Nexus 6P to debut in four colors, report suggests

nexus_6P-leak

Google will launch the Huawei-made Nexus 6P smartphone in four colors, according to a new report from Android Police. Allegedly, the handset will come in black, white, silver, and, gold.

It’s not clear whether any of the colors are exclusive to a particular market or whether the LG Nexus 5X will get the same treatment. We’d hope that, since Google oversees the entire project, both Nexus phones are sold in the same options.

Google has a press event scheduled for September 29 in San Francisco where we expect to see the new Nexus models. Also on tap could be a new Chromecast device or two. We’ll be in attendance so be sure to check back for more coverage.

Google introduces new Brotli compression algorithm, offers a 26% improvement over other methods

google new logoGoogle has introduced a brand new compression algorithm for the internet that’s said to be about 26% better than anything else that’s currently available. Google already uses their own compression for certain photos in supported browsers, including the photos on the web version of the Play Store, so this isn’t the first time the search engine has dabbled in making the internet more efficient.

The new compression algorithm is called Brotli, which is German for “small bread.” Not only will it shrink the size of data on the internet, which is great for anyone monitoring their bandwidth usage, but it should theoretically be much more efficient for processors and batteries. That’s good news for your smartphone and laptop, especially if you browse the internet often throughout the day.

Google’s new openness with Wall Street paying off in early returns

Google_Logo_Headquarters_01

During the past three months, Google shares on the stock market have jumped about 15% while the broader Nasdaq Composite Index has sunk around 8%. One of the factors analysts point to as helping Google buck the overall trend are a series of new “Office Hours” briefings the company’s new CFO, Ruth Porat, has been holding with analysts. The sessions, which only last about 15-30 minutes, give Google an opportunity to provide additional insight into their business and more importantly, point to a new level of transparency for the company.

Ms. Porat joined Google this past May after working at Morgan Stanley. While the company itself ends up being more open, analysts point out that Mr. Porat in general has a more open personality than her predecessor. Already she shared more in her first conference call back in July than what has been the norm and she has met with shareholders in New York, Boston and London. The new briefings are called “Office Hours” and are one more tool that Ms. Porat brings to the table for Google. Mark Mahaney, and analyst with RBC Capital Markets notes that, “the company has made more effort with investors in just the last couple of months than they have in years.”

Ms. Porat does have to walk a fine line during the “Office Hours” sessions as communications like these have the potential to cross SEC regulations. Companies are not allowed to selectively disclose nonpublic information that is material in nature to analysts or market professionals. This means Ms. Porat is limited to repeating or clarifying information that was already publicly released.

Free music: Google Play offers 20 free “Very Best of” collections

very best of

Spotify and other streaming services have put “owning” music out of fashion, but if you swear by keeping your own tune collection, there’s a very nice offering in the Play Store just for you.

Twenty of Google’s “The Very Best of” playlists are currently free in the Play Store, giving you the chance to stock up on the most popular tracks from artists including Nas, 311, Britney Spears, Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley, Ciara, Johnny Cash and more.

Each playlist contains 14 tracks, and each one normally costs $0.99 or more to buy individually. Other “The Very Best of” playlists sell for $6.99 to $7.99 a pop, so you’re looking at potential savings of more than $100.

We don’t know how long this discount will last or whether other collections will be made free at some point, so better hurry. Head over to the Play Store to check out the offer.

Europe wants to keep its citizens personal data out of the US

HILVERSUM, NETHERLANDS - APRIL 03, 2014: Social media are trending and both business as consumer are using it for information sh

Over the pond, there’s a rule preventing companies from moving a user’s personal data outside of Europe unless the receiving country has adequate data protection laws. In practice, this means that a company like Twitter can push stored information on a British user to a server in San Francisco, and vice-versa, and plenty of it happens on a regular basis. Now, however, one of the continent’s highest legal minds wants to put a stop to it, or at least make sure that it’s better regulated. Yves Bot is an Advocate General to the European Court of Justice, and has written a paper saying that America’s cavalier attitude to data is dangerous, and should be stopped.

