Blackberry and Google form new enterprise-focused partnership

We’ve heard a ton of whispers as of late regarding BlackBerry’s potential foray into the Android world, and it seems as though these rumors are picking up steam. Just last week popular leaker @evleaks posted a photo online of what’s supposedly dubbed the BlackBerry Venice – an AT&T-bound Android device with a slide-out keyboard. Concrete details have yet to surface when it comes to the rumored Venice handset. However, we’ve just gotten word of a new partnership that may lead to further credence that BlackBerry’s rumored Android handset may actually come in to fruition.
On Tuesday, July 7th, BlackBerry Limited (formerly RIM) registered for two different domain names: AndroidSecured.com and AndroidSecured.net. Navigating to the .net domain results in an error, but if you head to AndroidSecured.com, it redirects you to a curious page announcing a new partnership between BlackBerry and Google.

The website features a header that reads “Bring Android to work”, along with some information showcasing the security features of Android Lollipop and the newly-updated BES12 platform. Additionally, the website explains:
BlackBerry and Google are working closely together to set new standards in enterprise mobile security for organizations deploying Android devices.
BES12’s update to 12.2 brings a number of notable features including the ability to manage devices using Samsung KNOX, as well as Android for Work integration that will offer enhanced security and simplified management options. The website goes in to more detail explaining new features that Android and BES12 can offer enterprise customers and that a 60-day free trial of BES12 is also available for interested customers.

Although the slew of new security features being offered in BES12 are quite interesting, that’s not the most important thing here. We now know that BlackBerry and Google are working closely together on the enterprise front for organizations that would like to deploy Android devices to their employees. No, this doesn’t confirm nor deny the existence of an Android-powered BlackBerry device. But with a new partnership formed by the two companies and with Android Lollipop being showcased on the website’s forefront, this might be our first real evidence that we could see a BlackBerry-made device running Lollipop geared towards the enterprise.
After all, it’s clear that BlackBerry’s biggest selling points are its enterprise security features, and the company’s CEO even explained in an interview that BlackBerry is not opposed to building an Android device, as long as it’s secure. Perhaps the whole purpose behind the BlackBerry Venice is to showcase the security features BlackBerry has to offer, while also giving enterprise customers a more attractive OS and access to Google Play Services. BlackBerry doesn’t need to build an Android device to showcase what its hardware can do – the software is what matters, and that’s likely what we’re witnessing here.
Like I said previously, nothing is confirmed at this moment regarding the Venice. But this new partnership might be our first glimpse into what’s to come from the two companies. What are your thoughts? Do you have any speculation concerning this new partnership? Or do you think nothing will come of it? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Facebook lets you choose what appears in your News Feed
If you’re a regular Facebook user, you’ll know that the posts that appear in your News Feed are visible because of an algorithm. It’s part of the company’s mission to reduce post overload, but it can often mean that you’ll miss updates from some of your friends. In May, Zuckerberg and co. began testing a new feature that let users choose what they see in their feeds, but it was only available to a select few. From today, however, the new set of controls are rolling out to all.
So what’s new? Firstly, Facebook wants you to choose who you’ll see first when you open its apps. In the News Feed Preferences, you can select the profile picture of a friend, family member or your favorite page and their updates will be loaded before the rest of your timeline.
For those friends or pages who you probably should have removed eons ago, two updated features let you better control what you see from them. You can now zip through friends and pages and choose who you want to “unfollow,” allowing you to keep up appearances without having to suffer through numerous photos of cats, uninformed rants or needy status updates. Now it’s a handy list, you also can re-add friends that you feel might deserve a second chance.
Lastly, there’s a new Page suggestion tool that will automatically suggest pages based on your previous Likes. This is similar to Twitter’s tailored suggestions, which recommends people you might want to follow based on who you’ve just added. Facebook says that the updated News Feed controls will roll out on iOS devices today and arrive on Android and the official website “in the coming weeks.” If you’ve been crying out for a more personalized timeline, your voice has finally been heard.

