Omate has a smartwatch that runs Lollipop and makes phone calls
Let’s face it: deep down we probably all have wanted a smartwatch made by wearables company Omate that runs Android 5.1. Okay, that’s an overstatement. But there are at least a few folks out there that fit this bill and they’ll likely be pretty pleased about the news that the new call-capable TrueSmart+ is Lollipop flavored. The company took to Facebook to announce that both the TS+ and its slightly cheaper sibling will hit sometime either late October or in November for $169 and $149, respectively. Oddly enough, the pricier model doesn’t have a built-in camera like its predecessor but Omate says it has a TSi model with one.
What the TS+ does pack, however, is fancy rubber straps that do double duty concealing WiFi, 2G and 3G antennas and a Micro-SIM holder that’s apparently pretty similar to that of an iPhone. Oh, and that 1.54-inch screen’s been upgraded to 320×320 resolution , while the Android 4.4-powered TSi rocks a 240×240 display of the same size. Preorders open September 22nd and that window closes on Halloween.
We are excited to announce two newborns in the Omate family: the TrueSmart-i and the TrueSmart+ are going to leave the…

How to safely clean your Android smartphones and tablets

Is it any news that our smartphones are as dirty as anything can get? We man-handle these gadgets all day, smear grease all over them, take them to the toilet and put them through unimaginable germ exposure. In fact, a recent Mashable video (as well as studies) tells us our phones contain about 25,000 germs per square inch. That would be much dirtier than doorknobs, checkout screens and even toilets. Yes, you heard that right… most smartphones are dirtier than toilets!
Needless to say, you want to make sure you clean your device from time to time, but you have to do it the right way too. Remember these expensive tech gadgets could easily get damaged. And very few of us are lucky enough to have those waterproof devices you can probably just wash in the sink. Let’s give you some tips on how to clean your technology both properly and safely, shall we?

Do not use chemicals!
Wile the image above is urging us to pull out the bleach, glass cleaner or anything that can kill every single thing on that phone, this is something we must really resist. Yeah, we want to keep our devices as clean as possible, but keep in mind most phones don’t do well when put against strong chemicals. These can stain the materials and remove the protective coating manufacturers put on devices.
In other words, don’t do what the lady in the featured image of this article is doing! If you really must clean your device with some form of liquid, try to only use distilled water, and use very, very little. And turn your phone off when you do – this will increase the chances of the phone not getting water damage if your hand slips and you get the phone overly wet. We will go into further detail later on in the post, though.
Use a microfiber cloth for the overall body
We have a tendency to simply grab any paper towel and clean our smartphones superficially. While this generally works, it’s not the best way to wipe a smartphone down and really get rid of all the dirties. This is because most paper napkins and towels release lint, fibers and other particles. These can then make their way in between buttons, gaps and other parts that will later be hard to clean. Not to mention, paper and regular fabric can be harsh and scratch your devices!
You can buy microfiber anywhere, really. They are usually in pharmacies and eyeglass stores, but you can also score some neat deals on Amazon. For example, here’s a 6-pack of microfiber cloths for only $9.95. There’s also some cool mini stickers from Clean Screen Wizard I really happen to like. These little accessories also have a microfiber surface on one side, which works like a charm. The other side contains a sticker, which can be used to keep the sticker in place, save it somewhere in the phone or even use it for removing particles that may be stuck to your device.
Once you have a microfiber cloth, simply wipe the screen and the rest of the phone in straight lines until all the noticeable residue comes off. If you are having trouble removing a tough stain or smudge, spray a bit of distilled water into the cloth and wipe again. Then use a dry area of the microfiber towel to dry it as much as you can.
Dig into those hard-to-reach spots with cotton swabs
Cleaning the overall surface of your smartphone is easy, but those pesky germs and annoying particles always go and get between buttons and tiny gaps. You can use a cotton swab for this. The concept is the same as with the wipes; don’t get the swabs wet unless you feel it’s absolutely necessary. If you do need some liquid, try to keep it to a minimum. Don’t just soak the cotton swab and go at it.
Blow it all away with a compressed air can
Better yet, you can just use a compressed air can. These are among the most useful cleaning tools for the office. They can blast away dirt from keyboards, computer towers, laptops, mice and any other tech gadget, including smartphones and tablets. If there’s a really tough piece of dirt you just can’t get out, chances are a compressed air can will do the trick. The Read Right OfficeDuster has worked great for me.
Using alcohol is OK sometimes
Those who really want to kill all the germs will feel the need to use some kind of disinfectant. We urge you not to do this, but if you really must, your best bet is probably to use watered down alcohol… just don’t do it all the time. And don’t forget still keep the liquids light.
In a way, the alcohol helps because it dries away quicker than water. This means the solution won’t stick around for as long, reducing the possibilities of it making it to the innards of the device. I have personally done this, and though it may still affect those coating layers, I have noticed no real damage on any of my units.
In fact, I like using alcohol wipes for those times when I really want to deep clean my gadgets. These are dirt cheap and also happen to leave no lint or particles (at least it hasn’t for me). A pack of 100 wipes from Zeiss is only $10.60 from Amazon. These are made for lenses, computers, glasses and devices, so you should be relatively safe. I would just make sure not to use them when they are too damp. Let the towel dry out for a bit and then get going.
Scotch tape can be your friend
We told you about those Clean Screen Wizard stickers above and mentioned you could also use the sticky side to peel any dirt away. You will be glad to know good old scotch tape works the same way. It can even catch some pieces of dirt in between keys and get rid of fingerprints. It just so happens that it won’t do too much to solve the germ situation.
Enjoy!
Got your phone all cleaned up? Now make sure you keep it pristine by taking advantage of these tips as often as you can. Your devices will look great and be free of disgusting germs. Enjoy your sparkling gadgets!
Radar turns your smartphone into a baseball speed detector
Want to know if your baseball team’s pitching skills are up to snuff without carrying a dedicated (and frequently not-so-smart) speed detector? Scoutee might have something up your alley. It’s crowdfunding a baseball radar peripheral that turns Android phones and iPhones into pitch speed detectors. Plunk the device in the right place (including on the back if your phone, if you like) and it’ll tell you just how quick that fastball really was. You can not only add notes, but record video with a speed overlay — you’ll know whether or not that curveball was slow from the start.
The gadget won’t be cheap, but you can get a good deal if you pledge during the Kickstarter campaign. It’ll take as little as $129 (normally $149 to $169) to get a Scoutee versus waiting for the retail launch, when it’ll cost $299. You’ll ideally get your device in April, just in time for those early spring games. This isn’t a trivial expense no matter what you pay, but the crowdfunding price is just low enough that it might make sense if your kid’s Little League team needs a tune-up.

