The Steve Jobs movie flopped at the box office
The internet was full of talk about the accuracy of Steve Jobs, but it turned out that the general public just didn’t care about the film at all. The Danny Boyle / Aaron Sorkin biopic of the late Apple co-founder went on wide release this weekend, but only made a paltry $7.3 million at the box office. That put it in 7th place, behind films like The Martian, The Last Witch Hunter and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. Unfortunately analysts had predicted that it would do double that figure, and it looks like Steve Jobs may now never make the studio that made it a profit.

Transit Directions for Sydney, Australia Going Live in Apple Maps
Several users are reporting seeing transit directions going live for Sydney, Australia in Apple Maps today, adding another major city for the the feature launched as part of iOS 9. Not all users are seeing transit routes for Sydney yet, but support is clearly rolling out at the moment for light rail, commuter rail, buses, and ferry service.
Apple added both Boston and Sydney to its list of supported cities for transit directions early this month, but quickly updated the listing to note coverage would be going live later in the month. Transit information for Boston went live last week alongside support for a number of Amtrak routes in the northeastern United States and nearby areas.

‘Steve Jobs’ Disappoints in First Full Weekend With 7th-Place Box Office Showing
As the first full weekend in theaters for Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs film comes to a close, early box office results have been disappointing, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Estimates put the film’s take at $7.3 million from nearly 2,500 theaters, well below expectations and only good enough for seventh place on the weekend.
Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs and Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak in ‘Steve Jobs’
Those backing Steve Jobs had wanted to land somewhere in the teens, but are counting on a long run throughout awards season (an A- CinemaScore should help word of mouth). Jobs is over-indexing in upscale theaters in major cities, including the Bay Area — home of Apple — but falling flat in Middle America. Two weekends ago, the $30 million movie scored the top location average of the year to date when opening in New York and Los Angeles. Through Sunday, its domestic total is $10 million.
“We’re going to redouble our efforts to support these markets,” said Universal domestic distribution chief Nic Carpou. “It’s working great in these theaters now, and we want to make sure it continues to do so.”
The film has generally received a positive reception from critics, particularly for Michael Fassbender’s portrayal of Jobs. Those more familiar with Jobs’ history and those closest to him have, however, been less satisfied with the film, in many cases taking issue with the way Jobs is portrayed and some of the artistic license that deviates significantly from actual events.
Apple sued over iOS 9’s eagerness to chew up cellular data
Not happy that iOS 9’s WiFi Assist feature is quietly gobbling your iPhone’s cellular data for the sake of boosting your WiFi performance? You’re not alone — and you might get compensation for your troubles. A California-based couple has filed a class action lawsuit accusing Apple of doing too little to warn iPhone owners about WiFi Assist’s data use. Allegedly, the guide it posted in response to concerns about the feature doesn’t cut the mustard. It “downplays” the kind of overage charges you could rack up after upgrading to the newer iOS revision, according to the complaint.

Apple Shares New iPhone 6s Ads Focused on Cameras and Hey Siri
Apple has shared three new iPhone 6s television ads called The Camera, Crush and Flip a coin, the latter two starring musician and actor Jamie Foxx. The new ads continue Apple’s “the only thing that’s changed is everything” campaign, focusing on the improved cameras and hands-free Hey Siri functionality.
The Camera is a one-minute spot showing off new iPhone 6s camera features, including 3D Touch shortcuts for taking and sharing photos, Live Photos, Retina Flash and 4K video recording. It also features 1080p HD slow-mo video recording and groups of people taking selfies using the improved 5-megapixel FaceTime camera.
Crush is a shorter fifteen-second spot where Foxx is getting dressed in front of a mirror and asks, “Hey Siri how do I look,” to which Siri responds, “Judging from your voice, I’d say you must be fairly attractive.” The focus of the ad is on how “Hey Siri” allows for hands-free usage of Apple’s personal voice assistant on iPhone 6s.
Flip a coin is a similar fifteen-second spot that demonstrates hands-free Siri on iPhone 6s. Foxx is holding two movie scripts in his hand, contemplating which one to choose, before ultimately saying “Hey Siri flip a coin.” Siri responds with “Tails” and Foxx says “sci-fi western it is.”
Apple has released nearly three dozen ads for the iPhone 6s and Apple Watch over the past few weeks. Foxx starred in a similar iPhone 6s ad for 3D Touch earlier this month, while a series of Apple Watch ads have been released on two occasions focused on Apple Music, Apple Pay, Siri and messaging, fitness, maps and more.
Watch this iPhone screen protector heal scratches within a second
The folks who came up with the self-healing iPhone case is now back with something a lot more impressive. Innerexile’s earlier technology could repair light scratches within about half a minute (given the right temperature, that is), but the latest version can do the same within just a second! Seriously, you’d have to study very hard to witness that brief magical moment, which proved to be tricky in our bronze brush test video after the break. So what’s the secret sauce behind this new coating? Well, it’s dotted with microcapsules that contain an adhesive-like liquid, and when damaged, the liquid will fill the void so quickly that you probably won’t even realize you’ve just scratched your case or screen protector.

