Wide list of BlackBerry apps get published on Google Play
BlackBerry is getting ready to go near full-time Android. With pre-orders already being up in some countries/carriers for the Priv, BlackBerry seems to be in its final stages for its transition to Android.
Throughout the day you may have come across some new BlackBerry branded applications in the Play Store. In case you’re wondering, these are the real deal. BlackBerry listed several apps today including a BlackBerry Launcher, BlackBerry Camera, BlackBerry Password, BlackBerry Keyboard, DTEK, BlackBerry Services and exFAT. One could now assume that BlackBerry has finished its final stage in terms of software and is moving forward with its big ecosystem transition. However, not all apps can be downloaded from any Android device, so are limited to what we assume for now is just the Priv handset. If you want to take a look at what is available, you can search BlackBerry Limited on the Play Store to find them.
All that BlackBerry has done could soon pay off, however it also has the chance to backfire. It’ll be interesting to see if the market has a response to this major change. What do you think? Is it too little too late?

Android Authority this week – October 25, 2015

Android fans, HTC was in the spotlight this week, though not just for good reasons. The Taiwanese company’s new A9 looks great, but it’s a little too familiar for some tastes. In other news, we heard a credible rumor about the release of the Galaxy S7; we brought you our initial impressions of the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P; Google released a couple of big updates; the BlackBerry Priv finally went up for pre-order; YouTube Red and YouTube Music launched; we got another look at the Droid Turbo; and Samsung launched the Galaxy On5 and On7.

Android fans, on October 21, 2015, the future has finally arrived. We don’t have hoverboards just yet, but what we carry in our pockets every day is just as amazing. As Doc Brown himself put it, the “future” is different from what we all thought, but that’s a good thing. When it comes to mobile technology, Nirave did a good job highlighting the absolutely massive leaps that the phone industry made in just one decade. Think about that the next time you feel the urge to complain about your device. And think about where we will be ten years from now.
The results of our blind camera shootout between the Xperia Z5, Galaxy Note 5, LG G4, and the iPhone 6S has caused a huge stir. Yes, the iPhone 6S won on an Android site, and the Apple blogosphere rejoiced. For us, the takeaway here is that Apple is still better at giving most users what they actually want from their cameras, and that should be food for thought for the Android OEMs that are still too fixated on raw specs. The other takeaway? Expect more camera shootouts in the future!
This Halloween, share your data horror story and stand to win a Nexus 6P, Galaxy Note 5, or Xperia Z5 from our friends at Opera. Enter the giveaway here!

Canada’s WIND Mobile will sell the BlackBerry Priv
Another carrier in Canada, where BlackBerry is headquartered, has announced that the new Priv will be sold online and through its retail stores at a later date.
WIND Mobile, Canada’s fourth largest carrier, launched a product listing on its site indicating that BlackBerry’s Priv is “coming soon.” This carrier joins Rogers and Telus as those in BlackBerry’s home country planning to offer its very important piece of hardware to customers. And BlackBerry needs all the carrier support it can get if the company wants to remain in the hardware business in the future. BlackBerry is banking on its physical keyboard and top-of-the-line security to attract buyers.
The Priv costs CA$899 in Canada, but WIND Mobile doesn’t have the price labeled there at this time.
This is right on the heels of BlackBerry accepting pre-orders for the Priv in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

The BlackBerry Priv is available for pre-order, priced at $699 USD
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The BlackBerry Priv has been one of the more interesting stories of the year, no matter your perspective on BlackBerry as a company. Its first Android smartphone does things a little differently, a little more secure, and now we know that it does things a little more expensively too. Yes, the BlackBerry Priv is available for pre-order now in the US, Canada and the UK, and the one resounding piece of news is that it’s not exactly a cheap device – in the US, you’ll need to pay $699 USD, in Canada, $899 CAD and in the UK, £559 (equivalent to $857 USD). I’m not going to even ask what price they ask for in Australia…
BlackBerry CEO John Chen said in his statement this morning:
“BlackBerry is a new company. We have new life. And we plan to continue to surprise our customers and the industry. This is just the latest move along that path.”
The pricing of the BlackBerry Priv is pretty much exactly where we expected a super-secure smartphone to be priced – but somehow, we’re still a little surprised given BlackBerry’s precarious position in the smartphone industry. BlackBerry says that the availability of the Priv is going to continue globally as time goes on – those of you who can pre-order now will start receiving their devices on November 6th.

You can now pre-order the Blackberry PRIV
Starting today, Blackberry’s newest flagship phone is available to pre-order if you’re in the US, Canada or the UK. Pricing for the device for Canadians is $899 CDN, $699 in the US and £559 incl for the UK.
The PRIV is Blackbery’s first Android phone to hit the market and has grabbed quite a bit of attention with the high-end hardware offered and the near-stock Android experience.
“The device offers unique tools and features – like DTEKTM, our exclusive warning system app that lets you know when your privacy could be at risk so you can take action to improve it – as well as an elegant, slim design with a slide-out physical keyboard, 5.4-inch dual-curved screen and a powerful 18MP camera. And of course, access to the Google Play™ store to easily download all the apps you want.
PRIV will be the solution for smartphone users who are learning daily of the lack of privacy they have on their current devices. PRIV will be the answer for former BlackBerry users who miss the physical keyboard but want more apps. And we’re responding to current – and prospective – BlackBerry users who need it all: choice, innovation, security, privacy and productivity.”
While the device is not as affordable as some of the recent flagship announcements this year, Blackberry has made very few compromises with it in terms of hardware and software offered and the inclusion of a slide-out physical keyboard which is something we haven’t seen in quite some time.

