Buy a BlackBerry phone and get a free case & dock

Have you been looking into buying a BlackBerry phone? Normally we would advice against it, but now that the BlackBerry Priv is in the picture we can say there is definitely a reason to go with the company that once owned the smartphone market. And this holiday season BlackBerry is getting especially generous with those of you who do purchase a handset from them.

From now until January 5th at 10 AM EST, customers buying a smartphone from ShopBlackBerry.com will get up to $95 worth of accessories, in the form of a case and a dock (otherwise known as a “sync pod”).

Of course, this offer does include the BlackBerry Priv, but if those who purchase a Leap, Classic, Passport or Passport Silver Edition will also get this holiday treat. In addition, both Passport versions are getting discounted down to $459 and $499, accordingly.

Need an excuse to buy that new BlackBerry Priv? I say this is by far the best one, so make sure you make your purchase before January 5th and enjoy your freebies. The Priv is by far the most expensive BlackBerry phone at $699, but it’s one hell of a handset and competes with the best of the best.
Who’s signing up for one?
AT&T pushing first stability update to the BlackBerry Priv
BlackBerry Priv owners on AT&T will be excited to hear that the first update for the handset is on its way. The update, originally pushed to the unlocked device on December 1, will bring a variety of stability enhancements, including security fixes, camera improvements, and more.
Here’s what you can expect to see:
- An improved camera: We’ve implemented a number of tweaks that improve the speed of our camera app, and re-tuned it for better low-light image quality.
- Better performance: We’ve also tweaked the PRIV’s software to improve overall system performance
- Improved stability: The update further includes a number of adjustments designed to improve device reliability and reduce instances of crashing and freezing.
- Enhanced security: Lastly, the release includes December’s security patches – rest easy knowing your device is protected against the latest Android security threats.
There have been some other changes that are more publicly available as well. Users will find improvements to many BlackBerry apps via the Play Store, including BlackBerry Keyboard, BlackBerry Hub, BlackBerry Camera, and DTEK by BlackBerry.
The update being pushed to the device is a whopping 475MB in size. If you haven’t gotten it yet, be sure to navigate over to About Phone in the Priv’s Settings to check for the new update manually.

AT&T pushes BlackBerry Priv update with improved camera, performance and more

We often see a first software update like a 1-year birthday. We make a big deal about it, but it’s usually for no real reason, as these tend to offer very little improvements and chances are you won’t really enjoy it that much. The first BlackBerry Priv update has just hit unlocked devices over a week ago, but as we know, carrier subscribers usually have to wait a bit more to get anything.
See also: BlackBerry Priv review
It turns out BlackBerry Priv users on AT&T didn’t have to wait too long, though. The carrier has just started pushing out the first OTA update to the BlackBerry Priv. Weighing in at about 475 MB, it is certainly not as tiny as we would expect an initial update to be. And it isn’t; this does add a few convenient improvements.

The update seems to be nearly identical to what unlocked users got. Camera improvements should make taking a picture faster, and quality is improved by all the photo processing tweaks. Overall system stability and performance should also be superior after a few squished bugs. And finally, BlackBerry has also improved security by adding the latest available patches. This is, after all, a security-focused smartphone, right?

This OTA update is not the only treat you have lined up, though. Plenty of BlackBerry apps are also getting a handy update in the Google Play Store. The Keyboard, Hub, Contacts and DTEK apps are all getting added support and their fair share of improvements.

AT&T BlackBerry Priv users should already start seeing those update notifications, so go check your phone if you haven’t updated it yet. As always, keep in mind these updates usually roll out in stages, so you may not see yours coming in yet. Just sit tight and be patient!

Kantar: iOS Adoption Rises in China as Android Grows in U.S. and Europe
Kantar Worldpanel has released new smartphone operating system market share data for the third calendar quarter of 2015, providing a regional breakdown of Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and other mobile platform adoption in the U.S., Europe, China, Japan and elsewhere during the three-month period ending October.

