Nest Learning Thermostat now available on Google Play

With a $3.2 billion hole to fill, Google’s opened up yet another avenue for you to acquire Nest. The company’s smart thermostat can now be had via Google Play, available for the standard retail price of $249. The Protect smoke detector is currently off the market following a bug that popped up earlier this month, so it’s not available through Play, but the connected temp controller sure is, earning the top promo slot on Google’s online store. Additionally, in celebration of Earth Day, Google’s planting a tree for every Nest sold through Play today, so if going green is on the docket, it might just be time to pull out that wallet.

Nest Thermostat makes its way to the Google Play Store, unsurprisingly for $249

Google bought up Nest earlier this year for a reported $3.2 billion. We all expected Google to eventually turn around and make it part of the line-up up products that we can buy through the Play Store. Seems that day has finally come as we now see Nest being splashed on the front page of the Play Store linking into the Devices section.

Google Play Store NestFitting launch day really, being Earth Day and all. In simplest terms Nest is smart thermostat that learns and can be controlled via your Android device. They say it is a simple self install device that takes a person less than 30 minutes to install if you are comfortable flipping of your breaker and following some color coded guides. It is compatible with 95% of all heating and cooling systems installed in most homes today. Google didn’t drop the price tag though, which some expected. The Nest will still set you back $249.00 and will ship in 1 to 2 business days. As an added “feel good” to your purchase, Google will plant a tree for every Nest purchased today for Earth Day.

If you are interested, head over to the Play Store and grab one.

Google tweets screenshot of new Dialer app

Google-Dialer-app-blue-Hera-640x568

It seems like the Google Nexus account may have accidentally tweeted out an image of the new Android Dialler app in response to a support request on Twitter.

Ok so it’s not the most exciting leak in the world, but it shows yet another app that may be updated independant of the Android Operating System itself, and also shows that the Dialler app is due to get a splash of blue colour.

I wonder what else Google has up it’s sleeve for redesigning the look of Android as it moves into a flatter UI design?

LG’s upcoming G Watch detailed with new specs and images

LG G Watch

LG’s official site has just spilled a few extra tidbits about the G Watch, which is due out in the summer and will be based on Google’s Android Wear platform. For a start, there’ll be two color options: “stealth black” or “champagne gold,” both with plain rubbery straps and slab-like faces that are meant to look “timeless.” Fortunately, though, the G Watch will have the time written all over it during actual use, because LG is promising that the screen will never go to sleep — unlike Samsung’s Gear 2, where you have to wake up the display with a movement of your arm. One last important detail is a confirmation that the device will be waterproof and dustproof — something that, strangely, still can’t be taken for granted in the smartwatch market.

Nest’s Learning Thermostat may be headed to Google Play

Since you can buy pretty much nearly every Google device — that’s all the Nexus gadgets, the Google Edition phones, the Chromecast and all those Chromebooks — on Google Play, it only makes sense that a product from Nest, the search giant’s latest acquisition, will be listed there as well. It’s not in the Play store just yet, but the eagle-eyed folks over at Droid Life noticed that the smart thermostat was listed on Google Play’s support pages as being available for Canada, the UK and the US (we’ve got a screenshot of it after the break). It appears that Google has since pulled the listing, however, which leads us to believe it was premature. Nevertheless, it certainly seems plausible given that Nest is now officially part of the Mountain View family. As to whether we’ll see the Protect on the Google Play, however, depends on how soon that whole accidental-switch-off thing can be fixed.

AT&T hopes to fight Google Fiber with gigabit internet in more cities

Fiber optic ends

AT&T isn’t letting Google Fiber’s expansion plans go unanswered. The telecom giant has announced that it’s looking at bringing its GigaPower internet service to as many as 21 additional big cities and their nearby municipalities. There’s some potential for direct competition with Google, as both companies are looking into gigabit access for key urban areas like Atlanta, San Antonio and San Jose. However, it’s clear that AT&T is taking some initiative here — it’s also exploring rollouts in Chicago, Los Angeles and other hubs that aren’t currently on its rival’s roadmap.

With that said, don’t start planning a 4K internet video marathon just yet. Like Google, AT&T still wants to discuss its intentions with community leaders. The carrier won’t launch in a given area unless it sees that there’s enough demand, network infrastructure and “receptive policies,” so there’s a chance that your town won’t make the cut. Even if the expansion only reaches a few cities, though, it’s still good news for Americans who’ve been demanding better data speeds and more competition for years.

Google Glass now displays your iPhone’s text messages

On the heels of last week’s KitKat update, Google Glass nabbed up two more notable improvements today. First, iOS users can now have their text messages displayed on Glass, after a quick toggle of the Bluetooth settings. Here’s the catch: “due to some limitations with iOS,” you wont be able to reply to those messages directly from the headset. There’s also a new Calendar Glassware that situates an agenda to the left of the home screen. Tapping a card in that timeline will allow you edit title, time, location and even RSVP. If you’d rather just skip those festivities altogether, you can delete events or hide them from view. Both of the new features are said to be rolling out to early adopters “in the next few days,” so keep your eyes peeled.

Google Hangouts merges conversations and texts messages from the same sender

Since Google tacked on SMS messages to its Hangouts app, it has been tweaking the experience to keep convos on the up and up, and this week it’s making a major change. In version 2.1 of the software, text messages and Hangout conversations from the same contact are neatly merged into a single thread, allowing you to send notes via either method. In order to keep track of things, the two sources are color-coded, and you can separate them any time you’d like. There’s also a split in the contacts list for quick searching: folks you chat with on Hangouts and phone contacts that you keep to SMS. For easy access, there’s a new home screen widget and improved quality for video calls. If your Android device hasn’t alerted you to the update yet, head over to that second source link to snatch it up.

HTC-made Nexus 8 reportedly coming this summer

SONY DSC

When it comes to producing affordable Nexus tablets, Google’s on a roll — and it’s looking to take advantage of that momentum. After partnering with ASUS on a 7-inch tablet each of the last two summers, the software giant is now reportedly working with HTC on an 8-inch version slated to launch in the third quarter of this year. The report comes to us from hit-and-miss DigiTimes, which tells us that Google is switching to HTC because it wants to push a new design, and ASUS is more interested in selling tablets and phones under its own brand instead.

Unless you count the Google Play edition of the LG G Pad 8.3, this will be Google’s first time offering a Nexus Android experience on an eight-inch tablet, and will be HTC’s first shot at designing a device for the series since the Nexus One. It’s also an interesting move by the Taiwanese company, which has recently expressed interest in penetrating more segments of the market in the hopes of getting its products in more hands. Of course, DigiTimes explains that Google may not be as aggressive in selling the Nexus 8 as it was with previous tablets; apparently the previous versions did well enough to encourage Android’s penetration into the tablet market, and Nexus slates simply don’t have as significant an influence as they once had.

Since I/O takes place the last week of the second quarter, it’s uncertain if Google would use that opportunity to announce the device and officially release it later, but that’s part of the magic of the show — there’s always a surprise or two.
