If you spot anything that we might have missed, drop us a note in the comments below and we’ll add it to our list as soon as possible. These deals are targeted at Brits mind you (US deals can be found here), so we’re avoiding anything that forces you to pay in a currency that isn’t Sterling.

Google Play Store Cyber Weekend deals will save you money on apps, games, movies and more!

google-play-store-cyber-monday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are no longer alone in the world of deals to come after we stuff our faces with turkey. Websites have been adopting what has come to be known as Cyber Weekend, extending online offers throughout the weekend (and sometimes even longer). Of course, Google is not staying behind!

The Search Giant has just announced its Google Play Store Cyber Week offers and there is plenty to be had here. The deals include discounts on apps, games, movies, TV shows, music, magazines and more! The selection is extensive, so it wouldn’t quite make sense to list it here, but we will give you a curated collection of our very favorite apps and content right below.

Games

Music

Movies

Books

TV Shows

Magazines

These are only some of our favorites, but you can click through the button below to get the complete list of deals coming from the Google Play Store. There’s plenty to be had and the deals are available right away, but act quickly, because the site doesn’t specify when the offers end. We do assume they’ll be around all weekend, though.

Are you getting any of these apps and content? I am definitely grabbing at least two of the Square Enix titles, which are being offered at a 50% discount. Other Square Enix fans will know these games are not cheap!

Check out the Google Play Store Cyber Weekend deals!

Software update for Nest Thermostats will make them even more energy efficient

Nest_Termostat_3rd_Gen_UK (4)

Nest is sending out an update to all of its thermostats that will allow them to make small changes in-order to keep your house at the ideal temperature. Nest says it has done this by creating even better algorithms that take into consideration things like weather, drafts, and your schedule.

Also, Nest says the update will allow the thermostats to maintain your home’s temperature up to 20% closer to the original temperature you have set. For example, if you have set the heat to 70ºF, Nest Thermostats will now be much more efficient at holding that temperature.

  • Nest Thermostats will now maintain the temperature in your home up to 20% closer to the temperature you’ve set.
  • Multi-stage heating systems can now save 3.8% more energy, heat pumps can save 6.5% more, and multi-stage cooling systems can save 5.4% more than they have before.
  • Time-to-Temperature, Early-On and Heat Pump Balance will get better.

Frequent updates is the real benefit to using a Nest Thermostat. Normally, you buy a thermostat and it just sits there for years and years. However, Nest will always be looking at ways to improve theirs, and send you updates once they do. This new update is said to be rolling out over the next couple of weeks.

New rumours suggests Google wants to help Samsung optimize TouchWiz

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Google and Samsung haven’t always seen eye-to-eye about how the Android platform should progress – usually it has been Google looking on like a disappointed parent as Samsung does it’s own thing. Infamous reports of this include Google pressuring Samsung to get rid of Magazine UX it had initially implemented on the Galaxy Note Pro and Tab Pro tablets, as well as Google getting all worked up about Samsung using Tizen in its wearables instead of Android Wear, and the always good story of Google telling Samsung to stop bloating its devices with apps. This time, reports are alleging that Google wants to help Samsung optimize TouchWiz, it’s user interface experience, presumably because while it is significantly better than previous iterations, it’s still not quite silky smooth.

We can’t confirm the validity of this report, but there are a few things to consider. First and foremost, why would Google only be getting involved now – Samsung is hardly at the height of its powers and the TouchWiz we have now isn’t all that bad, all things considered. Another interesting consideration is why Google would be taking an active role in helping Samsung as opposed to saying “Hey Samsung, be more like stock Android”.

While these are not questions we likely have answers to right now, it’s an interesting scenario to consider if true – what do you think about all of this? Let us know in the comments below.

You can now email Google Play credit gifts, but only in the US for now

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

For the longest time, the only way to give people the gift of Google Play credit was to buy them a physical Google Play gift card. Seeing as we’re in the 21st century, Google has now come up with a less physical version of this and has started rolling this out – and just in time for the Holiday season as well. Starting now, you’ll be able to buy Google Play credit gifts online, after which you’ll be prompted to email Google Play credit gifts to the person of your choosing – you’ll be able to do so in denominations of $10, $15, $20, $25, $50, or $100.

While this is a great new addition for people struggling to find presents for their loved ones, the only chink in the armour is that these new Google Play credit gifts are only available in the US right now. Presumably a global roll-out is going to occur at some point, but we doubt it will be in time for the Holidays anywhere else in the world. Note that to buy said credit gifts, you’ll have to buy them using your linked credit accounts, not any pre-existing Google Play credit you have.

What do we think about being about to email Google Play credit gifts? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Google scours 1.2 million URLs to conform with EU’s ‘right to be forgotten’

While still fighting it in the courts, Google has been complying with the EU’s ‘right to be forgotten‘ ruling. In a transparency report, the search giant stated that is has evaluated 1,234,092 URLs from 348,085 requests since May 29, 2014. Of those, 42 percent of the URLs have been removed from search results. When deciding which results stay and which get disappeared from results, it says, “Google must consider the rights of the individual as well as public interest in the content.” Unsurprising, the top site to have its search results scrubbed is Facebook.

Google Play credit can now be sent as a gift via email

Google Play Gift Cards Devices

In the United States only, with hopefully more countries to come, Android users can send Play credit gifts to others via email.

This is a new feature to Google Play and starts today. This gives all Android users the ability to send Google Play credit to someone via email in the form a gift. One can find the option on the sidebar of the Play Store Store where it reads “send gift.” Right now, Android users have the option to send either $10, $15, $20, $25, $50, or $100. Users are not limited to the amount of credits they can send.

Once you select the amount, you’ll have to supply an email address and include a message to send to the receiver. Unfortunately, users can’t pay with their Play Store balance and must select a valid credit/debit card on their Google account. You’ll also have the option to pay with Google Wallet. Google Play gifts is a great enhancement to Google Play and arrived in the neck of time, hopefully we’ll see more countries added in the weeks ahead.

Google updates ramp up of AMP

google_amp_article_sample

Back in October, Google announced the launch of a new initiative called the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) project. AMP is an effort to speed up the delivery of web content through an open framework. In an update posted this week, Google indicated they are on track to start sharing AMP pages via Google Search in early 2016. The AMP team also shared some information on the partners they are bringing on board and some of the challenges they are addressing.

In terms of publishers who are interested in developing content using AMP, Google says companies like the BBC, News Corp, and the Washington Post are all following development of AMP. In addition, companies like CBS Interactive, AOL and The Next Web have all committed to supporting the project. Google has also attracted the attention of the Local Media Consortium which represents 1,600 local newspapers and television stations.

Outside of content creators, Google attracted the attention of advertisers who are looking at how ads can be delivered within the AMP framework. In their announcement, Google indicates they have support from Outbrain, AOL, OpenX, DoubleClick and AdSense. Google is also working with companies like comScore, Nielsen, and even their own Google Analytics to ensure AMP articles are counted just like a regular web article. This will help publishers ensure their AMP content is meeting goals like their normal pages.

Google says they have over 4,500 developers following the project on the GitHub page. This includes over 250 pull requests and an active set of discussions regarding AMP and available features.
