ASUS raises sales expectations to 30 million smartphones in 2015

asus zenfone 2 first look a (18 of 19)

ASUS has been ramping up its mobile strategy in the past few months, announcing cost effective products in both the smartphone and wearables markets. As the new Zenfone 2 range makes its way out around the world, ASUS has just updated its sales expectations to 30 million units for 2015.

This is a remarkable figure for a company that shipped just 10,000 units back in the first quarter of 2014. Sales expectations have been revised repeatedly this year, starting at 17 million in February, 25 million in March and now the company estimates 30 million shipments. ASUS has amassed over 10 million shipments already this year.

The recipe for ASUS’ success is likely down to the affordable nature of its hardware. Although not battling for the most premium tier, ASUS has a compelling line-up with the Zenfone 2 and Zenwatch, which both substantially undercut the price of its major competitors. The news is also a boon for Intel, which provides the CPU inside the Zenfone 2 and had been struggling to break into the smartphone market.

In an interview with the Chinese media, ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih stated that the Chinese market would account for one third of the company’s smartphone shipments for 2015, around 10 million units, suggesting strong growth from other regional markets.  In addition to the rollout in Taiwan and parts of Europe, the Zenfone 2 will be heading to Hong Kong, Russia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, India and the United States in the coming months.

That said, ASUS will be relying on the booming Chinese market as it hopes to break into the top 10 smartphone manufacturers list in 2015 and into the top five in the coming years.

ASUS Chromebit lets you convert any HDMI compatible monitor into a Chrome OS running desktop

chromebit

ASUS and Google have just unveiled the Chromebit which is essentially an HDMI dongle that looks like the Chromecast, but has a lot more functionality under the hood. Plugging this device into an HDMI capable monitor will let you experience Chrome OS just like on a Chromebook. Google also announced four new Chromebooks earlier today, including the ASUS Chromebook Flip.

Make no mistake, the Chromebit is a proper computer in the size of a pen (or even smaller). This will take on Intel’s recently launched HDMI dongle which runs Windows 8.1 out of the box and retails for $150.

This device on the other hand merely costs $99, letting you try out Google’s new Chrome OS on the cheap. The device has 16GB of internal storage underneath along with 2GB of RAM, a Rockchip RK3288 processor and a full sized USB 2.0 port. This can let you connect wired peripherals like a mouse or keyboard. Since there’s only one port here, it’s wise to use a USB hub like device which will allow you to connect multiple accessories on one slot.

It’s a pretty nifty device and will be aggressively marketed by Google and ASUS over the coming weeks. Google has made it very clear that the Chromecast will continue to sell despite the launch of the Chromebit as they cater to a different sets of users.

Google launches four new budget Chromebooks ranging up t $250

chromebookflip

Google has partnered with ASUS, Haier and Hisense to bring four new budget priced Chromebooks to the market. Prominent among these is the ASUS Chromebook Flip, which is a convertible device that can transform into a tablet or a fully functioning notebook on your call.

The Chromebook Flip comes with a 10.1 inch touchscreen display and can be rotated 360 degrees, hence the name. We must note that this tablet cannot detach itself from the keyboard, but merely flip backwards. But it’s a neat feature to have nevertheless.

ASUS Chromebook C201, the Hisense Chromebook and the Haier Chromebook 11 are pretty basic in their approach and don’t come with the bells and whistles of the Chromebook Flip. But the pricing of these devices make them very attractive propositions.

As for the hardware, all the aforementioned Chromebooks sport 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, 2GB of RAM and a Rockchip 3288 SoC. Other features include a front facing 720p camera and a total of two USB 2.0 ports.

The Chromebook Flip has been priced at $249, while the ASUS Chromebook C201 costs $169. The two Chromebooks from Haier and Hisense have been priced at $149, making them the cheapest of the lot.

Google reveals budget Chromebooks including a $249 ASUS convertible

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for some new Chromebooks. Yep, Google has just announced four new Chrome OS laptops, all of which lean toward the budget-friendly end of the spectrum. They are the ASUS Chromebook Flip, the ASUS Chromebook C201, the Hisense Chromebook and the Haier Chromebook 11 (This also comes in an educational version dubbed the 11e). Though it’s the priciest model at $249, the most notable one by far is ASUS’ Chromebook Flip. Not only is it the slimmest of the bunch with a thickness of only 15mm, it has a 10.1-inch touchscreen IPS display that can be flipped (hence the name) 360 degrees around.

