Facebook notifications tab blessed with life events, weather and relevant info

FB-Notifications-Tab-Notifications

The Facebook notifications tab is great for seeing content related to you, but it’s not the best at presenting relevant information. What I mean is that so far it has simply been a list of your activity, as opposed to a smart service that goes above and beyond to find extra information you may like to see.

Some would say this is a complete waste of space, as there is much more Facebook could be doing to keep you in touch with people and your surroundings. But it seems the social network has been listening and now they are turning the notifications tab into something that reminds us a lot of Google Now.

Starting today, the Facebook app is getting an update with a completely reworked notifications tab. This area will now include timely, relevant information such as birthdays, life events, sports scores, TV reminders based on pages you like and events.

If that’s not enough, you can also opt to receive some extra cards (yes, they call them that too!) by enabling Location History. These additional cards include events happening around your vicinity, weather information, movies playing in theaters around you and even a list of nearby businesses.

Facebook wants to make sure these new features don’t get in the way or create a shock on users (we all know how everyone gets whenever Facebook changes something!). They have made sure to keep your notification settings the same, and you can customize what you see by tapping on the arrow to the right of each card.

As usual, the update is rolling out periodically, so not all of you will be getting it right away. And it’s coming to both Android and iOS devices. Have any of you checked out the new notifications tab yet? Hit the comments and let us know what you think about it.

Facebook gives staff slow internet to understand the developing world

India Daily Life

Many have accused Silicon Valley of being out of touch, and for good reasons: among other things, it acts as if the entire planet has access to super-fast, always-on internet connections. Facebook, however, wants to give its employees a wake up call. It’s starting up “2G Tuesdays,” an optional initiative that slows down its office internet access to speeds you see in rural India and other developing areas. It’s a blunt reminder that even an ordinary web page can take minutes to load on a basic connection, and that anything Facebook can do to save data will make a huge difference. While it only subjects people to pokey internet access for an hour, that might be enough to ground staffers in reality.

Facebook’s mobile notifications say more about the world around you

Facebook's expanded notifications tab

Facebook’s mobile app practically revolves around the notifications tab, but it can be a pretty insular place. It won’t show much about what’s happening in your friends’ lives, let alone the outside world. The social network wants to change that, though. It’s rolling out an expanded notifications tab that will show you friends’ life milestones, events you’ve joined and a few details based on pages you’ve liked, such as sports scores and upcoming TV shows. You can also see local goings-on if you like, including movies, restaurants and weather. This isn’t exactly Facebook’s take on Google Now, but it’ll certainly seem familiar.

Facebook’s mobile app will now have a better notification tab

Facebook has announced that they will be updating the current notification tab for their mobile app. On top of your normal notifications, you will now see a more useful, personalized list of cards such as friends’ birthdays and life events, sports scores and TV reminders. These notifications will be populated from pages you’ve liked, and upcoming events that you’ve joined.

You can also add other optional information that is tailored for you based on your location, if you have Location History enabled in the mobile app. This includes the following:

  • Things happening around your community, like local events and news
  • Updates on weather conditions and severe weather alerts
  • Movies playing in theaters near you
  • A list of nearby places to eat, with links to the places’ Facebook Pages and reviews

Each card will have an arrow to allow quick customizations of each item or category. Your current notifications setting will not be affected. This new update will begin rolling out today.

Wal-Mart Lowers Earnings Estimate After Weak Second Quarter

According to Reuters, Walmart has reportedly petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to test drones in a variety of tasks — from home delivery and curbside pickup operations to checking warehouse inventories. Use Tribeway to share your favorite moments in life (App Review)

With a plethora of social networks that are cropping up everyday, and those that have already found the graveyard, it’s a tough field to get into nowadays. In order to make a name for yourself, you need to do something that is different than the norm, or make sharing your social status easier than what’s already available. With Tribeway, this is somewhat of a different take on social networks. From the “Trails”, to built-in messaging, Tribeway is one of those alternative options out there.

