Droid Turbo 2 is the Moto X Pure on Verizon’s steroids

It’s a little hard to believe Verizon’s Droid line is six years old, and the family just keeps growing. Today, the carrier and its hardware partner Motorola pulled back the curtain on the Droid Turbo 2, a new flagship that doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. If you liked the Moto X Style/Pure, you just might be a little jealous of all the extra stuff its Verizon-only cousin just got.

Some Nexus 5X devices have a display malfunction, Google will happily replace it

nexus_5x_back_TAA new post on Reddit states that some Nexus owners are experiencing a yellow hue on their display. 6P owners have nothing to worry about, this seems to only be an issue with the 5X. However, good news is Google will willingly replace it if you have the issue.

If you’re experiencing a yellow tinted overlay on your Nexus 5X, you may want to contact Google’s customer service team as soon as possible. Not all Nexus 5X devices have the issue, but many do. The problem may be hard to notice at first, but when put next to a smartphone without the associated issue, you’ll immediately notice the difference. So if you have a Nexus 5X, put up something white and check for the hue. Some have been able to shake off the hue over time, but it’s strongly recommended to get a replacement from Google.

Is Google working on its own processors?

Google Logo

Historically, Google hasn’t been much of a hardware company, having relied on partnerships with OEMs to bring products like its Chromebooks and Nexus smartphones to market. That changed with the Chromebook Pixel and more recently with the Pixel C tablet, which was designed and manufactured by Google. That is, apart from one major part, the Tegra X1 processor, which was designed by Nvidia.

A new Google job listing for a “multimedia chip architect” suggests that Google may be planning to go all the way and design its own processors for future products as well. Interestingly, the listing was apparently posted by the Pixel division.

There are a number of reasons why Google might want to make a move into chip design. For starters, it would give the company greater control over the capacities and performance of its future products. Something which companies like Samsung and particularly Apple are quite keen on. While the Tegra X1 in the Pixel C packs in some serious graphics hardware and a popular big.LITTLE CPU design, perhaps Google may want more control over the CPU configuration or supported peripherals such as high resolution image sensors.

The Pixel C is designed by Google itself, but features an Nvidia Tegra X1 processor.

Furthermore, moving towards true end-to-end product design might help give Google’s brand a bit of a boost. There’s no denying that Apple’s work on every part of its product design works wonders for creating a premium brand image, and Google may be looking at a similar approach if it wants to make inroads into premium product segments. Especially given that Nexus products don’t always end up with the finest build quality.

“With the trend towards vertical integration, especially at Microsoft and Apple, it wouldn’t surprise me if Google developed their own chips, especially for Android productivity tablets to compete with the Surface Pro and iPad Pro.” – chip analyst Jim McGregor

Before we get too ahead of ourselves through, the key wording in the listing is a “multimedia chip”, which could mean a number of things. While Google may fancy joining the mobile SoC game, this would be a long and hugely expensive undertaking, which probably isn’t worth the limited number of products and sales. Instead, the tech giant may be looking into designing its own co-processors that sit alongside a main SoC designed by someone else, to gives its products an advantage over the competition.

The job listing specifically mentions “image processing, video processing, stabilization.” Given that higher-quality camera processing and high resolution video recording/playback are now major features in a range of mobile products, Google could be looking at using its own image or video processors rather than relying on third party chips.

Google stays out of hardware with the Nexus range, but could that change eventually?

Image and video processing is also a hugely important part of Google’s Project Tango tablet, and a hardware refresh might require some dedicated and more specialized hardware to realize Google’s vision. Alternatively, a low power, low cost, specialized multimedia processor for products like Google’s Chromecast could also make sense. Unfortunately, Google declined to comment on the job listing or any processor plans, leaving us in the dark.

All of that being said, product development often requires advanced knowledge of chip design anyway, in order to test and optimize products. The job posting alone does not mean that Google is planning to build its own chips, but there are some pretty good reasons why the company may want to do so.

Google increases price limits for apps in the Play Store

alcatel-onetouch-idol-3-4.7-google-play-store-ta

For the past three years, the maximum amount a developer could charge for applications or in-app purchases on the Play Store has equated to a total of $200 (USD). However, last night Google updated its official Developer Support page with a new ceiling price limit, which now enables developers to charge as much as $400 (USD) for their offerings.

Here is a list of the new prices:

  • United States – previous limit $200, current limit $400
  • Canada – previous limit $210, current limit $500
  • United Kingdom – previous limit £150, current limit £300
  • Most Euro currency countries – previous limit €199, current limit €350
  • Mexico – previous limit MXN 2,500, current limit MXN 7,500
  • Australia – previous limit $200, current limit $550
  • India – previous limit INR 16,000, current limit INR 26,000
  • Indonesia – previous limit IDR 2,200,000, current limit 5,500,500
  • Brazil – previous limit BRL 500, current limit BRL 1,500

While it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll open up the Play Store tomorrow and find an app retailing for $400, it’s possible that developers will update their applications with new in-app purchases that reach the extended limits.