Apple Music for Android is coming, according to leaked screenshots
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Apple has never really bothered with porting iOS apps over to the Android platform – iTunes, amirite? However, times are changing, and despite Apple having the revenue lead on Android as a whole, the music streaming business is a completely different kettle of fish. Apple’s offering in this space, Apple Music, is still in early days, but has to compete with the well entrenched communities of Pandora, Spotify, and even Google Music. So it’s no surprise that Apple is looking at making Apple Music for Android, and that’s been alluded to in a number of leaked screenshots this week.
There doesn’t appear to be too much of a different between this version of Apple Music and the iOS version (not that we’d know what to look for), but you will notice the welcome presence of the Material Design hamburger in the top left and accompanying slide menu which suggests that Apple – or whoever they pawned off the porting job to – has made an effort to make Apple Music for Android at least look like an Android app in 2015. We have no idea when this will be made available, but chances are given that the app in these screenshots looks pretty advanced, we may be seeing Apple Music for Android sooner rather than later.
What do you think about the look of Apple Music for Android? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Apple poaches NVIDIA’s artificial intelligence leader
Apple’s widely rumored electric car may not be fully autonomous, but it may well have some smarts. The company has hired Jonathan Cohen, who until this month was the director of NVIDIA’s deep learning division — in other words, a form of artificial intelligence. Cohen’s LinkedIn profile only mentions that he’s working on a nebulous “software” effort at Apple. However, his most recent job at NVIDIA centered around technology like Drive PX, a camera-based autopilot system for cars that can identify and react to specific vehicle types. While there’s a chance that Cohen could be working on AI for iOS or the Mac, it won’t be surprising if he brings some self-driving features to Cupertino’s first car, such as hands-off lane changing or parking.

Access granted: Mobile security at the touch of a finger
Whether spurred by work regulations or the desire for personal data security, many of us spend more time than we’d like entering PIN codes and passwords to access our devices. Biometric authentication tools, specifically fingerprint sensors, can help us reclaim those moments by providing access with the touch of a finger. The technology isn’t new, but it’s only in the past few years that it’s started to become standard on mobile devices. This week, we trace the ascent of the fingerprint sensor, from its early days as a peripheral to the embedded technology that’s simplifying and securing our mobile lives. Slideshow-332525
Leaked screenshots preview Apple Music for Android
Apple’s Music service is slated to make its way to Android devices real soon if the company stays true to its word. If you want to see what it will look like right now, though, German website Mobile Geeks has posted what it says are screenshots of the upcoming app. As you can see from the images, it comes with Beats 1 Radio, a recommendations page and the Apple Music Connect social network for musicians. It can also save music offline, and it even allows you to set the cache size, in case you don’t want tracks from the service to eat up too much space on your device. As 9to5mac noted, it incorporates Android design features such as slide-out sidebars, though it retains some elements from the original iOS app, as well. If the app’s launch doesn’t get delayed, you won’t have to wait long to see it for yourselves — for now, check out the screenshots above and below the fold.
