The new HTC One appears to be getting a bigger, badder cousin

HTC One M8 Prime

Rumors of a higher-end edition of the HTC One M8, the M8 Prime, have been difficult to pin down; we’ve seen little in the way of tangible evidence. However, things just got interesting. Frequent tipster @evleaks has posted what’s reportedly a 360-degree render of the Prime, showing off a design with a few big differences from the current model. The most obvious may be the camera — it’s conspicuously bigger than that of the regular One, and it even juts out from the back. The phone also has a flatter, One Max-like body with a different surface than the current handset. According to @evleaks, the cosmetic change may stem from the use of an unusual aluminum and liquid silicone hybrid that would be both strong and heat-absorbing.

While the imagery doesn’t reveal much about what’s inside the device, rumored specs have hinted that it wouldn’t strictly be a One Max sequel. It would be the most powerful HTC phone yet with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 2,560 x 1,440 screen resolution, but its 5.5-inch display wouldn’t be quite so gargantuan as the 6-inch panel of the Max. That’s assuming the render and the hardware details are authentic in the first place, mind you. Although @evleaks has developed a reputation for mostly accurate scoops, we haven’t seen live shots or other details that would confirm what we’ve seen to date. If the Prime exists at all, it may not match up perfectly with what you see here.

HTC One M8 Prime gets full 360-degree leak

HTC One M8 Prime

One of the most trusted leakers, @evleaks, has released a full 360-degree view of the new HTC One (M8) Prime.

From the picture and gif file, you can see that the camera has undergone some drastic changes, which hints at a much better camera than the current One’s packing. However, there is always a tradeoff which is giving up the smooth rear shell.

HTC Prime 360

Below is a spec list that the rumored HTC One (M8) is packing:

  • 5.5-inch quad HD (2,560 x 1,440)
  • 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 805 processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • USB 3.0 port
  • 18-megapixel Duo Camera
  • Water resistant

Thanks again to @evleaks for getting his hands on the render and we hope it shows up soon!

LifeLock pulls its wallet apps, deletes data in light of security worries

wallet with a padlock on it

Wallet apps are typically more convenient than trying to keep tabs on a slew of identity and payment information yourself. However, that assumes that the apps are secure in the first place — and unfortunately, LifeLock is learning this the hard way. The ID protection firm has both pulled the LifeLock Wallet mobile app and deleted user data after learning that its tool (based on recent acquisition Lemon Wallet) “may not be fully compliant” with payment card security standards. While there’s no sign of a breach, the company says that it would rather play it safe and only restore the apps once people can trust them “without question.”

The move will have big consequences if you’ve poured a lot of data into LifeLock Wallet. You may have to dig out cards that you could previously afford to leave at home, and you won’t be recovering any receipts if you tossed out their paper copies. However, this is a potentially wise gesture to protect customers who might not otherwise realize that their data is at risk. It may also be necessary to avoid a run-in with the government, for that matter — LifeLock has to meet certain security requirements following a 2010 FTC ruling that the company both misled customers with fear-driven marketing and didn’t do enough to secure identity information. In that sense, the move is as much about saving the company’s skin as your own.

Box’s redesigned Android app opens almost any file you put in the cloud

Box for Android launching OneCloud apps

Box overhauled its iOS cloud storage app early this year with a simpler, speedier interface; now, it’s Android’s turn. The just-launched Box 3.0 for Android shares much of its iOS cousin’s look and feel, including minimalist controls and a high-speed previewer that opens over 100 file types right in the cloud. In other words, you won’t have to fire up Office Mobile just to get a quick peek at that PowerPoint presentation. You can search text in any document, too, and it’s easier to open content in Box-friendly apps through a built-in OneCloud gallery. The upgrade won’t necessarily lure you away from the likes of Dropbox or Google Drive, but it may be welcome if you regularly deal with exotic file formats — or if you just have to catch up on work while on the road.

