HTC America had made it official; The HTC One M9 will be available for purchase beginning on April 10.
The HTC One M9 was announced just a few short weeks ago and now it seems we wont have to wait long before we can get our hands one. HTC America today made a live announcement where they stated that the HTC One M9 will be available for purchase here in the States beginning on April 10. This in an interesting date, as it was reported that the Samsung Galaxy S6 will also be released on that same date. Maybe HTC and Samsung decided to coordinate their release dates as they did their announcements.

Virgin Media customers finally get access to Sky Sports’ Android app
As part of its tie-up with Sky, Virgin Media has been letting subscribers use their logins to access Sky Sports and Sky Movies. Apple users gained access to both services in August last year, while Android device owners have had to make do with Sky’s movie streaming app. Today, the cable giant announced that it’s finally completing its Android rollout by granting customers access to the Sky Sports app. Like the other services, users need to have already signed up for the TV package, but if that prerequisite has been fulfilled then Sky Sports 1 to 5, Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports News HQ can be streamed right away.

Buy the Moto X Pure Edition, get a free Moto E
Want to buy a smartphone for yourself, but also need to snag a cheap phone for family (or, let’s be honest, a backup for yourself)? Motorola might have you covered. It just kicked off an unusual promotion that gives you a free 3G version of the new Moto E when you buy a Moto X Pure Edition. That’s not so hot if you insist on LTE data for every device, but it’s a no-brainer if you were either set on getting a Moto X or don’t relish the idea of splurging on two phones at once. Don’t spend long deciding what to do, though — Motorola is only running the promo through March 24th.

Samsung Galaxy S6 does not support all features of the Android 5.0 Camera2 API
It was revealed yesterday that the Android 5.0 update on the Sony Xperia Z3 did not introduce the camera features from stock Android. Known as the Camera2 API, these features introduce the likes of RAW image capture and some other crucial features. It has now been revealed that even the Samsung Galaxy S6 , Galaxy S6 Edge and the HTC One M9 are missing these Camera2 API features.
The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge reportedly don’t have the .dng or RAW image capture support. The two devices are also said to be lacking shutter speed control, which might come as bad news for prospective buyers of the two flagships.
SpectraStudy has compiled a list of features missing with the two devices:
- no manual white balance via RGB gains
- no custom color space conversion matrix
- no shutter speed control
- no manual exposure parameters (only rough exposure steps control)
- non-fixed metering, etc.
This also applies to other flagship devices like the HTC One M9 which was unveiled at the MWC. Interestingly, Google offers the full list of features from the Camera2 API on its Nexus devices like the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6.
What do you make of these exclusions by major companies like Samsung? Sound off below.

Google starts reviewing apps before they reach the Play Store
Although Google has tightened app policies on the Play Store over the years, the company thinks it can do more to protect users. One way to do that is to crack down on the amount of malware and bad apps on its marketplace, so it’s begun reviewing apps before they become available to download. The new policy, which is similar to Apple’s approach on the App Store, has been in effect for a couple of months and uses a mix of algorithms and human intervention to weed out rogue apps.
But that’s not all it’s doing. Google has also launched a new rating system for Android apps that will spell out which apps and games are appropriate for certain age groups. It’s teamed up with a number of independent bodies including the ESRB, PEGI, USK, ClassInd and the Australian Classification Board, the same groups that classify video games like GTA V before they go on sale.
The idea is to help developers better target users and educate parents about the apps and games they are being asked to download. The ratings will cover the usual topics: sexual content, violent content, drugs, alcohol and gambling. According to Google, if users aren’t in one of the supported countries, it will deliver an “age-based, generic rating” that has been awarded after developers have completed a content rating questionnaire. If developers don’t comply, downloads could be blocked in certain regions.
It’s a far cry from the early days of Android, when developers could submit whatever they like. The Play Store is now a $7 billion-plus business, so Google needs to better protect users as hardware gets more powerful and apps normally reserved for desktops and consoles come to mobile devices.

Cyanogen shows off new boot animation
We have been hearing for some time now that Cyanogen was working on an Android replacement without accessing Google Services. Now, the Cyanogen team has published a video on YouTube showing off their unique boot animation that will come along with the new Cyanogen OS update.
The new boot animation animation is a far cry from the flashy one at present as Cyanogen seems to have taken a cleaner and simpler approach this time. Previously it was leaked that the team at Cyanogen was preparing a new email client for Cyanogen OS 12.
Cyanogen is expected to throw away some more teasers with the impending OS 12 upgrade just weeks away. Within weeks, we will see the OnePlus One and the Micromax Yureka receiving Cyanogen OS 12 upgrade.
Rumour mills had earlier suggested that Microsoft was set to become a minor investor in Cyanogen in the latest rounds of funding but later the whole story was debunked. Parallelly Cyanogen’s CEO had said: “We want to take Android from Google.” The statement did not mean that Cyanogen was developing a Microsoft centric OS, clarified Cyanogen adding that it only wanted to allow companies to be able to use Android without having to adhere to Google’s tricky usage licenses and agreements.

LG G4 rumored to have a 5.6 inch screen
Samsung and HTC recently announced their latest flagships devices, the Galaxy S6 and M9 respectively, and LG is mustering its forces to do the same later this year. Until that time though, we are forced to go by the small leaks and rumors that circulate around the internet. One of those small bits of information is the rumor that the LG G4 will have a 5.6 inch screen. That would make the screen on the LG G4 bigger by only 0.1 inches. Now while that may seem like a very small amount, it does put the LG G4 on very fragile ground where size is concerned. The LG G3 was already a large device and making it successor bigger is a risky move.
The LG G3 was a great success last year though and LG is giving the people what they appear to want, larger devices. For now that is all the information that we have but stay tuned during the upcoming weeks, as I am sure more leaks are sure to arise.

VPN featured found hidden in Android 5.1
Pocketables‘ John Frent discovered a new system application called “Google Connectivity Services” when he looked around Android 5.1 on his Google Nexus 6. The app appears to be a VPN service that is in the works.

To find it, go to Settings > Apps > All and scroll down to Google Connectivity Services. In order to start the app, the activity com.google.android.apps.gcs/com.google.android.apps.gcs.WifiAssistantOptInActivity must be launched. Frent was able to do this by using an app known as QuickShortcutMaker, which allowed him to create a shortcut to Google Connectivity Services on his home screen. When he launched the app, it read, “To help protect you on open Wi-Fi networks, your data will be transmitted securely through a Google VPN.”

The “Learn more” button takes you to a Google support page. “Got it” takes you to the VPN connection request screen.

Beyond this point, Frent was unable to get the service to work on an open WiFi network, a secured WiFi network, or LTE. He also states that he is unsure Google will launch this feature. After all, it has only just been discovered.
As he says, Google may be using it in its planned wireless service built with the help of T-Mobile and Sprint’s networks.