I didn’t have much time to get a real feel for the Flip, but it does remind me a lot of ASUS’ other flipping laptop, the ASUS Transformer Book Flip. The Chromebook flip is very lightweight at less than two pounds and I was able to hold it with one hand quite easily. Thanks to an internal accelerometer, the screen orientation changes depending on how the laptop is positioned — as you can see in the image here, it’s rotated 180-degrees when in the upside-down teepee formation. In this converted state, the software in the Chromebook Flip is smart enough to bring up touch-centric controls like a virtual keyboard and handwriting recognition whenever you tap an empty text field. Flip it around to regular laptop mode, however, and these extra modes will disappear, as it recognizes that you now have a full keyboard at your disposal.

The Haier and the Hisense laptops, on the other hand, are decidedly less glamorous. Instead of a sleek all-metal frame, the Haier and the Hisense models are clad in utilitarian black plastic. Still, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The Hisense in particular has a pleasant pebbled texture that contributes to a firmer grip and I quite like the feel of the metal palm rest. They both have almost the same dimensions — the Hisense is 11.7 by 8.8 by 0.6 inches and weighs about 3.3 pounds while the Haier is a touch smaller at 11.4 by 8.1 by 0.71 inches and 2.54 pounds. Both have 11.6-inch screens with 1366×768 resolution and 200 nits of brightness. I wasn’t too impressed with what I saw of the displays — the colors seem washed out and rather lackluster — but for low-end budget models, they’re perfectly functional.

I was also a fan of the Haier 11e educational Chromebook. It’s a lot more durable against everyday wear and tear and is water- and spill-resistant due to tiny drainage holes in the chassis. Unlike the regular Haier Chromebook 11, the 11e has a removable battery along with a built-in handle, presumably so kids can easily carry it from class to class. ASUS’ Chromebook C201 is a bit of a mystery as I wasn’t able to handle it myself, but Google tells us it has a 11.6-inch display and the internals are about the same as the rest.

ASUS Chromebook C201

As for those internals, well, all of the above Chromebooks come equipped with a Rockchip 3288 SoC with 2GB of RAM and 16GB flash memory (eMMC). They all also have 802.11 ac WiFi, a 720p HD front-facing camera, two USB 2.0 ports, a microSD card reader, Bluetooth 4.0 and an ARM Mali 760 quad core GPU. Battery life fluctuates from model to model — the Flip promises up to 10 hours, the Hisense has 8.5, the Haier has 10 while the Chromebook C201 promises 13.

The main draw with all of these, of course, is price. The Flip will be available for $249, the C201 starts at $169, while both the Haier and the Hisense models will cost $149 each. The Flip should be out later this Spring, the C201 will be on Amazon in May, and both the Haier and Hisense models are avaiable for pre-order today. The Haier is available through Amazon while the Hisense can be purchased through Walmart.

ASUS Zenfone 2 arrives in Europe with €179 price tag

asus zenfone 2 first look a (1 of 19)

Following its launch in Asia, the ASUS Zenfone 2 is now making its way to Europe, with prices starting at just €179, ranging up to a still modest €349. The big talking point with the Zenfone 2 series is the option for a colossal 4GB or RAM, but the range has plenty more to offer too.

As we previously covered, there are a range of Zenfone 2 variants in production and three of them are heading to Europe.

The most expensive is the ZE551ML variant, which costs €349 and comes with the 4GB of RAM, a 2.3GHz Intel Atom Z3580 processor, 1080p 5.5-inch display, a 13MP rear camera, 32GB of internal memory and a 3,000mAh battery. For €249 you can grab the ZE550ML, which sports a 720p 5.5-inch display, 1.8GHz Z3560 SoC, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, with the same camera and battery as the most expensive model.

The more budget friendly option is the ZE500CL model, which features a 1.6GHz Atom Z2560 processor, a 720p 5-inch display, 2GB of RAM, 8GB storage, 8MP rear camera and a smaller 2,500mAh battery. All of the handsets feature a microSD card slot and Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

France will be the first country to receive the Zenfone 2, ahead of a wider rollout across the region. Asus France is currently offering the ZE55ML variant (the 4GB one) for €299, for a limited time only. A US store release is stated for this spring and an Indian launch date is expected on April 13th.

