Google Translate commercial: over 100 billion words translated every day

google-translate-100-billion

Google’s “be together, not the same” campaign goes far beyond customization and a diverse crowd of devices. They extend this slogan to all their other services, and we simply can’t forget about Google Translate. It literally breaks one of the biggest barriers known to man – language.

The Search Giant has just released one of the most emotional Google Translate commercials we have seen, displaying how much this application has changed the way we communicate with others. They claim over 100 billion words are translated a day, with the most popular phrases being “how are you?”, “thank you” and “I love you”.

It’s a very sweet way to tell us that we have to look past the words that may hurt and divide us, and really focus on what an app like this can accomplish. It literally does bring people together. And it does so in a way that is very impressive.

Google Translate is among the most well-developed and full-featured translating apps around (arguably the best). Features like picture translation, offline support, handwriting support, and automatic voice translation are really outstanding. It’s literally like having a live translator, as it can speak out translated text.

google translate

My favorite feature is definitely Word Lens, which allows users to point at any real-life text with the camera and get a direct translation. The translated text will literally show up in your screen, live! It’s truly insane.

I know many of us rarely find a chance to really take advantage of Google Translate, save for those who travel often. I can say it has been a life-saver the few times I have taken advantage of it, though. It doesn’t surprise me to hear it is used so much.

How often do you guys use Google Translate? Is it an important part of your life? Let us know in the comments section. Those who still haven’t downloaded the app can do so by clicking through this link.

Acer Chromebase all-in-one offers solid specs, low price and touch options

AIO_DC-benefitwow-images-01

Acer continues pushing forward in the Chrome OS market, with their latest addition truly being a first of a kind. The computer manufacturer announced the Acer Chromebase all-in-one (otherwise known as the DC221HQ) in April, but we were left with many doubts then. Today we are getting all the details, including pricing and availability, which is what we really wanted to know.

It is actually one hell of a Chrome OS computer, so let’s dive right into the details and show you what this gadget is all about.

acer-chromebase-1Acer Chromebase all-in-one specs

  • Chrome OS
  • 21.5-inch 1080p display
  • NVIDIA Tegra K1 quad-core processor
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 16 GB of internal storage
  • 2 x 3W audio speakers
  • HDMI out, USB 3.0, USB 2.0.
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0

It may not have an Intel Core i5 on board, but the NVIDIA Tegra K1 and Kepler graphics should handle Chrome OS pretty well. It is a super light-weight and fast platform, after all. The real kicker here is something that wasn’t mentioned in the specs above. This PC can be had with an optional touchscreen!

AIO_DC-benefitwow-images-02

We are still wondering if this is a form factor people really want, though. Is there really a demand for Chrome OS desktop computers, especially considering one could just dock any Chromebook to a monitor to get the larger screen experience. This is why Chromeboxes and Chromebases haven’t exactly grown at the same rate as Chromebooks.

Will the addition of a touchscreen change this computer’s fate? We can’t say for sure yet, but we did mention price would be a huge factor in this complex equation. To be honest, Acer did strike some rather awesome price points here.

The non-touch version will go for just $329.99, while the multi-touch iteration will cost $100 more at $429.99. Sadly, you can only get the non-touch version this month (June). You will have to wait until July if you want to really get your fingers all over this all-in-one’s screen.

Really – how many of these will sell? I could see them being great for education, libraries and the occasional casual user, but that’s about it. What we can tell you is that it’s definitely the best of its kind right now, so those looking for a solid Chromebase really should look no further.

Dropbox update v3.0 introduces Material Design for the masses

Dropbox

Dropbox is one hell of a service, but they haven’t been the best at keeping up with the times and adopting Material Design, which makes today’s news amazing for Google fans. The Dropbox Android app received an update with Material Design only some weeks ago, but it was exclusive to beta users. Today the company decides to take things to the next level and introduce Google’s design language to the masses.

The new update to the Dropbox app is labeled as version 3.0, and the change in design seems to be the only main improvement. This is one huge change, though. The interface looks much cleaner, and the navigation menu makes it much easier to roam around the application. Not to mention, it’s so much easier to find that floating action button, as opposed to looking all over the app just to upload a photo.

