Google and BlackBerry team up for a secure enterprise Android

Google 15th birthday

BlackBerry and Google are having a total peanut butter and chocolate moment here. The two companies have just announced that they’re teaming up to create a more enterprise-ready version of the Android OS. The deal will see the heightened security features of BES12, BlackBerry’s enterprise device deployment service, integrated into Android’s 5.0 Lolipop build and Google Play for Work.

This is a big win for both sides. Google gets a boost to its security ecosystem (not to mention access to a huge new swath of enterprise customers) and BlackBerry gets an Android-based tourniquet to tie off its cash hemorrhage. But enterprise users are the biggest winners of all. They’ll essentially get the same level of security that made BlackBerry the smartphone of choice for world leaders with the massive app library and ubiquitous functionality of the Android OS. What’s more, this lends additional credibility to rumors that we may soon see an Android-driven BlackBerry device.

Two reasons to download and install the latest Google Play Store 5.7.10 APK

The Google Play Store has just received a version bump, bringing it to version 5.7.10 and few minor changes, after only being updated a few days ago to version 5.7.6. You can probably guess by the small increase in version number that this one is a tiny update.

What’s New

– new circular animation on TV pages
– popular opinions review blurbs

Of course, there could be more undisclosed under the hood performance enhancements not immediately noticeable.

Why download it?

If like me you like to be on the cutting edge of developments, you can go ahead and grab the latest Google Play Store 5.7.10 APK from here. Running the latest version of the Google Play Store always ensures you have the latest features and experience the changes first-hand into new developments within the APK. Android M Developer Preview gets first update

Having promised monthly updates to Android M at the Google I/O 2015 conference earlier this year, the Developer Preview of the latest version of Android has received its first update.

Preview 2 includes the new platform code, some additional APIs for testing as well as a few developer reported fixes such as Camera Permission and TextInputLayout issues.

How to Get the Update

If you are already running the M developer preview launched at Google I/O (Build #MPZ44Q) on a supported Nexus device (e.g. Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, or Nexus Player), the update can be delivered to your device via an over-the-air update. It is expected that all devices currently on the developer preview will receive the update over the next few days.

There’s also a new version of the Android M Developer Preview posted here for any new fresh installs for devices.

Google indicates that Android M is still on schedule for a fall release and urges anyone on the Developer Preview to report critical issues as you continue to test and validate your apps on the M Developer Preview.

BlackBerry and Google team up to make Android more business-friendly

Blackberry_Android_062515

BlackBerry and Google have joined hands to make Android devices more secure and business-friendly. As part of their enterprise-focused partnership, the two companies will integrate BlackBerry’s BES12 enterprise device deployment service with Android 5.0 Lollipop’s latest security features.

BES12 that already supports Android has many device management features in addition to advanced data encryption and application wrapping features. Now, the company is going to integrate Google Play for Work, which will increase security and smoothly deploy enterprise-related apps on Android devices.

“New features are now available through Android and BES12 that enable organizations to further secure enterprise and personal data on Android devices, set new levels of hardware based encryption, and ensure tight integration with Google Play™ for Work, for increased application management, while delivering a consistent end-user and management experience across their Android fleet,” a post announcing BlackBerry’s partnership with Google read.

Now that the two companies have decided to work together, the probability of BlackBerry launching an Android-powered device (something we all want to see) certainly goes up.

Project Fi’s Nexus 6 will get Android 5.1.1 soon

google_project_fi_banner

The official Twitter account for Project Fi gave an update on the status of Android 5.1.1 for its Nexus 6. There, it was specified that owners of the Nexus 6 with Google’s wireless service can expect to see the software update arrive “over the next few days.”

Don’t have an invite just yet? The wait is almost over. All invites are said to be sent out by mid-summer and Project Fi currently allows you to check the status of your own invite. For me, I was told about ten days ago that my wait was 3-4 weeks but received it earlier this week. So it looks like Google has been able to get invites pushed out at an increased pace.

Google patent uses finger frames to snap pics with Glass-like devices

If you thought wearing a Google Glass headset was awkward, things could get even weirder. The Mountain View company was awarded a patent this week for tech that enables a Glass-like head-mounted display to automatically take pictures when it recognizes your fingers. Specifically, it snaps a pic when you make one of those finger frames like you’ve seen movie directors use. The patent document also explains that the device can change the orientation of the image based on the positioning of your hands. For example, if you made a circular “O” shape with one hand, you’d end up with a round picture. And the same goes for using two hands to frame a rectangular portrait.

Based on the area that you point out, the device is also capable of making any additional cropping, white balance and exposure adjustments. As is the case with documents like this, there’s no guarantee that the tech will end up in a new version of Glass or any other device. However, reports indicate that Google is hard a work on a new model, so perhaps we’ll find out soon enough how much you’ll need to employ your arms to document your next vacation.

