Instagram hits 400 million users strong

Instagram today took to a blog post to unveil that it has 400 million users strong. The company says the last 100 million to join come primarily by way of Europe and Asia, but that’s not the most impressive aspect.

75% of Instagram’s users come from outside of the United States, with Brazil, Japan, and Indonesia being the countries to add the most users as of late. It’s certainly hard to believe that Instagram launched five years ago, and in that time, it’s gone through quite a few crazy transitions, such as being bought by Facebook for $1 billion.

One thing’s for certain: Instagram is becoming a new medium for sharing news across the globe, especially as Instagram’s community grows larger. If you haven’t tried Instagram before, it’s a free download–just hit the download link below.

Instagram isn’t slowing down as it tops 400 million users

If you thought that Instagram couldn’t keep the momentum up after it hit 300 million users late last year… well, you’re in for a surprise. The photo-focused social network reports that it just reached 400 million users, or a full 100 million more than it had 9 months ago. Given that it also took roughly 9 months to get the 100 million before that, this suggests that there are still plenty of shutterbugs willing to sign up despite all the ads. It’s not certain how many of these are truly active users, but more than 75 percent of them come from outside the US. The question isn’t so much whether or not Instagram is popular, then, but when it’ll run out of budding photographers.

Moments by Facebook is now available in “most countries”

Back in June, Facebook announced a new app for Android and iOS that would feed into its main Facebook app: Moments by Facebook. The premise of the app is that at social events, we either end up taking a million of the same photo with multiple devices, or someone takes a photo and we never get a hold of it because that person never posts it up. Moments aims to ease that process of sharing by making it private and using grouping algorithms to make it easier for you to share groups of photos from any given day. When it was announced, Moments was only released for the US, but obviously that’s been enough of a success for Facebook to want to spread the love, announcing that the Moments app is now available in “most countries” – I can confirm that Australia is one of those countries.

Moments is a simple enough app – you can get to it via the main app in the options menu, and there are only so many things you can do from within the app. But for those people that take loads of pictures at events and need to distribute them, Moments is likely to be an app that will prove to be very useful.

Buy items right from their Facebook pages with the new Shop section


Facebook is on its way to becoming a one-stop shop for all of your social networking, selfie, news, disliking and retail therapy needs. Select merchants will now feature a Shop section on their Facebook pages, allowing customers to purchase items without leaving the site. The new section is made in collaboration with digital commerce company Shopify, and at first the Shop addition will be available only to Shopify retailers (at no additional charge). It’s designed with mobile devices in mind, since that’s where most of Facebook’s users are, Shopify says.

“Existing Facebook Store apps don’t work on mobile devices, which is how most people now use Facebook,” Shopify writes. “As well, existing Facebook Store apps only add a tab to your page, while the new Facebook Shop section appears as a larger section on your main Facebook Page…. Finally, the new Shop section includes a subscribe button that lets people get notified when you add new products.”

Facebook and Shopify have been testing out the Shop function over the past few months. So far, Facebook doesn’t take a cut from sales secured via Shop.

Facebook will display missing child alerts in UK News Feeds


Facebook’s enormous userbase makes it a powerful tool for distributing public service announcements. To maximise this potential, the company is introducing “Child Rescue Alerts” in the UK today, which will appear in your News Feed with crucial information about a recently missing person. Instead of a blanket broadcast, however, Facebook will usually filter these alerts so they’re only visible to people nearby. The idea being that if you’re within a designated search area, there’s a better chance you’ll have seen the missing person, or be able to keep a look out for anyone matching their description. Of course, you can also share these alerts to everyone in your network, increasing their reach.

The first six hours in a missing child case are often called the “golden hours” — a critical period holding the best odds of their safe return. With Facebook’s new alert system, crucial information — a description and a photo of the child, as well as their last known location — should spread more quickly than before, giving police the best available intelligence. Facebook says the alerts will only be issued if a child’s life is in danger, or they’re believed to be at risk of serious harm — so if you see one in your feed, you should give it your full attention. “While we of course hope that we don’t have to use this system, this partnership with Facebook will make a huge difference in extending the number of eyes and ears on the ground when the worst happens,” Jo Youle, CEO of Missing People said.

