HTC One M8 reportedly won’t see Android 5.1 until August

htc one m8 launch aa (13 of 27)

Over the last year or two, Motorola and HTC have established a rep for being the quickest OEMs when it comes to updating flagship devices to newer versions of Android, but that’s apparently not the case with Android 5.1 — at least as far as HTC is concerned. While Samsung has already reportedly jumped ahead to Android 5.1.1 with the T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge, HTC has taken to Twitter to reveal that we probably won’t be seeing Android 5.1 with Sense 7 on the One M8 until at least August.

The official HTC tweet actually comes from the UK branch, but it’s safe to assume a similar timeline will apply globally, with US carriers models being some of the last to receive the update.

HTC also mentions the update for the One M7, only saying that “nothing has been confirmed” for the device so far. Considering the M7 is getting up there in age, don’t be too surprised if the One M7 doesn’t make the leap forward to Android 5.1.

Considering the 5.1 update brings a number of fixes to the table that should improve the Lollipop experience, it’s a shame that we have to wait this long. Then again, it’s possible that HTC is just playing it safe with the timeline and could end up releasing it sooner.

Android 5.1 to hit HTC One M8 in August

htc-one-m8-aqua-blue

Although the past few months have seen a plethora of smartphone manufacturers pushing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update out to their devices, Google has been busy working on the next minor update to the operating system, Android 5.1. The HTC One M8 was one of the “legacy” devices that received a 5.0 Lollipop update at the end of January. Users were disappointed to learn that HTC did not include the Sense 7 update in that package. HTC’s UK Twitter account has revealed the next update for the device will be coming in August with some of the improvements that users are looking for.

According to HTC UK, the next update for the HTC One M8 will include an update to Android 5.1 and it will include HTC’s Sense 7 UI. Based on some follow-up discussion in the Twitter thread, the Android 5.1 update for the HTC One M9 may hit at the same time, so HTC may be working to get those two devices on the same update schedule.

HTC One M8 to get Android 5.1 Lollipop update in August

Lately a lot of flagship phones have been receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, and the latest device to jump on the bandwagon is none other than last year’s top rated Android device, the HTC One M8.

HTC has announced that users of the One M8 in the UK will begin receiving the latest version of Android sometime in August. On its Twitter account for the United Kingdom, HTC revealed that the “One M8 will have a Software Update for Android Version 5.1 and Sense 7 in August 2015.”

Since the software build of phones in the UK resembles the international versions, we can expect global upgrade of the HTC One M8 a few weeks after that. The carrier specific US handsets should also receive the update within a few weeks after the UK upgrade.

The device received the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade in January this year.

Although HTC has not mentioned anything about upgrading the One M7 to HTC Sense 7, it is being assumed that the 2013 flagship device will be two years old, which is usually considered to be the end of software upgrade cycle.

HTC’s Sense 7 to land on HTC One M8 in next update

HTC_One_M8_Back_HTC_Logo_TA_02

Owners of the HTC One M8 have started to receive their Android Lollipop update, but they have noticed that they do not get HTC’s latest interface, Sense 7. That missing piece is surely a disappointment to some, but leaving it out of the current update probably helped get Lollipop onto the One M8 a little bit faster. HTC vice president Mo Versi has now confirmed that the One M8 will get Sense 7, but it will not be until the next major upgrade is released.

Versi has not provided any information regarding a time frame for the next update to be released. His comments came in response to a question about the update rolling out to AT&T devices that started earlier this week. He has also announced that the One M8 GPE has been approved to receive an update to Android 5.1. The current version of Lollipop rolling out to AT&T One M8 devices is 5.0.2, so the next update will probably take those devices up to 5.1 and include Sense 7. Since all the pieces are in place, the process should go fairly quickly – at least as quickly as carrier certifications go.

Sense 7 to hit HTC One M8 in the next software update

LG G3 Vs HTC One M8-17

HTC has been pushing Lollipop to several versions of its One M8, and it looks like the company is now preparing to upgrade the M8 to the latest version of Sense as well.

Answering to a customer inquiry on Twitter, HTC Product Manager for the Americas Mo Versi said M8 users should expect Sense 7 to come with the next software update.

Versi didn’t provide any details on the actual availability of this “next software update,” but our guess is we should see it within a few weeks. Sense 7 delivers relatively few changes in terms of appearance, while new features include a comprehensive Theming app, the Home widget, which groups your most frequently used apps, as well as some personalization features added to HTC’s well-known BlinkFeed. Performance improvements and bug fixes are to be expected.

The One M8 remains a top choice for HTC fans. Available at a smaller price, but quite similar to the M9 in terms of performance and features, the device shines through its design. And, for American customers, HTC is throwing in a very nice perk with the Uh-Oh extended warranty plan, which includes a free replacement in the first year or $100 in credit towards the purchase of a new HTC One phone.

HTC launches the One M8s in Europe

As leaks continue to pour in about different variants of HTC’s latest flagship device – the One M9, the Taiwanese manufacturer has announced a cheaper version of its old bestseller, the One M8. Dubbed as the One M8s, the new handset has the same metal chassis as its older sibling but packs a better battery (2,840 mAh) and a slightly stripped down chipset.

It features the same 5-inch FHD display and BoomSound speakers on the front. In the imagining department, the One M8s sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture in comparison to the 4-Ultrapixel camera of the original M8 that has the similar aperture. Now whether ultrapixels provide better images than megapixels is still under debate, with many considering the term ‘ultrapixel’ a marketing gimmick by HTC. As for the selfie camera, the new device has the same 5-megapixel sensor with f/2.8 aperture, which means slightly poor images than the HTC One M8’s front camera with f/2.0 aperture in low light conditions.

As far as the hardware in concerned, the device packs a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor based on Cortex-A53 cores. At a higher clock speed, they should be able to support 1080p video recording from front as well as back camera in addition to fast performance and lag free experience. The CPU is coupled with 2GB of RAM, 16 GB and Adreno 405 GPU.

Connectivity options include LTE Cat 4, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, USB 2.0, NFC.and Bluetooth 4.1 (against Bluetooth 4.0 of the One M8). Also, it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box.

HTC is launching the One M8s in the UK for £380 ($564), which is not a lot less than the One M8. The new M8 model will be made available in other European nations soon but the date hasn’t been revealed yet. Considering the slight differences in pricing and specifications, which phone would you choose – the One M8 or the One M8s or the new HTC One M9?
