Inventor makes a real-world ‘Assassin’s Creed’ rope launcher

Colin Furze is terrified by his 'Assassin's Creed' grappling gauntlet

One of the centerpieces of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is Jacob Frye’s wrist-mounted rope launcher — he can scale buildings like a Victorian-era Batman. But would such a thing be possible in real life? If you ask Colin Furze, the answer is yes… sort of. As part of a promo for Ubisoft, the inventor built a real rope launcher gauntlet that uses a carbon dioxide canister to propel the line, and a motorized winch to hoist you up. You wouldn’t want to use it for any daring escapes: it’s bulky, slow, and needs a harness to support your weight. However, the very fact that it works at all is impressive. If you ever need to fight Templars (or just want to climb walls with ease), you’ll want to ask Furze for some pointers.

‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ returns to PC on October 28th

'Batman: Arkham Knight'

Months after Warner Bros. yanked the PC port of Batman: Arkham Knight to tackle its many launch day glitches, it’s ready for take two. The publisher has announced that Rocksteady’s game will return to Steam on October 28th at 10AM Pacific, or 1PM Eastern. The re-launch will also include a patch that brings PC players up to speed on features that are available on all console versions (such as Photo Mode and the Arkham Asylum skin), and anyone with a Season Pass will catch up on downloadable content. It’s too soon to say if this will be the Batman game you were expecting this spring, but it should be much closer to the intended vision.

One of Xbox Live’s creators has left Microsoft

Inside The 2015 E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo

The man who helped transform Xbox Live from a network of desktop PCs running under its developers’ desks to a service connecting some 39 million game-playing folk has left Microsoft. Eric Neustadter has worked at the company for 18-and-a-half years, 14-and-a-half of those dedicated to Xbox where he’s most recently served as the platform’s director of architecture. He recently returned from a sabbatical, and the co-host of the Major Nelson podcast hasn’t yet made any indication of what’s he’s going to do next. If you’d like some more info on who the man who holds the first-created gamertag (“e”) is, you should definitely read this two-part history on building Xbox Live which chronicles the birth of the service and its relaunch with the Xbox 360’s 2005 release. They’re worth your time — I promise.

Playdate: Kart racing with Disney Princesses and stepping on LEGOs

Just when you think you’re done with this whole “toys-to-life” genre of video games, nostalgia is there to pull you back in. Did you play with LEGOs as a kid? Do you like Walt Disney? Have you ever played Mario Kart? Then there’s still plenty of expensive, RFID-powered toys to exploit childhood. Today, Tim Seppalla and I are looking at LEGO Dimensions’ multi-franchise romp through your toy-chest and Disney Infinity’s Toy Box Speedway. Is your wallet ready? Join us at 6PM Eastern / 3PM Pacific right here, on the Engadget Gaming homepage or at Twitch.tv/joystiq to find out.

Fallout Beer is a real thing

Miss out on the special edition of Fallout 4? You know, the one that comes with a real-life, smartphone-enabled Pip-Boy? Never mind, you can always drown your sorrows with some Fallout Beer instead. That is, if you live in the UK anyway. Developer Bethesda has teamed up with Carlsberg for the promotional beverage, which it says is inspired by Vault-Tec Industries and the rest of the post-apocalyptic game franchise. A 12-pack will set you back £29.99 on Amazon, with delivery expected around November 5th. Fallout 4 arrives five days later, meaning you should have the perfect brew ready for your inaugural adventure in Boston. Bethesda describes it as a “pilsner lager, with a refreshing zesty hoppy taste and a floral aroma” — we’ll let you decide if that’s better than an ice-cold Nuka-Cola.

Xbox Live gets 28 percent more monthly active users in the first quarter

Paul Scheer experiences The NFL on Xbox One

It was a pretty good first quarter for Microsoft on the gaming front. The company revealed today that monthly active Xbox Live users increased by 28 percent over the last three months, a huge jump that now puts the active user base at 39 million. To be clear: These aren’t the total amount of people on Xbox Live (which sits around 49 million), just those who are playing at least once a month. The summer break probably accounted for much of that growth, together with high-profile releases like Metal Gear Solid V and Destiny: The Taken King. Still, the gaming success wasn’t enough to help Microsoft’s More Personal Computing group — which includes all of its devices — still saw revenue fall 17 percent in Q1, mostly due to the 54 percent revenue drop in phones. And that figure isn’t too surprising: Microsoft didn’t really have many fresh phone offerings over the summer.

Watch how Neon Indian used Kinect for its latest concert

The combination of the electronic band Neon Indian and Microsoft’s Kinect makes so much sense it seems practically inevitable. During Neon Indian’s performance at the CMJ Music Marathon in NYC this month, it used five Kinect sensors to capture the movement of band members, the results of which were projected in a trippy light performance behind them. You can see the Xbox One Kinect sensors set up throughout the stage for its performance of “The Glitzy Hive” from its latest album, VEGA INTL. Night School, in the video below. We’ve seen plenty of other intriguing uses of Kinect for music performances — even the Seattle Symphony has experimented with it — but it’s still interesting to see how different artists approach Microsoft’s motion-sensing camera. Neon Indian will be using the Kinect setup in select locations throughout its upcoming tour, and you can get a better sense of how it works after the break.
