Android M Developer Preview 2 fixes snoozing alarm clock bug
The original Android M Developer Preview had an ugly bug with its alarm clock that would sometimes cause the snooze button to delay your alarm by a full 24 hours instead of a few minutes. Needless to say, that’s a pretty serious problem that could screw up someone’s entire day. You probably shouldn’t be trusting beta software to wake you up for your job every day, but somebody has to test these things before they go live for everyone else, right?
In the latest Android M Preview, it looks like Google has patched that issue up, which should prevent anymore oversleeping accidents for those of you testing out Android M. Or if you do oversleep, you just won’t be able to blame it on your phone anymore. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
One bug squashed, one step closer to an official Android M release.

Android gets Google Maps desktop-to-mobile destination info, too
The latest update to Google Maps on Android is one of those things that honestly should have happened a long time ago, but surprisingly didn’t until recently: Now you can send destination info directly to your mobile device from the desktop. Just like on iOS. And as Android Police points out, it all sounds pretty facile. So long as you have the latest version of the mobile app installed, from the Maps website you should see an option to send the current query to devices you’re signed into with your Google account. From there, an actionable notification pops on your gizmo and you can either check out the destination’s website (if there is one) or its profile card on Google. Like I said, it’s pretty simple and something you’d have thought was already there but actually wasn’t.

Watch a TV documentary about YouTube at 10PM Eastern
YouTube may be one of the big reasons to ditch conventional TV, but that isn’t stopping the National Geographic Channel from putting YouTube on TV. The network is airing Generation YouTube, a documentary on the origins and cultural impact of the streaming video site, on July 11th (tonight, if you’re reading this soon enough) at 10PM Eastern. As you can see in the teaser clip, the show underscores YouTube’s very humble beginnings — it was going to be an online dating site at one point, and it didn’t take off until it embraced that upload-what-you-want philosophy. If you’ve wondered how YouTube got to the point where it’s creating internet memes and supporting whole careers, you’ll probably want to tune in.

Send directions to device from desktop Google Maps
Google now has made it so a user of Google Maps on the desktop can send directions to his or her mobile device.
To do so:
- Go to Google Maps on your computer.
- Sign in to Google Maps with the same account on your computer and your mobile device.
- Search for a place.
- Click Send to device on the place card that pops up.
- Choose the device you want to send the information to.

There are two more things. Firstly, you can’t send a place to your mobile device if you’re using Maps in Lite Mode. In order to turn it off should you have it on, go to the desktop version of Maps and click the main menu in the top left. You will see an option to disable it. Lastly, make sure you have version 9.11.0 (the latest as of this post) or higher of the app.

Google adds path to send Google Maps directions from desktop to Android device
Google seems to be working on a lot of small refinements to their apps lately to help make their use that much easier. A new update for Google Maps on the desktop works with the latest Google Maps update for Android devices to do that by easing the process of sharing directions you look up on the desktop to your Android device.
In the past, users who looked up a location on the desktop would have to do a new search for the same place when launching the Google Maps app on their device. This was not too terribly complicated as the location would appear in the recent history listing. Still, this took some extra steps to get everything loaded up and ready for navigation or providing directions.
In this latest update, users will see they have a new link in the information card that shows on desktop maps “Send to device…” Selecting this opens a small dialog box where users can select which one of their devices to use.
On the receiving Android device, users get a notification listing the location that was sent. A couple options are available from the notification to either launch straight into navigation or view the directions. You can also tap on the location itself to pull up its information card in the Google Maps app.

Yet another source confirms that a Huawei Nexus is in the works

The number of sources that have confirmed that there is a Huawei Nexus smartphone happening has risen again with The Information‘s Amir Efrati posting confirmation that Huawei is working with Google to release a Nexus smartphone. While we were never really in doubt, it’s always good to get more confirmation from what is widely considered a reputable source. Unfortunately, that’s all that this report has to say – that the device exists – and no new tidbits were released.
To recap what we think we know about the Huawei Nexus, it’s been widely rumoured to be based on the upcoming Huawei Ascend Mate 8 which will make it a 5.7-inch device. While the Ascend Mate 8 is likely using quite a few homegrown parts, like the Kirin processor, the Huawei Nexus is expected to use more common (and arguably more powerful) parts like a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The partnership is likely to work wonders for both sides, with Huawei getting more recognition in Western markets and Google hopefully smoothing things over in the Chinese markets. A lot still has to happen between now and whenever this device eventually appears, but we’re confident it’s going to be a killer smartphone.

Google teaming up with Huawei for the new Nexus
We’ve heard numerous times before that various manufactures are in on the new Nexus and one of the most likely has been Huawei. This time, a new report has surfaced that once again puts Huawei behind the hardware for the next Nexus smartphone.
This comes courtesy of ‘The Information‘, which has been reliable in the past when it comes to source leaks, who say that Google will be teaming up with Huawei in a partnership that will benefit both companies.
The next Nexus device is expected to be a 5.7-inch Quad HD device, powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor, and could be only one of two Nexus devices that possibly would be offered in different sizes.
The ‘benefit both companies’ piece revolves around bringing the Chinese manufacturer into the US market and this will inturn help Google bring their Google Play Store to China, a place where it hasn’t had much luck.
In addition to the Huawei-made Nexus 5.7-inch device, LG are also reportedly in talks with Google to bring a smaller 5-inch device, similar to the profile of the Nexus 5, both of which will be running Android M and will be launched in parallel of the new operating system.

Huawei will be making the next Nexus
Chinese manufacture Huawei will be partnering with Google to make the next Nexus phone for this fall. This is not the first we have heard of this as last month IBT reported it was coming. It is also rumored that their will be two Nexus phones a 5.7-inch Huawei device and a 5.2-inch phone from LG.
This is a bold move by Google that could be very beneficial in many other ways too. There is talk that Huawei will help Google bring a mobile app store to China where they have very strict regulations to outsiders. Google is also said to help Huawei market any future devices in North America.
This could be a huge deal for Huawei as the Nexus phone is supposed to be exactly how Google wants to show off their operating system and it has a very strong following. If it goes well it could have a big impact on future sales of all their devices.

Google releases Ethernet adapter for the Chromecast in case your Wi-Fi is dodgy

The Chromecast has cemented itself as one of the must-haves for any self respecting Google/Android fan, however the fact that it requires a Wi-Fi connection means that people with dodgy Wi-Fi connections might not be able to utilize the streaming dongle to its full potential. Thankfully, Google has finally released an ethernet adapter for the Chromecast, meaning you’ll be able to connect a physical ethernet cable from your router to your Chromecast to cut out the middleman. The adapter will run you $15 USD, however while that seems like a small sum by itself, when you factor in that the Chromecast costs $35 USD on top of that, it makes the whole package a little less attractive relative to its competitors.
While the adapters when up on the Google Store this morning, unfortunately, they’ve already sold out. No doubt Google will replenish stock at some point in the future – we’ll let you know as soon as we know. And as all things new at Google go, the ethernet adapter is currently only available in the US, but we assume availability around the world will follow very soon. If you feel like staring at the product page until it’s back in stock, you can hit the link below:
