Deal: Pick up a refurbished Chromecast for only $20 from Groupon

If you’ve been putting off buying a Chromecast dongle, now may be your chance to score one for cheap. Groupon is offering a manufacturer refurbished Google Chromecast for just $20, which is $15 off the normal retail price.
Even though it would be nice to have a brand new Chromecast, refurbished products aren’t bad options in the slightest. Each and every faulty product is sent back to get repaired and checked out for any more defects, so these products are approved by Google (or at least Chromecast technicians) before they’re sent out again. Additionally, you’ll still get a one-year warranty with the refurbished model, so there’s no need to worry.

For 35 dollars, you can pick up Google’s Chromecast to play video and music through your TV. Nothing special required other than a smartphone or tablet, the Chromecast is just a dongle that plugs directly into your HDMI port on your TV.
In keeping up with the competition, Roku, Apple TV, Fire, Google added another round of compatible apps you can stream to your TV. Included in that group is TED, if you need inspiration to change the world, and the Pac-12 network which brings coverage of 30 sports including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, gymnastics and more.
Into music? Jam out with Qello Concerts to enjoy full-length concerts from the likes of Rolling Stones, Nirvana, and others. Chromecast owners can sign up to try a 1-month free all access pass to view concerts.

Slacker Radio finally gets Chromecast support
Well it’s about time!!! Google just announced a few new apps that now have Chromecast support, but for whatever reason, they didn’t mention Slacker Radio. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the update this morning with Chromecast support. This is long overdue for one of the top music streaming apps, but I guess it’s better late than never right? Does this mean Android TV support is coming soon?
On top of Chromecast support, Slacker has added an all new “Today on Slacker” section filled with recommendations and news that’s tailor-made for your tastes and interests. They also added presets for instant access to your favorite stations. Lastly, Verizon customers can easily find Tones with the new Tones Search.

Almightree: The Last Dreamer is a 3D platformer game with impressive, colorful visuals, a fun story line, and challenging game play. You play as a hero who is trying to save a world that is crumbling by the minute. It’s a lot of fun but doesn’t work on devices that use ART although we imagine that issue is temporary.

Alphadia Genesis 2
[Price: $4.99 with in app purchases on sale ($9.99 usually)]
Alphadia Genesis 2 is the latest in the Alphadia series from Kemco Games. It is an RPG title that features a long and decent story, job classes, decent graphics, and a unique UI experience for a game. There are a few bugs here and there so be sure to test it inside of the refund time!

Drupe is a kind of messaging app where you can browse your contracts and message any one of them you want using your preferred messaging service. That means you can get a hold of one person on Facebook Messenger and another on Hangouts, all from one app. It’s definitely interesting if you use multiple messaging platforms and free to use.

Dungeon Hunter 5
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Dungeon Hunter 5 is the latest iteration of the Dungeon Hunger series from Gameloft. It continues where Dungeon Hunter 4 left off and includes improved graphics, a new story line to play through, and some online player mechanics. Final Fantasy Record Keeper
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Final Fantasy Record Keeper is a dual effort between DeNA and Square Enix. The game has enough nostalgia to where any Final Fantasy fan can feel welcome. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a horror game series that took Android by storm in 2014. The third in the series was released in March to positive reviews from both reviewers and users. It’s inexpensive with no in-app purchases and it’s truly a creepy experience. It can’t hurt to pick up this one.

King of Thieves
[Price: Free with in-app purcahses]
King of Thieves is a time-waster out of ZeptoLab, makers of the famous Cut the Rope series. In this game, you build a base to protect your gold, then you go and raid other people for theirs. Unlike most games with this dynamic, you’ll be attacking people using platformer game mechanics. It’s free to play and good for adults and kids.

Motion Tennis Cast
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Motion Tennis Cast is a unique game that uses a Google Chromecast to let you play tennis on your TV screen similar to a Nintendo Wii game. This is definitely one of the most interesting mobile games we’ve seen in a long time. If you have a Chromecast, you should definitely try it out.

Nuzzel: News From Your Friends
[Price: Free]
Nuzzel is an application that helps you keep track of what news your friends read. It sounds creepy but they mean well. It’s a way to find news and topics based on the stuff your friends are reading. Google’s Nexus Player is finally available to pre-order in the UK
While Google’s Nexus Player has been available in the states for a while now, those of us across the pond have waited patiently to get our grubby little hands on one. Finally, it appears that our wait is about to end thanks to Amazon(UK).
Amazon (UK) have put up a pre-order page for the Asus built Nexus Player, with a price tag of £79 ($119) that includes free shipping. According to the listing, Amazon will ship the Nexus Player after the device is released on March 26th. The £79 ($119) price tag gets you the remote and the player, with the added bonus that the Nexus Player is in the process of being updated to Android 5.1. If you aren’t sure what the Nexus Player is all about, we have a brief refresher on its capabilities below:
- Googlecast ready – Cast your favourite entertainment apps such as Plex, Netflix or YouTube, etc. from your Android or iOS device, Mac, Windows computer or Chromebook straight to your TV
- Content is synchronised between devices, meaning that you can start watching your favourite program on your TV and finish watching on your tablet without missing a beat.
- You can search for content by pressing the microphone button and saying the name of the content you want to watch, the Nexus Player will do the searching for you.
The £79 price tag matches the pricing of Amazon’s Fire TV offering while carrying the usual price increase UK dwellers see when compared to the US price. This is the pre-order price though, and it might not be the last price on march 26th when it is released for shipping. What do you think? Is £79 too much? Did you lose patience and buy the Fire TV or have you been waiting patiently for the Nexus Player to arrive in the UK? Let us know in the comments below or at our forums.