The story begins with Max Schrems, a privacy campaigner who wanted the EU to examine Facebook’s policy of moving information from its Irish data center to the US. In the aftermath of the Snowden leaks, it was felt that the CIA and NSA had free and easy access to stuff it shouldn’t have, like our nude selfies. He took the case to Ireland, who batted it away, effectively, by saying that America is its friend and a friend wouldn’t be so uncool and he should just chill out, bro. That wasn’t enough for Schrems, who took the decision to the European Court in the hope that it would find the decision invalid. Bot agrees, saying that all EU countries should pay a lot more attention to protecting the data of its citizens.

As of right now, Bot’s opinion doesn’t mean too much, since these documents aren’t binding to any decisions that the court makes. On the other hand, they’re frequently indicative of how the court is thinking when it comes to make a final ruling on this issue in the future. If Bot turns out to be right, then the EU will force companies like Facebook, Google and Microsoft to keep citizens data on this side of the Atlantic. That could mean that Europeans are less likely to get access to exciting new features, but on the other hand, can relax knowing that the NSA isn’t staring at pictures of our junk.

Amazon India prematurely confirms Nexus 5X name, model number and 3 color options

Nexus_5_Nexus_Logo_TA

Just a few days shy of the official announcement from Google on September 29th and we have a premature listing from Amazon India for LG’s Nexus 5X 16GB. This latest leak comes soon after the discovery of the retail packaging for both the Nexus 5X and Huawei’s Nexus 6P.

LG_Nexus_5X_LG_H791_16GB

As you can see from the image above, the list of specifications mostly confirms earlier leaks as well as the model number: LG-H791. LG again eschews the Snapdragon 810 in favour of the hexa-core Snapdragon 808. According to the listing, this 16GB variant carries 2GB of RAM, which doesn’t quite mesh with earlier leaks saying the Nexus 5X sports 3GB of RAM. It’s important to remember that LG have previously produced handsets that carry different quantities of RAM depending on how much internal storage is present. For example, the LG G3 was produced in a 2GB/16GB version as well as a 3GB/32GB variant. So it’s quite possible that LG has done the same with the Nexus 5X.

Because the Nexus 5X has a 5.2-inch display, it’s naturally a little larger than the original Nexus 5. The listing shows the soon-to-be-announced Nexus 5x to be 15.4 x 7.6 x 1cm, whereas the original Nexus 5 is 13.7 x 6.9 x 0.86cm. The Nexus 5X also seems to be around 40 grams heavier, coming in at 170 grams, which is only 6 grams lighter than the Note 4.

The Nexus 5X will be available (in India, at least) in the following colours – Quartz White, Charcoal Black, as well as Ice Blue. The listing didn’t include product images, unfortunately, and all three listings have been taken down now. There was no mention of the ‘Tennis Court Mint ‘ option that was previously leaked.

With less than a week to go, how is LG’s Nexus 5X shaping up for you? If you skipped last year’s mammoth Nexus 6, will you be upgrading to LG’s Nexus 5X or Huawei’s 6P? Let us know in the comments below.

Amazon India leaks full details of the LG Nexus 5X

It looks like someone at Amazon India is a little trigger happy. Three pages detailing all of the details for the new Nexus from LG went live this morning and with it came some interesting information. Hot on the heels of the pictures of the Nexus 6P and the packaging for both Nexus devices, it seems we’re getting full confirmed specs for the LG Nexus 5X.

It appears we’ll be getting the Nexus 5X in 3 colors, Ice Blue, Quartz White and Charcoal Black. Also, it looks like anyone hoping to see 3 GB of RAM or more than 32 GB of storage is going to be disappointed. The listing indicates that the Nexus 5X will only have 2 GB of RAM and be offered in 16 and 32 GB variants.

