New Android Wear-powered Huawei Watch shown off in two promo videos

Huawei has plans to unveil their first Android Wear-powered smartwatch, the Huawei Watch, at MWC 2015. Ahead of the company’s press event which will be held Sunday, March 1st, Huawei has released two new promotional videos showcasing the new watch. The videos were just recently posted on the company’s YouTube channel. The first, entitled “Huawei Watch: The timeless design story” features a few Huawei execs explaining their ideas behind the design of the watch. The second video, and arguably the cheesier of the two, is called “Huawei Watch: Your Ultimate Companion to Make It Possible”. This video shows a man trekking through the wilderness to catch up with his friends, Huawei Watch in tow.
Just based off of the promotional materials we’ve seen so far, this Huawei Watch may be the most attractive smartwatch out there. Performance aside the Watch has a small, completely round display, minimal bezels, a heart rate sensor, a sapphire display and interchangeable leather and metal straps. It seems to be less bulky than the Motorola Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R while still featuring a round display. But of course, performance will play a big role in whether or not the Watch is worth buying.
We don’t have any information on the exact specifications, price or release date quite yet, so we’ll have to wait until Sunday to get more information. While we wait, check out the two promo videos below to see if you’d consider this watch over the competition.

So what do you think? Will this be your next Android Wear device?
Unannounced Huawei Watch exposes itself in Barcelona
This weekend will see the the arrival of new phones, tablets, wearables, and more as hardware manufacturers head out to Barcelona for MWC 2015. Spotted inside Barcelona Airport by incoming press members is the advertisement seen above. It shows an unannounced smartwatch belonging to Huawei promoted for everyone to see. That’s right, Huawei has exposed its own product prior to any sort of official announcement.
The advertisement displays what is called the Huawei Watch and the following tagline: “Timeless design. Smart within.” Below that, Huawei offers an explanation of both adjectives. The Huawei Watch is timeless because of its classic design while being smart due to Android Wear.
The device does look very classic and stylish, so it will be interesting to see where the Chinese company sets its price. Also, the watch faces seen in the advertisement match the class of the Huawei Watch’s design.

Ingress for Android Wear is going to be a thing starting next month, says Niantic Labs
Gaming on Android Wear, as a whole, is pretty much non-existent. Whether you think games should be on wearable devices or not, it’s disappointing to see that not more developers have had a stab at innovating and appropriating games for smartwatches, but it appears Niantic Labs has already been busy behind the scenes. Ingress for Android […]

Android Wear support coming to Google’s Ingress game

For all of you die-hard Ingress fans out there, your missions are about to get much easier. Android Wear support is coming to Ingress, and will be rolled out sometime next month. Just like any other Android Wear app, you’ll still need to use your phone to run the application, but you’ll soon be able to glance down at your wrist for important Ingress updates while you’re playing.
For those who need clarification, Ingress is an augmented reality app developed by Google’s Niantic Labs back in 2012. Players can create and perform missions, allowing users to attack, reinforce or defend “portals” based on local landmarks. The game puts players either on the “enlightened” side or the “resistance” side, allowing them to battle against one another in hopes to gain a win.
A big problem with this game, however, is that users would have to use their smartphones to find different landmarks around their towns, making them keep their smartphones out while playing. With Android Wear support, players will get to keep their smartphones in their pockets while only using their smartwatches for guidance. Notifications will show up in the form of a Google Now-like card, telling you if a portal is in range or if it’s under attack. Here’s a preview of what the game will look like on a Wear device:

Android Wear support will be extremely convenient for users who play the game while out on a run or running errands. You can look for the update to hit the Play Store sometime next month. If you have yet to play Ingress, head to the Google Play Store link below to download it for free.
[New Android Wear App] AutoWear is a complete automation tool for your smartwatch
Android Wear smartwatches are pretty cool as they are, but if you are looking to step up your automation game, then look no further than AutoWear. It’s a Tasker plugin that will allow you to automate just about anything you can think of. It was developed by João Dias (joaomgcd) who also created AutoRemote and AutoVoice.
By utilizing Tasker, AutoRemote, and AutoVoice, the possibilities are endless. You can open up a voice command screen to send voice commands directly to AutoVoice or you can use predefined Google Now commands to do whatever you want. You can utilize floating icons that you can access from any screen. You can even set a particular task to start when shaking your watch. Like I said, the possibilities are endless, and he put together a video (see below) showing you a slew of examples.
The app is free to try for the first seven days, and if you like it, you can own it for good with an in-app purchase.

