XBMC’s Kodi media player officially hits the Play Store

Kodi’s media player got a name change last year and now it has something even better — official Android status. The app formerly known as XBMC is now available on the Google Play store for all takers. It actually arrived to the store last month in beta form, but prior to that could only be sideloaded on Android. Version 15 (codenamed Isengard) now supports Android 5-specific features like 4K and variable refresh rates on certain Android TV devices, like NVIDIA’s Shield. Another new trick on all platforms is “adaptive seeking” that lets you search material faster by tapping a key several times.

There’s also new audio and subtitle lists, an updated add-on manager, improved video queuing and better live TV closed-captioning. It has other minor tweaks and fixes (check the source), and the XBMC foundation said that the next release would support DirectX 11. You can grab the app now on Google Play, but just remember that Kodi is a deep app, so leave yourself some time (and possibly some help) to get it working.

YouTube for Android will play vertical videos in full screen

There comes a time in every person’s life when they realize that they can’t get people behave properly. As much as we all might want to stop people from recording vertical videos, the Periscopes and Snapchats of this world have made these clips so prevalent that, sadly, they’re just not going to go away. Giving in to the inevitable, YouTube’s Android App is getting the ability to play vertical videos in full screen, rather than constraining them to an awkward letterbox designed for landscape clips. The feature was found by AndroidPolice in version 10.28 of the app, which is likely to hit Google Play at some point in the near future. Before you sprint to download the APK ahead of its official launch, however, just remember that this means that the bad guys have won.

Maps version 9.2 adds a timeline for your location history [APK Download]

Ever wanted to know where you’ve been but can’t remember? Google knows! Not only does Google track your location at any point in time, but a new timeline feature in version 9.2 of the Maps app allows a user to browse exactly where they’ve been over a period of time.

There’s a new section in Maps called “Your Timeline” that will provide a detailed history of where you’ve been. It’s pretty much the same thing as Google’s Location history page but provides a vast amount more data and context to show your location history. You’ll be able to see the places you’ve been, the times you’ve been there, and even how you travelled between points. What’s pretty cool is that any photos taken at that location will also appear there, assuming you’re using Google Photos.

If you notice any mistakes or inaccuracies in the data it has collected, since Google sometimes estimates this location data, then you are able to edit certain points to amend that.

Under another section “Your Places” they’ll be a list of “Places You’ve Been” that will list exactly that; you can even edit the names of these places to something better known to you, like Home perhaps or even a local childhood park you had a nickname for.

You can wait for the Maps update to hit the Google Play Store, or grab the APK and sideload it using the link. For a full teardown and detailed analysis of the update, head over to the source.

Here’s your clearest look yet at the next Moto G

Motorola's 2015 Moto G

If there was any doubt left that Motorola will unveil a new Moto G at its July 28th event, Swiss retailer Digitec just removed it. The store has posted listings for a “3rd gen” Moto G that offers the clearest look yet at what this budget smartphone will likely deliver. Besides a fresher design, it could be far more potent than its predecessor — Digitec claims that the new G touts a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, LTE and a 1.7GHz quad-core chip (likely the 64-bit Snapdragon 610). If it weren’t for the 8GB of expandable storage, this could easily pass for a mid-range phone. You probably won’t have to pay mid-range prices, though, since the G tentatively costs $245 off-contract in Switzerland. We’d still take the listings with a grain of salt, since retailers occasionally botch specs. If they’re accurate, though, they suggest that you’re in for a treat if you want an affordable, near-stock Android phone this summer.

How to turn a $39 Fire TV Stick into the ultimate media center

Amazon’s Prime Day certainly evoked a flurry of mixed emotions. Many people were disappointed, but many were also able to score a deal. Personally, I scored Amazon’s Fire TV Stick for $25. Amazon reportedly sold hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Sticks within a 1-hour period. So if you want to get the most out of your Fire TV Stick, make sure and pay attention.

First let’s talk about why the Fire TV Stick makes such a great platform for a media center.

Low Price

Even at its $39 full retail price, the Fire TV Stick is a real steal. It’s closest competitors are priced higher and have lower specs. Yes the Chromecast is technically cheaper $5 cheaper than the Fire TV Stick, but it’s dead in the water without another device to initiate the media streaming and it has nowhere near the capabilities of the Fire TV Stick.