Dear Veronica: File Formats and Follow-Up Freak Outs!
![]()
Last week, I asked for photos of your busted up (but still functional) phones, and you delivered! I noticed a trend of there being way more iPhones compared to Android devices that were sent in, so I’m trying to figure out: do you viewers just have more iPhones, or do Android users just chuck theirs when they get a chip because they’re less expensive? Anyway.
We also talk about the best file formats for your mixed-OS household, and I go on a bit of a rant about follow-up emails. Enjoy, and keep sending those questions to veronica@engadget.com, or using the hashtag #DearVeronica! See you next week!

Try to avoid frustration with Game of Balance – Game Review
Game of Balance Overview
Game of Balance is a game developed by a relative newcomer to the app development scene, HI365Studios. The object of the game is to keep a ball balanced on a pedestal. The challenge comes when the pedestal begins to move and change direction. Their Google Play description says:
Try not to fall off the edge, and stay on the ground as long as you can!
Just tap anywhere on the screen to change the direction of the ball,
but be very careful, the ball also needs time to stop!
How long can you hold on?
Can you become a master of balance?
Game of Balance Setup
The setup is pretty simple.
- Download and install the game from Google Play
- Login to Google’s Play Games service
Technically, you don’t have to login to the Play Games service to play the game. However, if you don’t, the leader boards and achievements will be unavailable to you.
Game of Balance Gameplay
The gameplay is dead simple. Every time you tap the screen, the ball will change direction, all while zen music plays in the background. The more you allow it to travel in the same direction, the faster the ball travels and, of course, the harder it is to keep the ball balanced on the pedestal. After the first few seconds or so of gameplay, the pedestal that the ball is balancing on begins to move. It’s still relatively easy to play. A few more seconds and the pedestal begins to change shape. The game is still relatively… wait, it fell off. Oh well, this is my first time playing, so the next time should be easier. 1,2,3,4,5,6 awe shoot. I fell off again. And so it goes every time I play.
If you’re having some flashbacks to Flappy Birds, well you wouldn’t be alone. This game is designed to be frustrating. You’ll fall off quickly in the beginning and the only way to improve is to play it even more. Even then, you’ll still fall off quickly. Especially when you try to show your friend how good you are at balancing the ball. And, of course, your friend turns out to be a balancing prodigy and beats your high score his first time. This is all hypothetical of course.

Target Audience
If you liked playing Flappy Birds, you will most likely enjoy this game. If not, then you might want to at least give it a shot because the game mechanics are different and the zen music playing in the background does take the edge off, just a little.

Action Launcher 3.5 puts your beloved Android apps in the search bar
The ubiquitous search box widget at the top of your Android mobile device is getting some new tricks. Chris Lacy, creator of the Action Launcher app, announced the release of Action Launcher 3.5 on Tuesday. The new version builds on AL 3.0, which allowed users to match the widget’s color to their background theme (as well as the app drawer) or scroll through an alphabetical app list accessible from the home screen. The app also features slick shortcuts for both folders and widgets called covers and shutters, respectively. And with the release of AL 3.5, users can fully customize the search box by incorporating apps, shortcuts and even menu groups directly into the bar itself.
“I’m very happy with how the Quickbar has turned out,” Lacy wrote on a Google+ post. “It may not look like it, but this feature was an absolutely mammoth design and engineering undertaking.” And from the looks of this update, why stick with Google’s stock launcher?

Android gets nearly 5,000 new strains of malware per day
Analytics firm G DATA has new data about malware in Android. In its Q1 2015 Mobile Malware report, it explains that almost half a million new strains were discovered from January to the end of March. To put that into perspective, this means that a new strain appears every 18 seconds, which equates to about 5,000 a day.
Supposedly, Android apps allow for easier access than their iOS counterparts. Indeed, if that is true (and it probably is), it is easy to see why Android is more likely to catch the attention of hackers. TechSpot adds that a recent study by Pulse Secure suggests that around 97% of this malware targets Google’s OS. This is 6.4% higher than for Q4 2014 and almost 21% higher than Q1 2014.
Online banking and online retail only compound the problem. According to G DATA, since about 78% of internet users shop through sites and about 50% use their mobile devices for online banking, hackers are more likely to create subscription hacks, ransomware, and remote money transfers scams.
Although the numbers might be surprising, the reality is not. There is a reason why there is such a vast selection of anti-virus and anti-malware apps on Google Play. As a precaution, it’s a good idea to read reviews of some of these and choose an option, if you have not yet done so.
