Sign up for Samsung Pay, get a free wireless charger

Samsung Pay press

If you’re the proud owner of a Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus, or a Note 5, then you have the chance to snag a free wireless charging pad from Samsung!

From October 28 to November 8, Samsung is running a promotion to boost the membership of their Samsung Pay service. Owners of the aforementioned devices who sign up for Samsung Pay during this brief window will get a wireless charger mailed to them, no strings attached. You should note that the deal may run out sooner than November 8, as Samsung is limiting the offer to only the first 200,000 participants.

Samsung Pay is the company’s digital payment medium that is accepted practically anywhere you would use a credit card. The service is easy to use, and Samsung boasts that Pay uses several layers of security to keep your information private. They also claim not to store or share payment data.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has offered free stuff for signing up with Pay. The service only came out in September, and already we’re on Round Two of the promotional giveaways. Samsung must want new users on Samsung Pay pretty badly.

There are a handful of usual caveats to the deal. You have to be eighteen or older and live in the US (territories don’t count). You also can’t double-up on hardware if you already got a charger from Samsung during their last promotional deal.

If this sounds like something you want to jump on, head over to the promotional page and enter your email address to register. The site warns that your charger may take eight to ten weeks to arrive. Are you going to spring for this deal? Why or why not? What are your thoughts on Samsung Pay? Let us know in the comments.

BlackBerry Priv edges will be more productive than the edges on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

BlackBerry_Priv_Android_smartphone (2)If you love the looks of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, but hated how little function they gave, the Blackberry Priv has a surprise for you. It also features dual curved edges, but new reports are showing that they will be much more functional.

Canadian carrier Telus has leaked some documents showing a feature called Productivity Edge. It has been taken down now, but we still obtained some pictures from it showing features of what the edges can do.

The edge features seem to be somewhat similar to the S6 Edge, but expand upon it. One neat feature is the edge turns into a battery bar when charging.

An-early-look-at-BlackBery-Privs-Productivity-Edge-4Other features are swiping from the edge and getting a notes app to quickly write something down. The edges, to me, seem almost like a Note 5 and S6 Edge combined. Instead of taking out the S pen and getting a new app menu, that app menu is now built into the edges through swipe gestures.

Another cool thing we learned from the leak is if you swipe up on an app it will launch the widget if it has one. Similar to Action Launcher’s Shutters feature.

The more leaks that we see about the Priv the more interested I am in it. Wether you like it or not, BlackBerry is at least trying new things that many other Android manufactures have not.

OnePlus will help you get rid of that old, crusty Samsung with new trade-in offer

oneplus_2_smartphone_front_back_promo_image

You have only had your new Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 for a few months at most now, but it probably feels like you are lugging around some out-of-date bag phone, right? OnePlus wants to help you out with the envy you must be feeling in being saddled with an older device as you look upon something shiny and new like the OnePlus 2 smartphone.

OnePlus has launched their new #TakeTheEdgeOff promotion for smartphone buyers who may regret pursuing The Next Big Thing these past few months and invested in a new device from Samsung. If you own one of Samsung’s flagships that launched in 2015, OnePlus will let you trade it in for a new OnePlus 2 and they will handle recycling your old Samsung device via a donation to the Hope Phones program.

Don’t think that just anyone can take advantage of this offer though. OnePlus probably anticipated smartphone users may be knocking their doors down to trade-in their latest Samsung devices to get a new OnePlus 2, so they are limiting this to a maximum of 50 winners who go through the process of signing up before the deadline on October 18th. Since those applying have to use the #TakeTheEdgeOff hashtag on social media, you can expect your timelines and feeds to explode with posts tagged in this manner.

If you really do want to try to trade-in your Samsung flagship smartphone for a OnePlus 2 64GB model in Sandstone Black, hit the source link for all the details and to submit the entry form.

A future software update will bring Samung Pay to Verizon

samsung_pay_mobile_payments_unpacked_2015

On Tuesday, Verizon confirmed that select Samsung phones will soon be able to take advantage of the company’s mobile payments service.

samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_galaxy_note_5_screen_off_TA

Verizon named the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy Note 5, and Galaxy S6 Edge+ as the phones to support Samsung Pay on its network. The support will be live after a “future software update.” Prior to confirming Samsung Pay’s arrival, Big Red tiptoed around the subject. Now, with many device owners pressing them on it, Verizon caved and provided news that is making many happy. This will allow owners of the aforementioned devices to use make purchases seamlessly through NFC and magnetic secure transmission (MST) technology.

The carrier has not provided a release date at this time. Big Red only redirects people to its News Center to check for updates and additional information. The good news is that Verizon really got its act together when it comes to issuing software updates. Although it’s still not the fastest carrier handling software updates, Verizon has come a very long way from when it would be months before a flagship would get a major update.

Samsung Pay officially launches in the U.S.

samsung-pay-galaxy-s6-edge

The beta program of Samsung Pay began rolling out in the US on August 27th to a select few, but now Samsung’s mobile payments service is available to everyone. Everyone using a Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 handset anyway.

In its first month of service, Samsung Pay has seen more than $30 million worth of transactions in South Korea, which is impressive considering the limited number of handsets that it’s compatible with.

The Samsung Pay service is compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular, while Verizon Wireless is currently not on board for some reason. Cards from the following financial institutions are supported:

  • American Express
  • Bank of America
  • Citibank
  • U.S. Bank
  • Various merchant cards from Synchrony Financial – AutoZone, Bose, Boston Interiors, Exxon, John Eagle Toyota, Just Brakes, Meineke, Midas, Mobil, NAPA, Pearl Vision, Pep Boys, Plano Cycling & Fitness, Sleepy’s, Sunglass Hut, VCA Animal Hospitals

Samsung Pay can be used using NFC or MST at pay terminals. The most popular, MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission), emits a magnetic signal mimicking the magnetic strip found on your bank card, thus nullifying the need to actually physically swipe your card in the card reader. MST is said to be accepted at nearly all payment terminals and is as secure as using NFC to complete a transaction.

An added bonus if you are signing up with a Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 Edge+, is that you will receive a free wireless charger or flip case from Samsung just for activating Samsung Pay on your device. The offer runs until October 11th. Seeing as the service is free of charge, it seems like a great way to get your hands on a new accessory. Just remember that Samsung Pay doesn’t play nicely with rooted handsets.

Are you excited that Samsung Pay is now available to everyone*?

*Everyone using a 2015 Samsung flagship

samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_galaxy_note_5_names_TAVerizon are sending out security updates to all 2015 Samsung flagship phones. That includes the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, S6, and S6 Edge. The update does not really go over much as to what it entails other than “Android security patches”.

If you own one of the listed phones and are on Verizon, but have not received the update yet, you can manually check for it. Go to your settings, click “About device” at the very bottom, and click “Software update”.