Multi-purpose

The Fire TV Stick runs Amazon’s Android off-shoot called Fire OS. Because Android is at the core of Fire OS, the Fire TV Stick can play games and use other apps found on Amazon’s App Store. You can also side-load apps from other sources onto the device, but we’ll talk about that a little later.

Fire TV Stick Specs

The specs on the Amazon Fire TV Stick are impressive for its $39 price.

  • Processor: Broadcom Capri 28155, dual-core 2xARM A9 up to 1 Ghz
  • GPU: VideoCore4
  • Storage: 8 GB internal
  • Memory: 1 GB
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: Dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi (MIMO); supports 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi networks.
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth 3.0 with support for the following profiles: HID, SPP
  • 1080p video streaming
  • 7.1 Dolby Digital surround sound

How to set it up

The first thing you have to do is connect it your wireless network. This is a fairly easy thing to do and the Fire TV Stick will walk you through the process.

If you purchased your Fire TV stick from Amazon, then it will already come attached to your Amazon account. If you purchased it elsewhere you will either need to sign into your Amazon account or you will need to create one. Once you’ve logged in then you’re just about done. Just download your favorite apps and enjoy.

Legal media options

There are several options here. The Fire TV Stick supports just about every streaming platform out there. Here is a sizable, but not comprehensive by any means, list of popular apps.

If you wish to play your own media, there are a few options for you. You should be aware that the Fire TV Stick does not support USB storage, so any media that you wish to play will need to first be downloaded to a shared location on your network or downloaded locally to the Fire TV Stick itself.

The first option is Plex. In order to use Plex, you first need to download the Plex media server found here. You’ll need to run through the setup prompts and select the folder where your media is located. Once you have done this, Plex will scan your media and download cover art and media information. While this is happening you’ll want to make sure and download the Plex app from the App Store. You’ll then be able to browse and play the media you have on your computer.

The second option that I’ll cover is VLC. VLC allows for local and network playback of media. However, as the local storage on the Fire TV Stick is limited to 8GB, you’ll want to stick to a networked storage solution. The upside of VLC is that it does not require a secondary media server to play media. The downside is that it does not give you the cover art and media center options of Plex.

The third and final option I’ll cover is Kodi, formally known as XBMC. Kodi is my preferred option as it does not require a media server to be running on a separate PC, but it will still scan your media and download the associated art and media information. Kodi also allows for 3rd party add-ons and skins that can customize and add functionality to Kodi.

Kodi isn’t an officially supported app on the Fire TV Stick. so you’ll need to sideload it onto your device. This can be a fairly complicated process, as one method requires you to use ADB command line. I won’t cover this as there are other much easier options.

The option I’ll be covering is the Fire Installer app found on Google Play. Before you fire up the app, you’ll need to download Kodi from Google Play and install it on your phone or tablet because Fire Installer will only install apps to your Fire TV Stick that are already installed on your phone or tablet.

Once you have installed Kodi on your phone or tablet go ahead and fire up the Fire Installer app. You’ll first be greeted by a set of setup instructions. The short version is that you have to enable ADB debugging in the Fire TV Stick’s settings and enter the Fire TV Stick’s IP address into the Fire Installer app. From there it’s as easy as selecting Kodi from the list of installed apps and pushing it over to your Fire TV. Keep in mind that this process will take a few minutes as Kodi can be a fairly large app. You can also use this method to install other apps not found on Amazon’s App Store.

Fire TV Stick ADBFire TV Stick IP

It’s important to note that side-loaded apps will not show up in the recent apps list. In order to launch the apps, you’ll need to go to Applications found in Settings, select Manage Applications, and then select your app and launch it from there.

Other media options

Warning: The following information is for educational purposes only. Neither the author nor AndroidGuys.com endorses this or any other method that will allow for the illegal consumption of copyrighted material. We do encourage you to use any of the legal options found in this same article and to support the copyright holders by legally purchasing the media.

There are a plethora of 3rd party plugins for Kodi. Many of which allow for the streaming of copyrighted media for free. I won’t be endorsing any one particular plugin, but I will be talking about the Fusion Installer from the guys at TVAddons.ag. The Fusion Installer will give you access to install individual plugins one at a time, or the Hub Wizard which will preconfigure Kodi with the most popular add-ons. The Hub Wizard is the second easiest method.

Which is the easiest method? The crew at TVAddons have created a version of Kodi, which comes with the most popular add-ons preinstalled and preconfigured. If you want to try this method, then it’s as easy as downloading the TVMC app from their website and sideloading it onto your device.

