Select Nexus 6P units have broken microphones

nexus_6p_specs_labeled

The Nexus 6P is by no means a cheap phone. Google enlisted Huawei to make a premium device constructed of metal, but it seems that the Nexus 6P isn’t holding true to the $499 starting price. In October, rear panel glass was spontaneously shattering for some people. Quite bizarre, right? At least the most recent issue is very realistic and not nearly as random. The microphone’s functionality, according to multiple posts on the Google Product Forums, is posing a problem. There are owners of the Nexus 6P reporting that the phone’s microphone is not projecting their voice with strength or quality to people on the other end of a call.

Jamie Corbett, one of the Nexus 6P owners experiencing issues with his unit’s microphone, said the following in his post:

“While talking to my wife today she could barely hear me and said it sounded like I was very far away or muffled. This was while I had the headset to my ear like normal. If I put it on speaker, she said it would sound okay. I tried to find others with this issue and a similar issue, but couldn’t. Please help!”

Representatives on behalf of Google have only said that they are investigating the issue. One area that the company could be looking at is noise cancellation and the multiple microphones it takes to enable that. Apparently covering the microphone on the rear of the Nexus 6P alleviates the issue; however, others are discrediting that temporary solution and say it does nothing at all.

Let’s all just hope that Google can fix this through a software update instead of Huawei being forced to recall the Nexus 6P.

Marshmallow 6.0.1 already hitting Android One devices

Cherry Mobile G1

This device (Cherry Mobile Android G1) seems to be the first handset to get Android 6.0.1.

Now that Marshmallow (Android 6.0) has been available for several weeks, it’s not surprising to find that there is already a 6.0.1 update hitting some devices. In this particular case, said devices are select Android One handsets. According to reports, only a limited number of users have received the update so far, however. Have a look:

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

According to a Google Search, the model number listed, H220, is the Cherry Mobile Android G1 for the Philippines. Curiously the Android security patch level is dated December 1, 2015 despite today being only November 22, 2015. Assuming the roll-out isn’t a mistake, it would seem to imply that Google has already finalized the updated built into said patch despite this month having just over a week left.

There is currently no information as to what this 6.0.1 update brings with it, however the general assumption around the internet is that it’s strictly related to bug fixes and stability improvements.

PhoneArena has reported that, “HTC ROM developer @LlabTooFeR has it that, after 6.0.1, Google is planning to roll out Android 6.1 Marshmallow, though this is expected to happen starting next year.” Assuming this is true, it would raise the question as to if Google will release 6.0.1 to other devices (such as the Nexus series) of simply go directly to 6.1.

We will have more on this story as it develops, but for now let’s all keep our eyes peeled for any updates that may land in the next few weeks.

Teens have trouble telling between Google ads and search links

Google Holds Press Event Announcing New Products

You may have have a keen eye for that golden “ad” marker when you’re searching Google, but not everyone is so astute. UK watchdog Ofcom has posted a study showing that just 31 percent of kids aged 12 to 15 can tell the difference between a Google search ad and the real results just below them. They also tend to be overly trusting, as 19 percent of those young teens believe that all online results must be true. Not surprisingly, the figures get worse with younger children — just 16 percent of those aged 8 to 11 know whether they’re seeing an ad or a result.

T-Mobile’s Nexus 6 soon to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow

nexus-6-first-impressions-19-of-21

T-Mobile’s devices may not be the first to receive updates (nor are they the last), but at the very least they are good at keeping the process transparent to users. The Un-carrier has a website you can check to see how far into the updating procedure your specific device is. That is, if your phone is getting it.

Of course, Nexus users are among the first in the list, and today we are getting good news for owners of the Nexus 6. This super-sized smartphone will be getting the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update “soon”. The OTA upgrade has been approved, so it’s only a matter of a very short time before we start seeing some update notifications popping up.

Please do let us know if you happen to see the update hitting your own smartphone We can’t say how long it will take, but it’s usually a short wait after a software update is approved. Regardless, we are glad to finally see the Marshmallow update coming to the Google phone. We were supposed to see it last October, but the discovery of a major bug delayed the process.

Enjoy Android 6.0 Marshmallow!

The Marines start training Google’s 160-pound robo-dog Spot

Spot, the silent robo-dog made by Google-owned company Boston Dynamics, enjoyed the great outdoors for a week back in September. Not to fetch sticks or roll around in the grass, but to train… with the Marines. It’s gone a long way since its time stalking indoors, getting kicked by well-meaning engineers. The corps tested Spot’s ability to traverse terrains rougher than concrete floors, such as hills, woodlands and cities, controlling it from 500 meters away with a laptop and a video game controller. It was apparently so easy to pilot the quadruped, even a four-year-old could do it.

