AT&T Nexus 6 starts to receive Android Lollipop 5.1

I have been using a Nexus 6 for the past four weeks, and I can tell you the bugs are getting old.  Luckily for me, AT&T started its roll out of Android Lollipop 5.1 as my own phone received the update last night.  The build number is LMY4D7, and it comes with stability improvements, supposed improved battery life, bug fixes, and the ability to lock your phone and keep it locked even if the phone somehow manages to get wiped.

If you’re wondering how to check for the update, the phone should check itself whenever you hop onto a WiFi network, but you can still manually check by hitting your “settings” button, followed by “about phone”, and then finally followed by “system updates”.

I can already tell you that the phone is running much smoother, battery life has not changed much in the short time I have been using my phone, but overall I am happy with the update.  For the record, I am using a Nexus 6 purchased directly through AT&T, as I could not wait for a Google version since the phone was on back-order for so long,

Your Android phone will soon stay unlocked while you’re holding it

Typing on a Google Nexus 6

If you’re frustrated that your smartphone locks while it’s still in your hands, Google may soon come to your rescue. A handful of Android Police readers report that their Lollipop-equipped phones’ Smart Lock security now includes “on-body detection,” a motion-sensitive feature that keeps your Android device unlocked so long as it’s either in-hand or in your pocket. This isn’t completely secure (a pickpocket could have a field day), but you don’t have to worry about someone snooping on your personal info just because you left your handset on the table for a hot minute. Just when you’ll get this option isn’t certain, though. Google is slowly rolling out body detection to users through Google Play Services, not software updates, so you might not know it’s available until you dig through the settings at the right time.

BlackBerry updates its BBM app to bring support for “Protected”

BBM_Android

Yesterday, BlackBerry updated its official BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) application in the Play Store to bring support for “Protected” — a new ” enterprise-grade secure instant messaging service.”

So, what exactly is BBM Protected and how does it work?

Well, according to the Canadian manufacturer:

“BBM Protected offers an enterprise-grade secure instant messaging service with all the features of a consumer IM app, the hardening of on-premise security together with the convenience of a cloud service. All messages are encrypted using keys generated by the communicating mobile devices themselves. This BlackBerry innovation effectively prevents ‘man in the middle’ hacker attacks, providing greater security than competing encryption schemes, and earning BBM Protected FIPS 140-2 validation by the U.S. Department of Defense.

With the announcement this week, organizations using BBM Protected can now let their employees chat securely using BBM Protected to non-BBM Protected workers at other companies, or customers. The result: instant federation and bulletproof security for messaging communications with partners outside of your enterprise.”

BBM Protected is available via an extra subscription through BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Services), but to get you acquainted with the service, a 30-day free trial can be accessed. It’s available for all Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich or above, version 2.6 of the BBM app or higher.

Amazon wants to give paid apps away for free

Downloads from Amazon’s Appstore almost assuredly aren’t the raging success that the company’s ventures like Prime are, but the retail juggernaut isn’t giving up on it yet. In fact, the former looks like it’s getting an injection of the latter’s DNA with something called Unlocked. According to a leak obtained by TechCrunch, Bezos and Co. are experimenting with the idea of offering paid apps and in-app purchases free of charge. It apparently isn’t limited to games either, as Monument Valley and Sonic Dash sit alongside productivity apps like OfficeSuite 8 + PDF Converter.

The presumed plan is to give Unlocked a big push from within the main Amazon mobile app and make it easier for users to find applications without being overwhelmed by the sheer number of those available. To do this, it’ll favor algorithms rather than “human touch,” and a filter’s planned to keep Unlocked apps separate from others. Amazon already offers plenty of free app promos, so this isn’t exactly unprecedented but it does raise a number of questions. Is this another feature that’s locked behind the Prime paywall? Probably. Will it actually be worth taking advantage of? That remains to be seen. We’ve reached out for further details and will update this post should we hear back.

Check out the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge in this early review

It may still be a few weeks until the Galaxy S6 Edge is released but an early review has hit YouTube to give us an early impression of the next Samsung device.

BeginnersTech has managed to get their hands on the S6 Edge and have provided an initial impressions review outlining the key specifications and performance, especially how the curved edges of the device handle.

TouchWiz has been toned down and the S6 Edge comes with Android Lollipop (5.1 hopefully) and that is coupled with 3GB of RAM and a Exynos Octa-Core processor making it a real power-house.

You can check out the review below:

Moonshine Rabbits Android App Review

Developed by STARS ASHES, Moonshine Rabbits is an arcade game with a very simple objective; smash the objects that are flung at you.