If you’ve already installed Kodi  then you’ll want to use the aforementioned method. Here are the instructions from their website.

  • Step 1: Navigate to the “File manager” tab under the “SYSTEM” menu.
  • Step 2: Click on the “Add source” option.
  • Step 3: Select the top text input box marked “<None>” under the “Enter the paths of browse for the media locations” field.
  • Step 4: Using the on-screen keyboard, type in “http://fusion.tvaddons.ag” without quotations, and then press the “Done” button. In case you’re having trouble, press the “Symbols” button to insert the colon and forward slashes.
  • Step 5: Select the bottom text input box under the “Enter a name for the media Source” field.
  • Step 6: Using the on-screen keyboard, type in “fusion” without quotations, and then press the “Done” button.
  • Step 7: Press the “OK” button at the bottom of the window.
  • Step 8: You’ll now notice that “fusion” is listed within the “File manager” window.
  • Step 9: Return to the main menu, then Navigate to the “Settings” tab under the “SYSTEM” menu.
  • Step 10: Select the “Add-ons” option from the left side menu bar.
  • Step 11: Press the “Ok” button when prompted with the “First run help…” dialog.
  • Step 10: Select the “Install from zip file” option.
  • Step 11: Select the “fusion” folder from the listing.
  • Step 12: You’ll now be able to open whichever folder from which you wish to install add-ons for Kodi.
  • Recommended Method: You’ll find easy configuration tools such as the Config Wizard, Addon Installer, and Fresh Start program add-ons within the “start-here” folder.
  • Alternative Method: If you’d like to install your desired add-ons for Kodi the “old school” method by manually installing your desired repositories and enabling each add-on one by one, you’ll find all the best Kodi repositories within the “xbmc-repos” folder.
  • Congratulations! You’ve now configured the Fusion Installer for Kodi. You’ll want take a look at our Config Wizard and Addon Installer guides at this point.

What do you think? Are you going to give the Fire TV Stick a try? Are you already using it? Let us know in the comments below.

Google Nexus 2015 rumor roundup

nexus 6 first impressions (13 of 21)

The second half of the year is going to bring us some amazing smartphones. Among the most anticipated announcements are those related to Google’s popular Nexus series. Rumors tend to start blazing through the internet very early on, and this year is not the exception.

It is no surprise to see the industry having such a high regard for the Nexus line-up. These are, after all, Google’s demonstration of where they want Android to go. Quality hardware, a pure Google experience and timely updates have always been the Nexus stamp, which has helped the brand gain a major follower base.

Where does Google want to take the most popular mobile operating system now? What will the upcoming Nexus device(s) be like? We have gathered plenty of (unofficial) details to share, so let’s dig right into the goods.

This article will continue to be updated as new information begins emerging. Bookmark this page and keep checking it if you want to stay in the loop! The article will also be pushed to the front of our home page whenever it’s edited.

Nexus 5 (2015) from LG?

The Nexus 6 offered performance and specs without compromises, but the phone wasn’t exactly for everyone, due to one main reason. Its massive 5.96-inch screen and gargantuan body will definitely make it an uncomfortable phone to bear, especially for those who have smaller hands. This forced Nexus fans to stick with an older-generation handset if they wanted to have a traditionally sized phone.

Google Nexus 5 black vs white aa 2

Google may be onto something this year. Recent rumors suggest there will be a couple Nexus phones launched this year. One of them would be manufactured by LG and reportedly resemble the phone maker’s Nexus 5. In fact, some believe the new phone could be a direct successor, a Nexus 5 (2015) if you will.

LG’s Nexus device is reportedly codenamed Bullhead and is rumored to come with a Snapdragon 808 processor, a 5.2-inch display and a 2700 mAh battery. So far this is all we know about this product, though.

More rumors revolve around a Huawei Nexus phone, so we will focus on that one for now.

Huawei Nexus

Reports of a Huawei Nexus have been making the rounds for a while, and the good news is these reports come from multiple sources, including some highly reliable ones. So while LG’s Nexus is shrouded in mystery, we can be almost totally confident that Huawei and Google will launch a Nexus phone this year, and we also have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Here’s the rundown.

