AT&T will be the first US carrier to offer Blackberry’s Priv

AT&T will begin carrying the Blackberry Priv on November 6th, the company announced on Monday. The phone, which runs Android’s Lollipop OS and features a slide-out physical keyboard, will be available that Friday in both AT&T retail outlets and the company’s website. Specs for the Priv leaked late last month, though the price listed there has since been corrected to an even $700 if you buy it unlocked.

BlackBerry Priv now up for pre-order at B&H Photo

blackberry_priv_code_mobile_recode

The latest retailer to list the BlackBerry Priv for pre-order is B&H Photo. The product page says the Priv is expected to be available on November 20, but does not have a time frame for actually shipping the device just yet.

The Priv will cost interested buyers $699, not including shipping and taxes. BlackBerry and a variety of Canadian and UK-based outlets have also listed the Priv, but so far, it looks like buying the device straight from BlackBerry will get you the Priv much faster than other options.

As a quick refresher, here’s what the specifications look like in BlackBerry’s latest:

  • 5.4-Inch dual-curved display with 1440 x 2560 resolution
  • Slide-out keyboard
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core (2 x cores @ 1.8GHz + 4 x cores @ 1.44GHz)
  • Adreno 418 GPU
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB Internal storage
  • MicroSD card support (up to 2TB)
  • DTEK privacy warning system
  • 18MP Schneider-Kreuznach rear camera with OIS
  • 2MP Front camera
  • Battery: 3,410mAh
  • Android 5.1.1

The BlackBerry Priv is a hard sell at $699, but the company has high hopes for it. As far as specifications go, the Priv is without a doubt a premium device that can easily compete with other big players in the market. However, $699 is difficult to swallow all at once, especially with no subsidies available. If BlackBerry doesn’t sell enough, its hardware business could be doomed as the company looks to other avenues for revenue.

What’re your thoughts on the Priv?

BlackBerry Priv gets first unboxing courtesy of Carphone Warehouse

It’s hard to believe this day has finally arrived: once a far-flung pipe dream, then a realistic rumor, and now an undeniable unboxing, BlackBerry has finally made an Android phone. The Priv, originally referred to as the Venice, is set to ship on November 6th for customers in the USA. On the other side of the pond however, UK retalier Carphone Warehouse has received a release unit and unboxed it for all to behold:

The segment begins with a quick look at the box, with the lovely lady featured in the video pointing out the packaging contains the words “Privilege” and “Privacy”. While offering an idea of how BlackBerry ultimately chose to name the phone, it is her British pronunciation of the latter word that may give some North American viewers an “a-ha” kind of revelation.

Inside the box are standard tools-of-the-trade, including the device itself, a SIM ejector tool, manuals, headphones, and a USB cable.

The video also demonstrates several unique BlackBerry features. Carried over from BB10, BlackBerry Hub is retained and can be accessed by holding down the Home button and swiping to the right. Hub is a one-stop go-to for all notifications. The Priv’s virtural keyboard allows you to “flick” word predictions into the text field by swiping up from a key,

The physical keyboard borrows from the Passport, meaning that not only is it a traditional typing device, but also allows includes trackpad functionality for navigation.

BlackBerry Calendar is demonstrated, as well as BlackBerry Search, the latter of which allows you to search both the phone and the internet and can be activated by swiping up and left from the Home button.

The video ends with a quick look at DTEK by BlackBerry, a unique app that places proper priority on privacy and allows users to fine-tune and beef-up the Priv’s security.

Wrap up

blackberry-priv-hands-on-1

The BlackBerry Priv is set to go on sale in roughly a week’s time, however the entry requirement is not for the cash-conscious: the phone is $749 unlocked. Depending on the success – of lack thereof – this may end up being the company’s swan song to the hardware market.

What do you think? Has the unboxing video made you more motivated for a potential purchase? Is the hardware just what you’ve always wanted, or does it cost too much to be considered? Leave us your comments below.

Blackberry Priv unboxing video released by Carphone Warehouse

BlackBerry_Priv_Android_smartphone (2)

Blackberry’s first Android powered smartphone, the Blackberry Priv, will be hitting consumers’ hands soon. U.K. retailer Carphone Warehouse has released an unboxing video for the device so buyers can get a better idea of what to expect from the new smartphone. The video is standard fare for an unboxing video, giving viewers a glimpse of the actual packaging and how Blackberry went about fitting everything in the box. The latter half of the video shows a little bit of how the software, especially the Blackberry specific apps, work on the device and how the physical keyboard is accessed. Blackberry appears to be following the path of Motorola in keeping Android pretty much close to stock and adding apps to the device as opposed to layering on their own user interface.

Hit the break to check out the video and let us know in the comments if you plan to give the Blackberry Priv a try.