BlackBerry’s Priv will cost you $699
BlackBerry has opened-up pre-orders for its first ever Android smartphone, the curved-screen slider that’s better known as the Priv. The move comes just a day after the spec list was leaked on the company’s site, although the price that was included in the listing turned out to be a red herring. In fact, American BlackBerry fans will be able to pre-order the device for $699 starting from today, with delivery expected on November 6th. Canadians, meanwhile, can plonk down $899 CDN to get the device in their home country, while UK users are expected to stump-up £559 ($857) for the same deal.

BlackBerry opens up pre-orders for the Priv, ships November 6th for $699
The wait for BlackBerry’s upcoming slider smartphone is almost over, as the company has opened up pre-orders for the device on their website. The good news is that we’re seeing a November 6th launch date for the Priv, which isn’t too far off. The bad news? BlackBerry’s asking a lot of money for it.
The Priv runs a hefty $699 with 32 GB of storage, which is about $50 more than what most flagship devices typically launch at in the US. It’s not significantly more expensive, and it’s not the first time we’ve seen phones ask a premium for extra features (think Samsung’s very expensive Galaxy Note line) and in this case, BlackBerry thinks that sliding keyboard and the extra security and privacy features are worth a little extra cash up front, which makes sense.
There’s a little more bad news, depending on what carrier you’re on. The listing page explicitly states that the phone won’t work on Verizon, Sprint, or US Cellular, so you’re stuck with GSM carriers if you want BlackBerry’s latest. We’ll probably see carrier-specific versions soon enough, but the unlocked version won’t be able to hop around on CDMA carriers.
Anybody going to lock in a preorder for the Priv?

BlackBerry might have leaked the Priv’s specs and release date (update: confirmed)
BlackBerry’s been drip-feeding data about its first Android phone for the last few weeks, but it looks as if someone’s spilled the rest of the beans a little bit early. An eagle-eyed member of the Crackberry forums found a page on the firm’s website that shared the spec list and price for the US and Canadian version of the device. If accurate, then we know that the Priv is packing a fair bit of power beneath the hood, but has a listed price of $749. There’s no indication if that figure is for the US or Canada — but the page does reference the (GSM) handset not working on American CDMA networks like Verizon and Sprint. You’ll also spot that the device is marked for release on November 16th, so we won’t have long to find out if all of this is true or not.
Performance-wise, the Priv is packing a 1.8Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage and a microSD card slot that’ll take up to 2TB. Much was made of the Priv’s curved screen, and we know that it’s a 5.4-inch plastic AMOLED with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution (540 DPI) that can handle styluses and gloves. The physical keyboard measures 37mm high by 77.2mm wide, and there’s a 3,410mAh battery that’s rated for 22.5 hours of use tucked inside.
We knew that the Priv would come with an 18-megapixel camera, but now believe that it’ll come with OIS,a six-element f/2.2 lens and will record 4K video at 30 frames per second. The selfie cam up front is 2-megapixel with a f/2.8 lens and 720p video recording, and will also take panoramas with your mug in the middle of it. Plenty of BlackBerry devices come with NFC, but its inclusion here does raise the potential that the Priv could support Android Pay at some point.
All of this comes from a single source on a fan forum, so we can’t take it as gospel truth, but even with a tinfoil hat, it all sounds plausible. We hope that the pricing is for Canada rather than the US, since that would make the cost here around $570, putting it in the same rough ballpark as the $599 charged for the Passport on launch.
Update: Another tipster spotted the phone up for pre-order on UK retailer Carphone Warehouse, the specs listed match what we have here, so it’s confirmed. We also learn the (hefty) £580 SIM-free price tag.

Blackberry has been slowly revealing the various features of its first Android-powered smartphone, the Priv, and everyone seems to be excited about it so far. Blackberry has managed to differentiate the Priv with its physical keyboard, slider design and a secure, Android experience. Unlike most brands that hire out huge halls to announce a new handset, BlackBerry seems to be content with simply making the Priv available to pre-order, yesterday from the Canadian carrier, Rogers, and today in the UK via Carphone Warehouse.

Official BlackBerry Priv page popped up, specs outted
It appears that BlackBerry accidentally let its official Priv listing go live. Various sources are reporting that they spotted the page on BlackBerry’s website moments before it was taken down. Fortunately for those who are excited about the phone, we now have all the specs.
BlackBerry had already given us some official tidbits in the Priv’s pre-registration page. There, it outted the 5.4″ dual-curved screen, 3,410 mAh battery, and Schneider-Kreuznach camera.
Now we know that the Snapdragon 808 chipset will power the Priv, with 3GB of RAM. That screen is 5.43″, to be exact, with a QHD resolution. The display uses a Plastic AMOLED panel (protected by Gorilla Glass 4) and has a High Brightness Mode for outdoor usage.
The Schneider-Kreuznach label on the camera won’t mean much to most people, but we know now that the main shooter will be an 18MP module, with OIS and Phase-Detection Autofocus (PDAF). It has a “6-element” f/2.2 aperture. The front camera is only 2MP (f/2.8), but has a large 1.75um pixel size to help with low-light shots.
Word is going around that the Priv will run a whopping $750 unlocked. That is a pretty steep asking price for a struggling company. The network specs only show support for AT&T and T-Mobile (GSM frequencies), but I wouldn’t freak out just yet if you’re on Verizon or Sprint. Wait until we hear the entire deal.
It is said that the Priv will begin shipping in the US on November 16th. Pre-orders are expected, which should be happening soon. What do you think, is this your next phone?
