between the best of AMOLED vs LCD.

Most of this year’s flagships are still sticking to the tried and tested 1080p resolution, which provides an excellent balance between gaming performance, battery life and image clarity. QHD’s edge in pixel density is certainly a luxury rather than a major benefit, but LG’s new Quantum Dot display and Samsung’s AMOLED are also pushing display quality in terms other than resolution too.

Processing package

This year the talk is all about 64-bit processors, with the arrival of new high-end mobile SoCs from Qualcomm and Samsung. However, unlike LG’s earlier G Flex 2 smartphone, the G4 does not feature Qualcomm’s very high-end Snapdragon 810, but instead drops down one notch to a 64-bit Snapdragon 808 package.

There are several key differences between the two, most noticeably the absence of two high-performance Cortex-A72 cores, making the 808 a hexa-core rather than octa-core chip. While unlikely to make any difference for most day to day tasks and web-based experiences, gamers and very heavy multitaskers may notice some difference. That said, we’ve already found that the LG UX user interface runs better on the G4 than it does on the Snapdragon 810 powered G Flex 2, so LG may have done some serious optimizing.

Cast your mind back to earlier discussions about big.LITTLE SoC designs and you’ll often find reference to hexa-core designs for smartphones and octa-core designs for tablets. In the pursuit of ever higher performance, smartphone OEMs have typically opted for as much power as possible, but the Snapdragon 808 is no slouch and may prove to offer a better balance of performance and battery life than its octa-core rivals, a similar argument is often made that 1080p is considered good enough by some. The smaller number of cores should also result in a cooler device as well, which might negate some of the expected performance differences. LG promises a 20 percent increase in battery life compared with the LG G3.

However, the Snapdragon 808 isn’t compatible with LPDDR4, meaning a drop back to LPDDR3 memory for LG. This leaves the handset behind the likes of the G Flex 2, Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9, when it comes to the cutting edge. The Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810 allow for 25.6GB/s peak memory bandwidth, while LPDDR3-933 tops out around 15GB/s, although again this will only be felt in more extreme processing situations.

  Snapdragon 810 Snapdragon 808 Snapdragon 805

GPU Adreno 430 Adreno 418 Adreno 420
Data Cat 9 LTE Cat 9 LTE Cat 4 LTE
Process 20nm 20nm 28nm

Finally, the LG G4 features an Adreno 418, which again is slower than the Snapdragon 810s Adreno 430 and sits behind some of last year’s Snapdragon 805 powered handsets, which feature an Adreno 420. Qualcomm doesn’t share enough about its GPU architecture for us to make too much of a comparison, but consumers might not see too much of a performance jump from last year’s LG G3, which was a bit hit and miss given the handset’s QHD resolution. Qualcomm suggests a performance increase of 20 percent between the 330 and 418, but we have no idea under what conditions that can be achieved.

In the SoC department, performance enthusiasts may not be thrilled with LG’s choice to opt for a Snapdragon 808 over the now commonplace Snapdragon 810 found in the One M9 and Xperia Z4, but we don’t have any complaints based on our initial hands-on time.

Camera

Camera technology was the other big focus feature for the G4 and the paper specs boast a sensor resolution that rivals the majority of flagships on the market today. As well as just increasing the sensor resolution, LG is focusing on sharper colors, thanks to an additional “color spectrum sensor”, optical image stabilization has been improved and the laser autofocus feature remains useful.

lg g4 first look aa (31 of 32)

Low light performance should be one of the best around, thanks to the design’s  f/1.8 aperture, which bests the Galaxy S6’s f/1.9 setup. With HTC again not quite hitting mark in low light scenarios and very little changing in Sony’s setup, LG and Samsung may forge ahead of the pack in the camera segment.

Like other high-end devices, LG is giving additional power to photographers with the introduction of a new manual mode, which offers enhanced control over ISO, focus, and picture formats, among others. Both HTC and Samsung have included manual modes in their latest smartphones too.

LG has uploaded some impressive looking sample shots, but we’ll have to wait to see how the G4 stacks up against the S6’s excellent low light performance and the higher resolution sensors in the M9 and Z4.

On the front of the smartphone LG has included an 8MP sensor, which rivals the resolution of main smartphone cameras from a few years back. This year’s flagships have all upped their game, but LG has taken selfie quality up another notch. Although we should give a mention to the Oppo N3 for the most innovative self-experience.