Google Buys Divide, An Enterprise Android Company

divide

Divide, an enterprise Android company which is known for its work in in putting your work-life onto your smartphone, has recently been acquired by Google. This comes just after the Twitch acquire.

After Divide announced they were bought by Google they also stated, “Divide will work as it always has.” They also reminded fans of Divide that, “Divide was founded with a simple mission: Give people the best mobile experience at work. As part of the Android team, we’re excited to continue developing solutions that our users love,”

The enterprise Android company is known for it’s apps in the Play Store and App Store, along with it’s version of the Android OS. Divide’s products were designed to easily read work email, get better use from your calendar, easy access and use for contacts.

Bring your own device (BYOD) has been trending in the workplace throughout the world, and this must be Google’s way of getting a piece of the trend. BYOD has been fatal to a couple of smartphone companies, especially BlackBerry. BlackBerry was the standard phone that companies had given their employees due to it’s security and work-friendliness but nobody wants a BlackBerry anymore and because of BYOD companies aren’t buying them for their employees anymore.

This leaves the question, who will be the heir to the workplace smartphone company throne? With Google buying Divide, it is a huge signal that Google is making its attempt for the throne.

Gmail for Android can save attachments directly to Google Drive

Google app icons

Just because you want to save an email attachment on your phone doesn’t mean you always want a local copy. What if you’re running out of space? That won’t be an issue if you’re using the latest version of Gmail for Android; the newly updated app lets you save files to Google Drive, making it easy to fetch them later on most any Drive-friendly device. The upgrade also gets you to the navigation menu through a simple swipe gesture, and there’s both improved right-to-left language support (think Arabic or Hebrew) as well as explanations for why messages land in the spam folder. It may take a few days for the new app to hit your phone or tablet, but it should be worth your patience if you prefer to fetch important documents from the cloud.

AllCast now streams your media to any Android device

AllCast icon for Android

Koushik Dutta’s AllCast app can stream media to seemingly any set-top box you might own, but it hasn’t let you stream to (most) Android devices. Today, though, that barrier has come down: Dutta has released AllCast Receiver, an app that turns any supporting Android gadget into a streaming target. You can now send video to a tablet for more for more comfortable viewing, for example, or mirror your screen to walk someone through an unfamiliar app. To top it off, AllCast itself has received an update that will stream Google Play Music to other hardware, provided you get root OS access on the host device first. Whether or not you’re willing to take that risk, you’ll definitely want to grab the newer apps if AllCast is your go-to content sharing tool.

YouTube to acquire Twitch in billion dollar deal

youtube1

YouTube, owned by Google, is acquiring the popular videogame-streaming company Twitch for more than $1 billion.  The deal is an all cash offer and is expected to be annoounced very soon.

Twitch is a San Francisco based company that allows users to upload and watch live gameplay videos which can be streamed from your favorite console.  Twitch claims to have more than 45 million monthly users and over 1 million members who upload videos each month.

What is the reason behind the acquisition?  Personally, YouTube is likely widening its streaming services to live gameplay, which will likely come by the end of the year.  However, looking at the big picture, Google can also tap into all the data and use it for marketing or what not.  It will take sometime for regulators to approve the purchase, but I am sure YouTube is ready!

Samsung’s tablet for schools carries a tougher shell and extra smarts

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 for education

We don’t envy schools that have to go tablet shopping; many slates can’t survive roughhousing by playful kids, let alone impart some wisdom. Teachers will be glad to hear, then, that Samsung has fulfilled its promise of a classroom-ready tablet by releasing the Galaxy Tab 4 Education in the US. Hardware-wise, it boils down to a Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 with a rugged case — nothing truly special, but enough to survive a fall from a desk. The real highlight may be the software, which includes educational apps, books and videos alongside easy access to Google Play for Education. Samsung’s smarter Galaxy Tab carries just a slight premium at $370, although schools will want to tack on another $30 if they want Google Play’s help with their lessons.
