Nicki Minaj and Jason Statham are getting their own mobile games

2015 BET Awards - Press Room

Hip-hop fans have had a lot to deal with lately: Dr. Dre shelved Detox, there’s that whole Meek Mill and Drake feud that’s spilling out all over Twitter and Run the Jewels might not be hitting your town on this fall’s tour. There’s a bright spot, though: Nicki Minaj is getting her own game courtesy of the folks behind Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. Glu Mobile announced that Minaj has lent her likeness, voice and creative directorship exclusively to the company for a game expected to launch next summer. Also joining the lady who kissed a girl and liked it is The Transporter himself, Jason Statham.

Sniper X: Kill Confirmed launches sometime this fall and promises the same vague features as Glu’s other in-development games thus far: name, likeness and a celebrity voice. But at least we know that it’s a first-person shooter. If you’d rather not wait to see if it’s just garbage littered with microtransactions designed to bleed your bank account dry, maybe give the excellent Hitman: Sniper from Eidos a run instead.

‘Mafia III’ looks like the 1968 version of ‘True Detective’

The first trailer for Mafia III takes us down to the American bayou in 1968, tied up and bloodied in the backseat of a car while Vietnam veteran Lincoln Clay menacingly espouses the true meaning of “family.” Clay is Mafia III‘s main character and he represents a shift away from the snappily dressed, mainly white mobsters of previous Mafia games. Clay is an orphan who finds his family in the black mob of New Orleans, and when the Italian mob slaughters his new kin, Clay vows revenge and turns the city’s organized-crime power structure on its head. Mafia III is due to hit Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016.Slideshow-309721

Mafia III is helmed by a new 2K studio, Hangar 13, which is in turn led by award-winning Star Wars: The Force Unleashed writer Haden Blackman. The game offers players a choice in how to run Clay’s burgeoning crime empire, whether via violent, brute force, or through stealth and deception.

“In Mafia III, we are introducing players to an unexpected new anti-hero and an iconic city to explore, all within a hard-boiled drama set during one of the most turbulent years in American history,” Blackman says in a press release.

Fly among beautiful floating islands hiding ancient secrets in ‘Aer’

Aer is more gorgeous every time I see it. I first ran across it by accident: While waiting in a line at Gamescom 2013, I noticed Robin Hjelte, the game’s creator, showing off a video on his tablet to a small, excited crowd. I peeked over his shoulder to see a beautiful pastel landscape with rolling green grass, adorable animals, and, at the center of it all, a young woman — who suddenly transformed into a bird and soared off the land’s edge, aiming for another tranquil island floating high in the sky. I gave Hjelte my card and told him to hit me up if he wanted to talk about the game. The following year at Gamescom, we sat down for a lovely chat. This year at E3, I finally got to play Aer (now with support from renowned German publisher Daedalic Entertainment), and the game sang in my hands as I flawlessly swapped between land and sky, and I wandered through dark, mysterious passageways with even darker secrets. Today, Daedalic and Hjelte’s studio, Forgotten Key, released a brand new, infintely more gorgeous trailer for Aer, alongside confirmation that the game is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac and Linux in 2016.Slideshow-309675

Flash back to E3 2015: With a DualShock 4 controller and an alpha version of the game, Aer plays like the quiet cousin to both Ico and Secrets of Raetikon. The islands, floating among the clouds, appear small as the young girl, Auk, winds through the sky in bird form, but once she lands it’s clear there’s plenty to explore in the grasses, mountains, ancient structures and caverns of each mass. Flying in the game is exhilarating and natural on the gamepad, while walking allows Auk a chance to slow down and truly explore the worlds beneath her.

I enter a dark cavern and find the remains of an expansive temple. As I solve a light puzzle, Hjelte explains that while Aer isn’t a horror game, it features massive beasts hiding in the shadows and dark secrets buried in the temples. He compares it to a Zelda adventure: Thrilling yet peaceful. Running around the stones in this giant cave, exploring the nooks and crannies of a lost civilization, I can’t help agreeing.

‘Mighty No. 9’ won’t arrive until early 2016

Mighty No. 9, the new game from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, isn’t going to be arriving until some point in the first three months of 2016. It’s the second delay for the kickstarted title, which was originally slated to drop this spring before being pushed back to September. According to an update posted to Kickstarter, the reason behind the push back is that while the core functionality of the piece has been finished, there’s still a raft of bugs and issues relating to the online components that have yet to be fixed. Considering that so many recent high-profile releases have been sold with bugs that make them almost unplayable, it’s probably wise to hold off. Still, judging by the comments on the post, it looks as if plenty of backers would much rather have the game now and wait for the features to come later.

Xbox One gets its first exclusive external hard drive

2TB Game Drive for Xbox

Even though modern consoles ship with at least 500GB of storage, you only have to install a small number of digital games before your internal disk is full. Sony and Microsoft have alleviated some of the pain by bundling more storage, but if you’ve already put money down for a next-gen gaming machine, you’re left with the option of switching out the default hard drive or, if your console supports it, attaching external storage via USB. Seagate recognized that most gamers probably prefer the hassle-free option, so it’s teamed up with Microsoft to create a new 2TB Game Drive that works with both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

According to Major Nelson, the Game Drive is the “only external drive designed exclusively” for Microsoft’s consoles. That explains why it’s coated in the familiar Xbox green and features the official logo, but it also includes USB 3.0 in order to save digital games and associated files as quickly as possible. If you’ve decided to ditch the discs and find yourself in the market for something that truly looks like an official piece of first-party hardware, the Game Drive for Xbox will go on sale for $110 at GameStop, Amazon and other worldwide retailers later this month.