Here are the full details of the listing. You can still check out the pages for the Ice Blue, Quartz White and Charcoal Black Nexus 5X pages but if they go down, you can catch a mirror of each here: Ice Blue, Quartz White, Charcoal Black. Looking at the seller’s listing, a midnight blue, 32GB, unlocked Nexus 6 for $299 is a bargain, when you consider the handset cost upwards of $500 when it launched last year. Yes, Google is about to unveil two new Nexus devices – the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P – but the Nexus 6 is certainly an impressive feature-rich smartphone and should be one of the first to get the new Android M operating system.

It’s worth noting that the seller specifically mentions this is the US variant of the handset and comes with both, GSM and CDMA radios. On paper, the handset supports all the LTE bands used by Verizon and Sprint but the seller specifically says this handset won’t work with those two networks.

There used to be an issue connecting your own devices to Verizon and Sprint’s CDMA networks but this has apparently been fixed; the seller specifically mentions the lack of support for these networks, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re thinking of buying this Nexus 6.

Interested to get this absolute bargain? Head over to eBay at the link below before the deal runs out!

Amazon India lists Nexus 5X, confirms storage, processor, color options and more

lg nexus 5x 2015 mint (3)

Google and its manufacturing partners seem unable (or unwilling) to contain the stream of leaks preceding the launch of Nexus devices. The Nexus 5X is the latest example, and today, we have more details to add to an already good picture.

Amazon India published product pages for the LG-made Nexus 5X in three color variants: Charcoal Black, Quartz White, and Ice Blue (confirming our recent exclusive report and a leak out of South Korea showing the blue version).

nexus 5x specs amazon

The listings are still available through direct links at the time of this writing, though it’s likely they will be removed soon.

The listings confirm some specs that have been rumored before, including the storage options. It looks like the Nexus 5X will indeed only be available in 16GB and 32GB, a decision by Google that has already created a wave of negative commentary. Is 16GB still enough in 2015, on a device without expandable storage? Perhaps in California, where people have generous data allowances, but how about the rest of the world?

The Nexus 5X will feature a 5.2-inch Full HD display, a 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 MSM8992  processor, 2GB of RAM, a 2700 mAh battery, a 12.3 MP main camera, and a 5 MP front camera. These are all specs listed in the three listings, and they seem very credible at this point. The Nexus 5X will be a rather heavy 177 grams at dimensions of 15.4 x 1 x 7.6 cm.

No price is given in the listing and the launch date is listed as September 29, when Google is scheduled to hold an event.

While these listing look pretty credible, there’s a chance they are inaccurate. But they do mesh in with many other reports. Let us know your thoughts!

Developers can now stop their Chrome extensions from working in Incognito mode

Chromebook-Pixel-1

Most times we see no extensions working in Chrome’s incognito mode, but this is only because Google turns them all off by default. Jump into the extension settings and you will find the vast majority of these have a check box to “allow in incognito”. Now, just because you have the option to, it doesn’t mean you should allow all your additional Chrome software to run in the private browser, though.

Google recognizes this, so they are introducing the ability for extension makers to deny access to incognito. So far it is only an experimental feature and it is working in Canary, but we can assume it will likely make its way to the stable version of Chrome in due time.

All developers have to do is set the manifest “incognito” field value to “not_allowed”. This would get rid of the “Allow in incognito” option withing the extension settings.

incognito-extension-chrome-canary

For those who may not know what Chrome Canary is, it’s pretty much the beta to Chrome Beta. The name comes from an old practice in which miners would bring a canary to their working grounds, where there could potentially be poisonous gases. If there was any danger, the canary would die before the miners, serving as a form of alarm. In the same way, Chrome Canary is the testing ground that all bleeding edge features go through when they are to new to put in the stable or even beta channels. It’s a very experimental build, and you should only use it if you want to experiment with new features.
