Xbox One ‘Rainbow Six Siege’ will come with both ‘Vegas’ games

To accompany today’s news that Xbox One will soon be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games, Ubisoft just announced that Rainbow Six: Vegas and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 will be free for anyone that buys the latest game in the franchise, Rainbow Six: Siege. Although no one has explained exactly how this’ll work, all Xbox 360 games will need to be downloaded (rather than played by disc), so you’d assume Seige will arrive with download codes for both titles. Ubi is the second developer to announce such a deal today, as Bethesda is giving away Fallout 3 with Xbox One copies of Fallout 4. Hopefully this becomes a trend of sorts — it’d make a nice change from having to buy all those “definitive” editions, wouldn’t it?

‘Rare Replay’ puts 30 classic games on your Xbox One this August

'Rare Replay' at Microsoft's E3 2015 event

It’s Rare’s 30th anniversary, and the game studio is marking the occasion in style: It’s releasing Rare Replay, a 30-title compilation for the Xbox One. The pack includes everything from the mind-numbingly difficult Battletoads through to Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark. There isn’t mention of whether or not the games are getting visual upgrades or new modes, but there are 10,000 Gamerscore points up for grabs if you’re playing for bragging rights. Replay arrives August 4th, so you won’t have to wait long to relive the Rare games of your childhood.

Microsoft shows off ‘Minecraft’ built specifically for HoloLens

At its E3 2015 event, Microsoft has given us a new demo of Minecraft built specifically for its HoloLens augmented reality headset. As we’ve guessed since the hardware originally appeared, the creative world-building game is a perfect fit for the futuristic hardware. The demonstrator at first controlled the experience with an Xbox One controller, then just used his hands in the air to play, and could peek around, above and through his creations simply by moving around in real space. A little awkward to watch, sure, but the live feed showed us a simulated HoloLens feed so we could follow along. We still don’t know when we’ll be exploring its combination of real and virtual worlds for ourselves, but Microsoft promises more information at the MineCon event that starts July 4th. If you missed it in the stream, check out our gallery to see how it all looks.

Microsoft HoloLens introduces all new ways to game with mixed reality, including “Minecraft” on HoloLens, a fully-featured version of “Minecraft” that allows players to explore the game world in full 3-D.

Microsoft is also partnering with Valve for VR on Windows 10

It seems like Microsoft’s approach to virtual reality will mimic its approach to the PC world: Support just about every piece of hardware. The company just revealed that it’s partnering with Valve VR to “make Windows 10 the best platform for VR.” Valve is also partnering with HTC for the Vive headset, which impressed us earlier this year. This news comes on top of last week’s surprising announcement that Microsoft is teaming up with Oculus, a deal that will see Oculus bundle in the Xbox One controller with its headset. Oculus VR users will also be able to stream Xbox One games to their headsets (though not in VR mode), which is something we expect Microsoft to offer to Valve VR hardware as well. Unfortunately, we still haven’t heard anything about the Xbox One supporting VR headsets directly, but we’re still hoping for some sort of surprise announcement.

‘Gears of War: Ultimate Edition’ lands August 25th, beta starts today

'Gears of War: Ultimate Edition'

Yes, the leaks were accurate. Microsoft and The Coalition have taken the wraps off Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, a remastered version of the original Gears of War for the Xbox One. The cover-based shooter is getting the obligatory visual upgrade, including 60-frames-per-second graphics — important when you’re ambushing an unsuspecting multiplayer rival. Ultimate Edition launches on August 25th, but a free public beta is starting today.

‘Gears of War 4’ starts a new saga in late 2016

'Gears 4'

What, you didn’t think The Coalition would stop its Gears of War revival with a remastered version of the original game, did you? Sure enough, the developer has announced Gears of War 4 (or as it was shown on screen, Gears 4) for the Xbox One. There isn’t much to say about it yet, but it’s definitely not a straight-up continuation of Marcus Fenix’s story — he’s nowhere to be found in the preview clip shown at E3, and the enemies aren’t the usual Locust you’ve come to know and hate. You’ll know the full story when this fourth Gears game ships in late 2016.

Sony already has over 30 Project Morpheus VR games in the works

We’re ready and waiting for Sony’s E3 press conference later today, but for now you can get yourself amped up for its PlayStation 4 virtual reality initiative, Project Morpheus, with an early look by Wired. The big news? There are already more than 30 VR games in the works, according to Sony Worldwide Studio’s Shuhei Yoshida. And while all of them won’t be ready for launch, it sounds like Sony and its developer partners are making a concerted effort to push the VR experience forward. “You think everything’s going to fall into one of four categories-sports, shooters, action, etc.-and that’s not the case,” said Adam Boyes, Sony’s VP of developer relations. “Because developers have such great access to VR tools in general, they’re just throwing everything at the wall.” Project Morpheus is still expected to land early next year, and Sony reps say that the Morpheus headset will likely go for “several hundred dollars.”

Boyes says some of the current VR projects include puzzle games, relaxation games or simply first-person exploration games. Impulse Gear, one of the studios developing Morpheus experiences, has also been working on a way to make shooting more realistic in virtual reality. It’s created a prototype gun peripheral that takes advantage of Sony’s Move motion controller, as well as the innards of the PS3’s DualShock controller, for some truly accurate virtual fragging. That’s a step beyond the standard keyboard/mouse and gaming controller interaction we’ve seen from competitors like Oculus, but right now Impulse Gear’s peripheral is still pretty experimental.

While competition for VR platform of choice is going to be fierce over the next few years, Sony has a few advantages. For one, it’s relying on the PlayStation 4, a console that’s already in millions of homes and will only get cheaper over time. Oculus and HTC’s Vive, on the other hand, connect to expensive gaming PCs. While the total cost of an Oculus VR setup could run you around $1,500, you’ll most likely be able to get a PS4 and Morpheus headset for about half as much. Being a closed platform also makes it easier for developers to build for Project Morpheus — they don’t have to worry as much about varying CPU and video card speeds.

Xbox One will play Xbox 360 games, preview members can try it today

Fans of backwards compatibility are getting their wish: Microsoft just announced that the Xbox One will be able to play Xbox 360 games. Demonstrated on stage with Mass Effect by Mike Ybarra, it sounds a lot like the OG Xbox -> Xbox 360 setup — you just plug in the disc or download the game, and the system plays it, but now with Xbox One features like taking screenshots, Game DVR, and game streaming included. All developers need to do is approve a game for backwards compatibility for it to work, so the list of compatible titles could grow rapidly. Microsoft took a chance to ding Sony for its PlayStation Now streaming setup too, promising “gamers won’t have to pay to play games they already own.” If you’re in the Xbox preview program you will be able to try this out later today with a limited set of titles. A teaser image for the feature showed off other games like Perfect Dark Zero, Gears of War, Super Meat Boy, Halo Reach, Halo 3, Shadowrun and Borderlands. We’ll try it out once it launches but wow, funny to see this here just two years after Don Mattrick called it “backwards.”

‘Halo 5’ brings the epic scale of its solo campaign to multiplayer

'Halo 5' Warzone mode

Halo 5: Guardians won’t force you to you choose between the grand scale of its single-player story and the camaraderie of multiplayer… in theory, you’ll get both at the same time. The crew at 343 Industries has revealed that its sci-fi shooter will include Warzone, a 24-player mode that has you facing off against both other humans and AI opponents. Its maps are about four times the size of those from earlier games in the series, too. The addition reflects just how important the team dynamic (also shown off in single-player mode at E3) will be when Halo 5 arrives in October — it’s anything but an afterthought.
