Android Wear to support gestures and new Always On apps

Out of Google I/O 2015, Google has announced a few new features for Android Wear, including an Always On mode, gesture support, a new emoji recognizer and Launcher.
Android Wear is a rapidly growing platform, there are now 7 official watches in the market, with more than 4000 apps developed to make the most of your smartwatch.
Let’s look at those new features, starting with the Always On support. Always on is almost exactly what it says, allowing a new low power, black and white mode for many apps such as Maps navigation and Google Keep lists. Apps remain fully operational in color when you actively use them, but after a few seconds of non-use, the app jumps into the low power mode and keeps the directions or list items on screen.

Gesture support may be a sore spot for the new Aria Android Wear module that brings gesture support to your smartwatch. Android Wear itself will soon support flicking your wrist to scroll through your cards and more.
The new emoji recognizer allows users to hand draw not only your normal text characters through the keyboard, but now you can hand draw a martini glass, as in the Google I/O example, and it will match up your drawing to similar looking emoji on your keyboard.
Stay tuned for more coverage of Android Wear and features, as well as our ongoing coverage of Google I/O 2015.
HBO Now coming to the Google Play Store – from Google I/O 2015

One of the most popular television stations that have made it hard for would-be cord cutters to let go of their big cable bill is HBO. This may all change soon, with HBO Now coming to the Google Play Store, allowing you to enjoy your favorite HBO shows on your Android device or Chromecast.
We are fans of Game of Thrones around here, particularly with the ongoing seasons of the TellTale Games Game of Thrones series. Recently, Season 4 was released of the game, and we are now looking forward to catching season 5 and more of the television show on our Android tablets.

Hello and good morning to you all. I know we had some serious site issues yesterday that knocked us out entirely. Everything should be back up and running now. Currently I am sitting up in the Press Lounge at Google I/O happily waiting to make my way in for seating at the Keynote which starts at 9:30 a.m. PST. If you can hangout and catch the show, the video is below for you.
I usually do my best to get out as much concrete news and rumors leading up to I/O every year. This year I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend. I thought it would be worth while to steer clear of the chatter and come to the show and take it all in as it was being announced. While I couldn’t help but catch article titles leading to thoughts of a Chromecast 2, Android M and other expected announcements, I refused to open them and see what was being discussed. Which makes being here even more exciting as I have no expectations or preconceived notions as to what Google is doing today. So, book mark the page and be prepared for some amazing things to come.

Google to revive Google Wallet, launch Android Pay at I/O
In what is being seen as an attempt to revive its mobile payment system – Google Wallet, the search engine giant is set to unveil a new service called Android Pay at Google I/O. Expected to be launched today, Android Pay lets retailers accept card payment through mobile apps and tie customers in to loyalty programs.
According to reports, Apple is planning to tie merchants in to similar loyalty programs next month that let customers gather points and perks.
A lot of mobile apps and services have made peer-to-peer payment aspect quite popular, and Google is hoping to cash in on the trend by repackaging Google Wallet as Android Pay.
If you look at Google Wallet’s current features, it has peer-to-peer payment support, NFC payment support, loyalty/gift card wallet etc. So basically, everything that Android Pay is going to be. With help of Google’s marketing might, it will not be surprising to see Android Pay taking the Play Store by a storm in the near future.

Android M to be announced this year: Google engineer
While many of us are still waiting to get Android 5.0 Lollipop update on our devices, Google seems to be set to announce its latest operating system, Android M during I/O 2015.
In an interview with Fast Company, a Google software engineer confidently claimed that the search engine giant will announce the successor to Android 5.0 Lollipop later this year.
Without mentioning specific dates, Hiroshi Lockheimer also divulged that Google has adopted a yearly cadence of big releases. “For instance, one year we release J, the next year we release K, and then the year after that L, and then this year we’ll launch M, and so you can predict what will happen next year,” he said.
Going by that pattern, next year we will see Android N. If you think that yearly updates will become a routine and mar innovation, Lockheimer begs to differ.
“The trick is not to think about them in isolation… It’s really about thinking about these different screens, if you will, holistically. How do they work with each other? A watch, and a phone, and a TV, and a car, and a tablet, how can they coordinate, and how can they actually enrich our lives, and make things that were harder before more useful?,” he said.

Google VR to be shown off at Google I/O this week
With the Google I/O all set to kick off later this week, a few pointers about the company’s plans have leaked out. The company is seemingly holding a myriad of VR related events during the course of the 2-day event.
A new revelation suggests that Google could be pushing the virtual reality envelope further this year with Google VR expected to be shown off. This plan was in motion since last year’s I/O event where the company gave away attendees something known as Google Cardboard, which was a simple VR headset that anybody could make at home.
But things could be different this year with the company looking to take the platform further. This is not to say that Google will actually show off hardware this week, but merely that they could encourage OEMs to come forward and leverage Google’s VR platform.
We’ll know more about Google VR and its plans for the future over the course of the week.

Two Nexus phones in 2015, but no Nexus tablet according to rumor

As Google I/O draws near, just two days away now, the rumor and expectation mills are churning at full force. The latest expectation is that Google will bring two new Nexus phones to market this year, but no new tablet is on the immediate horizon.
These rumors sound fairly plausible, we have already heard that Huawei is building a Nexus phone, a 5.7-inch monster with code name Bullhead. I’ll leave you with the previous coverage for more details, but we expect to see the device later in the fall with the Snapdragon 810 SoC and a nice big 3,500mAh battery.

The new phone rumor is for another LG built Nexus device. Clocking in with a 5.2-inch display, the LG Angler looks like it may be fairly similar to the LG G4 with the Snapdragon 808 SoC. Speculation is early on this one though, specs are bound to change, and many components have not been chosen yet. With the general idea being that this LG phone is the proper successor to the Nexus 5, we do not expect top rung specs, just an overall solid experience.
Finally, do you like your Nexus 7 or Nexus 9? I hope so, since you may be stuck with it for another year before another Nexus tablet is introduced. We can always hope for a surprise, but at this point, there are no Nexus tablets in the rumor mill. Although the Nexus 7 has been removed from the Google Store, the Nexus 9 is still up for sale, offering you a solid Android tablet experience and the latest version of the Android OS (finally.)

I think I’ve mentioned this, these are purely rumor at this stage. We can’t help but send you over to Android Police where this new rumor of an LG Nexus phone comes from.
Stay tuned for more to come, we will be on the ground at Google I/O 2015, May 28-29, that’s Thursday and Friday in San Francisco. We hope you are as excited as we are to see the next chapters in the history of Nexus.
