Google’s upcoming Nexus phone might look like this

We know another Nexus smartphone is coming soon, but built by whom? Both Huawei and LG are rumored to be making Google’s reference device for Android M, and we now have pretty solid evidence for LG. A picture of the device from an Indonesian G+ user spotted by blogger Marques Brownlee shows the back of an LG Nexus device. Size-wise, it appears to line up with the 5.2-inch rumors and also features a rear fingerprint scanner, bulging camera, laser focus, dual-LED, iPhone 6-style flash and plastic galore.

If the device is for real, all that plastic might not be a bad thing, as it could mean that Google’s next handset will be more affordable than its last one, the Motorola Nexus 6. A previous render from @Onleaks matches the photo closely, and also shows a USB Type-C port. Rounding out the specs, the device is supposed to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 CPU.

The Huawei device, on the other hand, is rumored to be a larger, 5.7-inch phablet with slightly more upmarket specs. We’d take all this with a ton of salt, but with Apple, Samsung and others now offering big and small handsets, two Nexus devices makes sense. As for when we’ll find out, we’d expect the devices to arrive at the same time as Android M, which is reportedly set to be released sometime in the fall.

Photos of an actual LG Nexus 5 2015 surface

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

And I thought this weekend was going to be a quiet one. With all the leaks surrounding the appearance of the LG Nexus 5 2015 in the past few weeks, it almost seemed inevitable that we were going to get a look at one in person, and it appears that now we can. A photo showing the back of the Nexus 5 2015 has appeared online and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it matches exactly what we were expecting based on previous renders and leaks of the Nexus 5 2015’s cases. Check out the image for yourself down below:

LG Nexus 5 2015Predictably, marked on the device are the words “not for sale” as well as the Nexus logo branded in the same location as the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 before it. Of course, we also see that the lipped camera from the earlier renders was spot on, and that there is a fingerprint scanner just below that. We’re inclined to believe that we are indeed looking at an actual LG Nexus 5 2015, unless of course it’s an elaborate 3D printing job – very elaborate.

This is one of the first times that we’ve ever seen a Nexus device prior to its release, and not instigated by Google. Then again, the timing is rather suspect seeing as Google started teasing the announcement of Android M’s official name last week. Let the hype begin.

What do you think about the LG Nexus 5 2015? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Move Loot reaches Android: easily buy, sell and discover furniture

MoveLoot

Trying to find a good way to trade your used furniture? Whether you are looking to buy or sell, one of the best solutions out there is Move Loot, a new application/service designed to take the weight off your shoulders and make selling or buying furniture a breeze.

Move Loot has been listening and they know many of you are interested in the service. Furthermore, they also know many of us Android enthusiasts wanted an app, and they have gone all out to create it. The Move Loot app is now available from the Google Play Store for both smartphones and tablets.

So what is this Move Loot craze all about? The concept is simple. You can either be a buyer or a seller. Looking for the right items to furnish your home? Search and discover by categories. Once you find the right products, simply purchase them and select a delivery date. The Move Loot will take care of the rest.

If you are trying to clear some space, you can also sell your used furniture. Simply create a submission and wait some time. If your furniture is approved, the team will come and pick it up. It’s that simple. After your item sells, you will get your money and the Move Loot team will keep a percentage.

The sad news is Move Loot is not exactly for everyone just yet. The service is only available in a handful of markets. These include San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte and Atlanta. If you reside in one of these areas, though, you can go straight to the Google Play Store and join the party.

Android Authority this week – August 16, 2015

samsung galaxy note 5 color comparison (2 of 22)

It’s been a wildly entertaining week in the world of Android. Google dropped the Alphabet bomb, prompting a flurry of speculation about the reasons behind this radical change. Samsung finally unveiled the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus, to mixed reactions. Details about Huawei’s next smartphones leaked out, while we gathered more info about LG’s upcoming Nexus. Qualcomm introduced new mid-level chips and detailed the high-end Snapdragon 820. Xiaomi introduced the Redmi 2 Prime and Redmi Note 2. And the OnePlus 2 went on sale (if you have an invite!)

And just like that, the Note 5 has arrived. Hopefully for Samsung, the market reception will be less frosty than the anticlimactic launch would suggest. Truth is, the Note series is no longer standing out in a market full of devices with large screens. Are the S Pen and the software tricks it enables enough to preserve the Note’s dominance? Over the next weeks, we’ll be putting the Note and the S6 Edge Plus through their paces to find out.

