Google app contest winners show what Project Tango can do
Sure, Google and crew can put together some nice tech demos for Project Tango’s advanced depth sensing and motion tracking, but what happens when everyday developers take a crack at it? You’re about to find out. Google has announced the winners of its Project Tango App Contest, and most of them aren’t what you’d expect given the technology. The overall winner is HeroicArcade’s WeR Cubed Tango, a 3D puzzler that relies more on motion than the usual screen taps.

Adobe’s Photoshop iOS apps are ready for use on the iPad Pro
If you’re a designer or photographer, you’re likely champing at the bit to get your hands on an iPad Pro for creative work. To prep for the larger slate’s arrival, Adobe updated both Photoshop Fix and Photoshop Mix to take advantage of the tablet’s tools. The duo of apps play nice with iOS 9’s split-screen multi-tasking, wrangle larger image sizes (Adobe didn’t specify how large, though) and offer “basic” support for that newfangled Pencil. Of course, you’ll be able to make use of that split-screen feature on other iPads as well. New versions of both apps are available over at iTunes via the source links down below.

OnePlus releases Reflexion, a unique photo app for all Android devices
OnePlus came out of nowhere last year and made a pretty big impression with the OnePlus One. Whether the long-term impression was positive or negative depends largely on who you ask, but the company has certainly continued to ramp up its ambitions in 2015.
So far OnePlus has launched the OnePlus 2, and is just starting to offer up its new OnePlus X. And now they are also getting into the app game with Reflexion, a new photography app that is extremely simple to use and basically is designed to capture two shots, one from the front cam and one from the rear, and stitch them together into a unique reflected pattern. As you’d expect, there is a social sharing option that makes it easy to share your “creations” with others.
I’ll be honest, this is kind of cool but feels like something that should be part of a full-fledged camera as an option – not a stand-alone app. That said, the OnePlus Reflexion app is still extremely interesting for two other reasons: first, it’s cross-platform, with both an iOS and Android version being released, no need to own the OPO, OP2, or OPX. The second reason, you can actually get it without an invite!

Apple’s latest Android app gives you control of the Beats Pill+
When the new Beats speaker, its first since joining Apple, was announced earlier this month, the companion app and its added features were only ready for iOS. Now that the Pill+ is on sale, Beats released an Android version of the software, too. This marks Apple’s second Android app, following the Move to iOS tool that arrived in September to help you switch to an iPhone. If you’re in need of a refresher, the Pill+ app provides a DJ mode that’ll let more than one person control the tunes and allows you to pair two of the speakers for a bigger sound. The software is available from Google Play now, so if you already made the purchase, or are waiting for yours to be delivered, you can download the app on your Android handset or slate to make the most of it. And Apple Music should arrive for Google’s mobile OS soon enough to round out the setup.

The makers of VSCO Cam unveil an Instagram-like app for GIF making
Let’s face it: GIFs continue to be a popular way of expressing yourself, no matter how you’d argue the word is pronounced. There are a number of apps that’ll help you make your own animations, and now the folks behind VSCO Cam are joining the fray, too. The company built DSCO: an iOS app that lets you easily capture a few seconds worth of footage to create the moving image. If you’re familiar with VSCO, you know that its mobile photography app allows you to apply a number of presets to achieve the look you’re after before beaming them to a social network, posting them to the company’s own portal or just saving them to view later. The same is true with DSCO. Once you have the video, you can employ a number of filters, including a collection of presets developed alongside MTV and others, to put the finishing touches on that all-important GIF. You can then send it to the aforementioned spots for sharing or safe keeping. The app is a free download, but like we’ve already mentioned, it’s only available on iOS. Flywheel gives taxi drivers an Uber-like app of their own
Flywheel has helped drag taxis into the modern era through app-based hailing. However, that modernization usually stops in the cab itself — your driver’s gear is antiquated next to the phone-based tech in a Lyft or Uber car. Taxis are about to catch up, though. Flywheel has launched TaxiOS, a platform that replaces the dispatch, meter, navigation and payment systems with phone-based software. It not only streamlines the overall experience for both you and the driver (no matter how you’re paying), but marks the first instance of GPS-based metering in licensed taxis. In theory, you’re getting both a more accurate fare and fewer rude surprises.

Next, the company’s apps have some new tools for podcast listening. There are playlist and sharing options now, as well as offline listening for Premium Plus subscribers that’ll allow access during a flight or other times a connection isn’t available.

BBC iPlayer is finally coming to Apple TV
In its bid to bring programming to the largest possible audience, the BBC supports all manner of hardware and devices for its popular iPlayer service. iPhone and iPad owners have been able to stream on-demand for some time, but the company never completed the set by making it available natively on Apple TV. Now that Cupertino’s new streamer is up for pre-order, however, the Beeb has decided to put everyone out of their misery: it today announced that a dedicated iPlayer app is coming to Apple’s latest set-top box.

AT&T gives you extra data in return for taking surveys
Do you find yourself perpetually running just over your phone carrier’s data cap, and wish you could get a little more breathing room without paying a lot more? AT&T might have the answer. It just launched a Data Perks app for Android and iOS that adds precious megabytes to your plan for a given month in return for taking surveys and completing shopping offers. Think of it like Google’s Opinion Rewards, only you’re earning internet access instead of store credit.
