The ‘Superbad’ and ‘This is the End’ team is adapting a book about the ’90s video game war

The duo behind This is the End is making a movie about the the ’90s battle between Nintendo and Sega. That’s right, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who also wrote and executive produced 2007′s Superbad) are adapting Blake Harris’ forthcoming account of the power struggle between the two gaming companies. At this point, details are otherwise scarce and Harris’ book doesn’t release until this May. We do know that Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle That Defined a Generation is comprised of some 200 interviews with former employees from each company, but that’s about it. Goldberg’s and Rogen’s past work leans toward the R-rated and comedic sides of things, so it could be interesting to see how their take on one of gaming’s more storied tussles plays out when it finally hits.

WWE Network wrestling is now streaming on virtually every device you own

WWE Network on Xbox 360

WWE promised that Americans would be watching body slams and piledrivers on a myriad of devices toward the end of this month, and that moment is finally at hand. WWE Network apps are now available in the US for almost every major platform under the sun, including Android, Apple TV, iOS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Roku players, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. In all cases, you’ll pay $10 per month to stream live wrestling events as well as beyond-the-ring content like documentaries and classic matches. The app also serves as a second screen companion when you’re watching live TV shows. International grappling fans will have to remain patient, however — WWE Network won’t reach other countries until late 2014 or early 2015.

Xbox One gets its first price drop, now £400 in the UK

Xbox One Titanfall bundle

The Xbox One hasn’t been selling as well as the PlayStation 4 on a global level, and that’s partly due to pricing — in the UK, Microsoft’s system costs a lofty £429 ($713) versus Sony’s £349 ($580). That gap is about to narrow, though, as Microsoft plans to cut the Xbox’s price to a slightly more reasonable £400 ($665) on February 28th. The company isn’t leaning solely on that lower price tag to attract gamers, either. It’s also releasing a special Titanfall Xbox One bundle (shown here) that includes both a download code for Respawn’s shooter and a month of Xbox Live Gold for the same price as the regular console. Americans can expect this limited edition system to ship alongside the game on March 11th, while Brits should get it on March 14th.

Amazon rival Newegg heading to the UK in March

One of the busiest online electronics stores in the US is about to open for business in Europe, including the UK. Newegg expects to start trading at the end of March, although we’re told it’ll be a relatively soft launch until the company feels more confident about its shipping and supply lines. The retailer, which is especially well known for its PC and component sales, claims to have 25 million registered users and 8.5 million subscribers to its regular email bulletin — numbers that look set to grow if the company can find a way to stand amidst competition like Amazon, eBuyer and the British PC-specialist Scan.

The original Legend of Zelda goes first-person for Oculus Rift demo

What happens when you cross Being John Malkovich with NES classic The Legend of Zelda? You get the terrifying Oculus Rift demo seen in video below the break. The mod is currently just the game’s overworld and its first dungeon, but there are plans to scale up the whole game to VR playability by March of this year (yes, for free — this is Nintendo’s property, after all). Should you already have an Oculus headset and a strong constitution, the demo’s available right here.

Tegra Note 7 tablet to get an LTE refresh, early adopters pick up KitKat update

Itching for a Tegra-powered gaming device, but insist on a slate with LTE support? You’re in luck: NVIDIA is building a tablet just for you. Today the company announced the Tegra Note 7 LTE, a $299 variant of its existing Note 7 tablet equipped with (you guessed it) a cellular radio — its own i500 LTE chip, to be precise. The new radio promises to support “popular carriers across the world,” specifically citing bands compatible with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in the US and carriers like O2, Vodafone and Orange in Europe.

The upgraded slate won’t be available until sometime next quarter, but NVIDIA says it’ll be rocking Android 4.4.2 when it does arrive. Of course, if you already have the WiFi model, you won’t have to wait — the latest OTA update delivers not only Kitkat, but a port of the NVIDIA Shield’s Gamepad Mapper app. Check out the company’s official announcement at the source link below.

Oculus is running short on dev kits due to nearly-extinct components

While you’re still dreaming of the day you can put on an Oculus VR headset and become a space accountant, devs have long been able to buy a starter kit for their projects. Any dev who doesn’t have it yet might have a hard time getting one, though, because the company will soon stop selling its developer kits. According to a Reddit post by the startup’s community manager, there’s a shortage because some of the headset’s components are no longer being manufactured. Although Oculus is looking for other sources, it can’t quite tell when production can start again — even worse, it’s fast running out of stock. The firm has remaining units it intends to distribute in select locations, but anyone who misses out might just have to wait for the second developer kit to come out.

The last Oculus developer (DK1) units will be sold in the following countries:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • Countries in the European Union
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Australia
  • Switzerland
  • Norway

Microsoft is hand-picking users to test Xbox One’s next software update

Ahead of Xbox One’s second spring update Microsoft is inviting a handful of gamers to test the patch’s mutiplayer features. As Major Nelson tells it, the invite process starts today and if picked, you’ll be first in line to try future updates as well. Lucky users will be notified via a Live message containing a download token within the next week (or maybe later); all Redmond asks in return is that you offer feedback about the new bells and whistles on a private forum. Microsoft has a storied history of letting users test its firmware updates, but, given the social focus of this one, we wish the Titanfall beta was still running.

Nokia dives into game development with Modern Mayor for Windows Phone

It looks like Nokia has added game development to its repertoire as the handset maker released free-to-play Modern Mayor for WP8 Lumia devices today. The title tasks players with the mission of saving a dying town from complete ruin and returning it to its glory days. This means that you’re in charge of of all construction, keeping the town clean and donating to local charities with in-app purchases. Don’t worry though, Townhall Laura, the city publicist, is there to lend a hand. You didn’t really think the position was just a title, did you?

Xbox One Media Remote arrives in early March for $25

Xbox One Media Remote

That didn’t take long. Scarcely a week after the Xbox One Media Remote briefly surfaced at a Canadian retailer, Microsoft has made it official. As expected, the peripheral lets you navigate videos more elegantly than with the bundled gamepad. However, it’s not just a cheap substitute for a mobile device using Smartglass. If you have your Kinect plugged in, the remote will also steer the power and volume of your TV or receiver. That consolidated control may help justify buying the peripheral for $25 when it ships in March — especially if you’re the sort who’s more likely to watch Netflix than play Forza.
