Android 4.4.4 rolling out to AT&T branded HTC One M8

htc one m8 outdoors (1 of 17)

While some HTC One M8 owners are eagerly waiting for the Android Lollipop update to appear, AT&T has finally gotten around to updating its model of the handset with last year’s Android 4.4.4 update. The same update rolled out to other carrier branded handsets all the way back in October.

The 3.42.502.1 software versions brings with it a host of bug fixes and tweaks, including improvements to HD Voice and the handset’s battery life. However, HTC’s Eye Experience software suit is sadly absent from the update, as it is still listed as in the certification stage on HTC’s website. Speaking of which, Lollipop still appears to be in the integration stage for the AT&T handset variant, meaning that it has not yet reached certification. The same applies for other carriers as well.

Here is a copy of the changelog:

  • Enables HD Voice
  • Updates Android OS to Android 4.4.4
  • Security enhancement
  • Bluetooth enhancement
  • Adds AMBS Cloud Messaging Integration
  • Adds Copy and Paste camera feature
  • Adds Usage Manager App
  • Improves battery performance
  • Updates AT&T Ready2Go
  • Updates Visual Voicemail

If you haven’t received the update notification yet, you can always head on over to Settings > Software > Check for updates to manually force a check.

HTC One M8 unlocked and dev edition devices are seeing Lollipop rollout!

htc one m8 outdoors aa (9 of 14)

Earlier this morning we caught a glimpse of Android 5.0 Lollipop for the HTC One M8 via an unofficial video leaked to the web. While a close up look is better than nothing, we’re sure HTC owners are eagerly awaiting the actual rollout. The good news is that, for owners of unlocked or developer edition One M8 handsets, it appears that the day has finally come!

News of the update comes from HTC’s Mo Versi, who revealed the good news on Twitter. While Mo says the OTA will start rolling out tonight, we have already heard several reports across the web that suggest some folks are already seeing the upgrade. If checking for an update yields no result for you just yet, don’t panic, as we imagine it will be a matter of hours, days or even weeks before it reaches everyone.

Keep in mind that those with carrier-branded HTC One M8 hardware will likely be waiting quite a bit longer for Lollipop, though we’ll be sure to update you as soon as we know more. As for what’s new? We don’t have a full change-log just yet, though obviously Lollipop is the biggest change here. We imagine that at least some of HTC’s apps have been updated a little bit but we have no specifics for you at this time.

For those that already received the update, what region are you in and what do you think so far? Any other notable changes outside of Lollipop? Let us know in the comments below.

HTC One M8 developer and unlocked models get Android 5.0 update

HTC One M8 gray Gold Silver

HTC One M8 Gray Gold

As promised, HTC is ready to deliver its Android 5.0 update in a very timely manner. A tweet today from VP of product management Mo Versi tells us that the unlocked and developer editions of the One M8 are receiving Lollipop updates. According to replies in his tweeter stream some users are already getting the software.

Keep in mind that these are not branded by carriers and that those models are still waiting for the Android 5.0 update. But, given the speed in which HTC has been moving, I would not be surprised if we saw those trickle out in the next few weeks.

Lollipop for HTC One (M8) getting close, leaked video shows it off

htc-one-m8-launch-aa-8-of-27 resized

If you needed a reminder that the HTC One (M8) does not yet have Android Lollipop, an unofficial video leak has popped up, showing off what the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop release and Sense 6 look like on the HTC One (M8).

The leak comes out of Vietnam and appears to be pre-release software, but things look fairly similar to the leaked screenshots we had a few weeks back. For all it is worth, we can say that this is what you should expect to see when the official OTA hits your One, soon.

Things are looking fairly snappy, which should be no surprise as the One packs the Snapdragon 801 SoC and 2GB of RAM. Also evident in the video is how fast you can fill up the new Recents interface. With the option to turn each open web browser tab into an individual tile in the Recents list, things can build up quickly. Don’t forget also that your Recents list will now survive a device reboot, like it or not.

Lollipop HTC One M8

You are obviously wondering when exactly the OTA of Android Lollipop will hit for the One (M8), and we can only again reference HTC’s original promise to push out to your device by the end of January. As we are coming up on half way through the month, that really could mean you’ll see the update any day now. Be sure to hit HTC’s update page to keep track, or just hang out with us, we’ll let you know the moment we have confirmed news.

HTC is on track to do fairly well in getting the Android Lollipop update to users. Not to say that they’ve kept up with manufacturers. Motorola, for example, has already had Lollipop on their major release phones for several weeks now, and aim to have the release out to all of their 2013 and 2014 phones “very soon”. Still, HTC pushing out within 90 days from the official code release is fairly good, at least their transparency on the process is appreciated.

We asked this last time, but again, are you liking what you are seeing of Android Lollipop and Sense 6 for your HTC One (M8)?

The last two major software releases have seen HTC boldly proclaim that they will bring the latest software to their flagship devices 90 days from the update’s release. Android 5.0 update for the One M8 will start rolling out in 1-2 weeks

HTC_One_M8_Main_TA

According to LlabTooFeR, who is well in the loop about HTC related information, the One M8 will start receiving its Android 5.0 update within the next two weeks. He mentions that EU and WWE (Worldwide English) regions will be the first to get the update, but there’s still no word on when the American carrier variants of the handset will receive the coveted update.

This is pretty much everything he mentions in his tweet with no word on whether there will be any new additions to the Lollipop ROM. But earlier leaks have given us a good idea of what to expect from the Android 5.0 ROM for HTC flagships, so there are barely any surprises left. While we expect there to be some Material Design elements with the ROM, HTC will maintain its stock theme and make some improvements to the look and feel of the home screen.

We expect to get more word on this new ROM over the coming weeks.

Mad scientist sends a bunch of HTC One M8s to the stratosphere

If you’ve never seen YouTube user Colin Furze in action, you’re frankly missing out. From DIY Wolverine claws to walking on the ceiling, this guy makes everything you wish you could. His most recent video is one of his best, as he sends multiple HTC One M8 handsets into the stratosphere using balloons.

How does he do this, you ask? He packs 2-4 M8s into a styrofoam box, then attaches a few phones to mounts for filming purposes. He then ties everything to a high-altitude balloon, and they’re off. Not only does he send the devices into space, once the box reaches 20,000 feet, they set off a bunch of fireworks to make it even more insane. The devices keep rising all the way up to 106,500 feet, making it the first cell phone recording of that altitude. The coolest part? All of the devices survived the sub-zero temperatures they went through in space.

HTC has been working on many different projects in their Creatography initiative lately, and you can find out more of what the company is doing by visiting their website. But honestly, none of the other videos are quite as awesome as this one.
