‘Skysphere’ will be your dream living space, can be completely controlled with Android app

dsc_6233 (large)

We all like having our own little space, where we can simply be ourselves and do whatever. This is usually just a little room somewhere in the house, but there’s some people who will not conform with having such an average man cave. Plastic engineer and graphic designer Jono Williams went above and beyond, building the best lounging room I have ever seen.

He calls it the ‘Skysphere’, a name that is very descriptive of the floating room’s aesthetics. Erected in a hill surrounded by trees, the Skysphere looks like something coming out of a science fiction film. And it’s not only its look that is innovative, this living space was designed in a very high-tech fashion.

For starters, the tower runs on solar energy alone. Its panels were discretely installed on top, and can power the space for 2 days, making it a perfect weekend getaway.

Lighting and security systems were based on an Android device connected to an IOIO development board. This allows him to control everything from his phone, as well as voice commands.

Jono confesses his favorite part of the Skysphere is the unique built-in couch cooler, though. Refreshments are always at arm’s length and the fridge will even send a notification when it’s running low.

That pretty much sums up Jono Williams’ man cave. I must say this thing is legit! We know he spent about 3 years building it – now I am wondering how much it costed him. I would love to get myself something similar! Wouldn’t you?

Next-gen Moto G box shots spoil almost everything

Moto G 3rd-generation out of the box

The third-generation Moto G has been one of Motorola’s poorest-kept secrets in recent memory, and things certainly aren’t getting any better this weekend. A Brazilian retailer has inadvertently posted (and promptly pulled) unboxing photos that confirm nearly everything you’d care to know about Moto’s latest budget smartphone. The pics show that the new G will pack a 1.4GHz quad-core processor (up from the current model’s 1.2GHz chip), a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front shooter and colorful shells. It’s also safe to say that at least some models will tout 5-inch 720p screens, 16GB of storage, dual SIM slots and (in Brazil’s case) digital TV tuning.

There are still some unknowns, such as whether or not there will be significant differences between versions — will you get more RAM and storage if you have a little extra cash on hand? Even so, it’s reasonable to say that the G likely to show up at Motorola’s July 28th event will be a welcome but incremental upgrade — it’s the next-gen Moto X that should be the star of the show.

Frontback shutdown shows that selfies don’t equal success

Frontback is sad

The selfie craze might not be slowing down any time soon, but that doesn’t mean that self-portraiture products are a license to print money. Need proof? Just look at Frontback. After two years of investment and hype from the likes of Reddit’s Alexis Ohanian and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, the selfie-plus-rear-photo service is shutting down. The social network will wind down as of August 15th, and you’ll have until September 15th to download all your pictures. Frontback’s iOS client will be reduced to a camera app during the transition, while the Android version is disappearing.

As the creators note, there was a big difference between creating a selfie-oriented social platform and sustaining it. While Frontback did rack up 2 million users, it took newcomers “too much time and effort” to understand the app — people tended to use it on an “infrequent” basis after signing up. In other words, it’s not enough to use selfies as a main selling point. While big services like Instagram and Snapchat thrive on “here I am” snapshots, it’s really their simple concepts and strong community features that keep people hooked.

Super QuickHook game swings by the Google Play Store

super-quickhooks

Need a good dose of mobile gaming for the weekend? Worry not, for developer Noodlecake Studios has released Super QuickHooks on Android; it is packed with enough action and addiction to keep you entertained for hours on end.

Super QuickHooks is actually quite an old mobile game. It was released back in 2010 for iOS, and fans have been hoping to see it hit the Google Play Store since then. I suppose sometimes it really is better late than never… but 5 years? Give us Android users some love!

The game is fast-paced and very entertaining. It consists of “conquering Eagle Mountain” by using a grappling hook to swing your way through ice caverns, volcanic caves, meadows and other rough terrain. In a way, it does seem like a more elaborated, Flappy Bird-like game. It’s not easy and will definitely keep you on your toes.

Super QuickHooks is much more complex than most direct competitors, though. It consists of 24 levels with multiple paths and even hidden areas. Furthermore, the character and equipment can be upgraded, so the game certainly has its RPG elements. You can even ghost race your friends and enter infinite avalanche mode.

Don’t let that pixelated resolution scare you! Syuper QuickHooks is fun and very well-developed. The only downside is that you will have to spend a few bucks if you want to swing your way around for hours. This title costs $2.99, but it is very well worth it if you are into this style of games.

Super QuickHooks hasn’t picked up too many users just yet, but will probably do soon. Especially considering its reviews are great, and mostly come from people who loved the game on their iOS devices. Are you buying?

Microsoft Arrow Launcher for Android now in private beta (APK download)

arrow-launcher

There’s a plethora of great Android launchers out there (here’s a list of our favorite), but very few of them come from large companies like Microsoft. Though the Redmond giant is one of Google’s biggest competitors, they are proving to be much more platform friendly by creating a new Android launcher.

The application goes by the name of Arrow Launcher, and it is currently under private beta. As you can expect, not everyone has access to it just yet. You can get your hands on it a couple ways, which we will describe later in the post. For now, let’s just tell you what this new launcher is all about.