The third-gen ZenFone 3 to feature a fingerprint recognition sensor

ASUS_Zenfone_2_Official_76

Despite the fact that the ZenFone 2 was unveiled in early January, many are turning their attention to the ZenFone 3. Even Asus is getting antsy about the next-gen ZenFone. According to CEO Jerry Shen, Asus will release the ZenFone 3 complete with a fingerprint recognition sensor. However, from now until the point that the ZenFone 3 is released may be a long time to wait. But it’s possible we may not have to wait that long at all.

The company also revealed that we may actually see this technology in the second half of this year when the ZenFone 2 gets a facelift. Even so, the third-generation ZenFone, will feature the same tech and is expected to debut in early 2016.

So if you’re an Asus fan, you’ll be happy to know that some of Asus’ phones will be getting even more features.

ASUS is preparing an ultra-affordable Chromebook with a Rockchip processor

asus chromebookChromebooks are already incredibly affordable, but ASUS looks like they’re preparing to undercut the competition even further with a cheaper model. The ASUS C201 is listed in an education ordering brochure and mentions specs like a Rockchip processor and an 11.6″ inch screen with 4 GB of RAM, and the catalog mentions that it’s the “cheapest Chromebook ever.”

While the brochure divulged the hardware, it didn’t give a clear cut price, so there’s no telling exactly where ASUS wants to try to land this thing in terms of price points. Chromebooks routinely launch for about $199 right now, so anywhere around the $149 – $189 range would probably be a safe bet.

Maybe we’ll see it dip below $100? Not likely, but we can hope. Keep an eye out for some official news from ASUS in the coming weeks.

Rockchip toting ASUS C201 Chromebook could bring more affordable Chrome OS computing to work and school

Looks like a new ASUS Chromebook offering is on the horizon sporting a more cost-effective quad-core 1.8 GHZ Rockchip processor. ASUS ZenFone 2 video released to hype launch, expected later this month

If you have been following along the smartphone exploits of ASUS lately, you are likely as excited as we are to see the official launch of the ASUS ZenFone 2, expected later in March in the U.S. To keep the excitement going ASUS has launched a new video that does a great job of highlighting the new Android powered phone.

ASUS first introduced the ZenFone 2 alongside the ZenFone Zoom back at CES in January. “TwoFones,” as Kevin the Tech Ninja would say. The specifications list was something we were very happy to see, with a 5.5-inch HD display backed by a 64-bit Quad-Core processor, up to 4GB of RAM, up to 64GB of internal storage, a 3000mAh battery and a 13MP main shooter.

asus zenfone 2 first look a (9 of 19)

With specs like those, many expected the device to churn out a typical flagship price tag, in the $600+ range. However, ASUS has a little cost savings trick up their sleeve: their chosen processor is actually an Intel SoC, with an Imagination GPU. The end result, ASUS recently launched the ZenFone 2 in Taiwan, with the top tier unit just under $300. Downgrade to a 720p display, a slower processor, 2GB of RAM, a smaller battery and 8MP shooter for just $160.

Now that ASUS has released a teaser video for the western markets, we are hoping this means the device will soon follow. Sadly, we still have no word on when that may take place, but initial reports led us to believe later this month, we’ll have to wait and see.

What do you think of the ASUS ZenFone 2, could it be the phone for you?

ASUS: you’re out of your mind if you buy a gold Apple Watch Edition

Asus on Apple Watch Edition

As we have come to expect from Apple, its first smartwatch is priced right at the top of the market. It seems that ASUS is willing to call out the Apple Watch Edition as more than a little overpriced, and has posted a rather amusing image on Twitter to express its sentiments (above).

In case you missed the announcement, the Apple Watch Edition options begin with a retail price of $549. However, the 18K-karat or rose gold options start with a much steeper $10,000 price tag! For comparison, you can purchase the ASUS Zenwatch for a far more modest $199.99.

We rather liked the ASUS Zenwatch in our review, but it appears that the company has not managed to grab as much of the smartwatch market as its Android competitors, such as LG, Sony or Samsung, according to recent sales estiamtes. With that in mind, perhaps a more aggressive marketing campaign might be just what ASUS needs.