Android fans unite to take Apple down: swarm of 1-star reviews hitting the ‘Move to iOS’ app
Did you guys know Apple released its first Android app in the Google Play Store just last week? Most people were in disbelief. We never thought Apple would ever bring one of its services to Android… but then we checked what the app actually was and realized it all made sense. The application is called Move to iOS, and it essentially help users migrate all their content to Apple’s devices, including contacts, messages, photos, bookmarks, calendars and more.
Needless to say this hits a very delicate spot for Android fans across the globe. How dare they?! We suppose it’s a helpful tool for those who really do want to switch to iOS (even if you can sync many of these via Google’s services), it just seemed a bit too disrespectful to most users. Everyone was hoping for Apple to actually make some of its services available to Android. Instead we get this?! Either way, something rather comical has been going on at the Move to iOS page in the Google Play Store.

It turns out the Android community is much more united than some of us may think it is! Move to iOS managed to get almost 30,000 reviews in under a week, which is definitely an accomplishment. The bad news (at least for Apple) is that almost 25,000 of these are 1-star reviews! Now Apple’s app sits at a 1.7-star rating, which puts it pretty low in the scare of ratings from the Google Play Store.
And you guys have to read some of these reviews!
App locked my Android phone and told me I needed to buy an iPhone to unlock it. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. – Christopher Chavez
This app killed my goldfish! Everything was working great on my new iPhone 6s, but this morning I looked at my goldfish Sparky and he was dead, floating upside down in his tank! Nothing in my life has changed except for this app, so the two must be linked somehow! I want an explanation now!!! -Time Wrobel
Now let’s hear it from you. Have you left a comment and review in the Move to iOS Google Play Store page? Hit the comments and share it with us!
Does Blackberry “Venice” have what it takes to become your next phone?
Looking back, the past couple years of Android have been incredible for smartphone buyers. We’ve seen amazing devices come from all the major players, all of them desperately wanting their phone to become yours. Samsung’s latest Galaxy phones this year have brought a new level of polish and luxury that we’ve never seen from the company before. LG’s G4 introduced many improvements over last years popular G3 and is a very worthy contender of best flagship of 2015. Motorola recently announced it’s highly customizable and fairly affordable Moto X Pure Edition on top of that. While most manufacturers have announced fantastic devices this year, we can all agree that they’ve been more “evolutionary” than “revolutionary”. Do we have anything more to be excited about for the rest of this year? The new Nexus devices are bound to be announced at the end of this month, but there is something else I’ve been paying even more attention to.
Blackberry has got something very special for Android fans, and it demands your attention. Many leaks have been showing up for Blackberry’s upcoming flagship, code named “Venice”, including a hands-on video, confirming that it is indeed running Android. Right when I had very little hope for the Canadian smartphone maker, the sky started raining frogs, and I’m genuinely hyped for this device.
As I mentioned above, “Venice” is Blackberry’s first commercial phone running Android, a move they presumably hope will draw in more customers afraid of Blackberry’s older OS which lacked many of the apps Android and iOS have. Blackberry is taking a similar path as Microsoft, accepting that Android is not going anywhere any time soon, and that Google’s open-sourced OS might benefit them more if it is utilized rather than fought. Like Microsoft, Blackberry is expanding their powerful software services into Android and other areas, such as their “second-to-none” mobile security software. While Android’s security is as strong as it’s ever been, it still carries the stereotype of being easily susceptible to malware and viruses. Blackberry’s incredible security plus the world’s most popular mobile OS sounds like a match made in heaven.