BlackBerry Priv feature overview video gives very comprehensive preview of the smartphone

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

The BlackBerry Priv, BlackBerry‘s very first Android smartphone, has been getting plenty of airtime the last couple of weeks. While we know quite a lot about the device already, we seem to learn something new about the device with each passing day – the latest learning comes in the form of a BlackBerry Priv feature overview video that BlackBerry posted on its YouTube channel earlier this week. The video walks us through much of the Priv’s primary features and actually spends very little time harping on about the device’s privacy features – take a look for yourself:

While privacy only gets a bit of a mention in the video, we do get a look at the DTEK app which appears to be always monitoring the security status of your phone and takes a look at the permissions that each app has. Other notable new features that we have really seen before include pop-up widgets which is a quick way of getting a widget up without cluttering your homescreen up – pretty neat. BlackBerry is no doubt hoping this video changes your mind about the Priv, making it worth your $699 USD – we’re still not so sure, but we have to admit it sure does look feature packed.

First BlackBerry Priv ad wants to convince you that privacy is important

BlackBerry has been suprisingly quiet about the launch of the Priv, the company’s first Android smartphone. In fact, there still hasn’t even been a launch event for the phone. At least now we have our first official advert for the handset (above), which attempts to explain why you might want a very secure smartphone.

Clearly, BlackBerry’s additional security software and features are going to help the handset stand out from its wide range of Android competitors. The Priv’s physical keyboard and extra productivity tools may also win over some potential customers.

Other hardware details include a 5.43-inch QHD (2560×144) AMOLED display, hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a 3,410mAh battery. The phone will also come with an 18 megapixel rear camera, which features optical image stabalization and phase detection auto focus, along with a 2MP front camera and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on-board.

If you are already sold on the BlackBerry Priv, pre-orders are currently live in the US, UK and Canada, with unsubsidised prices set at USD$699, CAD$899 and £559. The phone is scheduled to ship out on November 6th.

BlackBerry Priv edges will be more productive than the edges on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

BlackBerry_Priv_Android_smartphone (2)If you love the looks of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, but hated how little function they gave, the Blackberry Priv has a surprise for you. It also features dual curved edges, but new reports are showing that they will be much more functional.

Canadian carrier Telus has leaked some documents showing a feature called Productivity Edge. It has been taken down now, but we still obtained some pictures from it showing features of what the edges can do.

The edge features seem to be somewhat similar to the S6 Edge, but expand upon it. One neat feature is the edge turns into a battery bar when charging.

An-early-look-at-BlackBery-Privs-Productivity-Edge-4Other features are swiping from the edge and getting a notes app to quickly write something down. The edges, to me, seem almost like a Note 5 and S6 Edge combined. Instead of taking out the S pen and getting a new app menu, that app menu is now built into the edges through swipe gestures.

Another cool thing we learned from the leak is if you swipe up on an app it will launch the widget if it has one. Similar to Action Launcher’s Shutters feature.

The more leaks that we see about the Priv the more interested I am in it. Wether you like it or not, BlackBerry is at least trying new things that many other Android manufactures have not.

The BlackBerry Priv has a Productivity Edge that makes the most of the curved display

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

BlackBerry‘s first Android-powered smartphone, the BlackBerry Priv, is now available for pre-order for the very handsome sum of $699 USD. While the device boasts privacy features, which is its namesake, the BlackBerry Priv has a Productivity Edge that can be used in similar fashion to the edge on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. You’ll be able to drag out a panel of apps for quick access, located close to the edge of the display to make use of the Priv’s curved display – note that unlike the S6 Edge, the actual panel isn’t curved; rather the glass above it appears to be curved.

There also appear to be a number of other interesting features that will come in handy for Priv users, including pop-up widgets, a customized recent apps menu and a charging bar that only appears on the curved edge when the device is charging and the display is off. This is likely just the tip of the iceberg, and we’re interested to see what else BlackBerry has up its sleeve – though we’re not sure we’re $699 USD interested yet.

BlackBerry Priv apps show up at Play Store ahead of phone launch

blackberry-priv-hands-on-1

I can already feel the buttons tapping and clicking below my finger tips. The BlackBerry Priv is now up for pre-order and we are expecting a November 6th release date, which is less than a couple weeks away. Many of us are excited about this phone, so it’s always good to see the company revealing new details. BlackBerry is getting ready for this epic launch and couldn’t wait to upload multiple stock apps to the Google Play Store.

This happens to be great news, as it suggests BlackBerry is following the right steps to become a successful Android smartphone manufacturer. Putting all your stock apps in the Google Play Store means you no longer have to wait for whole firmware updates just to get tiny application updates. The manufacturer can simply have them updated via the Play Store, something plenty of the larger manufacturers have adopted.

blackberry-priv-hands-on-3

That’s really the only good news about this, though. Obviously, you can’t really download these apps into any other smartphone out there right now. All you can do is take a look at them. Those who want to do that can do so by clicking through the links below.

BlackBerry Priv apps:

blackberry-priv-hands-on-5

Just in case you have been living under a rock the past months, the Priv is BlackBerry’s first Android device. Yes, it will feature one of those acclaimed BlackBerry physical keyboards. But that is not the only enticing part; the phone happens to be very promising in plenty of other aspects.

Packed inside you will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, an 18 MP rear-facing camera, a 2 MP front shooter and a hefty 3410 mAh battery.

Not bad, right? Are any of you signing up to buy one of these? Hopefully we get to play with all these apps soon enough!
