Asus announces ZenPad S 8.0 and three other tablets at Computex 2015

asus-zenpad-s-8.0-press-shot

Today at Computex, ASUS announced the ZenPad S 8.0, along with three other tablet solutions. Today is a big day for Taiwanese manufacturer, already revealing the ZenWatch 2 this morning.

Asus’ Zen line has seen quite a bit of popularity, whether it be in their smartphones, laptops or smartwatches. Now, the company is capitalizing off of that popularity and creating a new tablet brand, the ZenPad line, which will include 7-inch, 8-inch, and 10.1-inch solutions. Not only that, but each of the four announced tablets will have their own LTE model.

ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA)

The 8-inch tablet (pictured above) is a high-end solution, featuring a gorgeous 2,048 x 1,536 (324-ppi) IPS display. As you might see in a lot of Asus’ recent devices, packed inside the ZenPad 8.0 S is a 64-bit Intel Atom Z3580, paired with 4GB of RAM. Between the display and the performance-grade hardware, users should experience nothing but speed and efficiency with this new solution from Asus.

Some other bits and pieces you can find in this particular tablet are a 8-megapixel snapper on the back, a 5-megapixel solution on the front, 16GB or 32GB base storage options, a USB-C slot, and a 15.2Wh battery. The inclusion of USB-C will be interesting to see down the road with Android M’s USB Type-C features. In the meantime, the ZenPad S 8.0 is running Android 5.0 Lollipop with Asus’ standard Zen UI.

ZenPad 8.0 (Z380)

asus-zenpad-8-1-budget-press-shot

Asus’ ZenPad 8.0 is largely a budget solution, touting a sub-par 8.0″ 1280×800 IPS LCD panel, an Intel Atom x3 processor, 1 or 2GB RAM options, 8GB or 16GB base storage options, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 15.2Wh battery, and Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The ZenPad 8.0 does feature an array of accessories that not only look nice, but also add some much needed features. Asus says the Zen Case will be available in “five sleek or vivid colors and features a fine leather texture.” Users wanting more protection will want to opt for the Zen Clutch, a “sophisticated carrying and protection solution for ZenPad 8.” There’s also the Audio Cover and Power Case, adding 5.1-channel surround speakers and an extra 15 hours of battery life, respectively.

ASUS hasn’t mentioned anything about pricing or availability just yet, so it’ll certainly be awhile before we see any of their tablets in stores, much like how long it took users to get their hands on the ZenFone 2, especially in the US.

You can check out the rest of Asus’ announced tablets in the press release by hitting the source link below. What do you think of this new line of tablets from Asus? It’s exciting to see them offering solutions all over the spectrum–from high-end to low-end. There’s nearly a tablet for everybody here. Be sure to let us know in the comments.

ASUS unveils pocket-sized projector that can play videos from your Android device via USB

Asus+E1z+projector+fullbleed

ASUS has been extremely busy at the Computex event today. First it announced the ZenWatch 2, then a new Chromebox and just now, a pocket-sized projector that can play video from Android smartphones and tablets via a micro-USB.

Obviously, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen projectors for mobile devices that can fit in your pocket, but it is the first time we’ve seen one that is compatible with a USB cable as opposed to an HDMI, which makes it that little bit more portable as you don’t have to carry a second cable.

The unit itself features a whopping 6,000 mAh battery, which doubles as a portable battery pack, allowing you to charge any smartphone or tablet via its USB port, which is pretty useful if you’re mirroring a movie and don’t want your handset to die.

Unfortunately, there’s no solid information with regards to pricing or availability just yet, but some ASUS representatives have hinted that it may have a $200 price tag. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Asus adds two capable 13MP cameras to the ZenFone recipe: meet the ZenFone Selfie

ASUS-ZenFone-Selfie

Asus is jumping on the selfie-phone bandwagon with the ZenFone Selfie, a 5-5-incher whose claim to fame is its dual 13MP camera setup.

Announced today in the opening of Computex Taipei along the ZenWatch 2 and the new ZenPad series, the ZenFone Selfie keeps many of the specs of the well-reviewed ZenFone 2, and adds some goodies that will please the selfie-crazed crowd.

Starting with the basics, the ZenFone Selfie is similar to the ZenFone 2, featuring the same general design with rear-mounted buttons, but with a more cheerful, pastel color scheme. On the inside, the 5.5-inch Full HD ZenFone Selfie features a Snapdragon 615 processor (64-bit, octo-core), 2GB or 4GB of RAM, and 16, 32, or 64GB of expandable internal storage.

asus zenfone selfie

The Selfie comes with 13MP cameras both on the front and back, and both shooters make use of dual-tone LED flashes. There are some differences: the f 2.0 rear camera is equipped with a laser-assisted auto-focus system, a la LG G4, while the front shooter features an f 2.2 lens with an 80-degree viewing angle. Like any selfie-centric phone worth its salt, the ZenFone Selfie packs a beautification mode that can “soften facial features, slim cheeks, and enhance skin tone to add vibrancy, all in real time.” Now that’s progress! There’s also a panorama selfie mode, that stitches together several shots, perfect for group selfies, or as Huawei memorably called them, “groufies.”