What about IFA, Samsung’s traditional stomping grounds? We’ve got a glimpse of the Gear S2 and we’re confident we’ll get to check it out in Berlin from September 1. Anything else? Is a new tablet coming? Overall, IFA may be a little interesting than usual this year – Sony, Huawei, and a few others will have product launches, but it just won’t be the same without a new Note.

If you’re going back to school soon, we’ve put together a great guide to help you gear up with the best gadgets for work and fun. Check it out here.

This week’s giveaway is the brand new Galaxy Note 5! Head over here for your chance to win Samsung’s hot new phone! Craving a OnePlus 2? We’re giving away 50 invites until August 19!

ICYMI: Google’s face-policing API, Rage Rooms and more

ICYMI: Google's Face-Policing API, Rage Rooms and More

Today on In Case You Missed It: Google’s new API for Android applications comes with face detection that can tell if you’re smiling or not. Then there’s the trend in Rage Rooms that looks like too much fun to keep to ourselves. And a hoax of an amazing prototype: A supposed adoption of Volkswagen technology birthed a stroller to follow you around, using collision sensors to avoid people or objects. This thing should really exist in some form, yes?

Next up, a lot happened in news this week, which we cover in rapid-fire fashion in TL;DR, yet we’re still most interested in Google’s decision to restructure into Alphabet.

If you come across any interesting videos, we’d love to see them. Just tweet us with the #ICYMI hashtag @engadget or @mskerryd.

Google teases Android M’s future moniker in new video

Android M has been in the Developer Preview stage ever since late May, but we are still left without the official name. This happened last year with the current version of Android, which is now Lollipop.

As we all know, Google gives their Android version number a coinciding dessert. Previously we have seen Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, and KitKat to name a few. Now that Android M is nearing its official release, which is expected some time this month, Google put out a video hinting at what the M could stand for.

So, if Google’s timeline stays correct, we are only a matter of days away from the official name behind the M. What are your thoughts on it? I personally think it’s going to be Marshmallow.

Google recruits Nat and Lo to help tease Android M with a musical video

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Google is pretty damn good at teasing, and in its latest campaign to tease Android M, they’ve recruited the help of Nat and Lo, a pair of Google fans/employees/fun-loving-geeks, to create a new musical video to do just that. The premise of the video is “what’s M gonna be?” and sees a whole lot of desserts and sweets that start with M listed – what’s most interesting about the video is right at the end, which shows the torso and abdomen of a new Android statue being painted. Check out the video for yourself:

The leading candidate on the Internet so far appears to be Marshmellow, based on the statue being painted white right at the end, but I’m convinced that’s just an undercoat – Google wouldn’t make it that obvious, would they? One thing that Google has made relatively obvious is that the version number of Android M is going to be Android 5.2, as depicted in the new demo mode in the Android M Developer Preview – or maybe that’s just a red herring. Whatever the case, the starting of teasing can only mean that an Android M release is coming pretty soon, so stay tuned for more of this.

What do you think the “M” in “Android M” is going to be? Let us know your pick in the comments below.

Report: Kaspersky developed malware to trip up competition

Kaspersky Sees Cyber-Criminals Robbing Banks to Filling Stations

Reuters reports that a pair of former employees have accused Moscow-based Kaspersky Labs of building malware to trick its competition into flagging and quarantining important, non-viral, files on customers’ computers. Basically the malware would inject malicious bits of code into important PC files — like, say, your printer’s .ini files — which would then be flagged as a false positive and quarantined or deleted.

What’s more, the order to create the malware behind it reportedly came from none other than Kaspersky Lab co-founder, Eugene Kaspersky, as retribution against the company’s smaller competitors. He felt that they had simply copied his antivirus system rather than make their own, akin to stealing, according to Reuters’ anonymous source. “It was decided to provide some problems” for the other companies, the source said. “It is not only damaging for a competing company but also damaging for users’ computers.”

Kaspersky Labs stringently denies the accusations. “Our company has never conducted any secret campaign to trick competitors into generating false positives to damage their market standing,” a Kaspersky rep told Reuters. “Such actions are unethical, dishonest and their legality is at least questionable.” However, the company’s actions back in 2010 would suggest that Kaspersky isn’t completely above such acts. In 2010, to protest what it saw as rival companies lifting its valuable virus databases wholesale from third party aggregators like Google’s VirusTotal, Kaspersky flagged 10 innocuous files as malicious. Within 10 days, more than a dozen rival security programs were quarantining those same files, sight unseen. While Kaspersky’s alleged actions would be reprehensible (if proven true), it’s not hard to see where they’re coming from.