(Not so) little extras

The absence of a removable battery and microSD card slot from the Samsung Galaxy S6 was a divisive design choice, especially given that most other flagship devices have at least kept the optional microSD card slot. LG keeps both options open, which might be a compelling factor for some. However, Samsung’s latest flagship still offers by far the most internal storage for those who want as much space as possible out of the box.

Design atheistic and build materials has also become an increasingly important point of contrast in the high-end section. Both Samsung and LG have finally cottoned on to the praise heaped at HTC’s use of materials, and LG has arguably gone one step further to offer consumers almost a Moto Maker range of choice. While some may prefer HTC’s metal finish or Samsung’s glass, leather is no less a premium material that will suit some people’s tastes.

However, these new materials do come at the expensive of dust and water resistance, which were big features in the last two generation of smartphones. Sony’s Xperia Z4 leads the way with an IP68 rating this year, while the other flagships appear to have dropped mention of a rating altogether. LG’s G Flex 2 has a self-healing back, but that’s not quite as useful.

As for software, LG’s calendar and gallery apps have been tweaked for better integration and overall the focus has been on making LG’s UI more intelligent. There’s a meaningful difference between the software packages offered by each vendor. Samsung still leads the way with S Health but arguably still has the most clutter, while HTC’s BlinkFeed is excellent for eager readers and Sony is slick all around.

However, LG promises a more “Nexus like” experience this time around, which should appease those who have previously complained about lag ridden software. Samsung has also made a conscious effort to improve in this regard, although HTC and Sony have set a high bar as far a smooth and useful interfaces go. At the very least, there’s a dose of Android Lollipop all around with this year’s flagships.

Thoughts

Although the LG G4 may not dominate the paper specs like the G3 did last year, there’s a good case to be made that LG’s slightly different approach may result in a better overall user experience. By focusing on battery life, display and camera performance, and design aesthetics, LG could come out on top in the areas where consumers actually spend most of their time.

We’ll have to see if this balanced approach pays off when the handset makes it way to consumers in June.

Here’s the latest in HTC’s series of weird ads

HTC has been regaling us with unusual commercials and promos for quite some time now. On the one hand, we can’t help admire their courage to try something different. On the other… there’s got to be a better way.

The latest in a series that most recently brought us a parody rap anthem and a series of surrealist “short films” starring Robert Downey Jr. is a clip called “Cellami.”

Apparently, if you suffer from SAD (Samsung Affective Disorder), iOS (Irritable Operating System), or “bi-phonal displeasure disorder,” the best treatment is a drug called Cellami. Only available as suppository, Cellami’s list of side effects is extensive and rather… exotic. Or you can just use a One M9. Your call.

What about this ad? Yay or nay?

HTC gets satirical: Choose a HTC One M9 to get rid of “Bi-phonal Displeasure Disorder”

HTC‘s Technical Description ads for the HTC One M8 were pretty hilarious, but their latest ad for the HTC One M9 is downright devious. Asking watchers if they have “Bi-phonal Displeasure Disorder”, HTC suggests some alternative treatments such as taking Cellami, an imaginary drug which results in numerous side-effects, like “oily plastic dischargers”, or just to get a HTC One M9 to avoid all of this altogether. Check out the ad below:

It’s pretty obvious that the primary target of this ad are Samsung and Apple users, claiming that these consumers will suffer from SAD (“Samsung Affective Disorder”) and iOS (“Irritable Operating System”) due to their likely miserable smartphone experience. Whether this strategy will actually work with these users is questionable, but we sure appreciate HTC’s effort on the entertainment front and we can’t wait to see more of this in the future.

HTC tries to get creative with Cellami

htc_cellami

HTC has released a new video that takes aim at Samsung, Apple, and really all other smartphone manufacturers through a spoof of pharmaceutical ads. The ad is for a fictional drug called Cellami which is supposed to help someone suffering from Bi-phonal Displeasure Disorder.

In the ad, HTC takes shots at Samsung by claiming Cellami can also treat SAD, or Samsung Affective Disorder, and at Apple which produces iOS, or Irritable Operating System. Cellami is described as causing a variety of side effects like blue teeth, thumb loss and “oily plastic discharges.” The video is littered with a variety of disclaimers along the bottom of the screen warning against taking it at night, before consuming citrus drinks, or when in the nude amongst others.

To avoid all these bad side effects, HTC says users can just get an HTC One M9. Their device will not only cure all the issues related to Bi-phonal Displeasure Disorder or other maladies, it does so in a safe manner.