Available in cyan, pink, and white, the ZenFone Selfie comes with an optional accessory called Swing, that can act like a kickstand or as an arm extender of sorts, selfie sticks be damned! Check it out in action, via Engadget.

Like with its other announcements today, Asus has not revealed pricing and availability details for the Selfie. But if the ZenFone 2 is any indication, we expect an affordable price tag and a rather long wait to actually see the ZenFone Selfie in stores.

ASUS announces the ASUS ZenWatch 2 at Computex with more sizes and a new button

Right on the heels of Google I/O, as usual, is Computex, Asia’s version of Mobile World Congress, and ASUS has kicked off in typical style with the announcement of several heavy hitting devices. Chief among these is a new Android Wear smartwatch, the ASUS ZenWatch 2, the follow up its original ZenWatch and was introduced with a number of things that make it seem quite a lot like another recently released smartwatch (read: the Apple Watch).

ASUS ZenWatch 2The similarities begin with the ZenWatch 2 being offered in two different size variants, with 22mm and 18mm watch band versions – no doubt this is probably to cater for the female audience who generally have the smaller wrists. Overally, the ZenWatch 2 doesn’t look too dissimilar to its predecessor – the curved glass over the display returns, but is now joined by a button on the side, which kind of makes sense for a watch but almost looks ungainly on the sleek ZenWatch 2 profile.

In terms of colour choice, you’ll be able to select from either a silver, gunmetal or rose-gold body as well as a number of different straps made from rubber, leather, metal or even a crystal encrusted watch band. That’s all the details we have right now, but no doubt more information will become available as Computex wears on.

What do you think about the ASUS ZenWatch 2? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

NVIDIA’s G-Sync brings smoother graphics to gaming laptops

NVIDIA’s G-Sync promised to kill a lot of gaming issues like lag and stutter on desktop PCs, but you need both a supported graphics card and monitor to make it work. However, that’s obviously not an issue for laptops, and NVIDIA has just announced G-Sync support for several high-end gaming notebooks. The models it has certified use the latest 960M, 956M, 970M and 980M discreet mobile graphics chips, including the 17.3-inch ASUS G751, the Aorus X5, the MSI GT72 G and two 4K laptops from Clevo.

Those G-sync-enabled gaming laptops feature screens approved by NVIDIA with 75Hz refresh rates designed to cut tearing, input lag, stuttering and other problems. You’ll also get a few new features like windowed mode for for borderless gaming and the ability to customize your refresh rates. If you’ve got one of those models (or are thinking of getting one), here’s the best part: the new drivers are now available with NVIDIA’s latest drivers.

Asus announces Quad HD ZenPad S 8.0 and three other tablets at Computex

asus zenpad s 8

Computex has always been the stomping ground of Taiwanese manufacturers, and chief among them, Asus uses the occasion to show off its new wares. This year is no exception: we’ve already showed you the new ZenWatch 2 and now here’s a look at Asus new tablet series.

ZenPad is Asus’ new tablet brand, capitalizing on the success of the Zen brand in laptops, smartphones, and wearables. In typical fashion, Asus announced a series of ZenPad tablets covering the market from end to end.

The ZenPad series comprises 7-inch, 8-inch, and 10.1-inch models, each one complete with their own accessories and coming with LTE variants. Asus shared details about the 8-inch ZenPad and ZenPad S, so we will focus on these two and update with specs for the 7-inch and 10.1-inch models as we get them.

ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA)

asus zenpad s 8.0

Starting with the ZenPad S 8.0, this is a high-end affair featuring a metallic design and a crisp 2,048 x 1,536 (324-ppi) IPS display in a 6.6 mm body weighing 298 grams. The 4:3 device features an interesting two-tone design that makes it more suitable for use in landscape mode, rather than in portrait.

As with most Asus tablets and smartphones, the ZenPad S 8.0 features Intel inside; the 64-bit Intel Atom Z3580, coupled with 4GB of RAM, should ensure top-notch performance, as we’ve seen on the ZenFone 2.

Other specs include 16GB or 32GB of storage, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, one USB Type C connector, and a 15.2Wh battery. The Type C puts the ZenPad S 8.0 in rather select company for now, though without a doubt a wave of devices will follow over the next couple of years.

The ZenPad S 8.0 runs Lollipop 5.0 with Asus Zen UI and you can learn more about this software from our review of the largely similar ZenFone 2.