Besides running Android, Venice is reportedly packing some serious hardware. Blackberry has always constructed very durable and beautiful devices, and Venice is no exception. This device is rumored to sport a 5.4 inch Quad-HD AMOLED display, a 1.8GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 808 processor, 3 GB of RAM, a large 18-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and a 5-megapixel front facing camera. As for the battery size, we are expecting a 3,000mAh non-removable battery. These specifications alone make this device quite tempting, but what’s even better? The phone’s slide-out keyboard, offering Blackberry’s most signature hardware feature.
Despite nearly every modern smartphone not having a physical keyboard, I miss having one on my messaging phone before I got my first Android. Looking back, I typed way faster with less errors, and it just felt better. Blackberry’s move to bring a slide-out keyboard onto a powerful 5.4 inch Android phone will be one of the boldest things to happen to the market in a while. Thank you, Blackberry, for trying to change things up again.

The “Venice” device is expected to bring all of 2015’s flagship hardware features, a near-stock Android experience with multiple very useful added tweaks and features including a re-tooled launcher, more shortcuts when sliding up from the home button including Blackberry Hub and Blackberry’s universal search feature, improved security features, and a more productive experience. Another feature Blackberry is bringing to this device is the touch sensitive keyboard, allowing you to scroll just by moving your finger over the keyboard like in previous Blackberry devices. The nice thing is, even if you don’t always want to use the physical keyboard, you can also use a software one too. If you’re concerned about the thickness of this device, the leaked hands-on video shows some promising looks of the device, as the actual screen is quite thin on top of the keyboard and body.
So far, does this phone compete with other flagships? A big, not huge 5.4 inch QHD AMOLED (slightly curved on the sides) screen, fast and competitive CPU, a large 18-megapixel camera with OIS, plenty of RAM for serious multitasking, very strong security and productivity features, a large battery, slide-out keyboard, and even expandable storage as confirmed in the video. This is a phone I’ve got my eyes on, and you can definitely expect further updates on it here at AndroidGuys.
What’re your thoughts on “Venice”? Does it have potential to be your next phone?

Huawei Nexus 6P will be the first Nexus to have 128GB option
Manufacturers of smartphones have held onto the 16GB storage option for a long time, with cloud storage the focus to mitigate any lack of storage. However, that could be set to change as the soon-to-be announced Huawei Nexus 6P will have a 128GB storage option.
The Nexus 6 last year came with 32GB and 64GB of storage, but according to sources, the Nexus 6P will have a 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB of storage available to purchase, of course without any expandable option.
With a 128GB storage option, the Nexus 6P would be the first Google-backed Nexus-branded device to have such a high storage option and despite the increased focus back toward expandable memory in Android Marshmallow, it seems unlikely to have a MicroSD slot.
Invitations have already been sent out for Google’s September 29th event in San Francisco where they are expected to announce the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

Google’s likely Nexus/Android event is happening September 29th
Google just sent over an invite for “some tasty new treats and much s’more” September 29th in San Francisco. It didn’t say what will be revealed but based on the timing, we’re thinking Android Marshmallow release, plus new hardware in the Nexus and Chromecast families? Recent leaks have pointed to Nexus phones from both LG and Huawei, while the Chromecast family may be expanding and getting rounder. Amazon and Apple debuted new devices for the TV this month, and we can’t see the folks at Google/Alphabet letting that go without a response. Whatever desserts Google is bringing, we’ll be there at 12PM ET / 9AM PT on September 29th to find out.

Android Pay reaches Google Play, ready for all in the US
Sure, Android Pay started its slow rollout last week, but with Google’s staged distribution you probably didn’t have it yet. Now, the Android team has announced it’s officially available on Google Play, so if you live in the US, you should have it on your NFC-equipped phone with Android 4.4 or higher, replacing the old Google Wallet app. Just add a card and you’ll be ready to tap-to-pay (even if you were already set up with Wallet). Of course, even with the slow rollout, some people have had issues with compatibility, using the app on rooted phones or receiving errant messages about unsupported cards. Some of those may be fixed if you have the latest version of Google Play Services, so check that first, while others like fingerprint verification need Android Marshmallow.