Screenshot_2015-03-20-19-22-55

The scenario is that you’re a moonshine drinking resident who now finds multiple rabbits hurling objects at you on your property. You have to tap the objects as they come towards you in order to smash them. They get more frequent and quicker as you progress, with the number of rabbits increasing as you continue through the levels.

Screenshot_2015-03-20-19-21-23

Moonshine Rabbits is very simplistic at its best and I did struggle with some graphic errors. As shown in the screenshot above running on my Note 4, on-screen graphics are tiny, with the instructions barely legible. I also seemed to have some odd black lines on the bottom left of my screen throughout my time playing Moonshine Rabbits, and for some reason the app wasn’t registering the number of objects I’d successfully smashed.

With a bit more variety and perhaps moving to a swipe motion instead of a tap (to cut the fruit rather than smash it) in order to enable combos and multipliers to be introduced, Moonshine Rabbit would be a solid game, but in its current state, and with the bugs mentioned above, the app is definitely worth checking out if only to kill a few minutes on the train on the morning commute.

LG could be making the next Nexus phone

The next Nexus phone faces a bit of a naming dilemma – where do they go after the Nexus 6? Can’t go Nexus 7 because that already exists, and any reduction in number would seem like a step back in generation. Whatever Google decide to call the next Nexus, a new report suggests that the manufacturer behind the device is LG.

Codenamed ‘N000′, sources report that Google engineers recently visited LG headquarters in South Korea to discuss the device, which also reportedly carries the name ‘Nexus 7′, but take that with a pinch of salt.

If true, this would be the third Nexus device made by LG in the lineup. Would you like to see a third LG Nexus device?

Glextor AppManager & Organizer Review

Glextor AppManager & Organizer is the organizer you never knew you needed. Android has endless ways to customize your phone and allow you to have key app access quickly. With home screens, widgets, folders, and phone search you are a short tap away from you favorite tools. Glextor takes this idea and adds even more personal customization. The stock app drawer in android is limited to a few organization features and is generally a place I hardly use. Many apps get lost in the mix of hundreds of applications on your phone. This organizer allows you to have multiple folders all in one place with personal tags to navigate your apps faster.

The saying ” I forgot I even had that” has been said numerous times by me as a power user. My phone has become my life with tie ins to home, finance, games, work, and fitness. Your phone allows for some organization with limited folders and custom home screens but they fall short on capabilities. Glextor takes custom organization to a whole new level giving you dozens of possibilities. The application allows for personal naming of groups but also has generic groups names. You can also tag your favorite apps to have them display first when you open the app. Taking customization into overdrive you can also add your groups on your home screen and change the icon color, size, border, and name. There is also options to back up your settings to keep everything the same when you upgrade your device or operating system.

This organizer lets you customize just about everything from the layout to the look making it easy to highlight important applications. You can also hide applications that you do not use often such as holiday themed programs or icons for wallpaper packages. To add even more to this useful tool you can also revert back to old versions of applications if you find the update is not to your liking.  At first glance this just seems like another organizer in the long list of organizers but Glextor has made it stand out among the rest by giving the user endless customization. The only negative found was the amount of options makes initial setup take a long time for picky users. The app has an auto setup at first to gives users a solid foundation to start with.  Glextor AppManager & Organizer is free from the play store but also has a paid version allowing for even more capabilities. This is a must have app for anyone using Android that wants to further enhance their experience.

Microsoft is building software to convert your Android phone to Windows 10

It’s official, Microsoft is indeed testing a ROM that can be flashed on Android phones to have Windows 10 instead. Microsoft is working with Xiaomi currently to allow Mi 4 users the chance to test Windows 10 on their phones, but doesn’t plan to stop their.

A report from TechCrunch stated,

“Neither Microsoft nor Xiaomi provided specific details of the Windows 10 software being trialled, but TechCrunch understands from sources that it effectively overrides Android, turning the Xiaomi phone into a Windows 10 device complete with Microsoft services. (Which the company hopes will dazzle Android owners into making the switch.)

This is a ROM, based on Windows, that operates much like software from Cyanogen — a company Microsoft was incorrectly linked with an investment in — and other custom ROMs developed by the likes of Tencent and Baidu in China.

The ROM is thus designed to go beyond Microsoft’s Android apps and offer a native-like Windows experience on Android phones.”

Microsoft has been taking lengthy steps lately to expand their reach into Android, such as partnering with Samsung to include Microsoft apps in the Galaxy S6, as well as the talks with Cyanogen for investment. Their latest plan to completely convert and Android phone is an interesting one, however most Android users might not be pleased to hear that it is not a dual-boot software ROM, therefore it completely wipes Android from the phone.