ZenPad 8.0 (Z380)

asus zenpad 8 (1)

The regular ZenPad 8.0 is much simpler fare – everything about it screams budget, though Asus is trying to make it hip and sexy with the inclusion of a leather back, that can be switched with a range of special accessories. You can switch covers just to change the looks of the tablet, but you can also add some functionality. Zen Case is available in “five sleek or vivid colors and features a fine leather texture,” while Zen Clutch is a “sophisticated carrying and protection solution for ZenPad 8.” Audio Cover adds 5.1-channel surround speakers, while Power Case includes an external battery that can extend the ZenPad 8.0’s battery life to 15 hours.

Specs of the ZenPad 8.0 include an Intel Atom x3 processor, 1 or 2GB of RAM, 8 or 16GB of expandable storage, a disappointing 8.0″ 1280×800 IPS LCD    screen, a 5MP rear camera, the same 15.2 Wh battery as the ZenPad S 8.0, and Android 5.0 Lollipop. The ZenPad 8.0 will be available in Wi-Fi only or LTE options.

For now, Asus has not shared availability and pricing information for the ZenPad S 8.0 and the rest of the series, though knowing the company’s MO, it may be a while before you’ll see them in stores. With that said, everything points towards some very attractive prices, so we definitely look forward to learning more about these new ZenPads. Let us know your thoughts!

Asus announces new ZenWatch 2 at Computex

While many of of us are asleep, or should be asleep in my case, there’s actually a pretty big and important conference going on over in Asia. Known as Computex, this is Asia’s largest tech exhibition, and where companies like Asus make various announcements. Hot off the heels of Google I/O, and the latest update to Android Wear, which was rolled out with the LG Watch Urbane, Asus has announced the successor to the ZenWatch.

Not too much has been announced about the Asus ZenWatch 2, however, we do know that there will be two different sizes, 45mm, and 49mm. Along with the two new sizes, Asus is adding three different body styles, and new watchbands, there will be up to 18 different combinations available for whatever style you are looking for. Asus has also partnered with Swarovski to bring a more extravagant look to the straps for the ZenWatch 2.

What makes the larger ZenWatch 2 more interesting is that Asus is stating that users will be able to use the 49mm version as a mobile power bank. Surely this will not be for any extended period of time, but could definitely help out in a pinch. Battery size has not been announced, so if you have a phone with a huge battery, you may be out of luck regardless.

Asus has also changed the charging mechanism on the ZenWatch 2 to allow for faster charging. We are only 6 months removed from the announcement of the original ZenWatch so we can only speculate the reasons behind why Asus got such a head start on the ZenWatch 2, to the point that it was announced today.

More details will be coming as the Computex conference progresses, so be sure to keep an eye out of the specs and fun stuff that can be expected today. Meanwhile, let us know what you think about the latest rendition of the ZenWatch from Asus.

ASUS’ tiny projector can play video from Android phones over USB

If having friends crowd around your smartphone screen to watch videos isn’t exactly your idea of a good time, ASUS’ new portable projector might be for you. The E1Z, announced today at Computex, is an LED projector that can play content right from your Android phone over micro-USB. Typically, projectors need HDMI dongles to project from smartphones. The E1Z is small enough to fit in your pocket, and it also has a rechargeable battery, so it can get up and running without being plugged into power. It also works as a portable battery pack, allowing you to charge any USB device with its 6,000mAh battery. We’re still waiting on pricing and availability details, but ASUS reps mentioned that it may end up going for around $200.

ASUS has ridiculous tablet cover that adds 5.1 surround sound

What your tablet lacks isn’t NFC or a fingerprint reader. It’s a pop-up case that houses six speakers (with sub-woofer), and support for 5.1 channel surround sound. Maybe? ASUS says it will output six times the volume of the base tablet, and enough power to annoy neighbors for up to six hours. It will go on sale alongside ASUS’ new flagship ZenPad 8.0 tablet, but well, does it sound any good? Hopefully following ASUS’ press spectacle at Computex 2015, we’ll hear for ourselves.

ASUS’ new Transformer Book is a Windows 10 hybrid with USB Type-C

As we approach the launch of Windows 10, we’ll be seeing more and more devices — especially portables — featuring the slim and reversible USB Type-C port. One of such is the refreshed ASUS Transformer Book aka T100HA, a 10.1-inch two-in-one that will arrive in Q3 2015 with Intel’s new Atom x5 (“Cherry Trail”) processor plus 4GB of RAM. The tablet part weighs just 580 grams and is 8.54mm thick, but still offers up to 14 hours of battery life and a rear camera. Alas, that’s all we know so far about this machine, so we’ll keep an eye on further information when it’s ready.