Design

We have seen or heard very few details on what this Huawei-made Nexus phone could look like, but we can tell you one thing – it will be large. Rumors suggest the phone’s screen will measure 5.7-inches, which just so happens to be the same screen size as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

According to @evleaks, the Huawei Nexus will feature a metallic construction and a fingerprint sensor. In other words, it’s rough outline may be pretty similar to the Mate series. In fact, there’s a good chance the Mate 9 (due this fall) will contain hints at what to expect from the Google-branded device.

If Huawei’s latest work is any testament, we should see a well-engineered phone with a solid build quality. The Chinese manufacturer is no rookie, and they can make some amazingly well-built gadgets. Let’s show you some examples.

Display

As we mentioned above, the upcoming Huawei Nexus smartphone should come with a sizable 5.7-inch panel. What we didn’t tell you was that, like the Nexus 6, the new Nexus should also feature a QHD resolution display (2560x1440p). This entails the panel will have a pixel density of 515 pixels per inch.

Pixels should be packed in a little tighter than in the Nexus 6, due to the slight size difference, but it’s likely not a very noticeable upgrade.

Specifications & hardware

The little evidence we have tells us this phone should be quite powerful. While the new LG Nexus is expected to go with the slightly sub-par (yet still capable) Snapdragon 808 chip, Huawei is not skimping out on performance one bit.

Most rumors state the new Huawei handset will come with a Snapdragon 810 chipset. Evan Blass (@evleaks) claims it will pack a Snapdragon 820 SoC. Regardless of the outcome, Huawei making a move to Qualcomm would represent a significant change, as they have stayed exclusive to their very own Kirin processors so far. Maybe this is one of the conditions for working with Google? After all, while Google is known to have worked with more exotic processors in the past (like Texas Instruments and Nvidia), the processor manufacturer has a huge role in ensuring support and timely updates through the lifetime of a device. Perhaps Huawei’s Kirin is just too risky for Google from this perspective?

Huawei-Ascend-Mate-7-Beautiful

Other hardware specifications continue to be a mystery, but Evan did say the phone should also come with a fingerprint reader, a first for Nexus devices. This would make total sense, as Google announced at Google IO that Android M is to integrate native support for fingerprint readers. This will enable users to make purchases on the Google Play Store, unlock devices, protect sensitive data and more.

There’s also a good chance the next Nexus will feature USB Type-C, which Google already adopted for the new Chromebook Pixel and hinted at for future Android smartphones. As for microSD, while Android M has gotten a bit friendlier to external storage, we would be very surprised if Google reversed its stance and included a microSD slot on a Nexus device.

Camera

The upcoming Nexus devices’ cameras may be the subject we have the least information on. We have heard some rumors say the LG Nexus successor will come with a dual-camera setup, similar to the in the HTC One series. In addition, some believe Huawei’s Nexus phone could be based on the Huawei Honor 6 Plus, which also happens to sport a couple cameras in the back.

Many would consider this a gimmick, as its most popular functions are to distinguish distance and allow for digitally applied bokeh effects (otherwise known as “blurry background”). While that may be a valid argument, I wouldn’t discard the possibility of Google adopting this dual-camera technique. The Mountain View-based company has been playing around with similar technology in Project Tango, and they do appear to be well-invested in the concept.

HTC One M9+-32

If the LG Nexus rumor winds up being true, we do hope the Korean manufacturer makes life good by implementing the LG G4’s camera. Nexus phones are not exactly known for having exceptional shooters (Nexus 6 was better), so it would definitely be a welcomed addition.

Getting back to the Huawei Nexus, camera info is completely absent. With the implementation of a superior Camera API in Lollipop, the conditions are set for a truly great camera experience, provided Google and Huawei won’t skimp on hardware. Unfortunately, that happened before, so it remains to be seen whether the Huawei Nexus will buck the trend.

Software

Nexus phones characterize themselves by staying true to the Pure Google experience; we have no doubt this will also be the case with the new Nexus phone(s). Furthermore, we also know the next-generation Nexus handsets should be the first to launch with Android M, Google’s new version of their mobile OS.

Improvements over Lollipop include granular permissions, custom Chrome tabs, battery improvements, USB-C compatibility, app state backup and native biometric support. You can see a detailed explanation of all Android M features in our announcement post, as well as our detailed “Diving into Android M” article series.

Android M Easter Egg-7

Pricing and release date

Most Nexus devices have been launched either in October or November. We expect 2015’s devices to follow suit, and previous rumors support these suspicions. Evan Blass’ sources previously stated they should ship in Q4, while The Information’s insiders suggest it will be in “the Fall”. Pricing-wise, some think the Huawei Nexus will be more upscale, due to the top specs and metal constructions, while LG’s Nexus could follow in the tracks of the popular Nexus 5. But there’s no guarantee that will be the case, at least for now.