Daily Roundup: Google manipulated search results, Windows 10 upgrades for pirates and more!
Happy Friday, readers! In today’s edition of the Daily Roundup, you can read about an FTC report that revealed how Google manipulated its search results, Microsoft clarified its Windows 10 upgrade policy for pirated copies and what Popcorn Time is doing to prevent a shutdown. Get the details on these stories and more below.
FTC report reveals how Google manipulated its search results
A few years ago, the FTC decided not to pursue an antitrust lawsuit against Google despite finding that its search algorithm really was biased. Now, we finally know the details of that lengthy investigation, thanks to a report written by FTC staffers that recently surfaced due to an open-records request. According to the 160-page report, the employees found evidence that Mountain View was demoting its competitors and placing its own services on top of search results lists, even if they weren’t as helpful.
Microsoft clarifies Windows 10 upgrade process for pirated copies
Yesterday, we heard that Microsoft planned to give people with pirated copies of its software a free way to upgrade to Windows 10. According to Reuters, Microsoft’s goal with this plan was to combat piracy in China, though the idea was to expand said offer beyond that country. Well, as it turns out, it won’t be that simple — and, frankly, is anyone really surprised?
Movie piracy app Popcorn Time thinks it can thwart a shutdown
About a year after Popcorn Time’s death and resurrection show, comes news that the app is taking even more of the legwork out of watching pirated movies online. To further stretch the meaning of “legal,” the service is moving to a peer-to-peer streaming system so that its user base (which is apparently growing by 100,000 downloads per day) hosts the requisite data, according to Wired.
This personal flamethrower is somehow legal in 49 states
The XM42 from Ion Productions is every pyromaniac’s dream come true: a personal, portable flamethrower that’s (amazingly still) legal everywhere except California. You’ll be able to get your own flame on for as little as $700 when the company launches its IndieGoGo campaign on March 23rd.
Google hopes these offers make you want a Chromecast
Google isn’t just using Chromecast Offers to reward existing users, the company’s also loading it with freebies in an effort to more households to get one. For instance, if you buy a Chromecast from March 20th to April 19th, you’ll get $80 worth of rewards. Namely, three months of subscription to Play Music, one month of Qello Concerts, three months of DramaFever, three months of Sesame Street GO and a free movie rental from Play Movies.
Total solar eclipse coincides with supermoon and spring equinox
The end is nigh, Engadget readers: a triumvirate of celestial events is happening simultaneously. Okay, that might be a bit of an overstatement, but until we hit the other side of today’s supermoon, spring equinox (yay!) and total solar eclipse, we just won’t know. As The Wall Street Journal tells it, this sort of thing is “extremely unusual.” Total solar eclipses — where the moon plays middleman and blocks the sun from our view — happen about once every year-and-a-half. Supermoons and the equinox? A handful of times per year and once annually, respectively.
You can buy your own ‘Tron’ light cycle (if you’ve got 40 grand)
If you’ve ever watched Tron: Legacy and wished that you could own your own light cycle, then May 2nd could be your only chance. Car collectors the Andrews Family is selling the bulk of its vehicle haul that includes a custom replica of the two-wheeler from the film.

Google offering new promotions with Chromecast purchases
Google’s Chromecast has been one of the more successful pieces of hardware the company released, combining a low price with ease of use for buyers who want to use their flat screen TVs for more than traditional television. Since the release of Chromecast, others have jumped into the market or revised their products with similar features and many online services have worked to take advantage of casting capabilities. Although the low price is a key selling point, some potential buyers are still looking for something more to tip the scales in favor of a Chromecast purchase, so Google has announced some new promotions to that end.
Google has launched some new offers for Chromecast buyers in the market now, with most of the offers expiring in mid-April. Buyers can get 30 days of Qello HD concerts for free, a free Google Play movie rental, three months of Sesame Street Go, and three months of access to DramaFever. These are all in addition to 90 days of free access to Google Play Music, an offer that has been in place for a while now. Google’s offer of a $6 Google Play credit is still active for a couple days as well.
Google does specify that a Chromecast has to not only be purchased, but in most cases it has to be setup as well, to take advantage of the promotional offers. For more details and all the fine print, check the source link below.