Inspirational: Senior wish organization gives 97 year old Olive Horrell her dream, to tour Google and see the tech magic

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

This might not factor into the Android arena, but it is certainly a great story that I cam across on Cnet this evening. It involves a 97 year old woman by the name of Olive Horrell. She grew up through the technological changes that only someone her age could have appreciation for. She saw the birth of the Microwave, Jet airplanes, Video Games, Computers, GPS, Apple, Android and more things than I can even name in a single sitting.

Her lifelong dream was to become an engineer and be part of it all, but in a time when that was not the thing to do as a woman, she was forced to step back and just watch. Now, at 97 and living in an assisted living home, she uses her MacBook to send emails and longed for a chance to go to Google headquarters in Mountain View California. As she put it, it is the “epitome of all that wonderful tech stuff that comes out.” Her wish was granted thanks to the assisted living community of Brookdale and the Wish of a Lifetime organization, Olive got her wish and received a VIP tour of the complex that many of us wish to even drive past.

Google took her into the self driving cars, virtual reality and explained the cloud, to some degree. Take a watch of the video. It is such an amazing experience to see, and I have to agree with her final observation, everyone does spend  a little too much time living life through their smartphones and not enough time living life.

I can only imagine what it would be like to take my Grandma to Google for the day. She would be amazed, lost, confused and probably quite comical.

Google turns to new RankBrain AI to improve search results

Google_logo_474844

Although Google has expanded to so many areas over the years that a larger, parent company Alphabet had to be created to handle things, at its core Google is still a search company. As important as search is to the company, Google is turning to artificial intelligence solutions to help in maintain a competitive edge. The use of AI inspired machine learning is not new to Google which is actually one of the largest investors in AI research, using it in products from videos to speech to translation. Now a new system called RankBrain is being tested with search functions.

Google has been testing RankBrain for several months now by letting it try to interpret a “very large fraction” of the millions of queries the search giant processes. One of the primary types of search that RankBrain is used for are the 15 percent of queries that Google’s systems have never encountered before. These are ambiguous for existing algorithms and may include unique words or phrases that require some interpretation. RankBrain is able to process this input and make a guess at meanings.

Even though RankBrain is new to the search scene for Google, it has already risen to become the third highest contributing tool in determining the results displayed on a Google search page. The faster than expected effectiveness of RankBrain was described as “having gone better than we would have expected” according to Google senior research scientist Greg Corrado.

A sign of how important AI is to Google’s future efforts can be detected by looking back at Sundar Pichai’s comments during the company’s recent earnings call. Pichai noted that “machine learning is a core transformative way by which we are rethinking everything we are doing.” Alphabet’s Eric Schmidt wrote a piece last month extolling artificial intelligence solutions and how they will make the world better.

Even as Google brings the power of AI to bear on their core search business, other companies are expanding their use of machine learning as well. Both Microsoft and Facebook are actively working on deploying these systems to help power their businesses.

BlackBerry Priv apps show up at Play Store ahead of phone launch

blackberry-priv-hands-on-1

I can already feel the buttons tapping and clicking below my finger tips. The BlackBerry Priv is now up for pre-order and we are expecting a November 6th release date, which is less than a couple weeks away. Many of us are excited about this phone, so it’s always good to see the company revealing new details. BlackBerry is getting ready for this epic launch and couldn’t wait to upload multiple stock apps to the Google Play Store.

This happens to be great news, as it suggests BlackBerry is following the right steps to become a successful Android smartphone manufacturer. Putting all your stock apps in the Google Play Store means you no longer have to wait for whole firmware updates just to get tiny application updates. The manufacturer can simply have them updated via the Play Store, something plenty of the larger manufacturers have adopted.

That’s really the only good news about this, though. Obviously, you can’t really download these apps into any other smartphone out there right now. All you can do is take a look at them. Those who want to do that can do so by clicking through the links below.

BlackBerry Priv apps:

Just in case you have been living under a rock the past months, the Priv is BlackBerry’s first Android device. Yes, it will feature one of those acclaimed BlackBerry physical keyboards. But that is not the only enticing part; the phone happens to be very promising in plenty of other aspects.

Packed inside you will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, an 18 MP rear-facing camera, a 2 MP front shooter and a hefty 3410 mAh battery.

Not bad, right? Are any of you signing up to buy one of these? Hopefully we get to play with all these apps soon enough!

Walmart reportedly asks FAA for permission to fly drones

Wal-Mart Lowers Earnings Estimate After Weak Second Quarter

According to Reuters, Walmart has reportedly petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to test drones in a variety of tasks — from home delivery and curbside pickup operations to checking warehouse inventories. Walmart has apparently been testing these aerial platforms indoors for a number of months but needs the FAA’s blessing to begin operating in the great wide open.
