A confession of mine, I have never eaten at Dunkin’ Donuts.  I have heard great things about them, and I love donuts, I just happen to live in a city where there are just a few Dunkin’ Donut restaurants.  My brother, on the other hand lived in Boston, and told me Bostonians love their Dunkin’ Donuts and they are everywhere.  Today Google and Dunkin’ Donuts partnered up to make your purchases easier by integrating Google Wallet with their  mobile Dunkin’ Donut cards.

Instead of typing in credit card information to recharge the cards, users can now purchase recharges through Google Wallet.  Google Wallet works for Dunkin’ Donuts, just like buying a movie from the google Play store would work.  All you have to do is key in your password and the payment will be processed.

Dunkin’ Donuts, if you read this, I wouldn’t mind a free sample or two of your donuts and coffee.

Google Receives Spoiler Patent

spoiler-alert

We’ve all been there: you’re perusing the internet the day after Game of Thrones comes on, but you’re going to watch it in the evening with HBO Now. Suddenly, you are attacked with news of Tormund’s death (everyone calm down, I’m joking, he’s still kicking.) and the entire episode is ruined. Worry no more, because Google has received a patent that will allow it to view what you’ve watched from your streaming services and remove results that relate to unwatched episodes of your favorite shows.

Although this seems to be a great idea, it’s important to remember that Google doesn’t always pursue its patents, so we may never see this come to fruition.

Google announces Android Wear watch faces exceed 1,000 and new straps are here

android_wear_watch_faces_collection

On the same day that Apple Watch reviews are being published online, Google has made an announcement regarding Android Wear. The wearables platform, which currently focuses solely on smartwatches, now offers more than 1,000 watch faces to its users. Google proudly says there is “a watch face for everyone.” Notice the abundance of them featured in the mosaic above. Watches faces cover fashion, fun, and information.

Adding to the overall style of any Android Wear smartwatch is the wider selection of straps. Most of the devices available with Android Wear support the standard 22mm bands, so Google has highlighted options from select strap makers. This week, the Google Store will have a curated set of options for consumers to choose from.

Hit the break for a look at some of the new straps.

YouTube informs content creators of paid offering that will eliminate ads

youtube_live_logo

The amount of money generated from advertisements is massive and keeps many companies and services afloat. However, consumers are not the biggest fans of ads and, in many cases, will gladly pay to not see them. YouTube has been cashing in on ads for years but will soon allow viewers to eliminate them.

A letter sent to YouTube content creators informs them that a paid offering is on the way. The paid offering will allow subscribers to not see a single ad while also saving videos for offline viewing. Pricing reportedly sits around $10 per month. There is even a possibility that the $10 price is lowered when a consumer chooses a category-specific subscription. It would make sense for parents taking advantage of YouTube Kids to opt for a subscription that focuses on children’s programming.

Content creators are being told that they can place videos behind a paywall. Even if a content creator does not want to be involved in the paid offering, they must accept the change in terms through the Creator Studio Dashboard. YouTube will switch any resisting channels to private.

YouTube collects around 45% of the advertising revenue generated by a channel while subscriptions will be pooled. Partners receive 55% of the total and individuals receive a different amount based on how much activity the channel sees.

YouTube’s ad-free video subscription could arrive before year’s end

Google announced YouTube’s Music Key streaming subscription last fall, and an ad-free video service is also said to be on the way. Bloomberg reports the paid plan that nixes those pre-roll advertisements will launch before the end of the year, citing a source familiar with the project. The company sent a letter to YouTube partners today painting the broad strokes, including a mention of the upcoming paid tier and updated terms. “By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising service,” the letter explains. Details are scarce at the moment, but we’ll certainly hear more about things like pricing and offline playback in the weeks to come. The aforementioned Music Key service launched late last year, and there was a pilot program for paid channels in 2013, so the idea of paying for YouTube content isn’t new. It also offers a Kids option, and there’s likely a ton of folks who’d pay a (small) fee to skip those awful Progressive ads.

Google may be working on a service that could easily connect you with a local handyman

Google Logo Angle

If you need flight information or car insurance quotes, Google makes it very easy to get that info at a moment’s notice. But what if you’re interested in a service that’s much more localized than that? As of now, plumbers, electricians, roofers and other home-service providers really only offer business hours and contact information through Google Search, though that may change sometime soon. According to a new report, Google may be working on a service that will allow you to easily connect with a handyman in your area.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, unnamed sources explain that local service providers will be able to upload their scheduling information to Google, giving users the ability to sign up for appointments directly through their search results. Unlike signing up for car insurance or flights, the new service aims to provide an easier way to get in contact with folks in your area. But that doesn’t come without a few hurdles.

Google has been able to implement these services for airlines, hotel chains and insurance companies mainly because they have more employees and nationally-known businesses. The problem with getting local businesses involved is the lack of manpower to feed Google the correct scheduling information in a timely fashion. The service might get off to a rough start, but once a good number of local businesses sign up, it’s easy to see that it has the potential to be quite convenient.

The report suggests that this new service will be unveiled at Google’s annual advertiser summit in May, so we might not have to wait too much longer to get more information.

KitKat beats out Jelly Bean for the first time, as Lollipop gathers steam – April data

april 2015 android distribution data

Google released the Android distribution numbers for April 2015, and, for the first time, KitKat surpassed Jelly Bean versions as the most popular version of Android.

To give developers a better understanding of the Android ecosystem, Google releases monthly estimates of the relative number of devices running each version of Android. This includes devices running Android 2.2 or higher that have checked in Google’s Play Store servers over the previous week.

Data for April shows two interesting developments. The first is KitKat’s rise to absolute dominance, with Android 4.4 now running on 41.4%, more than the combined share of Android 4.1, 4.2, and 4.2, which is 40.7%. KitKat (API level 19) has had the largest share of any single API level for a while now, but until April, Jelly Bean (API level 16-18) held the lead when counted together.

The second noteworthy development is the new entry of Android 5.1 Lollipop (API level 22). The new version was officially introduced on March 9, and it managed to get on the radar with a 0.4% share in less than a month. That’s compared to Android 5.0, which needed a couple of months to register (versions with less than 0.1% share are not included in this stat).

Lollipop is now at a combined 5.4% (compared to 3.3% last month), and with updates reaching more devices, as well as a couple of real heavy hitters in the pipeline, its share will jump even more next month.

Google planning on helping users to connect with handymen in new service

Google_Logo_7356Google’s latest project will be to help users and home maintenance workers connect with each other easier through search results. This service is expected to be announced later this year during the company’s annual advertising summit, and will give handymen special links like the search engine does with flights, hotel rooms, and other products. You can bet that’ll get worked into Google Now at some point, too.

Local repair work is tough for companies to capitalize on because of how segmented and regional all of it is, but that hasn’t stopped some big names from trying to tackle the issue. Amazon recently launched a similar service, and although Google probably won’t be contracting out work for you, it’ll make it easier for you to find someone in the area that will come fix your sink or repair your roof.

Other details on the service are pretty scarce at this point, but we’ll definitely know more later in the year.
