Leak shows Verizon’s 10-inch budget tablet

Verizon's Ellipsis 10

You might not be very fond of Verizon’s Ellipsis tablets, but they do serve a purpose: they’re low-cost ways to get LTE data access on the road. And apparently, there are enough people buying them that the carrier is making a larger version. Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) has posted press shots of an Ellipsis 10 slate that (surprise!) translates Verizon’s no-frills Android strategy to a 10-inch display. There are no details as to what’s under the hood, but it’s clear that this tablet should run at least Lollipop. As for the release date and price? There’s nothing nailed down yet — we’re as in the dark as you are. The network has previously released Ellipsis models in early November for about $250, however, so you may well see history repeat itself.

Droid Turbo 2 leak hints at ‘shatterproof’ screen and Moto Maker

Leaked promos for the Droid Maxx 2 and Droid Turbo 2

Those rumors of Verizon launching the Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2 at its October 27th event? They just got much more concrete. Droid-Life has obtained leaked promos spilling the beans on both of the carrier-specific Motorola smartphones. As suspected, the Droid Turbo 2 should be advertised as having a “shatterproof” screen — we’re a bit skeptical of that claim, but Big Red will apparently back that up by accepting trade-ins of phones with cracked screens. Even if the display doesn’t live up to that billing, though, the new Turbo will reportedly offer Moto Maker customization. Finally, you won’t be stuck picking from a handful of black-and-red models while your Moto X-toting friends show off their more colorful devices.

The ad copy also talks about the Droid Maxx 2, although it largely says what you might already know: this is really just a Moto X Play gussied up for Verizon, complete with a 48-hour battery. It’s not going to be nearly as exciting as the Turbo 2, then, but you’ll at least have one option on the network if you value battery life above all else.

Throw money at YouTube Gaming stars each month with sponsorships

Remember when we said Twitch learned a lot from the recent launch of YouTube Gaming, Google’s own video game-focused live-streaming site? Turns out, YouTube is picking up some tricks from Twitch, a veteran of the live gaming arena. YouTube Gaming is rolling out “sponsorships,” a new option that allows viewers to give money to their favorite streamers monthly in exchange for a few perks, like a special badge for live chat and access to exclusive chat rooms. Sponsorships are $4 a month in the United States and the program is in beta now for a select group of streamers across 40 countries. It’s a lot like Twitch’s own subscription option, which is $5 per month and offers special badges, exclusive chat rooms and usually a live shout-out from the streamer.

YouTube Gaming isn’t stopping at sponsorships, either: Today it launches live mobile streaming capabilities for Android devices, a feature it announced during the Tokyo Game Show in September. Mobile capture allows streamers to record and go live with their Android games, directly from their smartphones. It even supports front-facing Android cameras and microphones so streamers can show off their bright faces and bubbly personalities. YouTube Gaming promises there’s no extra hardware or software required for mobile capture.

Now there’s no reason for YouTube Gaming personalities to ever stop streaming — more time live could mean more sponsors, which means more cash, and they can now even stream while on the bus, in the airport, at a club, in the bathroom, on a date or at their own weddings. Those are just (terrible) suggestions, of course.

LG first to push Android Marshmallow to its own flagship

LG’s gearing up to roll out Android Marshmallow to its devices, and you can install it as soon as next week… if you own a G4 handset and live in Poland. The South Korean manufacturer will release the latest Android version in the European country first, but it promises that America, Asia and the rest of Europe will follow. Unfortunately, the company doesn’t have exact dates for those markets yet. Local carriers will likely announce the upgrade when it becomes available, though; in the US, T-Mobile already confirmed that the G3 and the G4 will get Marshmallow in the future.

LG claims the G4 is the first in the world to get Marshmallow besides Google’s own Nexus devices. According to its VP of marketing communications, Chris Yie, it’s because the company worked closely with Google to make it happen.

By working closely with Google, LG has been able to bring Android 6.0 to the G4 ahead of any of our competitors. While speed alone isn’t an indicator of great service, it does go a long way toward giving consumers the confidence that LG is committed to its existing customers first.

Satechi releases a new wireless gamepad to turn your smartphone into a gaming device

Satechi, founded and headquartered in San Diego(America’s Finest City and also my hometown), announced a new Wireless Gamepad to help turn your tablet or smartphone into a real gaming machine. Our mobile devices usually fill our desire to game while we are out and about, but are still far away from replacing our home gaming systems. Part of the problem with tablets and smartphones is touchscreen controls lack the accuracy of a real gamepad. Also your fingers get in the way of the display ruining your total gaming experience.

51kQV3c19TL._SL1000_

Leave it to Satechi to release a reasonably priced($39.99) Wireless Gamepad, now available at Amazon.com or Satechi.net, which will replace your touchscreen controls with a 14-button gamepad. The gamepad has two joysticks, a directional pad, A, X, B, Y, R1, R2, L1, L2 buttons as well as the standard Select and Start buttons commonly found on console system controllers. To keep you from fiddling with balancing your smartphone on a table or your lap, Satechi intelligently designed a spring-loaded holder to keep the action in your hands.

Maximizing value for your dollar, Satechi also made the controller compatible with not only Android but iOS and Windows as well. Competitors usually have separate controllers for different operating systems. That might not be a good thing though because I can imagine someone with an iPhone asking to borrow your controller and not giving it back.

  • Android/Mouse Mode is compatible with a wide range of free apps from the Google Play Store including Angry Birds, Grand Theft Auto 3, MC4, Wild blood, Dungeon Hunter, Zombie, FC simulator, GBA emulator arcade emulator, SFC simulator, N64 emulator, Shadowgun, Sonic CD, Cordy, soulcraft, Zenonia4, 9 Innings 2013, Riptide GP, and more.

If you’re interested in making a purchase head on over to Amazon.com or Satechi.net.

Device Art Generator updated with latest Nexus phones

android_device_art_generator_nexus_devices

The Android Asset Studio online tool includes a Device Art Generator used for generating framed screenshots. That feature has been updated to provide frames for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P devices. The frames are designed to help developers quickly generate images showing how a screen will look on a device and can be used for marketing purposes.

Along with the new Nexus smartphones, developers have access to older devices as well, although it has been noted that the 2013 Nexus 7 tablet has been dropped from the lineup. Google still tells users of the Device Art Generator to not use the generated images in the Play Store.

If you want to give the tool a try, hit the source link. All you have to do is drag a png-formatted screenshot onto the frame you want to see and the framed image is generated on the fly and ready for download.