Wrap up

2015 is looking to be a great year for Google. If most of this information proves to be true, the new Nexus products will be the phones to beat – especially Huawei’s. As we mentioned above: don’t forget to keep it tuned to Android Authority and this specific article, as it will continue to get updates as soon as new information emerges.

For now, let’s just hit the comments and share our thoughts on these rumors. What would you like to see in the new Nexus phones? Are you signing up for any of them? Many of you are probably happy a normal-sized Nexus phone is likely to hit the market again!

Deepify: Photo-to-3D Wallpaper (app review)

deepifyOverview

Live wallpapers are one of the things in Android that no other OS has. Even the raved iPhone lacks this beautiful addition. Live wallpapers make your screen more lively and offer a more immersive Android experience. Deepify: Photo-to-3D Wallpaper allows Android users to set custom photos as live wallpapers. Converting your normal images to beautiful 3D experiences.

Setup

The developer of Deepify: Photo-to-3D Wallpaper, Games by Dad, has provided an easy-to-follow guide for the setup of the app. I was able to set it up in less than a minute, its that simple! After the basic setup, you will see a standard set of 3D images and effects on your screen. It also displays some tips on-screen that help in understanding the functionality of the app better. For setting your own image just click on the Photo 1 option, set the required image and effect, click home and you are all set!

Function

After enabling Deepify: Photo-to-3D Wallpaper, double tapping on the screen brings you to the settings section of the app. It contains the options to set your custom images as wallpapers and allows for further customization. A maximum of two photos is allowed to be set in the free version. Upto 20 photos can be set in the pro version. The photos that can be set should either be shot from Google Camera Lens Blur Effect or be a png image with a RGBA character. Upon setting the image, the user can customize the photo effects that will be overlayed on top of the image. There are several 3D effects to choose from and allows for purchase of more effects as well.

Deepify: Photo-to-3D Wallpaper also gives you the option to export your set images as a gif or a bootanimation. This means you can really get creative and experiment with a wide variety of images and effects combination. We can all say our Goodbyes to Google+ Photos soon

Goodbye Google+ Photos. Back in May, at Google I/O 2015, Google introduced Google Photos. A cross-platform photo back-up service that not only works with Android, but also has iOS and web compatibility. When Google Photos was announced, it was expected that Google+ Photos would be leaving, but there was no mention of when.

It turns out that August 1st will be that day. Today, via Google+ (coincidentally enough), the Google+, Google+ page, announced when photo backup would be shut down. The service will be shut down for Android first, then the web and iOS later on.

If you’re still using Google+ Photos, now is a great time to make the switch. You may have seen a prompt in Google+ Photos on Android with a link to download the new Google Photos. Don’t worry, all your photos and videos will still be saved and available after you switch to the new, stand-alone Google Photos app. With the new app you’ll still be able to backup, edit, and share your photos and videos, with unlimited storage, automatic organization, and more.

If you’re worried about all your images that have already been backed up via Google+ Photos, don’t be. You will still be able to view all of your previously backed up photos via the new Google Photos app. Some of us have already started to see prompts from the old app, encouraging us to download the new Google Photos app.

We have previously covered everything Google Photos has to offer to everyone, and is really a great option, regardless of the platform, to backup everything up. Especially with the unlimited storage that is offered.

Latest Android Humble Bundle features NeoGeo’s best games

If you’re prone to throwing your controller when a game gets the best of you, perhaps the latest Humble Bundle isn’t quite for you. Maybe. That’s because the outfit’s offering up a slew of classic NeoGeo games for the very low price of paying however much you want. So, for that very flexible price range you get Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Blazing Star, The King of Fighters ’97, Metal Slug 2 (pictured above) and Metal Slug X on Android. Should you pay more than the (current) average price of $4.56 you’ll also get access to Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Showdown II, Metal Slug 3 and yet-to-be-announced surprises.

Android Central notes that if you grabbed ’em all separately it’d run you $23, so if you feel like throwing more money Humble’s way you can snag a Metal Slug t-shirt celebrating NeoGeo’s 25th anniversary. That isn’t expected to ship until October, but you could always use the next few months to brush up on your shooting skills and wear it with pride, right?
