Tidal brings pristine streaming music to nearly every device you own

Tidal's iPad app

You can already check out Deezer Elite if you want high-quality streaming music, but it’s only available on Sonos devices. That’s not very useful when you’re away from home, is it? Thankfully, Aspiro has stepped in to fill that void with a far more accessible service, Tidal. The offering brings lossless internet tunes to Android, iOS, the web and seemingly every networked media player on the planet; the company has deals to support gear from 34 home audio companies, including Sonos and Denon. Tidal also has a few incentives to come back besides new albums, including articles, music videos and a Shazam-style song recognition feature. You can give Tidal a spin today, but be prepared to cough up some cash for that no-compromise sound. It costs $20 per month in the US (£20 in the UK), or about twice as much as many run-of-the-mill services.

Root Nexus 5 Running Android 5.0 Lollipop With SuperSU

android lollipop

The Nexus 5 running the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop software can now be rooted using a SuperSU package, formed from the Android 5.0 SDK with a build number of LPX13D.

This is great news for Nexus 5 owners concerned with keeping their root access when the Android 5.0 Lollipop update lands on their devices from the official OTA in November.

Using ChainFire’s SuperSU with the CF-Root tool gives you root access on the Nexus 5, and to do so yourself follow the steps below.

Root the Nexus 5 On Android 5.0 Lollipop

  1. Download the SuperSU root file here.
  2. Download the adapted hammerhead boot image here.
    – extract the contents.
  3. Note: You must have Android SDK already pre-installed before starting.
  4. Use the extracted file from the boot image folder and copy it over to the same folder that the SDK is sitting.
  5. Connect the nexus 5 to the computer with the USB wire.
  6. Have the SDK folder open and right click the mouse and hold the ‘Shift” key on the keyboard.
    – now you have the command line open and ready for us to type some commands.
  7. Type the first command: “adb reboot bootloader”.
    – you are running in bootloader mode.
  8. Type the second command: “fastboot flash boot boot.img”.
  9. This command takes some time as it is flashing the file. Do not touch any keys until it finishes.
  10. Select the recovery option from bootloader mode.
  11. Choose the “install” option from the main menu.
  12. Locate the root file from earlier and upload the file to the Nexus.
    – confirm the process and do not touch any keys until it finishes flashing once more.
  13. Go back to the main screen of recovery and select “reboot System Now”.
  14. The initial boot process can take minutes longer for the first time.

Enjoy your rooted Nexus 5 with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

AT&T confirms upcoming support for LG G Watch R

AT&T on Monday confirmed the upcoming availability of the LG G Watch R via a press release. Unfortunately, the carrier stopped short of announcing any price or exact release date. On a more positive note, however, AT&T does promise to be “among the first” providers to offer the Android Wear device. If we were to… Read more »

HTC Sense 7 with Material Design on Android 5.0 Lollipop screenshots leaked

Recently, Google made the announcement of Android 5.0, the latest and the most advanced version of Android so far. The new update is expected to hit almost all the flagship devices of different OEMs like HTC, LG, and Samsung etc. Talking about HTC, the M7 and M8 will be the first one to receive this update, and according to a leaked screenshot by YouMobile, we might have an idea about what HTC is working on.

1It can be seen in the picture above that HTC is planning to release a new version of HTC Sense, known as Sense UI 7; it will come with Material Design and obviously Android 5.0. However, the source further mentions that these leaked shots might be the early build of Sense UI, so nothing is set on stone. But at least, it still gives us on idea on what we can expect from HTC later this year.

2What are your thoughts about it? Let us know in the comment box below.

