128GB storage Asus Zenfone 2 appears in India

ASUS Zenfone 2-2

Just last week, pre-orders kicked off for the Asus Zenfone 2 in India. Packed with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, the Zenfone 2 is already chock-full of memory, but that hasn’t stopped Asus releasing a 128GB model for the heavy media consumper.

Appearing on FlipKart, the new Zenfone 2 model comes with 128GB of storage and retains the rest of the features present in the highest-end ZE551ML variant. That means 4GB of RAM, an Intel Atom Z3580 SoC, 13MP rear camera, and dual-SIM support complete with LTE connectivity. It’s interesting that Asus didn’t make more of an official announcement about the increased capacity, but maybe it will announce something if and when the handset arrives in new markets.

The 128GB model is not on sale quite yet, it’s just listen as “Coming Soon”. However, we know that the retail price will be Rs. 29,999 ($472), making it a fair bit more expensive than the Rs. 22,999 64GB model or the 19,999 32GB version. Don’t forget, the Zenfone 2 features a 64GB expandable microSD card slot as well, which is a cheaper alternative if you’re looking for a little more storage.

If you’re curious about what the Asus Zenfone 2 has to offer, be sure to check out our full review.

Asus ZenFone 2 launching in North America on May 18th

zenfone-2-launch-event

When the original ZenFone series launched at CES 2014, I personally was excited to see more competition in the low-end segment, believing Asus had what it took to compete with devices like the Moto G. Unfortunately, the original ZenFone lineup never made its way to the states. Thankfully, this isn’t the case for the ZenFone 2.

Asus has formally started sending out invites for a ZenFone 2 North American launch event which takes place in New York City on May 18th. While we had already heard talk about how the ZenFone 2 would make it stateside, official confirmation is always nice.

The ZenFone 2 is more than just a mid-range device, it’s a high-end flagship-like offering at a mid-range price. In our review with the 4GB RAM variant of the ZenFone 2, we couldn’t help but be impressed by how well the device performed despite a few drawbacks like some battery drain issues. Now keep in mind that while we know the 2GB variant of the ZenFone 2 is sold somewhere in the $200 to $300 price range, you can likely expect the 4GB model to cost somewhere between $300 and $400 when it arrives in North America. Of course, pricing in the US isn’t official just yet.

What do you think, anyone planning on picking up this mid-ranger with a high-end flagship punch?

ASUS starts sending out press invites for a ZenFone 2 event it’s holding in NYC on May 18

ASUS_Zenfone_2_Official_76

ASUS has just announced that it will host a ZenFone 2 event in New York City on Monday, May 18. Invites are in the process being sent out to all major technology conglomerates, requesting that they be present to witness the launch of the company’s flagship smartphone in the United States.

Just in case you need a refresher on its specifications, the ZenFone 2 packs a 5.5-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor, a Power VR G6430 GPU, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable internal storage and a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera.

Unfortunately, we have no information with regards to pricing for the handset, although ASUS did previously state that it would be an affordable smartphone that will start at just $199, but we have no confirmation of this, as of yet.  It shouldn’t be too much longer though until we find out — so be sure to check back.

ASUS_Zenfone_2_Official_76

Jerry Shen, CEO of ASUS, sat down for an interview with YugaTech and announced a plan for his company’s devices moving forward. The naming of them will follow the strategy of many, including Apple and Samsung, by using numbers. Also, new ZenFone devices will be released about every six months. The more important news from the interview is the decision to use more Qualcomm processors due to their ongoing partnership. Shen says that we should expect ZenFone devices to feature the Snapdragon 615 in the future.

Don’t expect to see the ASUS ZenWatch 2 before 2016

asus-zenwatch-official_01ASUS is preparing their highly anticipated ZenWatch 2 for release sometime “soon,” but “soon” to ASUS doesn’t mean by the end of 2015. According to CEO Jerry Shen, the watch won’t be ready for debut until 2016 at the earliest. No word on what part of 2016 he’s expecting, but I would imagine we should see it within the first few months of the year, with that being over 3/4 of a year away.

