Android Device Manager now supports Android Wear

Find+your+phone+with+Android+Wear

Google has announced that it is updating its Android Device Manager with support for Android Wear smartwatches, offering additional protection in the case of lost or stolen devices.

The Android Device Manager allows users to track the location of, make ring, lock and even erase all of the data on their Android device, providing that it is switched on. Which is useful if you’re a tad forgetful and offers you some level of data protection if your technology is stolen.

The update to the system will allow for wearable devices to help locate your other Android products. For example, if you misplace your phone but still have your watch on your wrist, you can use Android Wear to help find your phone. Just say “Ok Google. Find my phone” or select ‘Find my phone’ from the start menu and your smartphone will ring at full volume.

This feature is not active on all Android Wear devices yet, but will be rolling out to all wearables within the next few weeks. Users won’t need to download an update or do anything else with their watch to receive the new features, other than sit tight.

If you would like a closer look at how to setup and use the Android Device Manager, check out our in-depth guide here.

TAG Heuer made it official today, after word leaked out yesterday, that they have entered into a partnership with Google and Intel to launch “a Swiss smartwatch” powered by Android Wear. According to the press release issued today as part of the Baselworld event,

“Swiss watchmaking and Silicon Valley is a marriage of technological innovation with watchmaking credibility. Our collaboration provides a rich host of synergies, forming a win-win partnership, and the potential for our three companies is enormous”

No additional details were revealed about pricing or availability, although the device is expected to be released later this year. The companies hope the collaboration results in a product that “elevates the category” according to Michael Bell from Intel’s New Devices Group.

You can read the full announcement from TAG Heuer below.

Baselworld, Switzerland, 19 March 2015 — TAG Heuer, Google, and Intel have announced a partnership to launch a Swiss smartwatch powered by Intel technology and Android Wear. The effort signifies a new era of collaboration between Swiss watchmakers and Silicon Valley, bringing together each company’s respective expertise in luxury watchmaking, software and hardware.

The collaboration was made official at Baselworld, during a press conference held on Thursday 19th March at the TAG Heuer booth. Jean-Claude Biver, President of the Watch Division LVMH Group and CEO of TAG Heuer, David Singleton, Director of Engineering for Android Wear, and Michael Bell, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s New Devices Group, joined each other on stage.

Together, these companies will create a product that is both luxurious, and seamlessly connected to its wearer’s daily life—a culmination of innovation, creativity and design from Silicon Valley in California and the Watch Valley in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

“Swiss watchmaking and Silicon Valley is a marriage of technological innovation with watchmaking credibility. Our collaboration provides a rich host of synergies, forming a win-win partnership, and the potential for our three companies is enormous,” said Jean-Claude Biver.

Guy Sémon, General Manager of TAG Heuer added: “The quality of Swiss watches is renowned worldwide. When this is allied with the creative technology and global power of two companies like Intel and Google, using the Android Wear platform and based on Intel technology, we can see the launch of a technological revolution in our industry, of which I am proud to be a pioneer today with TAG Heuer.”

David Singleton noted, “By fusing beauty with technology, the Swiss watch has inspired generations of artists and engineers alike—including us at Google. So we’re thrilled to be working with TAG Heuer and Intel to bring a unique blend of emotion and innovation to the luxury market. Together, and using the Android Wear platform, we can imagine a better, beautiful, smarter watch.”

“As we work to enable technology experiences that provide greater utility and value to people, Intel is confident that a collective approach will inspire new innovation in wearable technology. The collaboration with TAG Heuer and Google brings us closer to realizing the vision of wearable technology with a distinctive smartwatch that elevates the category,” remarked Michael Bell.

Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer will unveil a smartwatch today – is Google involved?

tag heuer carrera

A year ago almost to the day, Google announced Android Wear, a version of Android designed just for smartwatches. Among the several companies that were listed as partners in the announcement, Fossil stood out as the only conventional watchmaker on the list. We haven’t heard anything about Fossil’s Android Wear smartwatch since then, but we do know that Google is at least interested in putting its OS in the body of a more traditional watch.

While Fossil seemingly abandoned Android Wear, Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer is gearing up to release a smartwatch of its own. It’s not clear for now if TAG Heuer embraced Android Wear for its first smartwatch, though comments from CEO Claude Biver seem to hint at that.

According to Reuters, TAG Heuer is partnering with Intel for the mystery device, but Pocket-lint suggests Google is involved as well. Intel has dabbled into making smartwatches before, having bought Basis Science in March 2014.

The watch coming today will be a “digital replica” of the original black TAG Heuer Carrera (a version of which is pictured above); presumably, the device would look just like the Carrera on the outside, while the watch face will be a digital reconstruction of the Carrera’s dial. The device will be announced today, with a release scheduled for this autumn.

All the pieces of the puzzle suggest this “Carrera smartwatch” could be powered by Android Wear, but we have no guarantee for now. But even if Google isn’t involved, the release of Swiss-made smartwatch that looks like a conventional timepiece is still important for the budding field of wearables.

TAG Heuer is expected to make its announcement at 6AM ET, and we will update you with the official info as soon as we can.

Tag Heuer partnering with Intel and Google for a smartwatch to be announced tomorrow

tag-heuer-tradtional-watch

It was only a matter of time until traditional watchmakers jumped into the smartwatch craze. It appears Tag Heuer will be among the first as they are cooking up something with Intel and Google.

The world watch and jewelry show, Baselworld, kicks off tomorrow in Switzerland, and Tag Heuer is set to announce the new watch around 2:00 pm local time.

It’s expected that Tag Heuer will design the watch case and the crown, but of course, they won’t be able to do the hardware and software. Tag Heuer recognizes that the “craftsmanship” in making a smartwatch is very different than tradtional watches, and that is why they separated the research and development business into two departments.

It will be interesting to see what Tag Heuer comes up with. Will more traditional watch manufacturers follow suit?

AW 4.4 code suggests Android Wear may eventually support iOS

LG G Watch Sony Smartwatch 3 Moto 360 LG G Watch R Android Wear-5

The features offered by the Apple Watch and Android Wear are actually quite similar in many ways, but one big difference is compatibility. The former works only with the iPhone, and the latter only with Android devices. Could this situation ever change? It is already starting to happen, at least for Android Wear.

Last month, developer MohammadAG, known primarily for his work on developing Xposed Framework modules, found a workaround that allowed Android Wear to receive basic notifications from iOS. Yesterday, the developer expanded on this by finding a way to let Android Wear users answer iOS calls from their watch, no jailbreak required.

Of course, a third party developer finding workarounds for Android Wear functionality on iOS isn’t the same as getting full support from Google. Could Google ever officially bring Android Wear support to our iOS-using friends and family? A new tweet from MohammadAG suggests that Google may already be working on it.

Of course the presence of iOS related code doesn’t necessarily mean that Google has immediate plans to offer iOS compatibility for Android Wear, but anything is possible. With cheaper pricing, similar features, and more hardware options, Android Wear could have a real edge over Apple Watch if it came to iOS. Furthermore, if Apple users enjoyed the AW experience, they could theoretically be lured into switching to Android as a result.

What do you think, should Android Wear support multiple operating systems, or is it in Google’s best interest to only support Android?