In the U.S. market, Android led the third quarter with 62.8% market share, compared to 33.6% for iOS. The U.S. smartphone market continues to be virtually a two-horse race between Apple and Google, with iOS and Android combining for 96.4% market share in the October quarter. Windows Phone was a distant third place with just 2.7% market share.
“With 33.6% of the U.S. smartphone market, Apple’s share remained down year-over-year, but up quarter-over-quarter, as iPhone 6s became the third best-selling smartphone,” Milanesi added. “Samsung retained its leading position in the U.S. smartphone market and, for the first time in 2015, the South Korean brand was able to show year-on-year growth.”
Android continued to have the highest market share among mobile platforms worldwide, experiencing 1.6% year-over-year growth in Europe’s big five markets — United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. iOS adoption grew in China and Japan by 7% and 3.5% respectively compared to the year-ago quarter.
http://www.kantarworldpanel.com/global/smartphone-os-market-share/
Kantar Worldpanel data shows the iPhone 6s accounted for 24% of all iPhones sold in the U.S. in the three months ending October, compared to 33% for the iPhone 6 in 2014, and 22% for the iPhone 5s in 2013. Kantar says “overall volumes are pretty much identical to what was sold in 2013, while down 25% from 2014’s sales.”
Kantar Worldpanel’s latest data is also available in chart format for those that cannot view the embedded map above.

BlackBerry to announce its total Priv sales on December 18
December 18 may be the day we figure out whether BlackBerry hit a home-run with its Priv handset or had a major flop.
From our perspective, many see the BlackBerry Priv as a game changer. It has a unique design, useful features, a great display and is one of the most secure Android handsets out there. Over the course of its selling period, the Priv was able to sell in seven different countries including Canada, the United States, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Up until this point, there has been no indication on how many units have actually been sold. This could be a make or break for BlackBerry, and will be a major turning point for the company’s mobile division whichever way it goes. The company is also said to announce its total third quarter financial results.
So, how many units do you think BlackBerry managed to sell? Feel free to leave your prediction down in the comments.

BlackBerry Priv receives its first update, includes camera tweaks and 16:9 photos

The BlackBerry Priv had just started receiving its first software update, which makes some adjustments to the phone’s camera app along with productivity and security improvements. BlackBerry had committed itself to monthly security updates for the Priv and is sticking to its word.
The update weighs in at a hefty 475MB, but there are a number of notable changes included. The camera app has seen a few tweaks and should now operate much faster. BlackBerry has even adjusted the camera’s processing to improve image quality in low light situations and 16:9 photo support has been patched in as well.
Overall system performance and stability have also received a tune-up. BlackBerry has crushed a number of bugs that would lead the phone to crash or freeze and also claims to have improved the handset’s performance. Finally, the release includes December’s security patches to protect users against the latest Android vulnerabilities. A must have for a device promising top notch security.