Blackberry and Google form new enterprise-focused partnership

BlackBerry Logo

Shutterstock

We’ve heard a ton of whispers as of late regarding BlackBerry’s potential foray into the Android world, and it seems as though these rumors are picking up steam. Just last week popular leaker @evleaks posted a photo online of what’s supposedly dubbed the BlackBerry Venice – an AT&T-bound Android device with a slide-out keyboard. Concrete details have yet to surface when it comes to the rumored Venice handset. However, we’ve just gotten word of a new partnership that may lead to further credence that BlackBerry’s rumored Android handset may actually come in to fruition.

On Tuesday, July 7th, BlackBerry Limited (formerly RIM) registered for two different domain names: AndroidSecured.com and AndroidSecured.net. Navigating to the .net domain results in an error, but if you head to AndroidSecured.com, it redirects you to a curious page announcing a new partnership between BlackBerry and Google.

BlackBerry Google BES12 partnership Android Authority

The website features a header that reads “Bring Android to work”, along with some information showcasing the security features of Android Lollipop and the newly-updated BES12 platform. Additionally, the website explains:

BlackBerry and Google are working closely together to set new standards in enterprise mobile security for organizations deploying Android devices.

BES12’s update to 12.2 brings a number of notable features including the ability to manage devices using Samsung KNOX, as well as Android for Work integration that will offer enhanced security and simplified management options. The website goes in to more detail explaining new features that Android and BES12 can offer enterprise customers and that a 60-day free trial of BES12 is also available for interested customers.

Read more: 4 ways BlackBerry can be unique on Android

Although the slew of new security features being offered in BES12 are quite interesting, that’s not the most important thing here. We now know that BlackBerry and Google are working closely together on the enterprise front for organizations that would like to deploy Android devices to their employees. No, this doesn’t confirm nor deny the existence of an Android-powered BlackBerry device. But with a new partnership formed by the two companies and with Android Lollipop being showcased on the website’s forefront, this might be our first real evidence that we could see a BlackBerry-made device running Lollipop geared towards the enterprise.

After all, it’s clear that BlackBerry’s biggest selling points are its enterprise security features, and the company’s CEO even explained in an interview that BlackBerry is not opposed to building an Android device, as long as it’s secure. Perhaps the whole purpose behind the BlackBerry Venice is to showcase the security features BlackBerry has to offer, while also giving enterprise customers a more attractive OS and access to Google Play Services. BlackBerry doesn’t need to build an Android device to showcase what its hardware can do – the software is what matters, and that’s likely what we’re witnessing here.

Like I said previously, nothing is confirmed at this moment regarding the Venice. But this new partnership might be our first glimpse into what’s to come from the two companies. What are your thoughts? Do you have any speculation concerning this new partnership? Or do you think nothing will come of it? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Nexus 9 16GB drops to just £200 in the UK

Nexus-9-33

If you’re after an Android tablet in the UK but haven’t been sure what to buy, a new price for the Google Nexus 9 might just have made your mind up for you. Both Amazon and UK retailer Argos have dropped the price of the HTC-made tablet to just £200 and £199.99 respectively in the UK for the 16GB Wi-Fi version.

If you need more storage and/or on-the-go connectivity, sadly neither retailer has dropped the price of the 32GB or LTE models which means they still retail for £299.99 and £459 respectively. The new price for the Nexus 9 represents a full saving off £119 off its retail price and makes the tablet a bargain given its considerable specs list.

To recap, the Nexus 9 boasts a 8.9-inch display with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution that offers 281 pixels per inch density and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Google’s flagship tablet is powered by a dual-core Nvidia Tegra K1 processor clocked at 2.3GHz with 2GB RAM, an 8MP rear camera that supports full HD video and a 1.2MP front facing camera with 720p HD video. Other notable specs include Bluetooth v4.1 with apt-X, NFC, dual-band WI-Fi and a non-removable 6700 mAh battery. Of course, the Nexus 9 comes running stock Android and will be getting the upcoming Android M update.

Google’s Nexus 9 tablet slashed to £200 in the UK

Nexus 9

If you’d had your eye on a new Nexus device but missed out on the recent round of smartphone sales, today’s new Google tablet deal might be of interest. Just days after the Nexus 6 price was slashed to £304 (normally £479), the WiFi Nexus 9 is enjoying similar treatment, with the 16GB model now setting you back £200 instead of the usual £319. Amazon and Argos are both hosting the deal, which also includes a £100 discount on the 32GB model, but Google has not reflected the price change on its own store.

Motorola and Google have teased sales in recent months, suggesting that both companies are managing stock levels ahead of a likely Nexus hardware refresh in the coming months. Google bucked from tradition with the launch of the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 by removing the huge subsidies that earlier flagship devices had enjoyed, which is probably why we’re seeing bigger discounts now we’re enjoying summer. Given that Google has not mirrored the price change, we can only presume that today’s deals are time-limited or are in place until the allotted stock runs out. That means you’ll likely have to move quickly if you’re wanting to grab HTC’s first Nexus tablet while it’s affordable.