Dropbox’s latest update is currently rolling out to Google Play Store users. I still haven’t seen my update, but it should be coming soon. It took Dropbox way long to get on board with Material Design. It won’t really hurt to wait a bit more. I just find it impressive that we are still worrying about developers adopting Material Design, smack in the middle of 2015.

Have you gotten your update yet? How is it treating you? Hit the comments below to share your thoughts and experiences.

Google working on a way to help you not forget your valuables

Life can be tough.  One common occurrence is that we leave our home in a rush and the vulnerability to leaving something important behind gets the best of us.  Fortunately, Google is up to their clever-ways again, tinkering with ideas to help make our lives easier.

A newly filed patent by Google Inc. lets us glance at a capability in-work, where we will be able to pair our smartphones with valuable items we need in order to function, such as our wallet, keys, glasses, or even more important, coffee mug.

google_pairing_patent_2

The patent says that your smartphone will continually monitor the presence of said items and alert you if they go out of range and are not detectable anymore.  To achieve this, different short-range wireless technologies would be utilized, such as NFC, Bluetooth, RuBee, or RFID.  For instance, your phone could monitor your work laptop’s presence via Bluetooth.  For non-electronic items, you would place a RFID tag on each.

On the software end, you’ll be able to distinguish which communicator is which item and be able to specify at what distance apart to warn you, the type of warning to issue, and how often to check for the items.

This is definitely one of those capabilities we could foresee coming.  Of course, if you forget your phone, the whole concept falls apart.  Maybe your smartwatch could be a form of redundancy for this system?

Google News Lab: A way for journalists to collaborate

To the average user, it seems Google is all about services integration. Android is a great example of this. The platform integrates seamlessly with the Goog’s product ecosystem. For the consumer side of things, this has been the search giant’s bread and butter for the better part of a decade. The real money, however, is in the enterprise. There are a plethora of Google business services, and depending on who you talk to, none are quite as good as their competitor. Google apps for business is great, and in full disclosure this article is being written in Google Docs. Unfortunately, for companies that do business on a large scale, Microsoft Office has been king. Google Compute Engine is a marvel of modern computer science, but Amazon Web Services has been able to boast some of the industry’s biggest customers (think Netflix). Where Google has seen the most success, is when it has been able to couple the engineering part of its brain with truly innovative and exciting ideas. Google News is a great product that has been around for sometime, but there hasn’t been an urgent need to create an enterprise ready platform for journalists and other media outlets. The focus has been on the consumer.

Enter:  Google News Lab. The idea behind this new project is to allow Google to “…collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to help build the future of media.” The folks in Mountain view plan to do this by connecting the various Google services and applications directly with journalists and media outlets. The first of these is Youtube Newswire, a feed of aggregated content of the day’s news on the web’s #1 video site. With integration of reporting into other apps like Earth and Maps, Google is positioning itself to be the premier location for new media journalists.

Google’s News Lab helps journalists with their online reporting

A Syrian protest recorded by a citizen journalist

Google’s efforts to improve internet journalism are going far, far beyond a special YouTube feed. The search firm has officially launched the Google News Lab, an initiative that helps reporters collect and publish news online. The Lab shows journalists how to use Google tools like data visualizers, Maps and Trends. It’s also partnering with news outlets on data experiments, fostering media startups and supporting citizen journalism. Google hopes that all these tutorials and team-ups will adapt journalists to the direct, data-driven nature of internet reporting — and, no doubt, show that the company isn’t always at odds with publishers.

[Deal] Google’s Nexus Player only $68 through Amazon

Nexus Player – Google11

Amazon has Google’s Nexus Player on sale for $68, if you’re looking to get yourself set up with an Android TV.

Of course, there are much better options out there as far as Android TV set-top boxes go. For instance, the NVIDIA Shield TV and Forge TV are excellent solutions, but can be a lot pricier than what the Nexus Player is running for right now.

The Nexus Player usually runs at about $100, but at $68, you’re getting about a $32 discount, and that’s hard to pass up. If you’re looking to outfit your TV with Android on a budget, this is your best bet.