Nextbit is bringing iOS-like app continuity and ‘limitless’ storage to Android

You may just about recall that Nextbit, a startup formed by ex-Googlers, has been collaborating with Cyanogen on a “really cool” secret project. As it turns out, this is all about the continuity experience across Android devices — very timely given the recent launch of OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.1, which boast a set of continuity features. Nextbit’s offering is dubbed Baton, and as the name suggests, it lets you quickly pass an app’s state from one Android device to another, meaning you can continue playing on the same level in a game, editing the same document in an app or browsing the same web page right away; with the precondition being the second device must also have Baton and the same app installed. Better yet, app developers don’t have to do anything at all; existing apps should just work.

http://www.engadget.com/embed-5min/?sid=577&playList=518483150&responsive=false

To toggle a pass, simply hold down the “Recent Apps” Android soft key and then choose your desired target device. In a matter of seconds, the target device will wake up and launch the same app in the same state. Similarly, you can do the same to pass the app to the previous device or to a new one — provided that it’s already associated with your CyanogenMod account, running Baton and has the identical app installed. In the case where the passed app isn’t yet installed, the OS will prompt you to download it. The more we look at this, the more we wonder why didn’t Google come up with this.

“We’ve taken the cloud and we’ve deeply integrated it into the OS itself,” Nextbit CEO Tom Moss said proudly.

Interestingly, Nextbit’s Baton somewhat contrasts with iOS’ Handoff by getting the user to “push” an app’s state to a target device, as opposed to pulling an app onto one’s selected device. Different initiations, but similar ideas. That said, Handoff only works on iOS and OS X apps that use its APIs (which isn’t surprising given the cross-platform nature), whereas Baton has the advantage of requiring literally no dev work at all.

Don’t be mistaken: Baton isn’t an app that you download from the Play Store. Rather, it’s a framework that utilizes the cloud to keep apps and data constantly in sync across multiple Android devices. And since the state of the apps plus the UI’s look and feel are backed up daily, Baton also lets you restore to your desired moment. In fact, this particular part of Baton is already being shipped as a white label product on Japan’s NTT Docomo devices as of last week, and Nextbit is in talks with Chinese OEMs to spread the love further.

OnePlus One will definitely be getting Baton.

Likewise, Baton will only be available on devices made or sold by licensees, and Moss said he’s getting a pretty good momentum in terms of establishing partnerships. This feature is currently only available to select testers who are running the latest version of CyanogenMod, though Nextbit will soon be launching an invite-only beta program. We’re also told that Baton’s first public release will debut on the “commercially distributed Cyanogen operating system” at some point this year; and yes, this means the popular OnePlus One will definitely be getting Baton.

But this is only just the beginning for Nextbit. Seeing that 50 percent of smartphone users run out of storage within the first 12 months, the startup’s next goal is to enable “limitless” storage — local storage and cloud storage combined as one — on Android devices. The execs didn’t dive into details since they are in talks with a carrier partner, but on paper it’s simple: This is achieved by intelligently moving data between local storage and the cloud, so the user wouldn’t notice a thing.

“We don’t want to change users’ behaviour, so we’re keeping it totally seamless,” said Scott Croyle, HTC’s former lead designer.

“It’s all about solving the real pain points on our mobile devices,” Moss added.

Good news LG G3 and G2 owners, you will get Android 5.0!!!

lg_g3-official_1

It was touch and go for awhile, but the newest reports seem to indicate that the newest LG flagship phones should receive Android 5.0.  A rep for LG in the Netherlands and Belgium confirmed that the G2 and G3 should see Lollipop before the end of the year.  There wasn’t anything more specific cited by the rep, but we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.

10 of the hottest new Android apps of the week (October 26)

hottest_apps-week

Looking to pick up a new Android app or game to try out this week? Why not start with some of the freshest titles around? What you’ll find below is a collection of ten of the hottest new Android apps from around the last week or so. We’ve gone through and picked out a nice selection of stuff and think you’ll enjoy a few of them!

Note that this article is split evenly over two pages.

inbox by gmail

Inbox by Gmail

Play Store description: “Your email inbox should help you live and work better, but instead it often buries the important stuff and creates more stress than it relieves. Inbox, built by the Gmail team, keeps things organized and helps you get back to what matters.

We say: Google surprised everyone this week with the announcement of Gmail’s latest venture, Inbox. Inbox is essentially Gmail and Google Now slammed together with a mix of the app Mailbox. A few of us here at AndroidGuys have been lucky enough to get the app, and we absolutely love it. If you want it, you currently have to ask for an invite directly from Google by emailing inbox@google.com or asking a friend who has the app.