Setup

Tribeway is a social media platform that offers a different experience for sharing your favorite moments, and chatting with your friends. In order to get started, you’ll need to head over to the Play Store and download it for free. Once you’ve opened it up, you’ll need to sign up with either a Facebook or Google+ account. A little redundant, but necessary nonetheless.

After your account is set up, you’ll more than likely want to test the waters to see if any of your other friends have signed up with Tribeway. To do this, hit the Friends tab, and ‘Add Friends’. Chances are, you’re the lone wolf here, but there are some recommendations for folks you can follow. If you want to invite some of your friends to try out Tribeway with you, there is an option to invite as many people as you’d like, and it will invite them through Facebook or Google+, depending upon what you used to sign up with.

Once you’ve got your account set up, and your friends invited, you’ll want to head over to the main screen. From here, you’ll see a few tabs, a few other buttons as well. What you are presented with, is called “Trails” and is essentially your news feed. Here is where folks you follow can post groups of images and videos, and you can react to those with a thumbs-up, comment, or you can “Boost the post, which will make the post appear on your trails for all of your friends.

Usage

In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, you’ll find a Floating Action Button(FAB), which takes you into your friends panel. From here you can select friends to share your trails with, as well picking which images you would like to have posted. Posting a trail is actually a bit tedious.

In order to post a trail, you’ll need to hit that FAB, and once you select the images, you’ll need to create choose a cover image. Now, in order to even post the trail, you’ll need to sign in with your Google account, so that you can attach your Google Drive account. We aren’t exactly sure why this is the case, however, it’s just another step that needs to be taken for posting simple images.

There are a lot of steps that need to be taken just to post a simple Trail, so it’s a little off-putting, but once you get used to the process, it’s just a matter of tapping a few times. Not as fast as Instagram or Facebook, but hey, it’s another way to share your favorite images with folks on the interwebs.

Tribeway also includes the ability to chat and/or call your contacts. It’s like having Facebook Messenger built into the Facebook app again. Simply tap a contact, and open up the conversation. There’s no cost associated with the messaging service, so this is another alternative to something like Telegram or WhatsApp.

What We Like

  • Easy to navigate interface
  • Trails are laid out in an attractive fashion
  • Messaging is built-in and doesn’t require any extra downloads

And Not So Much

  • Too many taps to share a single image
  • Not many people using Tribeway
  • Doesn’t do anything that isn’t already available elsewhere

Overall, Tribeway is just another social network, and although it’s not as intuitive as others, Tribeway may be something worth considering. If you’re tired of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Google+, and want to give something else a shot, Tribeway is deserving of a look or two. However, remember that you can’t sign up without a Google+ or Facebook account, and chances are, none of your friends are on there. So you’ll need to invite them before anything else.

If you’re interested in Tribeway, drop us a line and let us know. We love connecting with our readers, so let us know if you’re using it, and we’ll definitely do some connecting.

Facebook is launching Search FYI for searching public content all across the site

Facebook Search FYIFacebook has launched a new tool called Search FYI that indexes every piece of public content on the social media site. This means that when you’re searching Facebook, you’ll able to find posts from your friends and family, as well as public conversations people are having.

Search FYI also offers up personalized suggestions as you type, pretty similar to Google’s approach to web searching. These results are also time sensitive, so you should start seeing relevant news stories to whatever is currently happening. Combine that with the indexed public information, and you’ve got a pretty powerful tool for staying on top of current events and opinions.

You can expect to see the new search tools on Android and the desktop site soon.

Update Facebook on iOS now to keep it from draining your battery

Facebook users on iOS have had a sneaking suspicion that the app was starting to misbehave, to the detriment of their phone’s battery life. After saying it was looking into the issue, Facebook has now confirmed the problem and pushed out an update to the iOS app to help offer some relief. Facebook engineering manager Ari Grant said as much in a post today on (where else) Facebook, saying that the company “found a few key issues and have identified additional improvements, some of which are in the version of the app that was released today.” While there’s more Facebook says it can do to lessen battery draing, updating the app today should provide some immediate relief.
