New LG Watch Urbane commercial might have outed the upcoming G4

Possible_LG_G4_in_Watch_Urbane_Video_01

LG is launching the Watch Urbane smartwatch on April 27th, and what better way to tease us and maintain interest in the deliciously stylish wearable than the release of a new video. The video shows the Watch Urbane in a variety of poses, and possibly shows off the upcoming G4 as well.

Possible_LG_G4_in_Watch_Urbane_Video_02In the video you can see the Watch Urbane being worn by a man standing around looking awfully smug with life. And can you really blame him? Besides wearing the Watch Urbane, he is also waving around a smartphone that I suspect is the soon to be announced G4.

Why do I say that? Because, as you can see in the image above, the audio jack is on the top of the device in the video while the G3’s audio jack is on the bottom to the left of its charging port. The glimpse of the alleged G4 isn’t enough to make any concrete assertions but we don’t have too long to wait until we find out since the LG G4 is set to be officially launch on April 28th.

In the meantime, millions of us will be waiting for more details on how to become one of the chosen 4,000 people to receive a G4 to test drive…

Motorola’s “Smelt” Could be 360’s Successor

Moto360__Metal_RGB

Motorola’s Moto 360 was a revolutionary smartwatch when it was released last year, combining beautiful aesthetics with a powerful set of features above and below the hood. However, since its competitors have gotten their games up, Motorola’s flagship smartwatch has become just another face in the crowd. Hopefully, its successor, codenamed smelt, will bring Motorola back to the forefront of smartwatch design and capabilities.

While we’ve already seen hints of the new Moto 360 due to a leaked image by Lenovo’s CEO, we didn’t really know much more than that until a device called Smelt running Android 5.1 on a 360 x 360 screen pinged a developer’s console in Illinois. Since the original Moto 360’s codename was Minnow, and both minnows and smelts are fish, this theory seems probable. Until it gets closer to release date, we won’t know exactly what “Smelt” is, but stay tuned to TalkAndroid to find out more news as it comes out.

LG Watch Urbane Launching April 27

LG is planning on making its third step into the world of smartwatches with the LG G Watch Urbane. The watch is a bit more sophisticated than the stunning G Watch R, and is more suited for normal wear as opposed to active wear.

The new design is polished and refined, with dust and water resistance included. Under the hood, the internals are identical to the G Watch R, so you can expect a half gig of RAM, a Snapdragon 400, and a 410 mAh battery.

According to Clove, you can expect to see the G Watch to be released April 27th for about 225 GBP, or near $335. Anyone who has a device running Android 4.3 can use the Android Wear-powered watch, so if that’s you, keep an eye out on TalkAndroid.com for more updates on when and where you can get an LG G Watch Urbane.

Latest video demonstrates Android Wear’s ability to control iOS music

iOS_Music_Controls_Android_Wear_01

Developer Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh has been making quite the buzz lately with his work on pairing Android Wear with iOS. In his first video, he showed the Moto 360 receiving notifications after pairing it with an iPhone. Then in his second video, he showed that you can answer phone calls using Android Wear.

Now in his third video, he demonstrates that Android Wear’s native music controls can control music being played on the iPhone.

This is all pretty cool, but I am not sure that many iOS users would jump on the Android Wear bandwagon instead of the Apple Watch, but it’s nice to have the option. Check out the video below and let us know what you think.

Developing Android Wear watch faces is now easier than ever!

image00

If you’re a Developer, you may want to listen up as Hoi Lam, a Wearables Developer Advocate at Google, has just announced that with Android Studio 1.1 you’ll be able to open a pre-made blank watch face template.

In order to access this new functionality, you will need to make sure that the latest version of the Android Support Repository is installed on your computer. You can do this by opening the Android SDK Manager and selecting “Check for Updates.”

Once installed, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Start a new project or open your existing project
  2. If your project does not already have an Android Wear module, create one!
  3. Select File > New Module…. In the wizard, select Android Wear as the module type and then select No Activity.
  4. Right-click on the module name on the left hand side. Select New > Wear > Watch Face.
  5. Select whether you want an analog or a digital watch face.
  6. Done!

You should now see a skeleton watch face, which will take care of the basic background coding, like automatically adjusting for time zone changes and prompting notifications efficiently — so all you have to do is design the overall skin for the face.

More details emerge about TAG Heuer’s Google/Intel collaboration smartwatch

tag_heuer_google_intel_partnershipWe know TAG Heuer is jumping into the smartwatch game, backed by Google and Intel, but we haven’t heard any concrete details about the watch just yet. Some new details have surfaced from Jean-Claude Biver of Swiss watch-making fame.

He didn’t divulge too much about the inner workings and specs of the watch, but he did give some insight into how much the watch will cost and how it’ll fare against Apple’s upcoming watch.

When asked about how likely it is that people would want a TAG Heuer luxury smartwatch, Biver seems to think there will be plenty of appeal for the device, even at $1,000. That direct, specific number seems to hint at what price point the companies are planning on going for, which is pretty high comparatively speaking. However, this is one of the first efforts by a major watch-maker to step in and create something that would sell like a traditional watch, and if you compare that $1,000 price tag to some other watches TAG Heuer makes… well, let’s just the the $1k comes in at the very low end against some of the other styles they offer.

So, for $1,000, you’d think you’d get a ton of functionality that beats out Apple’s watch, right? Not quite. Biver admitted that there will likely be some things that Apple’s watch will do that the TAG watch won’t, and vice versa. However, he’s not expecting to blow Apple away on the feature list. That might be some disappointing news to some, but I think it’s becoming pretty apparent that this watch is going to appeal to traditional luxury watch buyers, not the tech crowd that the likes of Pebble and Motorola are trying to snatch up.

It’s tough to say just how this will pan out since it’s the first of its kind, but it’ll be fun to see whenever it does hit the market later this year.