My experience with the Arrow Launcher

Let’s start by telling you this is no simple Metro UI clone or anything of the sort. In fact, I would have never guessed it was made by Micrososft if I had no knowledge of the project. The tech company is putting effort into making a launcher that is optimized for the Android experience and simplifies your usage. In fact, this looks nothing like what Microsoft usually does with its own software.

The launcher is simple and aims to put all your relevant content front and center. It won’t be the best product for those who get a kick out of customizing their experience in every single way, as you can barely make any changes to it, but that is part of the beauty of Arrow Launcher. You install it and forget about it.

What Arrow Launcher can offer is a very simple and clean interface that will help you avoid unnecessary steps just to access your applications, contacts, messages and other content. The main home screen is nothing but a full board of apps that you are likely to use.

The launcher’s home page compiles your usage data and groups your apps in two sections: “Recent” (1 row) and “Frequent” (3 rows). This makes it incredibly easy to find your most relevant applications, and it should dynamically change as your habits evolve. In the time I have been using it, I hardly find the need to go into the app drawer.

Swype to the left and you will similarly find your recent and frequent contacts. The system does mix calls, messages emails and emails in this section. Alternatively, navigate all the way to the page on the right end and you will be met by a Notes & Reminders section, where you can organize your errands as you wish.

That’s it for home screens. No hassles or complicated pages – just the bare necessities. Now, let’s turn to the dock. This part of the launcher is definitely among my favorites, because it’s where you will have the most choice. The user can literally drag the dock up to display a whole other section with recent contacts, a few option buttons and an extra set of dock shortcuts. These can be edited and customized to show whichever apps you prefer, just in case the frequent and recent ones are not always on point.

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Furthermore, the app launcher is amazingly simple to use. All your applications are alphabetized and it’s a breeze navigating through them by swiping up and down (the traditional way). It’s also possible to drag your finger through the letters on the right side in order to more easily navigate through your long list of apps, or you can simply perform a search on the top area.

Conclusion

This pretty much embodies what this launcher is all about. It’s so easy it’s almost ridiculous, but that can be a good thing for those who don’t want to deal with spending time working on their launchers. Users have to sacrifice customization to get quick access to everything, though. It’s not your traditional launcher; I would probably say it’s most closely related to Nokia’s Z Launcher style.

I will continue to use it for a few days, so you can go ahead and ask me questions about it in the comments. So far I can say I like its functionality, but the geek in me believes it leaves much to be desired in customization matters. I like keeping tight control on how my UI is organized. Arrow Launcher is for those who want a “smarter” launcher that can do the heavy lifting for them.

How to get Microsoft’s Arrow Launcher

As mentioned above, Arrow Launcher is not public just yet, but it’s not necessarily hard to get your hands on it. There are two ways to test Arrow Launcher.

  1. Request to be added to the Arrow Launcher Beta Google+ community.
  2. Download the APK file and manually install Arrow Launcher.

Fan-made ‘GTA V’ interactive map app puts Rockstar’s to shame

Grand Theft Auto V really seems like the gift that keeps on giving. The latest present? An unofficial map app (Android, iOS and web) that’s been updated with collectibles locations from the current-gen releases like Peyote plants that let you play as sharks, eagles and more — yes, flying around as a bird of prey is bizarre as it sounds. The differences between this and the official app are pretty major, too. As VG24/7 reports, you can add personal notes to the map, track your collectibles progress and even switch between atlas and satellite views of the terrain. Future plans include making streets searchable by name. Interested? Hit the source links below to grab it for your device of choice.

Fallout Shelter finally has an Android release date

Fallout fans with Android devices have been feeling a little jilted ever since E3, when Todd Howard, Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios, announced that along with Fallout 4, Bethesda had developed a free mobile Fallout game called Fallout Shelter. Not only that, but it was available to download that same day, for iOS devices. Needless to say, we were a little disappointed. Ok, lets face it, we were a lot disappointed.

Fallout Shelter Welcome Screen

It wasn’t long until Pete Hines, Vice President of PR/Marketing at Bethesda tweeted that the Android version should be out next month.

Needless to say, our nerd rage was satiated, at least, a little. Today Bethesda took to Twitter to announce that Fallout Shelter would be available to Android users on August 13th this year.

At least we now have a firm date. Are you excited for Fallout Shelter? Do you buy into the hype? Let us know in the comments.

Free mobile game ‘Fallout Shelter’ hits Android in August

Fallout Shelter is a nifty little mobile game that puts you in charge of your very own post-apocalyptic Vault in the Fallout universe. It’s your job to make sure the Vault Dwellers are as happy, healthy and protected as possible — which is sometimes trickier than it sounds. Fallout Shelter launched for iOS on June 14th directly after Bethesda’s E3 2015 conference, and now we know when it’s coming to Android devices: August 13th.

Bethesda announced Fallout Shelter during a conference dominated by big, new games, most notably Doom and Fallout 4. As a free iOS game (with in-app purchases, of course), it was a pleasant surprise for many hungry Fallout fans. Fallout Shelter wasn’t the only mobile-focused announcement to come out of that conference, either: The Pip-Boy Edition of Fallout 4 comes with a real-life Pip-Boy made to fit smartphones (well, most smartphones) loaded up with a new companion app.