BlackBerry is also lining up updates for some of its Android apps. The Keyboard app will soon have improved language support and new emojis, there’s WhatsApp support coming the Hub & Contacts, and the DTEK app will have a notification options to alert users when apps checks into user info. These updates will be available from December 14th through the Play Store.
The Priv’s update is already rolling out over-the-air this week for customers who bought the phone through ShopBlackBerry (unlocked models), while carrier branded smartphones should begin to see a notification appear sometime after December 7th. You can always force a manual check by heading over to Settings -> About -> System Updates.
10 Android phones you should consider for AT&T (December 2015)
It’s the most wonderful time of the year – to buy a smartphone. With Black Friday behind us and the holiday shopping season off and running, it’s the time of year where many consider a new handset. If you’re a seasoned smartphone owner, picking out an upgrade is a simple process. But, for some folks, the idea of purchasing a new handset generates a touch of anxiety.
Which is the newest phone? What is the best phone? Which is the one that’s going to give me exactly what I need? We’re here to help you dig through the clutter.
We’ve put together a list of the top 10 Android smartphones you should consider for AT&T this December. Here, in no particular order, are ten Android handsets that you should consider for AT&T if you’re currently contemplating a new device.
LG G Flex 2
Introduced early in the year, this phone was among the first to boast a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor. It’s powerful enough to contend with most Androids and features a 13-megapixel rear camera with laser focus and optical image stabilization. What it also offers, is a self-healing protective coating, which means your keys and general wear won’t ruin the finish. Also, the phone is curved in multiple ways and allows for one of the most comfortable experiences around.
LG V10
The newest phone of the bunch, this LG features two displays. Indeed, there is the 5.7-inch quad HD screen which looks gorgeous on its own. However, up at the top you will find a small secondary display which offers quick access to favourite contacts, apps, media player buttons , or an at-a-glance view of your schedule.
But, as if that were not enough, you will also find 64 gigabytes of internal storage with a microSD card that allows for another 200GB of space. The removable 3,000mAh battery is more than enough to get you a day or two of life. The rear offers up a 16-megapixel camera while the front houses a pair of 5-megapixel shooters. One works for close-ups while the other has a wide angle lens for group shots.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5
The fifth generation of Samsung’s plus-sized smartphone experience boasts a gorgeous metal and glass design. The S Pen digital stylus is smarter than ever and works without even powering on the display. Up from previous models, storage options are now 32GB and 64GB. The battery, which comes in at a commendable 3000mAh capacity, allows for fast charging, wireless charging, and even fast wireless charging.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 at Amazon
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+
An almost identical sibling to the aforementioned Galaxy Note 5, this one trades out the stylus for the dual curved display. If you don’t need to jot down notes or mark up documents, consider grabbing the more sexy counterpart.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ at AT&T
BlackBerry Priv
The newest of the bunch, this is also the first BlackBerry handset to run Android out of the box. Not only is this one big and powerful, but it’s also extra secure, too. Standout features include an 19-megapixel rear camera and 3410mAh battery. Oh, and did we mention the Priv also has a physical keyboard? Indeed, tucked under the gorgeous 5.4-inch curved display is a 4-row QWERTY keyboard. Blast through emails and messages without breaking a sweat. It’s 2015 and once again it’s cool to own a BlackBerry.
Samsung Galaxy S6
Announced in the spring, it’s hard to beat the annual Samsung flagship smartphone. The 5.1-inch Quad HD screen is a stunner and feels oh-so-right in our hands and the premium design includes glass and metal. It’s the first Galaxy S model we’ve wanted to coddle and protect in a long time. It doesn’t hurt that it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop (with an expected 6.0 update), comes with at least 32GB storage, and has 3GB RAM to boost performance.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Active
Take the 2015 flagship smartphone and add in water and dust resistance with shock resistance and you end up with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. Still present are the 5.1-inch display, 16-megapixel camera, and octa-core processor; however, the device greatly benefits with the addition of a 3500mAh battery. In short, this is a tremendous phone that’s built to last all day and can take just about anything you will throw its way.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Active at AT&T
LG G4
LG continues to impress with a steady stream of flagship models that demand attention. We long ago fell in love with the rear button layout and this year’s version has one of the best camera experiences we’ve ever seen on a smartphone. The specs are top-notch and the screen is a real looker.
HTC One A9
As the only HTC model on this list, we’re big fans of the new design cues and direction. It’s not necessarily a powerful smartphone, but it’s more than enough for first time buyers with plenty left over. It’s the first non-Nexus handset to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow and enjoys features such as Doze, Android Pay, and Android on Tap. For the first time in a few years we are excited about HTC again and can’t recommend this phone enough for its target demographic. The 5-inch screen feels terrific in hand and the fingerprint scanner is highly responsive. Check out our review of the HTC One A9.
HTC One A9 (unlocked) at Amazon
Motorola Moto X (2nd Generation)
The Moto X (2nd Generation) doesn’t have a ton of AT&T customization which means it’s closer to a stock Android experience than most other phones. What is added by Motorola, however, is worth it and only adds to the phone’s value. It’s a little over a year old now, sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your attention. If you’re looking for a great Android handset that won’t break the bank, you’ll be wise to consider this one.