Facebook will add a ‘dislike’ button at some point in the future

We know – most of you probably don’t care about Facebook anymore, but the reality is that Facebook remains one of the biggest social media platforms in the world, so when Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will add a ‘dislike’ button, it naturally makes the news. The plan to roll-out a ‘dislike’ button, which will join the normal ‘like’ button, was revealed during a Q&A session today, and has apparently been a multiple year discussion within the social media giant’s walls. This is what Zuckerberg had to say about it:

“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.”

This is actually kind of groundbreaking for a social media platform. Apart from Reddit, which has the downvote function, no other major social media platform (that I can think of) has any sort of acknowledgement that has a negative connotation – however, the need has arisen simply because we are humans: “If you are sharing something that is sad…then it may not feel comfortable to ‘like’ that post,” says Zuckerberg.


And for the people who are wondering why something simple like a ‘dislike’ button is so hard to add, there are far-reaching search engine optimization issues that come with such a button – does a post that has a lot of dislikes mean it is a hated post, or should Facebook’s algorithm push it out as a viral post? Obviously, we’ll leave that to Facebook, but it will be interesting to see the results whenever it is released.

Zuckerberg says ‘Dislike’ button is finally coming to Facebook


facebook dislike buttonMark Zuckerberg says at townhall meeting the long awaited “Dislike” button is coming soon. Facebook have been working on this feature for quite some time now, but Zuckerberg didn’t “want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts.”

People have been asking for a dislike button for years now and Zuckerberg agrees.

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it,”

Now, when horrible things happen in our news feeds we won’t have to debate wether we should hit the Like button or not. Finally, there will be a way to show dislike towards things.

Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook may soon get a ‘dislike’ button

If you’ve ever stumbled across a somber post on Facebook that seems a tad too inappropriate to ‘like’, there may be another option sometime soon. In a Q&A session earlier today, co-founder and chief Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the Facebook team is working on adding a ‘dislike’ button to its posts. Not only that, the new button may soon launch as a test sometime relatively soon.

Zuckerberg explains:

People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.

Simply adding a new button to users’ posts isn’t that easy, though. The CEO has expressed his concerns that Facebook could potentially turn into a place where users could go to up and downvote every post they see, similar to how Reddit operates. He says:

That doesn’t seem like the kind of community that we want to create: You don’t want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you in your day and have someone ‘downvote’ it.

Instead, users can think of the ‘dislike’ button as a way to express empathy to their Facebook friends. Zuckerberg says the dislike interaction is surprisingly complicated to create, but the social network as a whole will soon begin testing the feature before a wider rollout takes place. There’s no word as to when we’ll see a wider rollout of the ‘dislike’ button, but it looks like it won’t be too much longer until some users get to use the widely-requested feature.

Now that everyone dislikes Facebook, it’s getting a ‘dislike’ button

For all of those times when “liking” a pal’s Facebook post just doesn’t seem appropriate, it seems you’ll soon have another option. During a Q&A session today, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the social network is indeed working on a “dislike” button. Zuckerberg said Facebook didn’t offer the option from the start for fear of a Reddit-like battle of upvoting and downvoting. However, the company discovered we have a range of emotions we’d like to express in addition to affirmation, most notably a way to show empathy. It turns out the button has been in the works for a while, and Facebook plans to launch it in the near future. We’ll be curious to see how it’ll be deployed, but it sounds like we won’t have to wait long to find out. And we pretty much know what it’ll look like.

Facebook’s new read receipts promise to ruin your friendships

Ever had a Facebook friend send an event invitation that you ignored, whether it was because you couldn’t attend or (let’s be honest) had no interest in going? Unfortunately, you may have to explain yourself in the near future. Facebook has confirmed to The Daily Dot that it’s testing event read receipts which tell organizers when you’ve seen an invitation, making it clear when you’re avoiding things. Ostensibly, this is to help event creators message the right people. However, it really amounts to (as the New York Times‘ Daniel Victor puts it) a “friendship destruction device” — take a glimpse at that polka party invite and you may need to come up with an excuse to avoid alienating a long-time pal. The good news? There’s no certainty that Facebook will roll out the feature to everyone, so you might not be making enemies any time soon.