RETRY

Play Store description: “From the guys sitting in the room next to the guys who made Angry Birds, comes RETRY – a game so hard, so addictive, so old skool that you’ll think you’ve stepped into an 8-bit time machine and gone back to 1986. Totally rad!

You’re in the cockpit of a smoking, loop-the-looping, out of control, 8-bit jalopy of an airplane. Grab hold of the yoke, ace. It’s going to take raw skill and white-knuckle stunts to get through this one. Enter the danger zone!

We say: Ever since Flappy Bird came and went, many developers have tried to copy the formula the game had: a balance of too hard but addictive enough to keep you playing. Well, Rovio is taking a crack at it with RETRY. I tried this game myself and it is quite fun, and addictive. The difference with this particular game is there are levels, allowing you to feel a sense of achievement. Don’t take my word for it, download it for yourself.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile

Play Store description: “We are thrilled to announce RollerCoaster Tycoon® 4 Mobile™ including Queue Lines! Enjoy a whole new level of customization, watch your peeps line-up and wait for rides while increasing the BUZZ each one produces. Build your park, make your peeps happy, and play with millions of other players online today! The game includes all new mini-games including slots and others!

We say: For those that have memories of playing RollerCoaster Tycoon on your computer are going to love this new addition. RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile is a shot at bringing the popular computer game to mobile devices. Currently has 3.7 stars and already over 500 thousand downloads, so it must be pretty good. Let us know how you like it.

Clash of Gangs

Play Store description: “From the makers of the #1 strategy game on Android comes Clash of Gangs – an all-new action-packed tactical combat game! Clash your way to the top of the criminal underworld as you build your army of loyal soldiers, deadly Bosses, and even military-grade assault Choppers. Send your gang out on combat missions or raid players from all around the world. Build your base and defend your reputation as the leader of the biggest – and baddest – crew in town!”

We say: Clash of Clans has made quite the impact on the mobile gaming world, bringing a fun, humorous, and simple game that has caught the world by storm. Well, the same makers of Gods Rush, IGG.COM, have released the game Clash of Gangs which tries to bring a different twist to the Clash of Clans formula. That is seemingly working, as it has 4.4 stars and over 500 thousand downloads.

lumic

Lumific

Play Store description: “Lumific keeps your camera roll tidy and beautifies your photos, so that you can share them at their best. We group your photos automatically into events. Turn your favorite moments into gorgeous featured events that are easy to show your friends and share over Facebook. See your photos in a whole new light. Using sophisticated imaging technology, Lumific brightens, beautifies and edits your photos. All automatically.”

We say: When Google announced their new Google+ Auto Awesome feature, everyone was amazed. Now you can not just back up your photos automatically, but have become better looking, all without having to do anything yourself. When they added Stories to those slew of features, it was even more incredible. Well, Lumific looks to provide a better experience with those same features. Acting as a Photo Gallery on your phone, if automatically “beautifies” your photos, and then groups them into events so you can find them more easily. They have already updated their app at user’s request, which means they’re willing to work with their user base and provide quick updates, which isn’t common among new app developers.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Android Lollipop update should hit sometime in December

Samsung Galaxy S5 Android Lollipop updateAndroid Lollipop is now officially released for all and for all of us who don’t own Nexus devices, now begins the excruciating wait for software updates to the latest version of Android. With various manufacturers making their promises for when their devices are going to be updated, many people have turned their attention to Samsung to see if the Android giant is going to do anything differently than it has in the past. As it turns out, it might, as the Samsung Galaxy S5 Android Lollipop update is allegedly going to be available sometime in December.

This information comes to us via SamMobile, who’s sources have narrowed their previous claim down from “November or December”. SamMobile has also already given us a sneak peek of Android Lollipop on the Galaxy S5 so when the update does finally roll out, it’s unlikely that we’ll see anything that’s too foreign to us. It’s worth noting that while December is the quoted window for this update, depending on your region, the update may not end up reaching you for a few more weeks after it is officially released. At least we know it’s coming though.

What do you think about the Samsung Galaxy S5 Android Lollipop update schedule? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