Xbox 360 update will make it just as social as the Xbox One

With Windows 10, Microsoft is all about the Xbox integration. Xbox 360 preview users can now see gaming activity from Windows 10, Xbox One and of course, their Xbox 360. The feeds show achievements, broadcasts, screenshots, text posts and GameDVR clips from you or people you follow. You can then share or comment on directly from the console, or create a new post. The Xbox One has had that feature since February, but as one Major Nelson commenter put it, at least Microsoft isn’t forgetting its old warhorse completely. The feature has only rolled out to Xbox 360 preview program participants, but everyone else will likely see it with the next regular update.

Intel targets gamers with sixth-gen ‘Skylake’ CPU launch

With mobile annihilating the mainstream PC industry, Intel knows gaming is buttering its bread. The chip giant launched its sixth-gneration “Skylake” desktop processors today with two enthusiast quad-core models: the Core I7-6700K and i5-6600K. The 14-nanometer chips are unlocked for maximum overclocking (all the “K”-series will be), and if you’re not into that, the two new chips have fairly high base frequencies: 4.0GHz for the Core i7-6700K and 3.5GHz for the i5-6600K. Compared to similar current-gen models, prices are reasonable — suggested retail is $350 for the i7-6700K and $243 for the i5-6600K, with street prices likely lower.

Unfortunately, the i7-6700K offers just a modest performance increase (10 percent) over last-gen Haswell i7-4790K CPUs and little, if any, advantage over the current Haswell-E i7-5820K chip. However, the Skylake models are the first 14-nanometer performance CPU’s that Intel has launched, since the lower-powered Broadwell 14-nanometer desktop chips aren’t aimed at gamers. The smaller transistors should help overclocking, and rumor has it that the i7-6700K can be pushed to 5GHz, which may give it an edge over current tech. At any rate, with 10-nanometer “Cannonlake” CPUs now delayed, Skylake is it until next year.

Intel also revealed a new platform for the chips, the Z170 chipset. Like Haswell-E, the Skylake models use DDR4 RAM, which is much faster than DDR3 memory, but also way more expensive. (Skylake chips won’t run on Haswell-E X99 motherboards, which also use DDR4 RAM.) However, the Z170 chipset has a dual memory controller, so you can use use cheaper DDR3L memory on motherboards that support it. Another plus to the platform is new Intel HD 530 graphics, which run 20-40 percent faster than last-gen Intel HD. It also has 16 PCI Express 3.0 lanes, giving you more USB 3, graphics and storage options. And Intel just happens to have a new PCI Express 3.0-based 800GB 750 series SSD drive with read speeds up to 2,200 MB/s.

Many folks expected Intel to launch more of its Skylake lineup today, including mainstream and mobile CPUs, so what happened? That was just a rumor in the first place, but Intel has narrowed down the timeline. It’ll reveal more information at the Intel Developers Forum on August 18th, and launch the rest of the sixth-gen Skylake lineup sometime in Q3 2015. The mainstream chips will also see a modest performance bump over current-gen tech, but are expected to sip less power, giving future Macbooks, ultrabooks, laptops and tablets improved battery life. Down the road, it may also reveal more high-performance desktop Skylake CPUs, hopefully including an “Extreme” model.

‘Star Wars: Battlefront’ gets 20-player aerial combat

Yes, slicing your enemies with a lightsaber is one reason to buy Star Wars: Battlefront, but it shouldn’t be the only reason. At Gamescom 2015, Electronic Arts has revealed that it’s adding in an aerial combat sim to the game, entitled Star Wars: Dogfight. The title is a 20-player aerial combat mode that pits Rebel forces against the Empire’s TIE Fighter squadrons, much like the Lucasarts classics of yore. 20 human players will also be joined by 20 computer-controlled ships, meaning that each glorious battle will see 40 craft zooming around at once.

Ordinarily, players will be asked to pick between an A, B, X or Y Wing on one side, or TIEs on the other, but more famous ships are available as a special bonus. For Rebels, the hero powerup is a few minutes flying the Millennium Falcon, while Imperials get to hang out on Slave-1, Boba Fett’s whip of choice. If that’s gotten you super excited, then you can begin dogfighting when Battlefront launches on November 17th.

Watch Faith return to freerunning in ‘Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst’

EA and Dice are returning to the Mirror’s Edge franchise early next year, and today we got an in-depth look at the game in action. Just like the original, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst has Faith leaping from buildings, bounding up ledges and taking out enemies with some lightning-quick hand-to-hand combat. The squeaky-clean aesthetic is intact, but it’s clear the jump to current hardware has given the parkour playground a little extra sheen. Check out the new gameplay trailer below to see the slick first-person freerunner in action.

Razer stuffs colored lighting into more gaming keyboards and keypads

Razer's Deathstalker Chroma keyboard

Razer has been decking out seemingly every gaming peripheral it makes with many-colored Chroma lighting, and there’s no signs of that trend letting up any time soon. The company has rolled out Chroma versions of both its slim, laptop-like DeathStalker keyboard and its Orbweaver keypad, giving you even more ways to put on a light show while you play. Both let you pick from 16.8 million shades, including in multiple zones on the keyboard. As before, you can even sync colors and light patterns between other Chroma devices — handy if you want to change the mood between games, or just show off at your next tournament. Just be prepared to pay for the pretty. Both Chroma devices are shipping very shortly, but you’ll shell out $100 for the DeathStalker and $130 for its Orbweaver sibling.