An interesting note he made, however, was that ASUS plans to release two versions of the ZenWatch 2. One model will be for men, and one for women. Seems like a no-brainer move in retrospect, but I guess most companies think that a majority of their products at geared at men, so they’ve never bothered making female-specific models. Of course, when companies do make products targeted at a more feminine audience, they tend to be a disaster. Anybody remember the HTC Bliss?

We may not have anything official until 2016, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more about the watch.

ASUS ZenWatch 2 will reportedly launch next year in sizes for both men and women

ASUS Zenwatch-2

One of the best Android Wear watches to date, the ASUS ZenWatch, was announced last September at IFA 2014. While it seems the tech community expects a yearly release cycle for just about every new product, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer than 12 months to get our hands on ASUS’ next smartwatch.

ASUS CEO Jerry Shen reportedly told NDTV Gadgets that, while the new smartwatch is in the works, the company doesn’t plan to launch the ZenWatch 2 this year. Shen also revealed to reporters that the wearable will arrive in two versions, one for women and one for men. There was no clarification given on whether the new variants will only be different sizes or if the company will launch two completely different styles.

This is certainly great news for both men and women who want to adopt wearables, but can’t seem the right size to fit their wrists. While a number of current wearables on the market are advertised as “unisex”, the fact of the matter is that some are just too large for many women’s wrists.

A lot can change over a year’s time, so we still may end up seeing the ZenWatch 2 launch before the end of 2015. Once we get anymore information on the new wearable, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Asus ZenFone 2 coming to India, pre-orders kick off today

ASUS Zenfone 2-3

Asus’ latest low-cost flagship has now formally launched in India with pre-orders starting today, exclusively through Flipkart. As we have seen in other markets, Asus will sell multiple variants of the Zenfone 2 with differing specs, though all the models sold will be powered by Intel Atom chips.

Starting with the entry-level member of the family, the Zenfone 2 (ZE550M) comes in at 12,999 INR or about $129. This model has an Intel Atom Z3560 processor with 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, microSD expansion, a 13MP rear cam, 5MP front cam, dual-SIM slots, a 5.5-inch 720p display, a 3,000 mAh battery, and Zen UI (based on Lollipop). Considering the pricing, this is actually a pretty impressive device — even if the relatively poor resolution, given the display size, will likely prove to be a deal breaker for some.

In addition to the ZE550M, there will also be three different configurations offered for the ZE551ML: a version featuring 16GB storage and an Intel Atom Z3560 CPU with 2GB RAM, a version featuring Intel Z3580 with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage, and a version with an Intel Z3580, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage. All three of these configurations have a 5.5-inch 1080p dislay, a 13MP rear cam, 5MP front cam, a 3,000 mAh battery, dual-SIM slots, LTE, and Zen UI (based on Lollipop). Pricing for these handsets are 14,999 INR ($236.76), 19,999 INR ($315.69) and 22,999 INR ($363.05) respectively.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

4GB RAM Asus Zenfone 2 heading to India via FlipKart, release date set for April 23

ASUS Zenfone 2-15

The Asus Zenfone 2 is heading to India this month, a product page has appeared on the popular e-commerce retailer FlipKart. Importantly, it’s the top of the range model that will be going on sale, featuring a Full HD 1080p display, the faster Intel Atom Z3580 processor and 4GB of RAM.

The Zenfone 2 will arrive in India on April 23th, which is just a couple of days away, but a price has not been listed yet and you can’t place pre-orders. Instead, you can hand over your email in exchange for more details about the phone when it launches.

It’s not clear if FlipKart will have exclusivity over the handset in the country, or if other retailers will also stock the Zenfone 2. Asus has confirmed that they won’t be using a flash sale model, unlike some other lower cost manufacturers, so hopefully availability won’t be an issue.

Asus’ Zenfone 2 is already competitively priced in Europe and the same will apply in India. The company is looking to capitalize on the growth in the country’s lower cost, high specification smartphone market, which is already home to brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Meizu.

If you’re curious about just what 4GB can actually do in a phone, check out this video of the Zenfone 2 being put through its multitasking paces. Don’t forget to delve into our hands on review if you’re still undecided about Asus’ latest smartphone.