C is for Cloud? Google consolidating services, brings former VMWare exec on board

diane_greene

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced this week that the company is bringing VMWare co-founder and former CEO Diane Greene on board in a more active role to head up a new team focused on cloud businesses. Greene is already connected to Google as a member of the Board of Directors, but she will be moving into a more active and integral role with these changes.

Pichai says the new unit will combine Google for Work, Cloud Platform, and Google Apps. The idea is to bring product, engineering, marketing and sales expertise together to achieve better coordination for Google’s cloud offerings, especially those aimed at businesses.

Pichai and Google have identified cloud-based opportunities for future Google growth noting that only a fraction of business applications are in the cloud. Google already has a nice footprint in the market. Their Google for Work product is used by over 60% of Fortune 500 companies and Google has massive data center capacity. Google also has a variety of applications like Gmail, Docs and Chromebooks that can help a business transform to being more cloud-based.

As part of the move to expand Greene’s roll with Google in this new unit, Google is also acquiring a company founded by Greene called bebop, which provides a development platform for building and maintaining enterprise applications.

Get in shape with Google Fit

Software has come a long way in a short time, and our expectations are changing as we have access to incredibly well developed software. One of the best features to come with apps developed by Google is that they are free. Google offers free unlimited storage for high-resolution photos, document editors, maps, GPS, email and they even offer free software to help get you into shape.

That software is called Google Fit. Old habits die hard, as the number one New Years Resolution for 2015 was to get in shape, stay in shape and to lose weight. Many of us want to stay healthy for our children and family, want to look better and want to feel better. In order to do that we need to exercise and stay active.

Google is doing its part by offering free software to help us manage our health and to encourage us to exercise more. The excuses are running out when it comes to remembering to exercise, as fitness is just an app away.

Getting started with Google Fit

The first to-do item is to download the Google Fit app onto your Android smartphone by clicking here. If you don’t have a Google account, you need to create one in order to use the app. You can go to the Google sign-up page and get your free account which will keep track of your personal information.

Once the app is downloaded sign in with your account. Don’t worry if you don’t have an Android Wear device yet – you can simply carry your Android smartphone around with you to keep track of your activities. The Google Fit app will start tracking your activities instantly and will keep track of the data which can be viewed at https://www.google.com/fit/ when signed in.

google fit desktop

You can fill out profile information like your height, weight, and gender, and set a personal fitness goal. To see the distance you’ve gone and how many calories you’ve burned, you’ll need to fill out your height, weight, and gender. Once you’ve filled out your physical information, you’re on your way to getting and staying healthy. Check out what Google Fit can do for you. (Google Fit help)

Enter your physical information

  1. Open the Google Fit app .
  2. Touch Menu vertical menu> Settings.
  3. Enter your height, weight, and gender.

You can change which units Google Fit displays for weight, height, and distance. Touch Menu vertical menu> Settings> Units.

Set a personal fitness goal

You can track your progress towards activity goals using Google Fit.

You can set daily goals for:

  • Steps: How many steps you want to take.
  • Active time: How much time you want to spend being active.
  • Distance: The distance you want to walk, run, or bike.
  • Calories: The number of calories you want to burn.

You’ll have a default goal to be active for one hour a day when you first get started with Fit. The app will show you a progress update. After you’ve tracked your activity for a few days, you’ll also see recommendations for future goals.

IMG_20151120_231532

Change a personal fitness goal:

  1. Open the Google Fit app .
  2. Touch Menu vertical menu> Settings> Daily Goal.
  3. Touch the active goal.
  4. Enter your updated goal and touch Save.

What you can measure

When you record an activity, most of the time you can see estimates of:

  • Time: How long you did a specific activity.
  • Steps: How many steps you took.
  • Calories: How many calories you burned.
  • Distance: How far you walked or ran. This feature doesn’t work with stationary biking right now.
  • Weight: How your weight changes over time. You’ll have to enter your weight manually to track it.

Note: To see the distance you’ve gone or how many calories you’ve burned, you’ll need to fill out your height, weight, and gender.

For the most accurate biking detection, carry your phone in your pocket when you’re riding rather than mounted or in a backpack.

  2. Touch anywhere on the background of the screen. You’ll see a white screen with a red “g.”