Android Wear smartwarches now total 1 million
Early this month it was reported by Canalys that about 720,000 Android Wear devices were shipped during 2014. Of course that figure didn’t even necessarily represent the total amount that consumers purchased.
As of right now, it appears that there are roughly 1 million Android Wear devices in the wild. How can we tell? The Android Wear app reached 1 million downloads as of yesterday afternoon. Now we can’t guarantee that everyone who downloaded and installed the Android Wear app actually has an Android Wear watch, but I think it’s safe to say that the majority of those downloads probably represent people who actually do have a watch. It also isn’t that far fetched based on the 720,000 figure given by Canalys for 2014, which ended about 2 months ago.
Is 1 million a good number? You can be the judge of that, but I still say that smartwatches are not something the average consumer needs. Companies like Apple, LG, and Motorola are smart in designing smartwatches that are more fashion-focused since that alone might be enough to generate sales.
Yes, it’s cool paying for a cup of coffee with my wrist, and as much as I love my G Watch R, I can’t get myself to tell my friends that they must buy one. Smartwatches will continue to evolve and become more popular, but don’t expect them to explode anytime soon. That includes the Apple Watch.

Motorola to bring Moto 360 to Moto Maker
Coming in March, Motorola will allow consumers to design the Moto 360 to their liking in the Moto Maker store. Moto Maker is currently used for purchasers of the Moto X to design the smartphone exactly to their tastes and desires, but soon the circular smartwatch will appear alongside it.
There was a recent spat between Apple’s Jony Ives and Motorola’s president, Rick Osterloh, with regard to the Moto Maker. Ives felt that by giving consumers choice, it allowed Motorola to forego responsibility in design quality. Obviously, Osterloh disagreed, and with this news that the Moto 360 will join the Moto X in the Moto Maker, Motorola appears to be flipping the bird to the naysayers.
The options prospective buyers might find in the Moto Maker for the smartwatch will deal with the band, the watch casing, and the choice of what watch face the buyer wants to see when they first turn on the device. Additionally, Motorola says that there’ll be some new watch faces to choose from.
The watch casing will come in silver, champagne gold, or black. The band’s varieties include two different sizes of leather or metal, which probably have different color options in each category.
In an interview with Wired, Motorola’s director of design for wearables, Dickon Isaacs, had the following to say about the new addition to Moto Maker:
“We clearly believe in the power of choice, as a brand. And this is really empowering. To be able to design your own watch—it’s not an analog watch, it’s a highly sophisticated device of the future. To be able to do that at this level, we just think it’s going to be incredibly liberating.”
So if you’ve been hesitant to buy a Moto 360, or if the styles currently available just didn’t appeal to you, you might want to revisit the smartwatch here in March.

LG Watch Urbane video emphasizes classic design and customizability
We received our first glimpse of LG’s Watch Urbane last week, and we generally liked what we saw. LG’s latest Android Wear offering is what happens when Contemporary and Classic Unite (according to LG), eschewing the need to scream out that it is a smart watch to all and sundry. While there’s no official word on availability just yet, LG has just released a video showing off the Watch Urbane in all its glory, as seen after the break.
As you can see from the video, LG is emphasizing how the Watch Urbane can be worn with a multitude of different straps so long as they are the regular 22mm size. It isn’t long to wait until MWC, where LG’s latest smartwatch will be given the hands-on treatment. If you simply can’t wait for the Watch Urbane to become available, and you already own an LG G Watch R and have some sandpaper handy, you could always take matters into your own hands. If you don’t mind waiting though, you can pre-order the LG Watch Urbane here in gold or silver trim.

Android Wear with an iPhone, a developer demonstrates it’s possible
As you already know, Android Wear watches and iPhones aren’t compatible. Despite Google claiming that they’ll work on supporting iPhones in the future, to this day you’re still out of luck.
But that hasn’t stopped one intrepid Android developer from getting the two devices to engage in some friendly, albeit limited, dialog.
Android developer Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh figured out that if you just treat the Android Wear watch like a Pebble watch, and you’re using iOS 7 or later, you can use Apple’s Notification Center Service to deliver iPhone notifications to your Android Wear smart-watch. Abu-Garbeyyeh then used an app on his Moto 360 to catch the incoming notification and present it for him to view.
If you’re wanting to go above reading notifications, like getting directions or making use of the smart-watch’s sensors to deliver biometrics to your iPhone, it won’t work. For that, you’re still going to need an Android device with the Android Wear app. As for the smart-watch app that Abu-Garbeyyeh uses, he says that if enough interest is gathered, he’d make the app available for download.
